AZ State Rep. to Students Complaining About Tuition: ‘Welcome to Life’

Arizona State Rep. Michelle Ugenti Tells Students Welcome to Life | HB 2675Michelle Ugenti has a message for Arizona college students complaining about a new proposed bill that would force them to pay for more of their college tuition: “Welcome to life.”

Ugenti is an Arizona state GOP Rep. During a recent hearing about HB 2675, which requires all students at three state universities to pay at least $2,000 per year for their education, she didn’t mince words when reacting to those who were complaining about the new measure. The Arizona Republic explains:

About 100 students signed in to oppose the bill, and a handful spoke out against it. James Allen, UA student-body president, told legislators that by passing the bill, legislators would make it harder to achieve a higher-education degree.

Rep. Michelle Ugenti, R-Scottsdale, replied, “Welcome to life.”

A few minutes later, Rep. Matt Heinz, D-Tucson, admonished his colleagues for their comments.

“I feel these students are being greeted with open hostility,” said Heinz, who later voted against the bill.

The bill is the work of state Rep. John Kavanagh. He believes that in such tough economic times, the state can’t afford to be giving out so many free educations (the number of free educations is in dispute, but ranges from 25-50 percent). He also believes students need to have a stake in their education.

“Not everyone, but some people take things they get for free less seriously,” he said, according to the Republic. Kvanagh, however, is open to exemptions to the law for some students such as military veterans.

The bill was approved by committee and now goes to the full House for a vote.

Hey Occupy Crowd!! Gross Domestic Product Equals Gross Domestic Income.
When you artificially inflate the amount of money, let’s say four fold, to purchase a static amount of education, the price of education quadruples. Little wonder why the government is responsible for the outrageously high and hyper inflating cost of education. Hey Occupy Crowd!! Go Occupy the Department of Education and demand for its demise!!

“Gross Domestic Product Equals Gross Domestic Income.”

In theory they do. In reality there are always differences because GDP is based on expenditures while GDI is based on income. Products and services can vary in value, and measurement values mean that expenditures will be different from the income.

Your point stands, but people will learn these key economic terms, theories, and their reality-based applications in higher education!

      1) If you want higher education be willing to work for it. I bused tables in the faculty staff lounge and worked in the campus book store. With help from my parents I graduated DEBT FREE!
      2) If you HAVE to borrow some of the funds for you education, at least major in something that is marketable. Art History probably won’t pay back your student loans.
      3) If you’re going to college on debt or grants and then spending money on parties, umlimited text and data plans and other stupid, then you are too STUPID to go to college.

It reminds me of the kids in Wisconsin last year with their teachers – chanting and demanding that the Gov. of Wisconsin not cut “collective bargaining” – which is the ability for all school instructors & labor unions to extract more money from the tax payers. Little did they realize, THEY were actually asking to pay HIGHER tuition fees!! For each salary increase/retirement pension given to these “professors of higher learning” means an INCREASE IN TUITION for them!! Can you say – STUPID!!

There should be no such thing as a ‘free’ college education. Too many of these ‘free’ educations are so useless as to be a complete waste of time and resources. Also, there is nothing that is ‘free’ in this world…taxpayers are footing the bill. Most of the students getting these useless degrees will be the ones most likely to be on the public dole for their entire lives because they will never be able to earn a decent living wage with the crap they learned. If they are so stupid that they can’t get some sort of scholarship, they should not be in college in the first place. Billions of dollara are never used because no one wants to apply for a scholarship. These students should have to do some work to get the degree they are persuing or they will never appreciate what it is to work for something. All subsidies should be abolished for a college education….then maybe the cost will go down and students will be able to afford that education.

Just wait until Obama gets done giving everyone “free college” they will be paying for many, many years and Obama will remind them endlessly of his goodness. The people in bankruptcy have seen the Obama/Frank/ Dodd “gifts” as they lose their homes because they never could afford them.
College students should not start out in debt-go to a Community College, work every day to avoid debt, take correspondence courses, do not fall victim to Obama and the government run by professors in Obama’s administration. the entire plan from obama is to have everyone in debt to the government and under their thumb, Stalin and Mao did exactly the same until killing 100,000 of their citizens who woke up. I always ends the same way -”free stuff’-too much debt-struggle to pay the debt-bankruptcy-government enslavement.

When you quadruple the amount of money chasing the same amount of education, the price of that education quadruples. The reason why education costs so much is because the government is hyper-inflating the market for the purchase of Education.
Where is the Occupy Crowd in regards to the artificial high cost of education? When will these educationally challenged individuals finally get who is ballooning the cost of education? If we get the government out of the education business, we will see the education bubble burst and the costs dramatically deflate making education affordable again for all Americans.

They get them from years & years of government “Awww..poor babies, it’s not your fault. Don‘t worry we’ll pay for it”. They get them from years & years of public schools who tell them “Don‘t worry that you flunked your spelling test because you didn’t bother to study. It‘s not your fault and we’ll let you take it again & again until you do pass it.” And in many cases they get them from years & years of parents who handed them what they wanted because it was easier than teaching them responsibility, work ethics, accountability and that you don’t deserve or get everything handed to you on a silver platter. Parents who chose to be more focused on getting expensive houses, cars, boats, trips etc instead of raising their children. And they get them from generations of people who would rather live on the government‘s dime because they don’t want to get a job and support themselves.

Then they wouldn’t have to spend so much on benefits to people who are here illegally. You can see why the students get a little affended though, the illegal students get FREE 100 % tuition because the Federal law mandates it.
If they didn’t have to spend so much money defending their own laws from the Feds, they might also have the extra money.

Books cost $1,000. I was shocked. Do state legislators have control those costs? Let’s tell all those college professors to less in royalties. That would be the Liberal/Obama way.

If the students are shocked they need to OCCUPY the School administration, the Department of Education & the Humanities department!

    1. Everyone knows, but leftists do not admit, that the more the federal government gives or loans to college students the faster the colleges suck it up.

    2. Get rid of mandatory courses that are not in your major. People should be able to graduate college in 3 years instead of 4. 25% cost saving off the top. Actually more because you can start paying off college debt sooner. Also people would find more part time jobs instead of borrowing as much. They can see the end of the tunnel midway thru their second year. Humanities are about 30+ semester hours. Most people go thru the motions so what are they learning. A better ideal is to not get people under a debt burden. then they will cast about for something to do. And part of that something could be humanities course that they want tot take not that they are forced to take. Get rid of the humanities Cartel.

Or even better, maybe the notion that we need a college degree to even get a job as a secretary should be dispelled. Most college is wasted effort and wasted time, and many times applies to almost nothing in real life outside of saying “Hey, look, I have a degree”. The cult of “college” is rampant now, and it‘s easy to see that it’s a false idol simply by noting all of the college graduates who are then stuck flipping burgers because their magical degrees in Pan-Slavic Philosophy didn’t buy them automatic admission to employment.

College when necessary, yes (doctors, lawyers, high octane professionals, engineers, etc), but where it’s not necessary (secretaries, mechanics, middle management) stop making it a requirement. Not everybody needs to go to college, and not everybody should.

AP or IB courses. Every young person I know who’s gone to college on their own academic merits (ie, not through affirmative action, sports scholarships, or the GI Bill) has gone in with some of their courses already completed; most of them already at sophomore status (or higher). Knocking out 20-30 credits before stepping foot on a college campus is pretty common for even a moderately driven individual.

Excellent point. Doesn’t take a college degree to type letters, do basic accounting, schedule appointments, make sure others are doing their own jobs….the list can go on & on. And with computer programs most things are basically fill in the blanks and the program tells you if the information you put in those blanks is right or wrong. People who have had years of hands on experience are disqualified for jobs only because they don’t have a diploma. Doesn’t matter if they know more about the work and can do it better than some 22yo with a basic degree in “I went to college to get a degree in nothing special”.

Just perhaps if students were told that some of the money for their education was coming out of their pockets they would take their education more seriously. If you were told that you were going to have to pay for a class then you would be more likely to be sure that they actually taught you something. Two thousand a year is not that much. If you can’t afford it, get a part time job. It wasn’t that long ago when a very large percentage of college students actually worked their way their through college instead of expecting someone else to foot the entire bill.

I am a baby boomer. My parents didn’t have the opportunity to go to college. Their wish was that I became the first member of the extended family to get a college degree. My parents paid nothing for my college because they didn’t have it

I went to a private college from 1966-1970 on a partial scholarship. This meant higher tuition than a state school. I paid the rest of my tuition by working 3 jobs. Those were the days when the Selective Service was active. You could lose your draft student deferment if your grades dropped below 2.00 GPA. This was not the days of the 5 year degree. You had to finish your Bachelors in 4 years.

I roomed with a vet who joined the USMC for the GI Bill. This was the only way he could afford college. He worked full time and was a full time student. With the exception of 3 guys on my college baseball team, all of us worked either part or full time to pay for school.

My children were raised to work for the things they wanted. Each knew exactly how much we could give them to attend college. They were expected to pay for the rest. They did.

Please don’t paint all the baby boomers with the same brush.

“He believes that in such tough economic times, the state can’t afford to be giving out so many free educations (the number of free educations is in dispute, but ranges from 25-50 percent). He also believes students need to have a stake in their education.”

I’m curious if anyone here is from AZ and is in college or has a child in college. When this says “free,” I’m guessing it just means tuition? The reason I wonder is I had relatives in MA while Romney was governor, and one piece of legislation was vowing to let students attend state college “for free” if they scored high enough on the state high school exams (called MCAS).

Turned out it was a crock. The UMASS universities just lowered tuition from $12,000 to about $2000… and made the rest “fees” of about $10,000, which weren’t covered. The “free” education didn’t extent to books, housing, or meal plans either. While it was nice to get $2000 off of the total cost, in-state students were still paying almost $20,000 a year. Hardly “free” at all!

So now when I hear “free” education, I’m dubious. Anyone know if AZ has a similar system in place?

One of the first rules you learn in economics in college is TNSTAFL, There is No Such Thing As a Free Lunch (ie. Education). Free is not free, if it is a service, good, or freedom someone pays for it.

If you want a free education join the military and EARN the GI Bill and the various military college funds. The bill also allows for an exemption for veterans because they EARNED it. Otherwise get a job and work your way through.

Maybe you have to go to University of Phoenix or the like instead of a traditional university. I went to a state university with people whose college was paid for them. These free loaders tended to do poorly and not finish. On the other hand I served in the military, took out student loans which I am paying currently, and worked 35 hours a week and finished on time.

This is a great life lesson on responsibility and the value of EARNING what you have.

I live in AZ, my daughter is at the University of Arizona on a scholarship, she graduated with a 4.0 GPA. Arizona has a program for students of parents that are low income and as in MA, it only pays for tuition. I don’t think they are going to get much money from those families, they are probably at their limit on their bills, let alone any college expenditures.

That’s what the students need to stand up to .. go in and NEGOTIATE your tuition . … just like buying a car … I know doctors and dentists that do this .. why not these spoiled professors and colleges who are sitting on million dollar endowments??!!

Marxist professors run an Education Cartel that is every bit as damaging as the Drug cartel.

Students are forced to take 30 semester hours of humanities to get a diploma.

How about this. A person only take core courses & graduate in three years. Then when they don’t have to work 2 jobs to pay off college debt they will be looking to take courses of their own free will to enhance their life.

The college professors & the students will be on a level playing field. The college professor won’t have the leverage of the withholding the degree. The prospective student won’t be negotiating from a position of duress.

It’s so much easier to get on the government teat rather than work your way through college. My son tells me of some real losers who screw with him because he works while attending college. This is the best idea that I have heard of, get a little skin into the game punks.

My son did also . with help from living at home … the college looked at us like we were crazy when I said he didn’t have a “loan” and would be paying for his books in cash .. they acted like they didn’t know how to do that!

They may not have been set up that way & their minds may have been conditioned to doing business one way.

catb – BINGO! Plumber, electrician, welder, automotive repair, small engine repair, HVAC, sheetmetal worker, computer tech etc etc etc. Unless and until the SHTF big time, everybody has pipes that can break, water/septic/sewer lines that can clog, furnace/ac that can stop running etc. These days there are too many college degrees floating around that in the real world aren‘t worth the paper they’re printed on vs a real need for trained people who don‘t think they are above actual physical labor and don’t mind sweating a little each day.
