Babysitter Charged With Serving Marijuana-Laced Margarine to 12-Year-Old Girl

NEW KENSINGTON, Pa. (AP) — A Pennsylvania woman will stand trial on charges she fed marijuana-laced margarine to a 12-year-old girl she was baby-sitting, as well as two other children at her home.

The 12-year-old‘s mother called Upper Burrell Township police after discovering the drugs in a tub of I Can’t Believe It’s Not Butter in 22-year-old Stevie Hickey’s freezer. The woman tells police Hickey spread the substance on two pieces of toast that Hickey gave to the girl.

Police say Hickey told the girl it was “parsley butter” but later acknowledged to police that it was marijuana.

The Valley News Dispatch in Tarentum reports Hickey remains free after waiving her right to a preliminary hearing on marijuana possession and child endangerment charges May 10.

Her home phone is disconnected.

In our society, its a doctors or parents job to dose their kids with drugs…not the babysitter.

The story also doesn’t mention if the margarine is fat free or not. Since THC (the active compound in marijuana) is only soluble in fat, there would be no absorption into the bloodstream if fat-free spread was used.

Lol yes they should get in trouble. But I mean seriously Marijuana never killed anyone. If anything the kid got hungry and a bit tired. Why was the mother looking around in the babysitters freezer in the first place is my question.

The problem is she might have seemed a very nice and responsible person, so it’s not the moms fault.
There‘s only one person at fault here and that’s the babysitter, she’s clearly nuts.

Notice it says the mother found it in the babysitters refrigerator. So my guess, kids are at the babysitters house, she makes them toast, and grabs the butter she laced for herself. Stupid? Yea. Did she go make up a batch special to try and poison the minds of young innocents? I doubt it.

    @ccmtpl
You say, “Why does a 12 year old have a baby sitter?”

First, there were two other children in the home, and since their ages are not listed there is a good chance at least one child was younger than 12. I don’t know where you live, but in some states it is actually illegal to leave a 12 year old unattended by an adult. I know I would feel much safer having an adult in the house. And of course we know that old addage, “Better safe than sorry.”

thats not really accurate. the 12 year old would have no idea that the marijuana was in the butter if it was made correctly. If this guy grounded it up correctly and cooked it, the 12 yr. old would not know. Now if this guy just dumped some weed in a bin of butter yes he’s a moron. and it does not take a lot of marijuana eaten to produce a high. its not the marijuana itself but the THC that causes the high and when cooked into butter , just a spread or two on toast is all you need to maintain a nice even high. Mainly a body high when using edibles so the kid probably just felt a little different. now it probably wasn’t a good idea to give it to a 12 year old your baby sitting. But how did the parents find out?

At least it was Marijuana. I have many many friends that have been smoking pot since 11 years old or younger. Not saying its right in any way for this person to have done this. But at least it is the least harmful drug out there. Kid probably had a good laugh, ate and went to bed.

This story smells. In the fist place, spreading butter “laced” with marijuana on toast, a 12 year old would have to know. It would taste like dirt laced butter. If it wasn’t exceedingly obvious by sight and taste, it wouldn’t matter, because there would be no effect. It takes a lot of marijuana, eaten, to produce a high.

Uh, I’m not arguing here, but it would probably taste like a whole lot closer to oregano than dirt. I’ve had herbed butters before and actually made them myself a few times. I’m not sure how much one would have to ingest to get a buzz, but ingesting it on a piece of toast would probably be enough to show up in a urine screen. Heck, it’s shown up in screens of people who have merely been around where pot is being smoked.

As for leaving a twelve year old alone at home, in our state, it’s 13 before a child could be left safely. However, I can remember babysitting for others at 12, but that was during the last century. I will also point out that when our son was 11, the local librarian almost called the police because they thought he was left in the library alone, while I was in another aisle the whole time. That was really questionable seeing how groups of students from a nearby school would often descend on the library to do homework following school dismissal and they obviously were there without a parent.

Anyway, there’s got to be more to this story than what is being reported.

no really.. it doesnt… if you “cook” the pot, and just use the “oil” its very potent….. which is exactly what marijuana butter is.

if you are referring to me, you couldnt be more wrong…Obama is a disgrace to this nation and leading us to utter destruction! Im a libertarian all the way. I was in no way suggesting that what that crazy woman did was right, i completely disagree with any child being exposed to marijuana. i was merely pointing out the fact that society is ok with doctors feeding kids antidepressants and amphetamines but a kid recieving a dose of marijuana is somehow so much worse..so dont call me an obama supporter just for disagreeing, thats what progressives do..just sayin

Many of us who do not support Obama enjoy our God given right to smoke whatever we want. This is freedom. What if the kid had been given prescription drugs. Might not be alive anymore. Not excusing the 22 year old from wrongdoing, but at least marijuana has never in one instance been known to harm anyone.

Your an idiot right? retorical dont answer. You answered it when you said a doctor gives the kids medication contianing these other ingredients, which i may say i took as a child, i can tell you its not crank or speed or crack in the medication as you may think or use. The point is a doctor gave itwith the parents approval because the parent will have to insure the child takes it not some women. Doesnt matter what her age is really yes death and to all druggies imo death

perhaps the 12 year old is challenged. Or maybe the parents thought it would be a good idea to have their 12 year old supervised so the 12 year old wouldn’t be tempted to stray and get involved with people who use drugs. Ironic, isn’t it?

This whole story is weird. How did it come about that the mother opened up the babysitter’s freezer? Who told, or why did she suspect why it was marijuana laced butter? What was the butter doing in the freezer (I keep mine in a refrigerator and it is still too hard to spread)? And finally, as said above, what is a 22 year old doing watching a 12 year old?

Somehow I get the picture of a neighborhood that is totally dysfunctional.

I am a foster parent and if I had a 12-year-old in my home and my wife and I wanted to go to a movie we’d have to get either a family member or another licensed foster family to watch the youth. Don’t be so quick to jump to conclusions. There are a lot of reasons a 12-year-old would require a babysitter.

Look at what you just said, I would have a family member or other licensed foster parent to watch the 12 year old….not the next door 22 year old. I was not saying a 12 year old should not have supervision, it was the choice of sitter.

Why does a 12 year old have a babysitter? What kind of question is that? What should really be asked is why don’t more 12 yr olds have babysitters? Of course, people like you apparently see nothing wrong with letting children (yes 12 is still a CHILD) roam free and we wonder what’s wrong with our society. Treating kids like grown ups and being their friend is not being a parent. Hopefully you don’t have any young children that you leave unsupervised and exposed to the dangers that are all around them. If you do well I feel sorry for him/her. And as for the other commenter, a CHILD doesn’t need to be disabled to require supervision. Apparently this kids mom had the decency to try and be sure that her child was protected though unfortunately for her the person she chose was unsuitable. Sadly you never really know anyone!

To all – The age at which a child is left home alone, and for how long, is up to the parents, within some limits.

The obvious and real problem is someone fed pot to a minor. Stick to what is clearly wrong, and leave the fuzzy stuff to the people involved, eh?
