Bachmann Reveals Plans for Presidential Announcement in Iowa Next Month

Bachmann Reveals Plans for Presidential Announcement in Iowa Next Month
DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — Republican Michele Bachmann is making plans for a presidential campaign announcement next month in Waterloo, Iowa, the city where the Minnesota congresswoman was born.

Bachmann trickled out the details in a conference call with reporters Thursday night but said she could still reverse course and sit out the 2012 White House campaign.

Bachmann was supposed to speak in person at a GOP dinner in downtown Des Moines, but a vote in Washington turned the appearance into a video message. Hundreds of Republicans watched her via a blurry, choppy Internet feed, where she profusely apologized for her absence and offered a rain check. The feed briefly cut out but aides quickly dialed back in.

Bachmann went on to speak about fighting terrorism, defending America’s founding documents and opposing legislation to raise the federal debt ceiling.

The Minnesota congresswoman says she has staff lined up in the states that start the presidential nominating process: Iowa, New Hampshire and South Carolina.

She says strong fundraising and other indicators make her confident about making a run.

It was a bizarre scene for an almost-campaign announcement.

Reporters huddled around a Des Moines hotel podium where Bachmann spoke from Washington.

“The announcement will be made in Iowa, and it will be made in Waterloo,” Bachmann said, adding that her Iowa birthplace would give her “every advantage a girl would want to have.”

Asked if former Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin’s decision would have any bearing on hers, Bachmann said she was acting “independent of what any other candidate decides, no matter which candidate gets in and which candidate gets out.”

Of the Palin-Bachmann political overlap, Bachmann said: “I don’t believe that any two candidates are interchangeable. Each one of us brings our own unique skill sets into this race.”

If there’s any state where Minnesota Rep. Michele Bachmann could stir the Republican race for president, it’s Iowa.

Waterloo gives her a home-field advantage of sorts. The tea party, the GOP’s most energized segment, loves her. So do social conservatives, who cheer her forceful advocacy of gay marriage bans, abortion restrictions and home-school rights.

All are certain to play well with a GOP caucus electorate filled with Christian evangelicals who are emboldened by the clout they wielded in 2008 when they helped former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee win the caucuses.

Yet if she does run, Iowa Republicans say she’ll have to invest time courting them in intimate settings, not just drop by for big speeches. She scrapped a Thursday night trip to Des Moines, where she was to attend a GOP dinner, so she could be in Washington for a vote on anti-terrorism legislation.

“It’s too important for her to miss that vote,” her spokesman, Doug Sachtleben, said. Bachmann still planned to make remarks via video hookup.

Bachmann hoped to arrive in Iowa in time for events on Friday, including a lunchtime speech in Davenport.

The three-term congresswoman will announce her 2012 plans as soon as next week, and advisers describe her as inclined to get into the race.

While in Iowa this week, Bachmann was due to hold private meetings with pastors, business leaders and elected officials. Sachtleben said it wasn’t immediately clear which of the events would still occur. She was also planning to meet with supporters who have been building a network to facilitate a 2012 bid.

“I don‘t think it’s a matter of if she’s going to run, I think it‘s when she’s going to announce,” said state Sen. Kent Sorenson, a tea party Republican who would take a lead role in a Bachmann campaign. “The people in Iowa are chomping at the bit and ready for her to jump in with both feet.”

She would join a wide-open GOP field that’s becoming clearer with each passing week. Tea party favorite Sarah Palin, the 2008 GOP vice presidential nominee, is among those still considering a run, and her candidacy would affect Bachmann because the two would compete for the same pool of voters in Iowa.

If Palin were to run, “Bachmann’s star is going to fade,” said Jeff Jorgensen, chairman of the Pottawattamie County GOP in western Iowa.

But Palin isn’t in the race, leaving Huckabee’s network of supporters and donors in Iowa up for grabs. Bachmann has made no secret of her attempts to fill the void the Baptist minister left in the race, and suggested in interviews after he bowed out that she was more likely to run.

Bachmann aides say she would run a populist campaign much like Huckabee’s, but with an asset he lacked: the ability to raise enough money to compete in states beyond Iowa if she were to win it. She’s raised more than $2.5 million since she’s been flirting with a White House bid.

She urged her donor base Wednesday to help her meet a $240,000 goal in the 24 hours leading up to her Des Moines speech.

“My family and I are prayerfully considering what the next 18 months or so may bring,” Bachmann wrote in an email pitch. “We’ve seen incredible support pouring in; the Team Bachmann momentum is building and very encouraging as we look to our next steps.”

She’ll need more than money to prevail in Iowa, where voters have come to expect personal and repeated outreach from candidates before making their picks.

Activists say that while she’s forged strong bonds nationally with the libertarian-conservative network, she doesn’t have a local lock on tea party support.

“There‘s certainly no way she’s going to come into Iowa and sweep up the entire tea party movement. There‘s no way that’s going to happen,” said Charlie Gruschow, a founder of the Des Moines Tea Party. He‘s the Iowa state director for former pizza magnate Herman Cain’s campaign, and said Texas Rep. Ron Paul also is attractive to tea party members.

Bachmann is certain to face competition for values voters from former Sen. Rick Santorum of Pennsylvania and former Minnesota Gov. Tim Pawlenty, both of whom are stressing their faith and records on issues such as opposition to abortion.

Scott Bailey, president of the Network of Iowa Christian Home Educators, said while Bachmann’s experience with home-schooling her own children gives voters “an initial interest and makes them want to know more,” the connection won’t automatically translate into caucus support.

Bachman was a tax attorney for the IRS, She served as a Minnesota Senator from 2000 until 2006, she has been in congress since 2007…that’s FOUR years. She/husband are small business owners.
I think she’s qualified Sir….far more qualified than our current president.

Her vote yesterday to support an extension of the Patriot Act clearly demonstrates her want to destroy this country starting with the abolishment of the liberties granted to the People by the Constitution.
I supported her up until her vote yesterday at which time I withdrew my financial support for her Presidential campaign.

Anyone who support Michelle Bachman after her vote to extend the “Un”-Patriot Act might want to re-evaluate their position on Our Unalienable Rights provided by the very same Constitution that she just voted to destroy.
Any legislator that voted to extend the Patriot Act should be arrested and tried for treason as they have taken an oath to uphold and to protect the Constitution
And anyone who votes to promote a furtherance of her political agenda is even less honorable than Michelle Bachman!!!!.

First, they‘ll say Bachmann is ’stupid’, while ignoring Obow’s countless gaffes.

Then, they‘ll say she has no ’resume’–ignoring that their precious half-white Barry has no verifiable credentials, either.

After that will come the other liberal staples:

Bachmann wants to kick grandma down the stairs
      Bachmann wants to torture Moslems
      Bachmann hates blacks
      Bachmann hates Mexicans
      Bachmann is a racist
      Bachmann hates gays
      Bachmann is anti- and counter-feminist

And the worst one, according to the Left: Bachmann is…is…IS…a Christian! ~fanning those evil vapors~

So we wait for them to come here…. nope sorry this is one of his bent ideas. What about the Christians being attacked around the world or other helpless or over run people? Ron Paul would not engage. Liberals have what I call ‘pet words’ that they throw out, like everyone needs to pee now and again. And it just isn’t a matter any more.

I don‘t care if I’m called a racist or a homophobe. None of that matters. But, what the Left isn’t getting, is that regular people are cheesed off and getting angrier. In the mainstream (as liberals love that term), no one really cares who’s black, white, gay–or whatever.

What matters to Americans are things like being able to have a job, take care of ourselves, and taking also taking care of those others we love. Liberals don’t see life like normal, mentally-healthy people do.

Liberals always have some kind of ’cause’, some ‘injustice that needs to be put right’.

      Pffft!

Speaking for myself, I’m going to kick back and wait to see what happens. I don’t believe the presidency matters all that much. My view is that the real power of the people lies with a Conservative Congress, and the States, and down to electing the local dog catcher.

Our liberty is in electing Conservatives to a veto-proof Congressional majority. Plus, Conservatives win election to governorships, state house majorities, attorneys general, mayorships, town councils, and local school boards.

      Romney is an undercover Progressive.
Romney is only appealing to the ‘Entitlement Zombies’ who are afraid of losing that Gov’t check.
If that’s the case…just vote for Obama, he’ll keep the checks rolling out.
Go look at the Romney videos on the web, they are plastered with Ron Paul 2012. The people want Dr. Ron Paul.

And this ‘ONLY guy who can beat obama’ crap. What bubble do you live in? Do you actually believe the lame stream media? Or are you just another establishment type? Here’s a fun little test:
Take any town or city in America and announce a Palin rally (or for that matter Bachmann rally), and a romney rally. 10 people will show up for ol’ mitt, 1,000+ would show up for the fine American Ladies…

Palin has what it takes to be POTUS, Balls! And the courage, determination, and experience with judicious spending. Even her stepping down as Gov of AK was to stop the flow of money going out to fight the left media with their multiple unwarranted charges. And, the fight took time out from her being able to perform her duties as Gov. So, would you all have wanted her to stay as Gov, let money flow out for all the court fights, take up an abnormal time from governance? Most only see “she quit”, look deeper and see she is a fiscal conservative and can make a judgment to protect the office of governor even at a cost to herself. I’ll take her as POTUS anyday. Bachmann may have experience in congress, but may(notice I said may) lack the mental agility to manuever quickly because of having been steeped in politics.

I really, really love this woman being in Congress. I‘d wouldn’t mind one bit having her as President. That‘s a vote I’d be more than EAGER to cast.

What I’m a afraid of with Michele running is that she is going to tick off Minnesotans with her “I was born in Iowa” schtick. I don’t want Minnesotans to wind up resenting her and NOT vote her back into Congress. She is ONE of the keepers…on an extremely SHORT list. I really hope this campaign (if she announces) really goes well for her. If she doesn’t make that announcement, I really hope Minnesotans don’t hold her actions over the past few months against her in 2012 (and vote her back into Congress…assuming she’ll run again for Congress). Good luck to her. We need to keep her!

Palin also, has achieved massive goals, that others envy and hate her for. Ron Paul has been fighting for the Constitution from his first day. He began this movement of returning to the Constitution before Beck, Palin, or Bachman. Be honest and give credit where it’s due..

Bachman adopted 24 kids to leave at home while she’s in Washington. That’s dumb and kind of irresponsible. Also, didn’t her family get some pork deal or a subsidy? Bachman tried to co opt the TEA party after the TEA parties had begun. She wasn’t a founder, just a band wagoner….Unelectable…

agree. If you really boil it down, we wouldn’t be having much of a national conservative conversation today without two things:

      1. The grassroots movement of the TEA Party – people like me and others here
      2. The public figures who had the stones to back the TEA Party and spread the message, as maligned as the movement was in the press.

I am solidly behind Palin, Bachman, West, and Cain

And for those who cry “unelectable” or “no resume”….our current POTUS was a community organizer. You can’t say out one side of your mouth that you are tired of the political establishment and pols in general, and out the other side say that these folks are unelectable. It’s one or the other.

Get behind the person who represents your beliefs the best and support them.

      @thebarbarian
“i hope she runs. this sets up the first of my top 3 picks for POTUS & VPOTUS .
      Bachman
      Palin
      West
      ANY COMBO WOULD ROCK!”

      My choices would be:

      Palin
      Bachmann
      Cain

      and like you said:

      ANY COMBO WOULD ROCK!

I like a LOT of what Cain is saying but I would find it very interesting, and I believe beneficial if it was to wind up Palin and Bachmann together in the White House. After they fumigate and get all the roaches and other miscellaneous nasty bugs out of there.

Right now she is the best we have IMO.
I don’t care for Pawlenty – looks like he took an online politician course – would never vote for Romney, Newt or Cain in the primary
I like her better than Palin – who is making way too much money to run – That bus ain’t cheap
We need her voice and Cains who is great at speeches but awful answering questions.
Maybe Perry gets in. West will not. Crissty will not.
If MB can’t knock off Romney my Tea Party has failed.
c’mon 8-28ers get in the game

Sorry Michelle, you’re a nice lady and all. Kind of conservative. But if you support the (mis-named)Patriot Act, you fail Constitutionalism 101. Maybe if you hang around Ron Paul you can learn to become a better conservative.

“There are too many candidates that we think are TEA Party candidates. Between Bachman, Cain, Paul, probably Palin and Christi, the TEA Party vote will be so divided that a RINO will definitely win. We need to all agree on one candidate as a group to defeat the RINO’s.”

Isn’t that the point of the Primaries? to weed out the candidates that don’t make muster and the last one standing everyone gets behind? with more tea party candidates running, a better chance for a tea Party nominee. Palin, Bachmann, Cain. These are the 3 I like most right now. I like Ron Paul, for his solid beliefs and his platform, but he will Never get enough of a base to win,

Lucky for Iowa, Bachman talks a lot of fertilizer where ever she goes. Corn there could be 20 feet tall if she goes on a speaking tour…

@THEBARBARIAN — Yes, me too – however, get ready for RICK PERRY of Texas to announce he’s running. He‘s my state’s governor (TX) & that’s the talk here. I really like him of course too so I’d say I like Palin, Bachmann, Perry, West. Perry is a real Consv., fearless type also but Palin “outdoes” him when it comes to her “charisma”/outward passion, etc. plus….she’s a woman & think would get the women’s votes, even if they weren’t Repubs. – the ones who have had it with liberals.
Love Bachmann & really wonder about her running along w/Palin. Palin has the executive experience and proof that she’ll stand up to whoever it takes, even her own party – to bring about any needed “restoration”. Also — check out what CAIN has said about how he WOULD appoint Muslims to his cabinet, after saying he wouldn’t — http://www.debbieschlussel.com/37679/fraud-herman-cain-does-180-on-islam-would-appoint-muslims-to-cabinet/
