Bachmann Shocks S.C. Crowd: Reveals She Had a ‘Devastating’ Miscarriage

Republican presidential candidate Michele Bachmann shocked a crowd during a campaign stop in South Carolina Wednesday when she revealed she once suffered a “devastating” miscarriage. It’s an event, she said, that shaped her stance on abortion.
“After our second child was born, we became pregnant with a third baby,” she told the hundreds gathered at Winthrop University. “And it was an unexpected baby, but of course we were delighted to have this child. And the child was coming along, and we ended up losing that child. And it was devastating for both of us, as you can imagine if any of you have lost a child.”
“And at that moment we didn’t think of ourselves as overly career minded or overly materialistic,” she said. “When we lost that child, it changed us. And it changed us forever.”
According to her, the unfortunate incident affirmed her and her husband’s pro-life views.
“So we made a commitment that no matter how many children were brought into our life, we’d receive them because we’re committed to life,” she said. “And we didn’t know at that time we’d be foster parents, and that one day we’d be parents of 28 children, but we are extremely grateful for that opportunity because you can get money wrong, but you can’t get life wrong. And I am committed to life.”
Politico reports the admission, which she delivered while retaining her composure, is a “first” in presidential politics and speaks to a quality that endears Bachmann to many: “authenticity.”
As ABC notes, Bachmann was once a Democrat who volunteered on Jimmy Carter’s campaign. Still, her camp says she’s always been pro-life. And she made that stance clear on Thursday, not only through the touching story, but also through an unequivocal statement.
“This is an easy one,” she in regards to abortion. “I am 100% pro-life, from conception until natural death.”

Posted on June 30, 2011 at 10:19pmI feel for her. But I‘m hearing some sense in Encinom’s comment too. I don’t know too much about Michelle Bachman, but this revelation has very little to do with whether I’d vote for her or not.
And part of me always thinks back to how Biden teared up in that one VP debate about his wife’s car accident. It was a disgusting thing he did, using that as a tool to elicit a certain emotional reaction from the audience.
That said, I don’t think Michelle Bachman did that here! I just hesitate to judge people based on painful things they’ve dealt with in their lives. I think HOW they dealt with them is certainly relevant. That tells you something about them- like Mrs. Bachman stating that‘s partly why she’s pro-life.
It’s just…I don’t like it when someone says “I’m voting for you!!” based on this kind of story. It tells you nothing about her political views, ne? A little more research, a little more…conservative, measured approach in choosing a candidate would be good.
On the Ron Paul debate: I’m sorry, but the guy is a complete flake on certain issues. He’s as disconnected from reality as Obama is in some ways. I don‘t know why people say he’s more “real”. He’s really good at making very, very poor analogies, that’s for sure. Sorry, not a supporter.

Posted on June 30, 2011 at 12:36pmAUTHENTICITY Its what catapulted Palin and it is doing the same for Michele.
EMPATHY She worked on the Carter campaign (as a young person) but has matured into a disciplined conservative.
EXPERIENCE The babies, the fosterkids, the miscarriage. She has walked the walk (like Palin).
ATHENTICITY During these days post Obama (“You lie”) and post Weiner (“I lied”) America has a NEW HOPE for HONESTY and this is the election to demand it.

Romney has not swung at anyone but Obama.

Yes, she did. While I certainly understand your sentiment; for me this one negative outweighs any of her positives. We don’t need another Bush or Obama. I hate sounding like a nut(which is unfair) saying this but Ron Paul seems like the best to me. West voted for the Patriot Act extension and will continue to do so. Cain is a former Federal Reserve chairman and the Fed Res must end.

Consciously or unconsciously, Michele has wrapped up the miscarriage devastation vote, bigger than the Down’s syndrome bravery vote. Now the Palin team, 2012 candidates and the President will have to scramble to reveal enough private information to attract personal empathy voters! This changes everything! Let’s make 2012 a personal election of personable people!

Posted on June 30, 2011 at 2:06pmMany women think differently about abortion after losing a child. I was always against it, but it changed my perspective too, to also think of those who have abortions because they are scared or think they can’t afford another baby after they discover they are pregnant. We lost 3 babies that I later found out that 2 of them was from a genetic flaw that causes such things. One of the little girls lived a day and a half. I prayed and trusted wanting God to help her live. I still got mad at him, but she died. She would not have had a good life. Thank God I still had a son after almost losing him at 3 mo., my doctor got me through that rough period. I believe her.

Posted on June 30, 2011 at 2:38pmGreat human interest. Great play in the bible belt. Great message to the conservative christian right. Once again, very lacking in substance regarding issues facing the nation. Abortion is not a major issue facing the nation, unless of course you support limiting individual civil rights.

Human beings are inherently inauthentic – We all have things we’d prefer were not widely known – friends we’ve let down, times we haven’t kept our word… or worse… but those who can publicly admit they’ve had some failures and who get back in the game because the game they’re committed to playing is bigger than any personal failure they’ve had – these are the people who inspire us all to be better and work harder.
Authenticity and honesty go hand in hand – so what is the difference? If you’re not sure what “authenticity” really means, try this definition on: ‘The only time you’re being TRULY authentic is when you’re being authentic about your inauthenticity’. It’s in that willingness to admit personal shortcomings that we are telling others that we can be trusted to hold ourselves personally responsible – and isn’t that what we need more of from our political representatives?

Which citizen’s rights are more important? Which “right” keeps a human being alive most of the time, and which one guarantees a human being dies every time?

Posted on June 30, 2011 at 5:21pm@Jaycen I’d say the answer is a timing one based on Roe v. Wade. The Supreme Court who arbitrates civil rights issues already decided the issue. Time to move on. So within the first trimester the mother of course …. everyone else should keep their personal beliefs and opinions on the issue to themselves.

Ron Paul is all for throwing Israel under the bus. “”"
Ron Paul may actually stand a better chance than you think, the American people are waking up to the fact that the establishment choice (on both sides) is no choice at all
no he isn’t (for throwing Israel…) listen to what he really says, he is for ending aid TO ALL FOREIGN COUNTRY’s not just Israel, and as far as i know he hasn’t said anything about abandoning ANY of our allies. don’t be so quick to swallow the establishment line about Ron Paul, both the left and the right have much to loose if his ideas about limited government become popular.. watch and you will see both sides try to discredit what he stands for…

I seriously doubt you could find any candidate that didn’t have some family member that received money from a federal program. This would only make her a hypocrite if she specifically pushed to institute a federal program so that she and her extended family could benefit. There are doctors all over the place that don’t like medicare/medicaid and want it gone, but take the money when it’s what their patients rely on. We need to get people off the government dole and looking for ways to support themselves and all of the GOP candidates seem to know that.
Nobody needs to apologize to you.
