Bachmann Rejects Chris Wallace‘s Apology for Asking if She’s a ‘Flake’

On yesterday’s Fox News Sunday, Chris Wallace asked guest Michele Bachmann whether “she was a flake.”
“The rap on you in Washington is that you have a history of questionable statements, some would say gaffes,…are you a flake?”
Responded a calm but frustrated-looking Bachmann: “Well I think that would be insulting to say something like that, because I’m a serious person.”
Here’s the clip of the full interview (which does cover a lot of substantive ground). The “flake” part enters in the 14th minute:
Shortly after the pre-taped interview aired on Fox News Sunday, Chris Wallace posted his regular, post-show “Wallace Unplugged” video. In it, he apologized for the question noting that many viewers were “more than perturbed” by the phrasing: “And since in the end it’s really all about the answers and not about the questions. I messed up, I’m sorry. I didn’t mean any disrespect.”
However, Bachmann doesn’t seem to be overly impressed with the apology at this point. Politico:
Via POLITICO’s Jennifer Epstein, Michele Bachmann isn’t accepting an apology from Fox News Sunday host Chris Wallace for asking her yesterday, “Are you a flake?”
ABC News’ Jon Karl, who’s been getting face-time with Bachmann in Waterloo in advance of her formal campaign announcement, played a clip of the web video in which Wallace said, “I messed up. I’m sorry.”
When Karl asked if she accepts the apology, Bachmann brushed aside the question this way: “I think that it’s insulting to insinuate that a candidate for president is less than serious.”
Trying the question again, Bachmann replied, “Those are the small issues. I’m focused on the big ones.”

I agree 100%. Logic and Argumentation are essential to debate and defense and offense in any arena of discourse. I encourage all people to either take classes on Logic and Argumentation or self teach themselves (the book “Logic for Dummies” is a great place to start the self teaching). Armed with the tools of rational ordered and correct thinking skills a person can progress in science, technology, religion (Logic actually defends the belief in God), and personal growth.
When a person can form a solid argument to defend their conclusions they convince others that they are correct, they spot errors in the arguments of opposition and it strengthens one’s self-confidence. Added to Logic and Argumentation a person should also practice an established set of values to include Loyalty, Duty, Respect, Service, Honor, Personal Courage and Faith (LeaDeRSHIP-F).
Adding the values to social interactions increases stature among peers and aids credibility and increases others’ willingness to accept what is said as true without lengthy explanations and proofs.
Recap: Ordered rational thought and practiced values makes a person the most respected and trusted possible and as such an effective LEADER of their peers.
Lead not follow: LeaDeRSHIP-F

Posted on June 27, 2011 at 9:22amI don’t think she should she accept his apology. His question was basically valid but the wording, phrasing & tactic was rude (from a journalistic / interviewer point of view). I want journalists to ask tough questions of potential candidates. I want to know who I’m voting for (especially if I’m likely to vote for them)..

Posted on June 27, 2011 at 10:27am“The rap on you in Washington is that you have a history of questionable statements, some would say gaffes,…are you a flake?”
Report Post »I agree, she should not accept the apology as it was not directed to her but to the audience.
Also, I am unsure as to the motive of Chris Wallace. I tend to judge mistakes based on past actions. Chris Wallace has been a fair, tough interviewer who is professional and courteous but tough to all his guests. So I am apt to toss this one word choice up to poor choice of words. However, it is a media tactic (used by propagandists on their enemies) to throw out a charge or descriptor that is baseless apologize for doing it, but continue to insinuate the charge the charge or descriptor in the future. The seed is planted now that “Michelle Bachmann is a flake.” It is now a part of the memory when it comes to voting in the primary.
As for the question itself, it does not follow the prompt. It is akin to “It is said that you like lions and tigers, some would say cats in general…Do you like to eat oranges?“ How does making controversial statements lead one to ask if that person is a ”flake”? Maybe if he asked her “are you a person who likes to stir up controversy?” it would make more sense and would be a legitimate question. That is a tough question, doesn’t call names and Bachmann could still hit it out of the park.
ApokTheGreat
Posted on June 27, 2011 at 10:32amThe answer I would like to hear to the proper question of “Do you like to stir up controversy? would go something like this:
Report Post »“I do not like to stir up controversy but I am not afraid to do it. Truth is controversial, it is hard to listen to, truth offends people. Truth exposes lies, truth frustrates evil. I speak the truth, therefore, even though it is not my intention to be controversial, controversy is unavoidable. I am attacked because I speak the truth, I flow with those punches and let the truth defend itself.”

I mean, for the love of God and your own dear Mothers, how can any reasonable mind not have asked that question about Pelosi, aka, Flipper???
I think Chris was making the point that these are the types of questions she’ll need to get used to, which is probably a good point. However, why didn’t he ask Jon Stewart if he was a “flake”? I think Stewart certainly fits that definition, along with countless other loony lefties.

People really need to understand that while FOX is a little more Conservatie than the other networks their agenda is not much different. Please be on guard always.
More on this point. Did anyone hear Brit Hume say last week that if we didn’t get behind these Wars and support the Libyan mission then we were just simply not Reagan Republicans? I literally thought I’d throw up. I will never look at that man in the same light again.
I suppose there was just no way that we could be of the opinion that the Wars cause for trouble than they are worth or that our funneling monety through the military is not always the wisest investment or heavens sake the money could be better spent rebuilding the infrastructure in America.. Seriously Brit, that was the day you ceased to be a serious journalist. The entire FOX news network is really beginning to reek!

Seriously, Chris, invite her back on at her convenience and apologize live.
Your question perpetuates the ridiculous and belittling accusation.
I understand it MAY have been unintentional. You may have meant to offer her a platform to address her detractors, but, as a professional, you should have known not to phrase it as an accusational question, but rather a third-person offer to respond. i.e., “…what do you have to say to THOSE PEOPLE?”

One example I wrote to the show about was that every time he referred to the “Bush tax cut,” he always used the Democrats’ “Bush tax cut for the wealthy” terminology for it.
This “flake” question he asked Michelle Bachmann shows that too and she was right to not acknowledge the apology. He was echoing what the radical Alinski-style smear merchants on the left have been saying, and I think he was doing so purposefully with the intention to plant that idea in the minds of his viewers.

Glenn says do your own research, so I did, I have seen her saying something in her own words, and I for one don’t like what I see.
You decide for yourselves.
I ran into this video of Michele Bachmann saying that God called on her to run for the Minnesota Senate, and she says on video “…and in the midst of all this, as if we did not have enough to do, He called me to run for the Minnesota state senate. I have no idea, and no desire to be in politics, absolutely none.”
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Af4cRJ8A308
This was the 2000 Minnesota Election, but just a year earlier…
Bachmann decided to run for the Stillwater School Board herself in 1999. In a move that still irks many locals, the state’s Republican Party lined up a slate of candidates, for what was supposed to be a nonpartisan race. There were five open seats that year, and 19 candidates. The GOP-endorsed candidates became known locally as the “Slate of Five.” Cecconi, who was running for re-election, says, “There was this overwhelming sentiment that we didn’t want our school system politicized.”

She handled it just fine, and that should be a testimony to anyone that has that criticism, tho’ it seems, if anyone would dismiss her like that, they either don’t know her, or aren’t going to be persuaded anyway ….

Posted on June 28, 2011 at 1:28pmI liked Chris Wallace, Couldnt belive it was a Fox interview and wondered what would happen if he ask Mitt or Barrack that same question, she should have slapped him, that would have been news and the press would have covered that exchange.

Posted on June 28, 2011 at 3:46pmShe did accept his apology when he called her, personally, and apologized. What a classy lady. That is just what she should have done and she handled it perfectly.

A “gay” and a “lesbian” would be long dead (the rule of LAW) before they even had a chance to marry. And with that right and unwavering statement, I officially announce my candidacy for President Of The United States! (And, yes, I DO have an AMERICAN birth certificate.)

Posted on June 28, 2011 at 8:34pmWallace is a “mole” at FOX……..a chip off the “old” block (head). That being the now 124 year old Mike Wallace. The younger Wallace has a boring nasal quality in his style and delivery….which was extremely difficult to hear as he had his head up the old wazoooooo again (butt)….I digress.
Any credibility for Wallace is gone…one more reason to shut off FOX.
How insulting.
More accurately…imagine if someone asked Christopher if he was a journalistic “butt head” on national television. Inappropriate……………yes. Accurate…………..YES!
Sexism lives on and is “acceptable” when talking to a non-Marxist/Progressive female.

Posted on June 29, 2011 at 12:31amI have always liked Chris Wallace…… and I continue to like him. So, he messed up and he directly apologized to her……….. and she did accept. Are you saying a person isn’t allowed to error once? Give Chris a break……….. and it did give Michelle a chance to get her assets out there….. I’m sure Chris will be much more careful from now on. He is NOT a closet liberal…….. I would hope conservatives would not do what liberals do all the time and that’s turn on someone for one mistake !! Conservatives are better than that….. at least, I think they are !
