Minnesota Congresswoman and Republican Candidate for President Rep. Michele Bachmann appeared on “The Tonight Show with Jay Leno,” Friday. The late night host apologized for the occasional jokes made at her expense in the past, like all politicians, but skipped the pleasantries after that. Commentators have written that Leno “grilled,” pressed, and showed a “sharp edge” to Bachmann, when questioning the candidate on her positions in regards to gay marriage, the HPV vaccine, and the Tea Party’s “conviction” during the debt-ceiling debate.
News Busters Noel Sheppard describes the interview;
“Rather than the light, humorous banter politicians normally get when on late night comedy programs, the Republican presidential candidate was interrogated for four minutes about the Texas HPV vaccine issue.”
The portion of the interview described by Sheppard was condensed in this clip from the Media Research Center:
Leno also questioned Bachmann on the center run by her and husband, asserting his view: “That whole ‘pray the gay away’ thing, I don’t get that.“ After Bachmann tried to deflect the question by jokingly comparing the phrase to ”a mid-life crisis thing, ‘prayer raises grey’,” Leno continued press the issue.
“To me, when I was a kid, they used to try and teach me to write right-handed … to me that‘s the same thing if you’re gay. I’ve been married 31 years, first wife, very happy. Two gay guys get married, how does that affect my marriage?”
Bachmann’s full interview on The Tonight Show can be scene at NBC.com.
Do you think Leno ambushed Bachmann during what was supposed to be a friendly interview? Or simply made conversion by having the candidate explain her side to criticisms she has received from primary candidates and liberal pundits?

Posted on September 18, 2011 at 12:03pmI don’t think Michelle handled these issues well at all. She has an opportunity to bring the issue back to principles and punted. These are issues that she needs to address thoughtfully and with conviction. The issue with gay marriage Jay states wrongly “Gay marriage doesn’t effect my marriage” That is a red herring and needs to be challenged. It’s not about “his” marriage, it is about what is best for society as a whole. It is proven over and over that strong marriages between a man & woman create stronger communities, healthier children, more prosperity within society. You simply just need to look and the black community with its 75%+ out of wedlock birth rate to validate this. Those children suffer financially, educationally, emotionally.
With the HPV issue she again punted although tried to address the main issue but did so poorly. The issue is not about the vaccine itself but the horrible overreach of those in power. Perry used his authority to do what he wanted with total disregard for the elected representatives of the citizens of his state. Now he wants to be President. Haven’t we had enough of that type of “leadership”?

Posted on September 18, 2011 at 2:08pmWell Jay, let me see if I can enlighten you, Marriage was founded in religion, and it has always been between a man and a woman, period, it is a religious ceremony between a man and a woman, this is ALL religions. Now if the gay’s wanted equal rights, they could change the domestic partnership laws to equal the marriage rights, problem solved ! BUT that is not what the gay groups want, they want to redefine the word marriage to fit to their lifestyle, and God will never honor it

I agree 100% and I’m a fan of Bachman. I think she is right on with her positions but was very disappointed with her responses to Leno. I don’t know if she was nervous, out of her element or what but she wasn’t at her best for sure. She completely missed the ball on the HPV vaccine issue, the bigger issue is that Perrys campaign manager worked for Merck, who stood to make a lot of $ with forcing this immunization on children. It’s the issue of inflicting laws on the people your supposed to represent in order to benefit friends and political donors. Also on the gay marriage, when he asked why is the Tea Party concerned with this she should have quite simply said “they’re not”. She could explain why SHE is against gay marriage, which she attempted to weakly, but should have reinforced the fact that the Tea Party is about fiscal responsibility and not social issues.

@just-sayin,
To infringe on someone‘s individual rights because it’s best for society as a whole is a progressive mindset. Just because you look to God to justify your actions instead of the state does not change that fact. Government has no business doing anything, including defining marriage, that falls outside its one and only mandate of protecting individual rights.

Posted on September 18, 2011 at 7:59pm@j JUST SAYIN.. You are right.. how can we teach children to lead happy productive healthy lives if we legalize gay unions.Marriage was created by God for one man and one woman and is to be a model for our covenant relationship with Him. I makes perfect sense.. and to grant that to ones acting in abomination to Him is not even possible.That would be a mockery. I appreciate that bachman is not for shoving anything down our throats..remember Obamacare? He didn’t give one whit about “we tthe people” As for HPV.. I’d like to know the stats of how many come down with cancer. I knew of one.. but she said that there are hundreds of strains…how convenient. Here is a link if you want to check the candidates and their issues.

Michelle’s problem was that she should have made the case that Perry was over-stepping his authority by trying to force citizens to partake in something that he should have kept out of. She could have stuck to the fact that no matter how well intensioned, that Gov. has to stay out of decisions of private citizens. She could have built that case based on Perry’s record.

She has rolled out a host of half truthes and outright lies about Perry’s “HPV” issue. Example: Perry did NOT admit that his Executive Order was “an abuse of power,” as Bachman said to Leno. Perry admitted he should have done it through the Texas Legislature, but he did NOT say it was an abuse of power.
Bachman will get no money and no support or respect from me. She has shown to be dishonest.

While living in SF in 66-68 one of the many issues we hippys discussed was the plight of the homosexual, or so we were told. Being a stupid, liberal kid, I thought they were right, after all, if 2 men want to play hide the salami? why should I care. As long as they’re discreet, they should be able to do what they want, right? Well, little did we know what was in store for the future. Posted on September 18, 2011 at 12:04amBachmann loves to accuse Perry of this donation from a former staffer, but really did she just compare it to Obama’s thing. Murk has given Perry campaign money, along with others, and they may have even got some good treatment for it (i doubt it) but think about this, when Obama had his favorite, he gave the company 500 million dollars, Perry got 29,000 from these people over 7 years, and he maid a law that would have helped save lives, Obama’s did nothing but cost tax payers money. Bachmann has become the attack dog for the left, and her and Romney should keep it to the issue, and not give the liberals a sound bite to use against our candidate. If Bachmann is not smart enough to at least have this lady researched when she makes a claim, do we need her making choices about our foreign policy. The polls may not show it now, but Romney has no chance to beat Obama, for this reason. When Karl Rove got Bush reelected, he did it when Bush was lagging in the polls. The reason was because Rove was able to tell the country that John Kerry was not to be trusted, because he has changed his position so many times. Romney is the same way, he has had so many position that the liberals will rightly claim that we cannot trust Romney. Perry will not have this problem. He admits he was wrong on an issue (Reagan like) and sticks to his positions whether the establishment says he shouldn’t (Reagan like) and he is a tough guy who will not take the bs from the left (Reagan like).

Posted on September 17, 2011 at 11:32pmGiven the odd venue, I guess it‘s no surprise that Michelle Bachmann didn’t waste her time trying to point out that the phrase “gay marriage” contains about as much logic as “hot snow”.
There were, after all, many valid reasons Jesus mostly remained silent when forcibly dragged into the presence of various political and religious authorities–the bulk of whom no doubt would have understood His words about as well as I would understand spoken Mandarin Chinese.
Marriage at the time of America’s founding belonged exclusively to the churches, and to the people. It was an institution which aroused no so-called “controversy” because not even the most rabid non-Christian would have tried to argue that it was anything other than what it was, and had always been all throughout the history of Western civilization: the life-long union of a man and a woman.
We Americans live today in a culture which is both UNintellectual and ANTI-intellectual. The long-established purpose of education–which was the impartation of learned truth (“truth” in an objective sense, rather than today’s spoiled-brat “I am God!! and make my OWN “truth” solely for MYSELF)–has long since been discarded in favor of drilling government-approved propaganda into the minds of children too ignorant to understand what is being done to them. As shown, in one of many ways, by the fact that younger people (below age 25, in particular) are so universally enthusiastic and supportive of the oxymoronic

Posted on September 17, 2011 at 11:03pmWould like to see them impromptu, unscripted. Leno couldn’t stand without a bank of writers and prompts. Michele, however, needs to get the difference between “quid pro quo”, and “crony capitalism”correct. The Implications here would be a crime on Perry’s part. PLEASE stop devouring one another, and focus on “Buffoon”.

Posted on September 17, 2011 at 11:00pmSaw his chance to look like a serious news commentator for the pop crowd. Republicans had better set rules of engagement up in advance if they are going to subject themselves to lib interrogation. They have no friends in the lamestream media period.

Posted on September 17, 2011 at 11:43pmLeno used the softball questions on Obama … Really his bias is showing BIG TIME! I no longer watch him or Letterman … why watch people who are so out of touch.

SERIOUSLY? Funny, but I never see OBAMA on FOX NEWS answering any REAL questions. Michelle Bachmann went on a LIBERAL talk show without fear and he did FOCUS ON THOSE TWO things but she handled it very well! So… who is actually afraid of the LOBS here? OBAMA.
