‘Backdoor Kyoto Protocol’: Sen. DeMint Warns of Hidden Threat to American Sovereignty

Sen. Jim DeMint (R-SC) warned on Tuesday that the Obama administration is working quietly with the United Nations to ratify the Law of the Sea Treaty (LOST), an international agreement that would force the U.S. to abide by foreign climate regulations.
Not familiar with the Law of the Sea? Here’s a brief refresher:
LOST is like a lot of leftist initiatives in that it’s been decades in the making and that it uses “environmentalism” as a means of achieving its goals.
“Although the treaty is meant to establish a set of rules regarding the oceans, only a few pages of it deal with purely navigational concerns,” longtime LOST opponent Sen. DeMint notes.
“The bulk of the 288-page treaty does things like establish a new international bureaucracy in Jamaica to collect and redistribute royalties on offshore oil drilling and force the United States into international arbitration for environmental disputes,” he adds.
If ratified, LOST would compel states to “adopt laws and regulations” to “implement applicable international rules and standards established through competent international organizations or diplomatic conference to prevent, reduce and control pollution of the marine environment from land-based sources.”
The Senate Committee on Foreign Relations discusses LOST (May 23, 2012):
Translation: The U.S. would be forced to obey U.N. standards on air pollution and carbon emissions. In fact, the treaty even allows foreign nations to sue the U.S. if it doesn’t adhere to LOST guidelines.
“LOST dictates that disputes, environmental or otherwise, be settled by a five-member arbitration panel,” Sen. DeMint writes.
“That panel would be made up of two representatives each from the parties involved in the dispute and one deciding vote. If the two parties cannot agree on the critical fifth arbiter, the deciding vote would be appointed by the U.N. secretary-general,” he adds.
So, yes, as Sen. DeMint puts it, LOST acts as a “backdoor Kyoto Protocol.”
Unsurprisingly, most Americans are opposed to the idea of handing this much authority over to the U.N. In fact, Americans have been opposed the treaty as far back as 1978 when former President Ronald Reagan said that “no nat[ional] interest of ours could justify handing sovereign control of two-thirds of the Earth’s surface over to the Third World.”
So, in order to deal with this opposition, LOST advocates started something called The American Sovereignty Campaign (TASC) to convince people that the treaty is totally patriotic.
“The need for Law of the Sea Treaty ratification has grown more urgent with time and current U.S. economic and security interests make immediate ratification imperative,” TASC’s website reads.

Ratification would protect or guarantee:
- America’s legitimate claims to vast areas of the Arctic, which, absent U.S. ratification, can be encroached upon by other nations. Russia has already submitted a claim for almost half of the Arctic, and Canada intends to put forth a large claim, parts of which could encroach upon America’s exclusive economic zone recognized under the Treaty.
- Unfettered ability to lay and maintain undersea communications cables that keep America connected across the globe.
- American rights of passage, navigation and safety along critical maritime transit routes, including through the South China Sea and the Strait of Hormuz.
- Access to economically important minerals, including rare earth minerals widely used in medical equipment, modern technology – such as smart phones, flat screen TVs and electric vehicles – and U.S. defense systems.
However, as noted by Sen. DeMint’s staff, the TASC website fails to underscore its main goal: “protecting the environment.”
“If LOST should be passed for environmental reasons, supporters should make that case. But, it raises suspicion when that case is not consistently made and so drastically altered for different audiences,” the site points out.
Luckily, the South Carolina senator is not alone in his opposition to LOST: 27 Republican senators have joined with him in his fight against the U.N. initiative.
But that’s not to say that the possibility of the treaty being ratified isn’t great.
“LOST is just the latest part of the White House’s relentless push to regulate America’s energy emissions,” the senator writes.
“The Senate has already provided its consent to the Obama administration for one misguided treaty with New START last year. Republicans must not let that mistake be repeated again in the upcoming lame duck,” he adds.

Everyone should read this complaint, if for no other reason the fact that The Blaze has been blocking it, as this is going to possibly change how we do elections going forward. If the judge rules in favor of the plaintiffs, and I do not see how he/she could not, it will unbind all delegates in the first round of votes in Tampa. It will also give us a chance to actually see the election fraud and vote tampering the GOP has been doing. Anthropological Global Warming (AGW) is junk science. Our planet had CO2 levels 10x higher than today, and during those periods, temperatures 1 degree cooler (see paleoclimatology, around 450million years ago). AGW is big science funded by governments, which has a lot of hubris and grows unchecked. Those lefties who get really romantic about the notion of living in tents as a hunter gather society with no industrialization view AGW as proof positive that technological advancement is evil, and man is a blight on the planet. Combine these fruitcakes with a big science block that has snowed the average person on AGW, and you have a climate in which politicians see it as advantageous to pander to AGW.

The Blaze has blocked every other attempt. This is going to change the way elections are done in the future. This will have far reaching effects on all of us and you will not hear about it on any of the media outlets. This lawsuit is going to show all of us the election fraud that has been done by the RNC and state GOP establishment. Posted on June 13, 2012 at 6:09pmRomney and Obama are both talking about wars in Iran, Syria, Libya, and continuing in Afghanistan. Romney when asked in a debate about drone bombings said he would attack no matter of the sovereignty of the nation.
So basically he wants to continue the same policies of the presidents before him. The ones that have us bankrupt.
Lets not forget Romney’s budget doesnt cut current spending levels. This action alone is going to send us to bankruptcy. After the collapse, the riots, rapes, and murders American citizens will give away the rest of their rights for a savior. That savior will be in the form of a global government.
I am guessing you like bills like the Patriot Act and the NDAA? You like the Constitution being trampled for your own safety? Well I will leave you with a quote from a man much smarter than you or I.

Romney hasn’t given any indication he will make any major foreign policy changes of any kind. There has been the usual conservative rhetoric “strong national defense, etc” but no specifics regarding the UN or major shift in the middle east.
Sorry friend, but I think things are going to be pretty much like they have been for the past four administrations. Too much intervention, debt, foreign aid and cowtowing to global interests. He’s not even planning to deport the illegals or make major budgetary changes.

Posted on June 13, 2012 at 9:30pmI read an article where Romney opposed this treaty two years ago. He needs to go on the record again and clearly state his opposition. Impersonally think this would be a great campaign issue that will awaken independents and conservative democrats who are opposed to losing sovereignty to the UN. The media needs to bring this to the forefront. I think Obama and Hilary will sneak this through while everyone is focused on the leaks.
