Bachmann: Liberals Welcome at Legal Summits

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — U.S. Rep. Michele Bachmann said Friday that liberal commentators and legal experts would be just as welcome as conservatives to participate in a series of constitutional discussions she is organizing for members of Congress.

The Minnesota Republican and founder of the congressional tea party caucus drew criticism after Supreme Court Justice Antonin Scalia, one of the most conservative members of the high court, agreed to appear at the first event Jan. 24. Some legal experts noted that the court could soon find itself wading into contentious political issues, including efforts to strike down President Barack Obama’s health care overhaul, and said justices who appear at events sponsored by a prominent Republican could do damage to their impartiality.

But Bachmann said it’s not uncommon for Supreme Court justices to speak publically about their legal philosophies. In November, Scalia and Justice Stephen Breyer, one of the most liberal members of the court, sparred over various constitutional questions during a rare public debate sponsored by Texas Tech University Law School.

Bachmann said Democrats and Republicans would all be welcome to attend.

“The idea is just to create an opportunity for us to wrap our minds around our magnificent founding documents before we cast votes,” Bachmann said.

Bachmann said guests could include both legal scholars and commentators, and future seminars are likely to include presentations by former U.S. Attorney General Edwin Meese and lawyer Mark Levin, a conservative commentator and radio host. She said other Supreme Court justices are also considering her invitation.

While so far only conservative speakers are planned, Bachmann said she’d be interested in lining up liberal speakers as well.

“This is bipartisan and we are interested in hearing from voices all the way along the spectrum,” she said.

Bachmann, who has drawn a national following with frequent guest appearances on cable and network news shows, broke fundraising records with a $13 million haul en route to winning her third term in Minnesota’s 6th Congressional District. She hinted earlier this week at a possible presidential run in 2012, and plans a trip later this month to the early caucus state of Iowa.

Bachmann said Friday that she intended to deliver speeches in Iowa and other early-primary states because she wants to help launch a conversation that shapes the agenda of the next Republican candidate for president. She said she wants that candidate to be a “strong, courageous constitutional conservative,” but wouldn’t answer questions about how seriously she is considering a possible bid.

“It’s a mistake to spend a year speculating on who the eventual nominee will be,” Bachmann said. “We need to spend the next year talking about the issues that will define the race.”

This is well done Rep. Bachmann.

I’ve written and asked my Representative to attend these seminars and will continue to do so. Constantly reminding him of his yea vote on the patently unconstitutional Bill of Attainder (H.R. 1586) and equally intrusive (H.R. 1664). A remedial course on what he’s sworn to support and defend is entirely in order. Perhaps yours could use one as well.

    Cheers,

      Texas_Tip,

Just curious. What’s your beef (that’s a Texas quip) with limiting the executive bonuses at corporate entities that took our TARP money? How are these bills patently unconstitutional? Employers can still pay these bonuses from other funds….but it’s entirely within the purview of the American Taxpayers to stipulate that our money not be used for that purpose.

Obviously you’re familiar with the fine print, and I am not, so I would welcome any additional information to support your contention that we should contact our Legislators.

I think it’s a great idea and if liberals do decide to show up and derail the process, they will just make themselves look bad. Think of it as a freebie for constitutional conservatives.

People still don’t get the Saul Alinsky strategy. Liberals throw conservatives off message with insults, disagreements, vulgarity and other such nonsense. Then you see people arguing w liberals and they accomplished what they set out to do and how did this help conservatives when no one can hear the message over the arguing?

Everyone has a right to their opinion but I for one am tired of hearing people say crap like. “She’s not Presidential Material” or whatever. Who says she isn’t ? Magaret Thatcher is a prime example of what women can do while the cowardly men hide and monitor how something might affect their careers. We have too many tough guys with big mouths who do nothing but blow hot air around. Palin and Bachmann are among the few conservatives that think outside the box and actually work for us. I’m not counting on finding any“ real men” to run for president with the conservative conviction of these fine ladies. The ladies are carrying the water while the boys are playing in the corner with their dingaling and looking at their crystal ball. So much for the peanut gallery. I say we feed those that WORK not just talk. Palin and Bachmann work!!!

Yeah, like “Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion”.

If you want a second opinion, you can always ask John Adams, “The government of the United States is not, in any sense, founded on the Christian religion.”

@FOXHOLEATHEIST: The Adams’ quote you listed above was taken out of context, and incomplete. Whether this was done in ignorance or intentionally, is irrelevent. Article XI of the Treaty of Tripoli (1797) which you misquoted reads: “As the government of the United States of America is not in any sense founded on the Christian religion as it has in itself no character of enmity [hatred] against the laws, religion or tranquility of Musselmen [Muslims] and as the said States [America] have never entered into any war or act of hostility against any Mahometan nation, it is declared by the parties that no pretext arising from religious opinions shall ever produce an interruption of the harmony existing between the two countries.”

Article XI attempts to define for Tripoli that the United States did not have a federally enforced religious constitution, like they had, i.e., they were definative Muslim nations as expressed through their written law (theocracy). Additionally, it was important to distinguish that the United States not be compared to European Christian nations, who had previously engaged in Holy Wars with the Muslim nations.

Overwhelmingly, the statements from the Founding Fathers of the United States were that the principles outlined in the Declaration of Independence, The U.S. Constitution, and the Bill of Rights, were in fact based on Christianity, a Judeo/Christian ethic, and the fact that there is a Creator God. It is the foundation of the United States.

While you’re (mis) quoting Adams, here’s one for you: “The general Principles, on which the Fathers achieved Independence, were the only Principles in which that beautiful Assembly of young Gentlemen could Unite, …. And what were these general Principles? I answer, the general Principles of Christianity, in which all those Sects (different Christian denominations) were united: And the general Principles of English and American Liberty, in which all those young Men United, and which had United all Parties in America, in Majorities sufficient to assert and maintain her Independence.

Now I will avow, that I then believed, and now believe, that those general Principles of Christianity, are as eternal and immutable, as the Existence and Attributes of God; and that those Principles of Liberty, are as unalterable as human Nature and our terrestrial, mundane System.” (Source: John Adams to Thomas Jefferson, June 28th, 1813, from Quincy. The Adams-Jefferson Letters).

Additionally, in 1806, the Jefferson Administration negotiated and adopted a new Treaty. Article XI was removed during renegotiations. There’s a lot of reasonable speculation as to why the Article was there and then removed. As Glenn says, “educate yourself.”

I love it when anti-christ liberals start quoting the founding fathers to prove the supposed secular roots of the nation. Here’s another by John Adams.
“The hope of a Christian is inseparable from his faith. Whoever believes in the divine inspiration of the Holy Scriptures must hope that the religion of Jesus shall prevail throughout the earth. Never since the foundation of the world have the prospects of mankind been more encouraging to that hope than they appear to be at the present time. And may the associated distribution of the Bible proceed and prosper till the Lord shall have made ‘bare His holy arm in the eyes of all the nations, and all the ends of the earth shall see the salvation of our God’ (Isaiah 52:10).”

Republicans cherish, guard and hold true the Constitution. Democrats look to skirt, marginalize and render it ineffective at every turn.
The difference between Republicans and Democrats is kin to that of dogs and cats. A dog devotion and love will stay until the bitter end…. even lay down and die next to your cold body.
A cat feigns love, demands affection and, if left in the room after you died…… would eat you.

You know, the SCOTUS and 200+ years of Constitutional case law exist for a reason: the Constitution, while providing a singularly brilliant framework is often really insufficient when dealing with specifics. Yet, those agreeing with YOUR ideology know exactly how it should be applied.

Bachman may end up regreting her statement, “This is bipartisan and we are interested in hearing from voices all the way along the spectrum,” There are too many liberals who would not come to learn but to voice their disdain for the founding documents before the lessons are even under way. Just look what happened at the reading of the Constitution on the floor of the house. Shout out in protest before listening is the M.O. of many.

Since that isn’t going to happen at least the conservatives will know who has the socialist disease. I hope this will be on TV or at least filmed to be replayed during elections. One thing I learned from David Barton is that the Constitution is based on Five basic principals that are established in the Declaration of Independence. Anyone not familiar with these five principals usually has difficulty upholding and comprehending the original intent and purpose of critical Articles of the Constitution. I thind Bachmann should invite David Barton up front before this potentially deteriorates into rhetorical or Idealogolical war.

Thank you for the link St. Mich. However it’s voting records, not speeches, that we need to pay attention to. Our current President convinced 53% of voting Americans to vote for him based on media presence and speeches. I’m not saying that is true of Pence. I am saying that it’s too easy to say anything in a speech aimed to that particular audience. And in speeches, most of what they say is very, very generalized. It’s much more difficult to wiggle on your actual record.

Well Foxhole…I think you are gonna knock hell dry…You may not believe in God now, you will when you meet him and he allows you to wander off to Satan’s house. Have your family throw a flame retardant suit in your casket, you are gonna need it…

FOXHOLE (the one under the tail)

You are the reason trying to have a conversation with libs is such a waste of time. You freaks can’t see your mental disorder and it frustrates you to the point of self destruction. It is truly fun to watch the libs make such asses of themselves. The debates the FOX news with the split screens are so funny to watch and are a perfect example of your mental disorder. I really can’t believe some of the crap you dorks claim as fact, delusional.

Maybe VP if she’s not interested in the top spot. She has definitely got her finger on the pulse of the TEA party, so a run for the top is a possibility. Go get ‘em, Michele!!!

I’ve seen what happens when a conservative speaks to a lib audience. Interested to see what happens here.

Thanks for sharing those deep thoughts Foxhole. Usually you only see such pearls of wisdom like yours are on the walls of men’s rooms in cheap bars. I always wondered what kind of morons wrote those, now I have a good idea of what kind of moron does.

Justices who appear at events sponsored by a prominent Republican could do damage to their impartiality, yet one can lecture at University of California-Berkeley that a wise Latina woman with the richness of her experiences would more often than not reach a better conclusion than a white male who hasn’t lived that life.”

The constitution is an excellent standard to run a corporation, and it is as plain as day to intelligent people that those who seek to have the word “promote” interpreted as “guarantee”, and the word “among” be interpreted as the word “within”, are doing so because they want to slip beyond the standards and make the government theirs to sell at will.

It is equally obvious that Scalia debating Breyer about the intent of the constitution is like having an experienced farmer debating a city boy about the role of weeds in the garden. Scalia will pull them where Breyer is content to nurture them because to do anything is else is being judgmental.

Bachman has more “BALLS” than most of the male gender in congress. She along with Palin has more backbone than the rest of them.

Excellent idea, and I do hope you all will be watching on CSPAN. Frankly, it’s a little tiring reading how the Democrats are “violating the Constitution” without ever reading a single reference to exactly when or how the Constitution is being violated.
