Fair? Bachmann Ridiculed For Cracking God and Natural Disaster Joke

The media is having a field day mocking conservatives for referencing God during discussions about Hurricane Irene. We’ve already shown you how they roasted Glenn Beck, unfairly, for his comments about how Irene could turn out to be a blessing from God for it’s lesson about preparedness. Now, the media is setting its sights on Michele Bachmann for cracking a joke involving God’s hand in natural disasters.

“I don’t know how much God has to do to get the attention of the politicians,” she told the crowd at a rally in Florida over the weekend. “We’ve had an earthquake; we’ve had a hurricane. He said, ‘Are you going to start listening to me here?’ Listen to the American people because the American people are roaring right now. They know government is on a morbid obesity diet and we’ve got to rein in the spending.”

Mediaite has the video:

Politico has a different video, which appears to show Bachmann cracking the joke during another stop:

As an aside, it should be noted the media is paying no attention to a Detroit Free Press columnist who said Martin Luther King, Jr. sent the hurricane because of racism.

When asked to clarify, Bachmann’s campaign quickly pointed out the phrase was a joke. And it’s worth noting that many people chuckled after she made the original comments.

Robert Schlesinger at U.S. News and World Report, however, isn’t amused. He unleashes on her in a blog post:

Because, you know, any clear-minded politician would immediately assume that Hurricane Irene was (a) a message from God and (b) one specifically connected to government spending. Seriously. What kind of overweening hubris does it take to presume to be God’s spokeswoman on Earth, to the point of assuming that He has a specifically partisan (not to mention pedestrian) political agenda? [See photos of Bachmann.]

Of course, as Think Progress points out, it would be an awfully strange way for God to send a message about  government spending considering disaster relief only figures to cost the government more money.

But the fact that the statement is so ridiculous in Schlesinger’s eyes may confirm how much of a joke it is. Isn’t it “funny” precisely because it’s hyperbolic?

Is the joke, then, really on the media?

Almost as bad as Think Progress claiming that the droughts, and tornadoes that killed 250 people in the midwest were ‘Mother Nature’s punishment for man-made climate change deniers’

Well, is it more Presidential to attribute disasters to God,or to Nature. Many theologians stay away from attributing daily events to God’s will (instead of, “stuff that happens on God’s green earth.”)

For example, should President Obama use, “God Did It” as an excuse for having a tough slog? Or should he be responsible and accountable for whatever happens?

That‘s because ’Mother Nature’ is a natural system reacting to man made changes such as the burning of fossil fuel or mountaintop mining. Michelle Bachman and Glenn Beck think that there is a supernatural reason behind natural occurrences. That is the difference. It‘s one of the reasons the rest of the media and the public at large don’t take them seriously.

Bottom line is she has trouble enough with most of what she says for herself not being a complete joke. Really don’t think she should be speaking on behalf of a higher power. “If God wanted us to vote he would give us candidates, not individuals who are the joke”

@GETLIFE The basic problem is when she stops saying exaggerated versions of what she thinks people want to hear, what will she actually do. She asked for more than her share of earmarks and falls woefully short on substance and details. But hey it’s all about the sound bites. Notwithstanding I am from the East so are cynical by nature, I have no doubt part of her funding is investment money for her Palin business model. She will run for a while, get some national attention and then write a few books that will be bought by the million or so people who liked her. Palin has shown it is a solid business model and you don’t actually have to do anything or take any responsibility.

If that is your argument, then who made god? Every time we make a discovery, there is never a supernatural explanation for it.

@FoxholeAtheist @GETLIFE Ok beyond the semi superficial points you both made is the reality that most thinking people actually reside. That is that there is some form of higher power in the universe. On which humans have no clue about and probably are incapable of understanding. The notion that a book written by ancient tribes provides some insight is just silly. The notion that the higher power remotely resembles the judeo christian framework is way to simple. If science provides us anything it is that we don‘t even know what we don’t know, even though it is volumes more than the ancient tribes knew. I would always bet on some kind of alien visitation before I would accept the bible, koran, torah, etc. as providing any real insight as to the broader questions. But it is important to have a spiritual aspect to our lives and the traditions are nice. I mean who doesn’t like Christmas??

That is a very simplified way to put it, but yes. That is the most possible explanation. If you want to go back farther, then you are talking about the big bang.

Humans are not separate from nature. We are a part of nature and have evolved to become a very powerful force within the system. The question is not whether climate change is happening. The question is, can we say that we have made enough of a change on our own to have impacted it unfavorably. The answer is yes.

A common ancestor of the great apes and the humans we believe to be O. macedoniensis.

Why is what created god a stupid question? Nothing can’t come from nothing. You can’t say that and then turn around and say it came from something that was already there. Something had to have made the something that made everything.

The Big Bang Theory is the best we have. Background radiation and the expansion of the universe, among other things, seem to back it up.

Sorry, I was trying to simplify things for you and I got ahead of myself. Here, maybe you can comprehend this a little easier: Amino building blocks in gaseous atmosphere+slime soup = single cell organism.

In my opinion we have let a few take God away. If a few people want a nativity scene taken away then it is done even if the majority wants it, if a few want Merry Christmas done away with then it is done. I am offended by rap music but they don’t take that away, I am offended by skulls and cross bones ( I know this is crazy but it represents evil to me), they don’t take it away. There are alot of things I am offended by but I don’t go make a big stink. Again I believe GOD is giving us a warning and we better wake up.

The remark was delivered with humor but does anyone doubt she and Glenn are serious that these natural disasters are a “sign from God?” That‘s mankind’s oldest hobby, trying to figure out what God is trying to tell us when natural disaster occur.

But I‘m here to say that she’s correct. God is sending a message, and it’s not that we need smaller government. He’s saying to stop polluting the Earth.

King David was punished by God for taking a census.
you can assign any reason for any natural disaster as an act of God but my question is: what are the consequences we face for prostituting the constitution and allowing an ineligible person (barry soetoro) to usurp the presidency? that kind of thing destroys from the inside out…….you don’t realize it until it is usually too late. the lame excuse that by ignoring his ineligibility to avoid a major social upheaval and possibly preserving the union is cowardly and we all know where cowardice leads…….defeat.

Fair? Of course not! Who cares?

Believers see the writing on the wall, unbelievers scoff. What difference does it make? We will all die eventually then we will all have some serious ‘splainin’ to do. Those that scoffed have sealed their fate. Those that believed will be rewarded. What else matters?

When liberals speak its the absolute truth and nothing else matters.
When Conservatives talk its complete and total blasphemy and should be silenced.

Make it clear. Do not confuse any Person as God. God is ONE. I listen, investigate and find if Facts exist in the words of people. Glenn Beck, Michelle Bachman and all others are like us, Human. My favct finding has brought me the Truth in we are being lied to and lead down the wrong path by many. I cannot deny God, as rough a upbringing as I have had and as much as I looked for ways to dis him. I cannot. I attend NO CHURCH or Religious Group and never will. I look for people around where ever I am taken who I see actually are hurting and need help. I help them without being known. Never give to any organization or person who you think will use your gift correctly. Do it yourself and know where your money is Really Going. I subscribe to Glenn. I probably always will. But I also know he is getting to GIVE ME and I’ll help people. While slowly taking away from the Glenn I fully admired in saying help each other on your own. Power get’s everyone. Don’t ever be fooled into thinking there is exemptions. I Pray for Everyone. Friend or Foe, Believer or Non-Believer. You have the Right to be what you are. Do not let the words of people to take that from you.

But it is okay for a reporter to say that Martin Luther King sent the hurricane because he wasn’t happy about what is happening on earth. This is okay as long as God is left out of the equation. Again the Kenites are working over time. The fake christ will have 5 months on earth defacto before the true Christ returns. So the Kenites have to get all the nasty work done that they can to prepare for the fakes’ arrival. Do you ever wonder why people without the living God in their hearts and foreheads are so nasty and unhappy? They are never satisfied until they make everyone as miserable as they are. Keep passing laws and regulations until the people can’t joke or smile any more!

Pretty soon none will be able to deny the calamities to come. All the nations will be perplexed by the things coming upon the earth. Mocking is a form of denying God, so just remember everytime you do it your making your stand against his divinity and thus sentencing yourself to be cut off from him in the end.
