Bachmann Confronts CNN Anchor Over ‘Gotcha Question’ on Homosexuality

On Tuesday morning, CNN‘s Soledad O’Brien and Republican presidential candidate Michele Bachmann squared-off in a somewhat uncomfortable on-air debate over a question about the contender’s past statements on homosexuality.
In a dialogue on the network’s “Starting Point,” Bachmann called O‘Brien’s recap of her past statements and a subsequent question — whether the candidate would like to “pull back” on any of her past controversial comments about homosexuality — “a bizarre thing to bring up.”
O’Brien said, in full, “You have taken a lot of flak for some of your very strong social issues, where you stand on them, and I want to talk about some of them. Your stance on homosexuality — and want to read a little bit of what you said — You said, at the Educators Conference in 2004, ‘Gays live a very sad life,’ and that ‘it’s part of Satan’ And that’s quote. You’ve taken a lot of flak for that. Do you pull back on any of that?”
Bachmann responded fairly quickly and pointedly:
“It’s a bizarre thing to bring up. Today is the election, what people recognize is that the most important issue that people will be looking at is, ‘Who is the best person to deal with the economy?’ Probably someone who’s created the a business from scratch. I came from a family where I was below poverty. I had to earn my way up out of poverty.”
The awkwardness doesn’t end there. O‘Brien counters that she doesn’t see her question as “bizarre” and that she believes it to be “fair.“ Bachmann then dismisses it as ”a gotcha question coming way out of the past.” This is reminiscent of Rick Santorum’s dialogue with FOX News’ Shepard Smith yesterday surrounding the very same subject.

“Despite what you may have heard, our only two candidates that draw support from independents and democrats and are within reasonable striking distance of defeating Barack Obama are Ron Paul and Mitt Romney. The other 5 candidates are being absolutely destroyed by Obama in the latest head-to-head matchup polls, all losing by double digits.
We all agree here that we need to elect someone in 2012 that will do two things: 1) be able to win the nomination and beat Obama and 2) offer different policies than Obama. Between the two electable candidates, Paul and Romney, I am personally backing Ron Paul because he is clearly the only option that meets both of those requirements.
Of these two – and of the entire field of candidates we have to choose from today for that matter – Ron Paul is the only one that has voted against every bailout every time, has never voted for a tax increase, has never voted in support of individual mandates, has a plan to balance the budget in one term, has not flip-flopped on a single issue throughout his three decades of public service, and by all accounts, is absolutely incorruptible. In terms of being able to win the nomination and beat Obama, Ron Paul is the only candidate besides Mitt Romney with a nation-wide campaign and with the necessary money to make the long haul. He is currently in a very solid 2nd in New Hampshire’s polling right now.
Ron Paul will have the best chance to beat Obama.

Posted on January 3, 2012 at 11:37amThe only person who can pray away gay is the person who is gay, IT’S the same WITH any other sin, yes homosexuality is a sin. A sin is defined as anything that is not pleasing to God and does not line up with His biblical precepts spelled out in the Holy Bible. We are all sinners and we must have our sins atoned for, a priest, pastor, preacher, rabbi, or any other person cannot do that. We must ask God (Jesus) for grace and mercy. Does that mean we’ll never sin again? no, we will slip up but we won’t wallow in habitual sin after our sins have been atoned for and we have been born again. That my Friends is the Gospel and what God calls His truth. Until a person is aware of what sin is, it is impossible to have their sins atoned for. I’ll go a step further and refer to Romans 1:23 there 32 and it is not only the person who is in sin but also those people who approve of that sin that are guilty. The passage seems to indicate there may come a time when God will not allow a person to see the truth and therefore their sins can never be atoned for. The result of not having our sins atoned for is an eternal life separated for God in a place God calls HELL! The atheist will argue that this cannot be verified since the dead cannot speak. Only one person who ever died has came back to life can tesify that this is truth and that is Jesus…. who DID atone for whosoever will’s sins! We have many people who have not never died who ignorantly try to say this isn’t true!

Thankfully you are wrong in your assessment of me. The majority of my friends are evangelical Christians and I love them very much. That being said, I won’t be tolerant of intolerance which is what the majority of believers(Christian or not) are in regards to homosexuality. They have no rational or logical argument against homosexuality, it just comes down to “I believe” or “Well god says.” Well guess what? This isn‘t just a issue of Gay though there are many many sins that people in this world continue to commit and God doesn’t rates sins like people rate them there isn’t a sin that is a sin but ok because it is not as bad as other sins. A sin is a sin period. Even God has his limits on toleration of sins and when God finally decides enough is enough..woe be on to those of you that think they are better than say a Gay man or anyone else because your pet sin in your own human eyes doesn‘t seem as bad by comparison because in Gods eyes it won’t matter.

How hateful would that be? I am CERTAIN you would disapprove of that!
As it has been made perfectly clear… repreatedly… IF a patient SEEKS to try to change their sexual orientation, they try to provide that assistance.
Would you prefer they turn the patient away??? I am CERTAIN you would disapprove of that!
Now, if the patient is a religious person, why would you NOT seek God’s assistance? If the patient believes in an Almighty Being that is the Creator and Designer of the universe, then, the patient will feel they are being ASSISTED by that same Almighty Being.

You also seem to think that because a great many people struggle with other sins, that they are excusing this sinful behavior as OK. That’s not the case. Posted on January 3, 2012 at 2:22pmI invite everyone out there to shift their paradigm for a moment. The problem is not gays and lesbians. They are our friends, neighbors, co-workers, and family. The problem is redefining Marriage. Redefining marriage is the “Trojan Horse” tool that is capable of striping our first freedom, that of religious liberty, off the top of our Bill of Rights. If we lose marriage, we lose religious liberty and will have paved the road to losing all rights. So long as we focus on unkind thoughts about gays and lesbians we will miss the mark and our opportunity to preserve our Constitution. Gays and Lesbians have the right to marry under the law. What same sex marriage proponents want is to redefine the meaning of marriage. Protecting marriage will protect the rights of all people, gay, lesbian, believer, and non-believer alike. It is my biggest problem with Dr. Paul. He agrees with the traditional definition of marriage but will not sign the NOM pledge to protect traditional marriage. I like many things that Ron Paul says, but I do not think he has figured out the link between the homosexual marriage issue and the Constitutional liberties he holds so dear.

I am so tired of people telling me who can beat Obama.
In the primary I am going to vote for the person who most closely resembles my own beliefs, ideas and ideals. That would be Santorum. If he doesn’t win the ticket for Republican candidate then I will vote for whomever that is, just like I did the last time. Even though I hated voting for McCain. But he would have moved us more slowly in the same direction Obama has us hurtling towards.
I refuse to use my primary vote to vote for someone I don’t really like but am willing to settle for.

Bible uses a similar methodology, because people tend to skip rational and indulge in rationalizations.
In a nutshell, from the strictly biological POV, homosexuality is a deviant behavior. It negates the principial imperative of life–to perpetuate itself.
Homosexuality was also one of the main building blocks of the strategy of Gramsci/Frankfurt School, to corrupt the western society by pushing it as a “life-style choice”. They recognized the corrosive nature of homosexuality, apparently.

Posted on January 3, 2012 at 5:03pmFirst off, the majority of Christians believe we are born with original sin, thus deserving of hell. So you’re born sick and need Jesus to be healed.
The Old Testament is filled with commandments that people no longer follow. It is because people became more rational and said “huh, that doesn’t make sense.” You use your human logic to choose which to follow and which not to follow, I’m sure your God would be upset about that. Who are you to say which laws of God we are no longer to follow. I think it’s hilarious how almighty and powerful you claim your God is, yet he’s such a horribly bad communicator that there are thousands of denominations of Christianity.
Statistics are irrelevant because those diseases can be passed through heterosexual sex. Maybe the Gay community is stupid and has more unprotected sex with random people, but that is no different then straight people being stupid and having unprotected sex with random people.
Despite what you think, homosexuality isn’t contagious and since not everyone is gay, you don’t have to worry about “humans becoming extinct.” I don’t understand the “If we allow gay marriage, then everyone will become gay!” thinking, unfortunately I have a hard time believing they are actually using their brain when they say that.

My argument was, “Everyone isn’t gay, therefore you don’t have to worry about humans becoming extinct.” The only way his argument would even be deemed somewhat worthy is if he thought homosexuality was contagious and the only way to continue the human race was to outlaw homosexuality, or frown upon it or say it has ANYTHING to do with humans living on.
Fact is, homosexuality isn‘t contagious and there are plenty of people who AREN’T homosexual, therefore the human race will continue on. Let’s not get into the science of artificial insemination.

If you think that the Old Testament shouldn’t be adhered too, then please stop referencing the 10 commandments, or talking about homosexuality being an abomination.
If you look through the new Testament Jesus never once mentioned homosexuality. You then need “human logic” and they find a way to say that while he didn’t mention homosexuality, he still condemned it.
Please stop saying your book is the word of God, and every word of it is true and then use human reasoning and logic to change what it says or what to follow and what not to follow. It’s pretty hypocritical.

Posted on January 3, 2012 at 8:15pmHey Billy, yeah Clinton was stupid that way. But thanks to the Republicans, the United States started by investigation Whitewater, and kept investigating throughout Clinton’s second term. Of course they never found any illegal activities, until, pursuing every lead, Starr finally cornered President Clinton, and yes, he lied under oath about getting a bj. And then Republican, including Gingrich (who was having his own affair at the time) tried to impeach him because, you know, he gave false testimony about getting a bj.
The cost of proving Clinton gave false testimony about a bj? 80 million dollars of the tax payer’s money. And they found nothing expect Clinton lying about getting a bj. Maybe you think that‘s a good use of taxpayer money but I don’t.
Regardless, my only comment was about how the Republican candidates are taking strong positions about denying homosexuals their right to get married (because homosexuality is punishable by death in the Christian religion), but don’t seem to mind too much if their candidates are adulterers (also punishable by death according to the Bible). Can you explain why people accept serial adulterers like Cain or Gingrich as viable candidates for the Presidency, while those same candidates campaign on family values on the one hand and against gay marriage on the other?

I’m sorry Cain dropped out of the contest. For sure he was convicted by the press. Of course there were those harassment claims that were paid off. And six or seven women who were going to come forward with details of Cain’s amorous approaches, and there was the long term lover who had a few thing she could show. Yes, I judged Cain based on the absurdity him running for President with no qualification. But I admit, without photographs or recorded conversations, there is no “proof” that Cain was an adulterer. Posted on January 3, 2012 at 11:02pmBilly, please. I won‘t defend Clinton’s consensual relationship with an adult in her 20s – I said that – but you are happy to excuse Gingriches two adulterous affairs while married, including one when his wife had cancer. You’d condemn Clinton, but you’d vote for a two time adulterer, or vote for and Cain, a serial sexual harrasser, although you don‘t believe the charges against Cain because you don’t have videotape (funny, no one has made charges against the other candidates).
I love the Republican line. Under Reagan, the deficit ballooned, although to give him credit he raised taxes over and over to address growing shortfall. There was no “trickle down” of wealth, and government revenue didn’t increase, except by the tax increases.
Then, during the Clinton years, when the economy was great, taxes were much higher than now, and the budget was balanced, you credit the previous President and Gingrich. Then, in the eight years of the Bush Presidency, the deficit soared (two wars, and unpaid prescription drug benefit, and tax cuts during war, something unheard of) and you blame Clinton. Then the economy collapsed in the worse way since the Great Depression. Which is Obama’s fault.
So if I understand this, the economy was poor under Reagan, and that’s the democrats fault, good Clinton, that credit goes to Republicans. And Bush’s bad economy was because of Clinton.

Report Post »Being Jewish I can’t really answer your question regading the Christian view on Satan. But I can give you the Jewish perspective at least as I understand it.
In Judaism Satan is not an adversary of G-d or an enemy of His. Satan actually is a servant of G-d. Satans purpose is quite simply to give man a chance to earn a place in Olam Haba (hebrew for what is generally referred to as heaven). You see one values something much more when they have earned it as opposed to just being given to them free. G-d is the most benevolent and created this world not as an end in itself but rather as a means to earn a place in heaven. Satan challenges man to reach his potential and earn a greater place in eternity. Without a challenge there can be no reward. Being given eternal reward without earning it would make the person feel shame for having something they don’t deserve. So Satan is a tool of G-d to challenge man to be his best. But while the Satan has is strong G-d does give him rules. One rule is that he can‘t test a person with a test that they can’t pass. Each challenge or temptation we get in life is one we can overcome if we try. When we replace our will with G-ds will and follow his laws we earn merits for ourselves for all eternity. When we fail depending on how we failed (too detailed to explain) we get demerits, but they are not eternal and can be cleansed through various repentance.
So Satans existence doesn’t contradict His Omnipotence or Omnies

Honestly, for how much Glenn Beck talks about common sense, it seems he and his followers throw it right out the window when it comes to this or other faith based issues.
How does gay marriage take away from your marriage? Is your marriage so shallow that you need a WORD for it to have meaning? Would you think less of your marriage if gay people were allowed to be married? If so, I suggest you re-assess your marriage and its meaning. Posted on January 4, 2012 at 8:55am@mod Yes is does bother me that they are using the word marriage. I don’t know your name but for example lets say its “Frank.” If gay people were using the name Frank to mean they were getting married, I’m sure you would be upset about them using that specific word. Words have meanings, and we need to be true to those meanings or else language would be useless. They are forcing their opinion because that’s not what the word means. I don’t care about what they “feel” they should have, the word means “the formal union of a man and woman” period. If they don’t like it, too bad.

Concerning your reply 1/3 6:15pm … based on you’re own post you do not understand the bible or you would understand why the laws of the Old Testiment do not apply in this present day. The Ten Commandments still do unless to think murder is OK.
You also do not understand what I believe and the bible is self explainatory.
You accuse others of picking and choosing when in fact they are not … but you turn right around and do it. You completely ignore ALL the OTHER verses that do say this lifestyle choice is a sin, and almost every place where there is a list of sins mentioned (including Jesus) that prevent someone from entering “the kingdom of heaven” sexual immorality” is on the list. THAT IS A SIMPLE FACT OF WHAT THE BIBLE SAYS … it is illogical and foolish to say otherwise.
So my question to you is what is this sexual immorality ….?
Your last pharagraph is quite amazing when as I state above you are being hypocritical in plain site as you call others hypocritical.

The difference is, I don‘t think the Bible holds any value and isn’t divinely inspired. Therefore I can pick and choose all I want. The fact that there may be some “happy verses” here and there, doesn’t change how gruesome and blood thirsty your God is.
If your God exists, he isn’t moral, isn’t just, and isn’t righteous.
It’s amazing how jealous your God gets.

But back to Bachmann‘s complaint that the question was not relevant shows her contempt for one’s attempt to understand her beliefs. It is sad that Bachmann condemned such questioning. It is quite hypocritical of her. Woe to those that attempt to inquire as to her beliefs.
Bachmann will force her religious bias on others, but cannot and will not allow that bias to be understood or questioned.
The GOP has no reservation in forcing their religious beliefs on others. Just don’t force your religious beliefs on them.
They, the GOP, have forgotten that they, Christians, are to be a light unto the world. They would rather use that proverbial candle to burn and kill the ungodly for they see it as justified by God. They want to legislate the ungodly out of this world rather than be light unto salvation. They have forgotten that the way to GOD comes from the soul and not from the sword.
They have forgotten that they are in a world but not of it. They wish to destroy that which is Caesar‘s giving unto God that which is God’s and taking away that which is Caesar’s and giving to themselves.
They are very hateful and vengeful. Vengeance is mine says the GOP.
That hate and vengeful attitude is so well displayed here.

““I see no hope for the future of our people if they are dependent on the frivolous youth of today, for certainly all youth are reckless beyond words. When I was a boy, we were taught to be discrete and respectful of elders, but the present youth are exceedingly wise and impatient of restraint.” – attributed to Hesiod, a Greek poet.
I don‘t think it’s the school system. The opinions of young people aren‘t fixed in concrete that’s all. That’s why they are more accepting of new or different ideas. I had an astronomy professor who once said something like, “New scientific theories are only accepted when the old scientists die and new ones come along.”

I will gladly help you with this fifth grade level task. The first “marriage” was between Adam and Eve (man and woman). The Hebrew word for marriage comes from the word kiddushin which is also the word for sanctification. During the ceremony the kallah (bride) and chatan (groom) are wed. Now how you got on this topic I have no idea. The definition in today’s dictionary which I quoted before “the formal union of a man and woman” had nothing to do with the Hebrew text. Please stay on topic if you are going to try to refute arguments.
This is America. If gay people don’t like the way they are treated here, they are welcome to leave. Don’t try to change our country when there are others that will acknowledge their “marriage.”
And finally just because you don’t believe the Bible is divinely inspired, doesn’t mean its true. It‘s amazing that you don’t think the God who created the universe and everything in it could be a jealous God. That you sir or ma’am keep that what you think is more important than what he commands. Which is what you implied when you commented on how the first four commandments are so “vein” (I think you meant vain). When you have created a universe from the snap of your fingers, maybe we could change the ten commandments.

Follow along now.
MOD SAID…..”I don’t understand the “If we allow gay marriage, then everyone will become gay!” thinking, unfortunately I have a hard time believing they are actually using their brain when they say that”.
I SAID……..”Show me just one instance of anyone, anywhere, anytime, ever stated that if gay marriage is allowed, everyone will become gay”.
MOD SAID……”Someone in this very same line of threads said, “3: if every man turned **** we would be extinct within three generations, since they cant reproduce with each other.”
Now how exactly is what the other poster said the same as what you originally claimed?
You claimed that a person or persons have said……. “if we allow gay marriage, everyone will become gay”
The other poster simply stated that “IF” every man on earth were gay, reproduction would be impossible. (Provided some of the gay guys did not stray to other side that is). And his statement was clearly to prove a point. He in NO way implied that legalizing gay marriage would somehow magically transform all hetero men in to gays.
See the difference?
Sadly, probably not.

As I have said before many times. I use to be a Christian and about 90% of my friends are evangelical Christians. I have Mormon aunts and uncles and two friends who are Jews.
I love them all very much and wouldn’t want to stop them from being religious. The problem is, is that they and other religious people want to stop other people from doing what they want to do based on their “belief.“ Usually those beliefs are void of rational thought and strictly come back to ”God says it’s wrong“ or ”I believe” it’s wrong. Well guess what, I don’t care what your God says, or what you BELIEVE. I do care what you “think” but not what you “believe.”
We thankfully we live in a country(or used to) where religious believers couldn’t force their religion on someone else. Does that mean they’re forcing the person to believe as they do? No, but they‘re forcing other people to conform their actions based around other’s beliefs.
Again, I don’t want to stop anyone from being religious. Do I hope one day people will choose to see their error and leave their religious dogma in the past? Sure, but do I want to stop them from practicing their faith? No.
Sadly, somehow being homosexual somehow inhibits believers ability to practice their faith.

You really crack me up. This is from your link, Reagan says, “In theory, some of those loopholes were understandable, but in practice they sometimes made it possible for millionaires to pay nothing.”
Let me explain the context of the word “nothing.” Nothing, as in, zilch, zero, nada. Now most on this site understand the front you put on. You know your intentionally spreading misinformation, which is sad. This is evident by you admitting there are zero liberal policies you would subject yourself to, but to my point.
Your posts always imply (not that you actually believe what your saying) that the right wants the rich to pay no taxes, kinda like you boy immelt. But that is a liberal fabrication that has been made up out of thin air. You own link disproves that fabrication, congrats! I also couldn‘t help noticing you didn’t comment on my government waste point. So if you, JZS, ran the show, what would you do first? Fight government waste and save more money than you would raise with the taxing the rich, or ignore government waste and just tax the rich.
Since logic is not you thing, I’ll spell it out. The government wastes more money than they would raise with your suggested tax plan. So, would you be able to, for the well being of the country, put your politics aside and realize we’d be better off ending waste than implementing you tax plan.

“Billionaire investment tycoon Warren Buffett, who has become the unwitting mascot of President Obama’s deficit reduction plan, is less than thrilled with one of the plan’s main provisions: the millionaires’ tax, or as it’s come to be known, the ”Buffett Rule.”
“In an interview with Bloomberg Television today, Buffett said he did not support the president’s plan to increase taxes on people who earn more than $1 million per year.”
“Later on CNBC Buffett said if it were up to him, people earning $50 million would not see any tax increases, only people who “make a lot of money and pay a very low tax rate, like me.”

Everyone here deserves to know that this “dictator” comment is BS. Let’s get the facts straight. The creation of the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau was passed into law by Congress. Like it or not, it’s the law of the land, a law passed by the House, passed by the Senate and signed by the President of the United States. That the way our Constitutional government works, and the way it worked in this case.
But republicans are trying to prevent the CFPB from operating by using their “advice and consent” responsibility. Even Boehner admits he doesn’t have an objection to the nominee for head of the CFPB. This has nothing to do with the qualification of the nominee. Republicans just using a parliamentary procedure to prevent the President from enacting a law that became law in accordance with the Constitution. Republicans are abusing their advice and consent role to block legislation that is ALREADY law.

NOBODY is going to vote for them who doesn’t want to limit the government and give personal liberty and power back to the people.
You better go and look at voting records. Look at what they voted for and against. In a study about who has voted the most conservative/constitutional stance out of over 8000 rep/sen Ron Paul has the MOST conservative/constitutional record out of all for over 100 years! Bachmann voted for the Patriot Act with it’s secret charges, secret evidence and secret courts where the accused is not told what they are accused of! She also voted for the NDAA which allows for the indef. detention of US citizens.
Santorum is no better.

I’m against big government. Whether they have an R or D next to their name doesn’t matter to me. You all say you hate Obama so much but are willing to go with a candidate that would just ease up on the accelerator rather than turn the car around. If we’re not going to turn the car around, might as well put the pedal to the metal so we can finally start REAL recovery. It’s going to hurt. Oh boy is it going to hurt. But we need to hurt to save our country. Putting a band aid on a gunshot wound won’t save the patient.
If we can’t have Ron Paul, who will fight to save our country, I’d rather keep Obama. That way, when the collapse happens, it’s not under the guise of Conservatism and Capitalism. If someone like Romney becomes president, he won’t change anything that will actually fix our country, but rather, when the collapse does happen, it’ll make the conservative platform the fault of it all.
At that point, it’s game over.
