The 2012 GOP Presidential candidates are firming up their positions and staking claims on territories they believe will influence voters in Iowa and all across the country. Rep. Michele Bachmann was in her home state of Iowa yesterday and planted her flag firmly in the ground on the subject of protecting America’s Southern border.
Appearing on Simon Conway’s radio show on WHO NEWSRADIO 1040 in Des Moines, “President Bachmann” (her words) promised to build the border fence while also vowing to investigate the seemingly excessive convictions of some border agents:
The full fourteen minute interview with candidate Bachmann – covering everything from her firm stance on the Debt Ceiling to migraines, attacks on her family, and even GOP backstabbing, can be seen here (the only edit here removed traffic report and commercials):

Posted on July 21, 2011 at 11:47amEstimates are that a border fence would cost $49 billion. Interesting assertion coming from an Individual who says they won’t vote for the debt ceiling and government spending is out of control. Did we not get into the situation we are in by members of congress spending money for things they have promised their constituents? When they all do it, it adds up to real money.

Posted on July 21, 2011 at 12:48pmBlowback, Bachmann is a “professional politician”. Professional Politicians by definition are crooks, criminals and liars! They don’t think they are, they think that is just the way of politics. They will tell you whatever you want to hear, they will wear whatever cloak they need to wear to appeal to a certain demographic, race or group. Every politician we have had in this country for at least the last seventy-five years, possibly longer, has made promise after promise to the voters and most of them were hollow, meaningless rhetoric. If Republicans don’t come up with a candidate that appeals to the average working Joe, his wife, minorities and some disgruntled Democrats, we are going have Obama for four more years. I’m sorry to say that none of the current candidates can defeat Obama because they appeal to a VERY small percentage of the voting public.

Posted on July 21, 2011 at 1:44pm@jcase16 Perhaps, but if it worked is a big proviso. And M. Bachmann didn’t mention that as part of her rationale for building the fence. IMHO i think we need to cracked down hard on the medium and small businesses that are hiring them. $250,000 per occurrence should be enough to stop a major part of the problem. Another big part would be to undertake major assaults on the drug cartels. I am certainly in the camp that once you indicate illegal the discussion should end, they should be deported. But the vast majority come to work not to freeload, take away the work.

Posted on July 21, 2011 at 1:45pmShe is just saying stuff to appeal to her base. The border of the US and Mexico is just under 2000 miles. To give some perspective, the distance from LA to New York is just under 2500 miles. So this fence would span 80% of the breadth of the United States.
Somebody mentioned a figure of 49 billion to build which I can’t dispute (although it seems low to me). But I assume that’s just building it. What about maintaining it? How will the fence keep people from tunneling under or just cutting through it with bolt cutters? So that means you have to have surveillance.
Folks, this idea is so irrational that, if you think it’s a good idea, worth the cost and that would actually keep anybody out, you may need to see your doctor.
It’s easy to limit to limit the number of people crossing the border. Stop giving them jobs. Penalize people that hire them. Nobody comes here for the view, they come here to make money.

Bachman’s 1st term in Congress started in Jan 2007. She is only 6 months into her 3rd term.
And YOU think she’s been there too long?
REALLY?
Eh, doesn’t matter.
Just due to her grade on Illegal Immigration I will vote for her.
And those migraines?
Hmmm, that’s a hoot.
JFK was on Percodan 24 hours a day (was on a drip at night) and actually spent more time IN a wheelchair than out before he was assassinated. He was only sleeping 2-3 hours a night due to his back pain. Would you say JFK was incapacitated?
FDR was IN a wheelchair 24X7! And HIS pain was responsible for MANY hours behind closed doors. How about FDR’s competence?
And there is MANY more Presidents (and other Political leaders). Sen Ted “I Killed A Girl” Kennedy spent MONTHS incapacitated over the last 12 years of his life.
Sen Byrd spent more time in a hospital bed than in the Senate chamber the last 4-5 years of HIS life.
Etc, etc, etc.
So now, Bachmann can’t handle it?

Posted on July 22, 2011 at 6:12amSan Diego section of border fence cut illegal crossings by 80% I believe. The cost of building the fence is far cheaper than the financial damage these criminal invaders do. I believe that is about double what California spends annually on illegal immigrants. Dont forget, we also have drug cartels, foriegn agents and provacateers, and terrorists comming across. Monitered??? Of course. It is already monitered by US Border Patrol, but a fence would give them a more defendable position. Without borders you dont have countries, you have territories. Go Michelle 2012.

You are no where near a point of diminishing returns. Try looking at the whole picture instead of glim off half cocked and instulting the only people who seem to be the grown ups In the room. Anyway, I would be in support of a “fence” if we, say, shut down a bunch of military bases worldwide to compensate for the cost. As to the actual argument at hand, yes our country is hemmoriging in the hundreds of billions mark a year for benefits being paid to illegal immigrants. Build the fence and you greatly reduce that amount. Close bases? We don’t own those bases overseas. They typically belong to the boat country and we lease them. Just like the Air Base I was stationed at in Korea and the air base in Kuwait I was deployed too. While out military spending should be cut back some, our biggest problem is our unfunded liabilities in entitlement spending. A large chunk of those liabilities would self correct after removing unauthorized recipients IE illegal immigrants not paling into the system yet using it. The best way to do that is to stop the flow ( or at least greatly reduce that flow) of illegals coming across the border. You spend even 10 billion and it is worth the cost compared to the billions upon billions upon billions that will be saved out of our entitlement spending alone.
Report Post »HUNITHUNIT
