Bachmann Flubs Revolutionary War Geography in New Hampshire

NASHUA, N.H. (AP) — U.S. Rep. Michele Bachmann of Minnesota stood before New Hampshire Republicans with a tea bag clutched in her hand Saturday, but her grasp on Revolutionary War geography wasn’t quite as tight.
Before headlining a GOP fundraiser, the possible presidential hopeful told a group of students and conservative activists in Manchester, “You’re the state where the shot was heard around the world in Lexington and Concord,” according to video posted online by WMUR-TV.
But those first shots of the Revolutionary War were fired in Massachusetts, not New Hampshire. Though Bachmann probably wasn’t the first to confuse Concord, N.H., with Concord, Mass., her mistake was striking given her roots in the tea party movement, which takes its name from the dumping of tea into Boston Harbor by angry American colonists in December 1773, 16 months before the Battle of Lexington Green.
Some 30 miles to the north and with tea bag in hand, Bachmann was greeted with applause when she asked the crowd, “How about a United States president that gets what the American people want in 2012?” and later proclaimed, “Are you in for 2012? I’m in!”
She later clarified that she is committed to denying President Barack Obama a second term, not necessarily running herself. That decision will come by early summer, she said, adding that she was no closer to making it Saturday than she was before her first political trip to New Hampshire.
For the state that holds the earliest presidential primary, it was another day, another Minnesota politician with possible White House aspirations. Bachmann’s trip overlapped one day with former Gov. Tim Pawlenty’s latest visit, offering voters a glimpse of their contrasting styles.
Pawlenty, a former two-term governor, has taken a more tradition path to exploring a White House bid: traveling to key states, spreading money to potential allies through his political action committee and publishing a memoir as he left office. On Friday, he brushed off reporters’ attempts to get him to criticize fellow Republican Mitt Romney on health care, and in remarks at a New Hampshire hospital, offered subdued criticism of Obama’s national health care law saying “I know the country just had a huge debate about all of this, and my side lost, at least for now. But I hope we can have a continued discussion.”
To be sure, Pawlenty faced a roomful of skeptical physicians in one of the most liberal corners of the state, while Bachmann spoke before an enthusiastic, conservative crowd that included tea party groups from New Hampshire and Massachusetts. She called Obama’s health care overhaul the “ultimate example of arrogance.”
“The real problem is the arrogant elites in Washington, D.C., who think they know how to run your lives far better than you,” she said. “You can’t be trusted to run your lives, they have to run your lives for you.”
She said the bill included $105 billion in spending that Obama and Democrat leaders intentionally hid.
“Did he just forget to mention that, oh, by the way, we’ve got $105 billion in this bill that we’re going to implement socialized medicine? No, this was intentional.
“It needed to be implemented immediately to get its tentacles all through your lives and our government and our institutions so that no matter who was elected in the future, your franchise, your vote would be neutralized. Because they would get their way.”
Bachmann, who only recently has begun traveling to early nominating states, rose through the Minnesota ranks on social issues and is a favorite of the tea party in Congress, where she is in her third term. A formidable fundraiser, she’s also built a national following through her blunt commentary on cable news shows.
Her speech was briefly interrupted by protesters who had been allowed in the room after portraying themselves as civic-minded college students who wanted to hear Bachmann. Less than half an hour after they were publically welcomed by the event organizers, they marched across the conference room, holding signs and chanting “Michele Bachmann we insist, end the AIDS treatment waiting list.”
The protest was an apparent reference to the state- and federally-funded AIDS Drug Assistance Program. Many cash-strapped states have taken steps to cap enrollment, drop patients or institute waiting lists. Bachmann thanked them for the “love,” as they were quickly ushered out.
“We‘re seeing this kind of response because the left knows we’re coming and we’re serious about 2012,” she said.

Speeches are overrated anyway. I’ve heard enough analogies, wordplay, and historical references to last a lifetime. It’s all just noise now. Chris Christie seems to be the only one who knows how to cut to the chase.

As far as I can see, Palin and Bachmann are the ONLY serious candidates for president among Republicans. Chris Christie is a liberal Republican. Just because he talks and acts tough on the budget and with public sector unions, that doesn‘t mean he’s good on anything else. Palin was right, it doesn‘t take courage to cut spending and play hardball with government unions when you’re broke and HAVE to make cuts. Anyone else curious where Chris Christie is on Obamacare? 28 states have sued in federal court, but not New Jersey. Hmmm. All we need is to elect a Republican house and senate in 2012 and then have a RINO president who won’t sign its repeal. How awful that would be.

People, she was one of many RINOs who VOTED FOR AN EXTENSION OF THE PATRIOT ACT. Open your eyes. Beyond that, she’s not very smart. Sorry, but that’s the cold hard truth. She couldn’t hold her own in the interview with Chris Matthews, you think she’ll hold up in Presidential debates? Not way. The point I wanted to make is that she voted for the extension of the Patriot Act, which as we all know, is very unpatriotic.

Give me a break! Obama grew up having “57 States” hammered into his skull. That’s the reason he said it, just like he said, “My Muslim faith” to George Stephanopoulos.

Does anyone remember the state where the famous Concord Grape Jelly originated? Or the “invention of the potato chip city” considered by some the turning point of the revolutionary war?
Why is everybody picking on this one statement? Michelle has been a strong Conservative Voice to the right of Reagan, Nixon and Eisenhower!

Posted on March 12, 2011 at 7:24pmThe intellectual pool from Minnesota seems to be pretty shallow. This is the State that elected Jesse “The Joke” Ventura and Stuart Smally to high office. If somebody managed to get Bullwinkle on the ballot, he’d be a shoe-in. B(achmann) P(alin) O(’Donnell) is as stale as BTO, and Pawlenty’s got as much of a chance to win as a glass of milk, AND the milk’s more interesting. Bachmann! Are you copying this transmission? Put down the tea bag and pick up a book! When your name is being tossed around as a presidential candidate trying to defeat the Soros money machine, you can afford NO mistakes. Your SOTU response to the response pretty much ended whatever chance you may of had to win the Republican nomination, but, since Obama would obviously annihilate you in any debate, that’s a good thing. Please go join Palin at the bar and let the men handle this.

Posted on March 12, 2011 at 7:38pmOK folks. Let’s think about this for a little while. In the famous Obama flub, Obama had meant to say he had campaigned in all 47 states (of the contiguous 48, which is why he says “one to go”). Bachmann actually went all the way to New Hampshire to say that thinks happened there that did not. Obama of course does not think that there are 57 states, but Bachmann seems to honestly think Lexington and Concord happened in NH. Is it so hard to see why these two flubs are no the same?

Nice try, PP. There are two problems with that explanation. First, he didn’t just blurt out the number “57”. He said “50” followed by a long recall pause, and then pronounced the “seven”. That means his memory was hanging on to the number “50” while he tried to recall the missing number. In other words, “57” was a painfully slow, broken-up response, the kind used by adults when they are uncertain of the correct number (he never self-corrected), or by children when they still don’t know how to count (in O‘bum’s case it’s probably both). Second, he ended the sentence in the same uncertain tone: “ I THINK one left to go” [emphasis added].
The truth is he didn’t know, and his memory defaulted to his schooling in Indonesia: 57 Allah states. That’s our first un-American president – historic, indeed.

Posted on March 12, 2011 at 11:06pmThis does nothing to detract from the fact that Bachman is this country’s foremost expert on the Constitution and the opinions and philosophy of the Founding Fathers. She is a profound intellectual but, okay, she misspoke. Big deal. President Obama is no match for her in intelligence or for that matter of the Constitution. Obama is has no education in Constitution, he’s just a community organizer and we all know that organizing people is bad. If it is God’s will that she runs, she’ll win, unless Palin runs.

How is your brother doing? Hope and pray you have been in contact with him and that he is ok and safe.
For the story I am shocked the Bachmann came to my state without any indication of me knowing. It wasn’t posted on the local tea party events… sad I missed her speech. But as for history it’s no excuse that she should not have known the first shots happened in Mass not here in NH.
I’ve been to the Boston harbor where the tea was dumped into the ocean and it is an amazing site to go to. Michelle Bachmann I have tremendous respect for you, but as a tea party patriot you should of known that. Though I know we are all not perfect and will not cast the first stone as so many have.

Posted on March 14, 2011 at 11:40amThe conservatives who see no problem voting for someone as fact-challenged and obviously stupid as Bachmann really are too dumb to vote in my opinion. If they continue to insist that having a lack of command of the facts is okay for government leaders, then they should be forced to go to a plumber or witch doctor rather than a physician when they are sick. The harm they do to their country they should have inflicted on themselves. Then perhaps they will no longer take on that luxury of pretending that intelligence doesn’t matter.
To say that you don’t need a base level of knowledge and intelligence to hold the most important and powerful job in the world is just idiocy. And there is no short supply of this amongst conservatives, whose very world view requires such ignorance. I hope they turn out in droves and nominate her. Obama will cruise to another four years.

Her career is finished.
————————————————————————-
like Rep. Hank Johnson’s career is finished by saying that the island of Guam would tip over and capsize from over population by the addition of 8,000 marines? Obama believes there are 60 states. He said he has been in 57 states and he has two more to go and one his campain will not allow him to go to. Let’s not start on the plethora of gaffes by the vice president, he is what we say in the military a target enriched environment.
I find it amazing that progressives totally ignore the gaffes of other democrats or fellow progressives while calling the conservative or republican politicians stupid when they make gaffes.
