Rep. Michele Bachmann on Wednesday slammed President Barack Obama’s plan to quell rising gas prices, saying he’s “waving a tar baby in the air” to distract from the price at the pump.

Obama on Tuesday proposed a $52 million crackdown that would increase penalties on market manipulation by oil speculators and give federal regulators more authority and funding for enforcement.

In an interview with The Shark Tank, a conservative news site that focuses on Florida politics, the Minnesota congresswoman and former GOP presidential candidate scoffed at Obama’s plan and said “every single thing he does is filtered through a grid called his re-election.”

“This is just about waving a tar baby in the air and saying that something else is a problem,” Bachmann said. “I have never seen a more irresponsible president who is infantile in the way that he continually blames everybody else for his failure to first diagnose the problem and second to address the problem. It‘s always everyone else’s fault.”

The problem, Bachmann said, is that “liberals continue to lock up the energy resources that we have in the United States.“ She said Obama already has ”every tool at his disposal to deal with speculators,” from the Federal Trade Commission or the Security Exchange Commission.

“He said no to oil drilling, he said no to coal companies, he said no to fracking for natural gas and no to building the Keystone pipeline. Now he wants to blame people who are buying oil futures?” she said. “It’s anybody but Obama for Obama. And that’s why we have to call him out. The president is a complete and utter fraud and a hypocrite on this issue, with all due respect to the president.”

The term “tar baby” is considered a racial epithet by some.

Last year, Colorado Republican Rep. Doug Lamborn apologized after using the term on the radio in discussing Obama‘s economic policies and saying being associated with the president could tarnish a politician’s image.

“Now I don’t want to even have to be associated with him. It is like touching a tar baby and you get it — you’re stuck, and you’re part of the problem now,” Lamborn said.

Update: Bachmann press secretary Becky Rogness told Politico Thursday morning Bachmann’s comment had “nothing to do with race” and that she used the term as a colloquialism to mean a “sticky situation.”

“The Congresswoman values all human life – regardless of race, color or creed,” Rogness told Politico in an email. “If you listen to the interview, Rep. Bachmann was making a point about the President’s poor understanding of oil prices, which has nothing to do with race. The President doesn’t understand the oil market and hence, has gotten himself into a sticky situation.”

      It’s difficult to argue with Bachmann on this. Under Obama, drilling and exploration on Federal lands has gone down by around 50%. He’s used the EPA and Salazar to stymie the coal and natural gas industries. Last Friday Obama appointed Heather Zichal (a notorious anti oil/coal/natural liberal who’s even written an op-ed in the NYT applauding Obama’s decision to turn down the Keystone Pipeline) as head of his “task force” on fracking and was Obama’s former assistant on “Climate Change”. Take a guess where that one will go…. This is how creepy Obama can be. He crows about production increasing under his administration while not admitting that it’s only increased on private and state lands that are away from his federal clutches. In fact as I noted earlier..the lands where he does have influence…the driling and exploration has gone down significantly.

If you really think the oil companies want cheaper oil or a supply amount that would result in lower prices you have really overdosed on the Koch bros. koolaid.

    Every time gas prices spike at the pump, our elected officials, that will do anything to mis-direct the anger from citizens, hold new hearings to “get those evil oil men”.
    The thing is, they never find any wrong doing, so they all slink back under their rocks and hope no one mentions the waste of tax payer money for another bogus hearing.

    This latest rant from Barry is a 2-fer. He’s after evil oil speculators plus they are all evil rich Wall streeters!
    What could be better?
    Well perhaps doing something that might actually reduce the price of oil, like the XL pipeline, opening ANWAR, permitting oil drilling on Federal lands. Instead of whining that we have to save the planet. Just what are saving it for, or for whom?

      And of course that which is of men is of this world which is in darkness which is of satan.
      A vicious cycle until Light enters in.

What principles do you operate from other than the principle that somehow you are superior to those who work hard to be the best person they can be for their families, communities, their country, the world and their God?
      Is your sense of superiority based on your perception that others work and struggle in vain? You are so wise because you know all is futile. You in your superiority know that nothing is worth sacrificing for? Think about it. What have YOU accomplished other than trying to drag others down to your own level.

    Tar can be from oil and is black, sticky and entraps.

    Ms Bachman knows exactly what she is saying. Black caucus will have a fit, yet, I don’t see her apologizing. Seems like she is purposely putting a match to start a massive media firestorm here?

    BTW I am not supporting her comment, I would never had said it or even thought it, just observing.

      Bachmann never knows what she is saying other than to create a controversy to get attention. Like Ann Coulter she is a grown up version of the obnoxious girl in the front of the classroom waving here hand widely because she wants attention. While I appreciate your reference, MB clearly used it in as a racially charged metaphor. She is a very sad, sad individual. She should also consider actually doing something useful why she sits in Congress and takes tax payer money.

    The idiotic left will jump all over this term…even though African, Buddhist and Spanish culture ALL have variations of a tar baby in their myths…Uncle Remus is the most modern one, being American in nature. It may have originated from the Cherokee myth ‘The Tar Wolf’…IF the idiotic left makes a big deal out of this, they will show not only their ignorance but also a basic disregard for a High School History or Literature course…

      These comments sure stir-up emotions. As a kid, we did not eat-out that often but when we did, there was a place called “Sambos Pancake House”. It was a glorious place to dine because the story was pictured close to the ceiling & all around the room, animation, and while eating my pancakes, I marveled at the sight. The music of the 40′s & forward years had all races, but through music, I connected with the artists and didn’t notice “the color of the skin” (it is a bazar concept to me). I do notice, however, being white, that we “white” people do not age, skin wise, as well as others. I have European genes but secretly always wanted to have American Indian genes so I could have their beautiful skin. Hope that does not sound what we white people are called,,racist. I really don’t care to be honest with you….whatever color of skin, I don’t like mean-spirited people and don’t care to be around them.

      Alright, getting confused as to the new english for black language in America….OK, I call my brother my brother. Am I anow calling him black? My brother loves fried chicken and watermellon….am I calling him black again? He calls his son tarbaby and terd, depending on the moment, is that meaning now in new english, he is black too? OK, so then I catch someone say “you folks”……my parents are my folks….are they pissed at me for calling them black for all these years? Does anyone have a handbook for the new age of PC? Also, does reverend now belong to blacks in America only? Really need a new book on this. Oh, and I am mixed race…..not sure if I am ******* off my dad or mom these days….

      After all, he did campaign overseas before becoming President in how many countries? Then he is leveling the wealth and selling US to China.
