Saturday marked the 20th anniversary of the release of Nevermind, the iconic grunge-band Nirvana’s breakout record. With hit singles such as “Smells Like Teen Spirit” and “Come As You Are,” Nevermind is credited with bringing alternative rock to the mainstream. As famous as the album’s lead singles is Nevermind’s cover, a naked baby chasing a dollar underwater.
The baby is now 20-year-old art student Spencer Elden. Elden spoke with CNN recently to discuss the story behind photo, and what life has been like as the “Nevermind baby:”
The self-described Nirvana fan has never met the band members despite his iconic image‘s place in Nirvana’s history. The band’s lead singer and guitarist died in April, 1994, at age 27.
The album spent 253 weeks on the Billboard Top 200, and 30 Million copies of Nevermind have been sold worldwide.

Posted on September 27, 2011 at 7:09amGreat record. Cool pic. Too bad the kid didn’t get to meet the band members that lived. Oh well, so what, who cares, oh nevermind.

Posted on September 27, 2011 at 3:28amHi, I don’t like this album because it promotes the homosexual agenda. Just look at it.
The only albums I like are ones done by Perry Cuomo. I like to listen to it in front of my life-sized poster of Lee Majors in his star-spangled motorcycle helmet.

Posted on September 27, 2011 at 4:57amChild Pornography? Really? Your joking right?
Where is your mind at to even ‘Think’ of that?
I saw that album cover when it first came out and seen it hundreds of times since.
And not ‘Once’ did any such thought let alone an inkling of a thought like that come to mind.
I see a baby underwater, in a pool, eying a dollar bill.

Geez.

Posted on September 27, 2011 at 11:33amNope, I don’t think so. I think it being an album cover and musicians are artists, I’d consider it art. (not really my cup of tea) but art just the same.

Posted on September 27, 2011 at 5:04amI thought it was a good story that helps break up the norm.
Plus I thought it neat to see what the kid grew up to look like. It‘s not ’ground breaking’ yet it was a cool little piece that brought back some memories and a grin to the face.
Was relevant in a nostalgia kinda way. Nice little break from the constant deepening foundational cracks to our financial and social systems. Even the Lord broke some bread and had a laugh in between saving the world.

Posted on September 26, 2011 at 11:34pmI thought my, “nude lying on a rug”, baby pictures were enbarassing, but only a few people have ever seen those. I can’t imagine how traumatized I would be knowing 30 million people had nude photos of me.
