Backlash After Komen Cancer Charity Cuts Grants to Planned Parenthood, 26 Senators Call for Reversal

NEW YORK (The Blaze/AP) — Susan G. Komen for the Cure, the renowned breast-cancer charity, faced an escalating backlash Thursday over its decision to cut breast-screening grants to Planned Parenthood. Some of Komen’s local affiliates are openly upset, and at least one top official has quit, reportedly in protest.
Meanwhile, Komen has been deluged with negative emails and Facebook postings, accusing it of knuckling under to pressure from anti-abortion groups, since The Associated Press reported on Tuesday that it was halting grants that Planned Parenthood affiliates used for breast exams and related services. The grants totaled $680,000 last year.
Planned Parenthood has been heartened by an outpouring of support in response to the cutoff. In addition to $400,000 in smaller donations from 6,000 people, it is receiving $250,000 from a family foundation in Dallas and a $250,000 pledge announced Thursday by New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg to match future donations.
In Washington, 26 U.S. senators – all Democrats except for independent Bernie Sanders of Vermont – signed a letter calling on Komen to reconsider its decision.
“It would be tragic if any woman – let alone thousands of women – lost access to these potentially lifesaving screenings because of a politically motivated attack,” the senators wrote.
The Washington Post provides the letter to Komen’s Nancy Brinker:
Dear Ambassador Brinker,
We write to express our disappointment with Susan G. Komen for the Cure’s decision to cut
funding for breast cancer prevention, screening, and education at Planned Parenthood health centers. This troubling decision threatens to reduce access to necessary, life-saving services. We urge Komen to reconsider its decision.
Planned Parenthood is a trusted provider of health care for women and men. More than 90 percent of the services provided by Planned Parenthood are primary and preventative including wellness exams and cancers screenings that save lives. Each year, Planned Parenthood health clinics provide 750,000 breast exams, 770,000 pap tests and nearly 4 million tests and treatments for sexually transmitted diseases. Twenty percent of all women in the U.S. have visited a Planned Parenthood health center.
For the past five years, grants to local affiliates of Planned Parenthood have been an important part of Planned Parenthood’s work to protect women from breast cancer. Komen funding for Planned Parenthood has provided nearly 170,000 clinical breast exams and resulted in 6,400 referrals for mammograms. In 2011 alone, grants from Komen provided Planned Parenthood with roughly $650,000 in funding for breast cancer prevention, screening, and education. According to a recent statement by Komen, “In some areas of the U.S., our affiliates have determined a Planned Parenthood clinic to be the best or only local place where women can receive breast health care.”
It would be tragic if any woman —let alone thousands of women — lost access to these potentially life-saving screenings because of a politically motivated attack.
We earnestly hope that you will put women’s health before partisan politics and reconsider this decision for the sake of the women who depend on both your organizations for access to the health care they need.
The letter is signed by Senators Lautenberg, Murray, Mikulski, Boxer, Cantwell, Gillibrand, Menendez, Wyden, Blumenthal, Shaheen, Begich, merkley, Tester, Akaka, Sanders, (Sherrod) Brown, Leahy, Baucus, Cardin, Feinstein, Franken, and Kerry.
Below, Brinker speaks about the rift:
Komen’s top leaders, in their first news conference since the controversy erupted, denied Planned Parenthood’s assertion that the decision was driven by pressure from anti-abortion groups.
“We don’t base our decisions on whether one side or the other will be pleased,” said Komen’s founder and CEO, Nancy Brinker.
Komen has said the decision stemmed from newly adopted criteria barring grants to organizations under investigation – affecting Planned Parenthood because of an inquiry by a Republican congressman acting with encouragement from anti-abortion activists.
Brinker said Thursday that there were additional factors, notably changes in the types of breast-health service providers it wanted to support. However, she said grants would continue this year to three of the 19 Planned Parenthood affiliates – in Denver, California’s Orange County, and Waco, Texas – because they served clientele with few other breast-screening options.
A source with direct knowledge of decision-making at Komen’s headquarters in Dallas gave a different account, saying the grant-making criteria were adopted with the deliberate intention of targeting Planned Parenthood. The criteria’s impact on Planned Parenthood, and its status as the focus of government investigations, were highlighted in a memo distributed to Komen affiliates in December.
According to the source, who spoke on condition of anonymity for fear of repercussions, a driving force behind the move was Karen Handel, who was hired by Komen last year as vice president for public policy after losing a campaign for governor in Georgia in which she stressed her anti-abortion views and frequently denounced Planned Parenthood.
Brinker, in an interview with MSNBC, said Handel didn’t have a significant role in the policy change.
The source also said that Mollie Williams, who had been Komen’s director of community health programs, had resigned in protest over the grant cutoff.
Williams, in an email, said she could not comment on her departure for reasons of professional confidentiality, but she was clear about her views.
“I have dedicated my career to fighting for the rights of the marginalized and underserved,” she wrote. “And I believe it would be a mistake for any organization to bow to political pressure and compromise its mission.”
Williams said she was saddened by the rift because she admired both Komen and Planned Parenthood.
“I am hopeful their passionate and courageous leaders, Nancy Brinker and Cecile Richards, can swiftly resolve this conflict in a manner that benefits the women they both serve.”
Earlier in the day, Fox News’ Megyn Kelly hosted a debate on the topic:
Among Komen’s affiliates, there were clear signs of discomfort with the decision. The Connecticut branch received scores of supportive emails after expressing frustration about the cutoffs and good will toward Planned Parenthood.
The board of the Arkansas affiliate issued a statement noting that the decision was made at Komen headquarters “without input from affiliates,” and called for the new policy to be changed.
“We hope Komen national will reverse its position on granting to organizations under investigation because we feel decisions of this nature should be made only after the investigation is complete,” the statement said.
At the Orange County affiliate in Costa Mesa, Calif., executive director Lisa Wolter said there have been lots of exchanges with headquarters.
“We’re very troubled by the reaction, and we want to make sure there are clarifications,” she said.
The American Association of University Women, in protest over Komen’s decision, said it was scrapping plans to offer a Komen Race for the Cure as one of the activities at its upcoming National Conference for College Women Student Leaders.
“AAUW is disappointed that some are playing politics with women’s health and jeopardizing care for the most vulnerable among us,” said Lisa Maatz, the association’s director of public policy.
Though comments posted on Komen’s Facebook page seemed to be mostly critical of the grant decision, Brinker said donations to the charity had increased since Tuesday.

The breast exams can be done in health clinics or Doctor’s office, where they actually should be done. This is smart on Komen’s part. Donations decreased when people found out about the relationship with Planned Parenthood.

Shame on you. Your support to fight cancer is based solely on the apparent political actions of a group? You’re the worst.
All in all, this may turn out better for both of them in the short-run. From the article, PP has already received more in donations than Komen gave in grants all year. And many pro-life groups will now support Komen. Although my criticism to them is the same as that to Monicne. Shame on you that you only support charities that seek to help EVERYONE if they seem to uphold your political persuasion.
As a man in a family of women who have battled breast and ovarian cancer, I’ve donated every year since I started working. Cancer doesn’t care about liberal or conservative. It doesn’t care about pro-life or pro-choice. It can affect and kill anyone. Give today so your mother, sister, or daughter can LIVE tomorrow.

That’s the great thing about charity. There’s such a wide variety of organizations that a person can easily find one that matches his/her ideals. Don’t want to affiliate with a breast cancer researcher that partners with abortion clinics? Donate to one that doesn’t.
That being said, this charity made the right decision. Any funding given to Planned Parenthood inevitably goes to support abortion in one way or another. Considering local health clinics and local Dr’s offices have a much greater penetration in communities than Planned Parenthood, it makes you wonder why they were giving money to PP in the first place.

Posted on February 3, 2012 at 1:33amI must agree. Why do the lefties have their panties in a wad over a charity not giving to any organization, for whatever reason? Because they are the ones politicizing it. PP is evil incarnate and has been since it’s inception. Founded by Margaret Sanger, PP has been for the extermination of blacks and others who aren’t among the elite. More recently, PP has made it their mission to allow adults sexual access to children with no ramifications.
Report Post »I have never supported Komen, primarily because of their support for PP. I also think, and this will tick off a lot of people, that breast cancer is the most over hyped disease on the planet. I have nothing but sympathy for anyone who has had to endure BC, and the families of those who have suffered, but it is only one form of this dread disease. My mother was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer and was dead within 6 months. There was virtually nothing that could be done for her. Pancreatic cancer is possibly the most ignored type of cancer. If I’m not mistaken, it gets the least amount of attention, money and research. BC, on the other hand, is virtually all you ever hear about. Pink everything, including football uniforms. Ug. 80,000 different products and events designed “to increase BC awareness.” Cut me a break. Do you know a single person who isn’t aware of BC? It may sound cold, but the only reason breast cancer is so hyped is that it primarily affects women who have somehow become a victimized minority with a great lobby.

Let’s speculate. His mother was white, and he was raised by whites. He attended Harvard and became president of the United States. I think she’d approve. But you never know.
We know what Sanger would think of Reverend Carlton Veazey, president and CEO of a group once known as the Religious Coalition for Abortion Rights, now disguised as the Religious Coalition for Reproductive Choice. “I support Planned Parenthood 100 percent,” he said.

While the Pro choice and Pro life fight on,The women in the real world languish.Don’t worry about us you never have. Not to worry though most of us have had quite enough of it all. When we come out of our foxholes though you might want to run.The anger that will be unleashed is gonna be enornous.

Personhood USA, the group that drafted the pledge, sent Paul an open letter that expressed “serious concerns both about the internal inconsistencies within Rep. Posted on February 2, 2012 at 7:14pmCharity organizations are at the mercy of those that wish to “donate” to their cause. Money comes in when people believe in the cause and trust the organization to do what they said they would with the money. Government organizations use regulations and laws to force people to pay taxes and use the money that comes in to do what they want, without any repercussions if it is used for something against the principles and wishes of the taxpayer. The contrast is quite stark and a far cry from “hypocrisy”. Planned Parenthood should take a lesson from that and become a full charity organization. If people want to “step up”, as you call it, and support them financially then that’s fine. But I want my tax dollars to stop supporting something that I find morally reprehensible. When the government takes our taxes and puts it into a campaign to destroy abortion clinics and take away your right to kill/choose then I don‘t want to hear you all whining on how unfair it all is that your tax dollars are used for something you don’t agree with.

Posted on February 2, 2012 at 7:48pmMODERATION~ Your argument is extremely flawed. Using said logic illegal anything is just regulation IE “Big Government”. Abortion is a simple cut and dry case, is the unborn child/clump of cells alive? If yes, then abortion should be illegal in all cases minus saving the life of the mother. If no? Then abortion is perfectly fine ,until the clump of cells is alive thus having rights, for whatever reason the mother wants.
If it isn’t life then terminating a pregnancy would really just be assault or an unlicensed medical procedure? I’ve never really understood why abortion was legal, no one has answered the only question that mattered in abortion. Is it life? No one wants to sentence an innocent person to death, yet people are allowed to have abortions without knowing unequivocally if it’s alive or not. Not many err on the side of caution today I suppose, very strange.

Posted on February 3, 2012 at 1:11amI think it‘s insane that we’re actually moving backwards in terms of health, and I think it’s part of the reason why you will see the Republicans lose in the general election.
First they talk about stopping abortion, now you have candidates actually talking about and discussing a State’s ability to ban birth control. Seriously?
I am for personal responsibility. Men and women should both be responsible and use a condom during sex. If they don’t use a condom, they should have birth control and use that as well. If for some reason they aren’t responsible there, I think the morning after pill is a completely acceptable safety net. I think it’s stupid if plan B is used as a form of birth control but what can you do, a lot of people aren’t responsible.
I just think it’s completely backwards and hypocritical for people to be anti abortion, and then say “religious freedom” when those crazy Christian Scientists choose not to give life saving medicine to their sick children because of their “beliefs.”
I’m not saying it is this way, but it sometimes comes across like you only care about the unborn child, and then the second it’s born, it’s “fair game” and left to fend for itself.
Every Christian should practice what they preach, and instead of having a 4th child of their own, go adopt a child that is less advantaged. Two of the Christian families that I’m good friends with(yes, the ones you claim don’t exist Billy) have adopted African America

If you’re religious, I hope you choose to pray to your God for forgiveness for knowingly spewing lies about me. If you choose to repent, you will likely continue to spew lies because it’s not uncommon for religious people to be hypocritical when it comes to their “sinning.”
The main point was that I am personally against abortion and wouldn’t choose it and wish more women would keep them and give them up for adoption. I then talked about how much joy I saw in the eyes of adoptive parents when they held their new babies in their arms and that it would make anyone weep and wish women would choose the personal torment of having to give up a baby vs the joy they bring an adoptive parent. That being said, I’m not for me or the Government forcing decision on a woman and her body.

I don’t and have never had a problem with you. I enjoy a lively debate and like being questioned what I think and why I think it.
It’s why I get frustrated when talking to believers and they just talk about “well I believe this” and “I believe that.” It comes off as mean, but I don’t care what people “believe”, I care what people “think” because it involves an actual thought process and critical thinking, and shows that you are open to new evidence and that if you are wrong, you will no longer think that way.
When you talk about “belief” it usually just ends up back to “well God said this” or “The Bible said that.” It involves memorization of a book and of what you’re told by people in authority in whatever church you attend. It comes across as that they’re not open to new evidence and that if even given bulletproof evidence to the contrary, they won’t change their mind.
And I am in no way saying I have given infallible proof for the existence of a God. I likely will never be able to, but I never ever claimed that there is without a doubt no God. I say that I don’t think there is sufficient evidence for a God. I admit that I might be wrong about there not being a God. The annoying part is, most religious people claim they have factual evidence for a God, when they’re in the same boat as I am and mock me for being so sure of myself(which I never say), when they themselves claim their “belief” is 100% true.

Posted on February 2, 2012 at 6:27pmWhat is really amazing to me is the number of women who are passionate about promoting abortion. All female mammals are hardwired to protect their young. That‘s why you don’t get between a large momma mammal and her babies. I’ve always thought that in order to do an abortion, you have to killl more than the developing child. You also have to kill that natural part of a woman which, more than anything in the world, wants to protect her babies. I think this is at least part of what the Bible means when it says that, in the last days, people shall be “without natural affection.”
Another part, of course, is the promotion of same sex “relationships.”

You and I agree though, the occupiers are morons. I think they have some legitimate arguments but they did an utterly horrible job of explaining them and expressing themselves.
I’m one of the few who think that the occupiers and tea party had similar points….obviously the tea party did a much better job at representing themselves and what they stood for.
Tea party is angry at politicians moreso then banks.
Occupy is angry at banks moreso then politicians.
Both groups need to realize that both politicians and banks have sold them out together. Washington=Wall Street, Wall Street=Washington.
Tea party and Occupy had the same argument, “Why the bailouts?” except Occupy missed the point by then saying, “why not bail us out too?” Would they be against a personal bailout if there wasn’t a bank bailout? Who knows but I doubt it.
Despite what many Democrats and liberals say, there is a growing majority of people in this society that want something for nothing which is another reason why I think Obama will win.

A funding decrease to PP means less money for electioneering. If a major charity is allowed to just walk, others might be encouraged to follow. Therefore they have to break proverbial kneecaps to send a message to anyone else.
Basically, Dems only have one core value and it isn’t compassion for others. It’s the protection of funding at all costs. The ends justify any means, regardless of how dishonest or childish. A great example would be to think about the last time a Republican legislature was willing to break the law and flee the state to avoid a bill that would result in decreased election funding.

The fetal cells can also be used to test the toxicity of new and improved food additives and genetically modified food. The collagen and DNA from the mature fetuses can be used for cosmetics and face creams. Nancy Pelosi needs a lot of help to maintain her youthful appearance.
The 1% should fund all abortions for Black fetuses in depressed areas and give the “mothers” an extra $100 for travel and incidentals. Teenage “mothers” should be given an IPOD or IPHONE for being so responsible.
PP could also harvest human eggs to be used to clone superior individuals like Michael “Air” Jordan, Bill Clinton and the smartest man in the world (Barack Obama). A women could earn extra cash by leasing their wombs for nine months.

Honestly, I don’t think I have ever heard of it.

Posted on February 2, 2012 at 8:59pmBilly,
I looked it up. I’m sure I never saw the show, but looks like it might be worth checking out. Of course, we have “progressed” (pun intended) well beyond any worries of the Russians doing this to us.

It was pretty interesting when I saw it back in the late 80′s.
Unfortunately, It has been kept from DVD release. I keep watching EBAY for an old used VHS copy to pop up. Some of the new sealed ones are priced way up there.

Posted on February 2, 2012 at 6:25pmGrammaB, I absolutely agree with you. Its a donation or a grant and they have a right to donate to whoever they want, or not to donate! Are we moving into forced donations?

Posted on February 2, 2012 at 9:37pmIt’s only logical–we’re being forced to buy insurance…it’s the natural “progression” of things that we are “forced” to donate

Posted on February 2, 2012 at 7:33pm@ marine ( doubtful )
liberals and hence dems , are more likely to have no concept of morals, and thus more likely to participate in risky behavior without the forethought of consequence so yes, they are more likely to participate in infanticide as a way to shirk responsibility and anything that would “ inconvenience” their lifestyles
but, im not surprised at your comment , as you are obviously not bright enough to notice that i didnt claim conservatives dont have abortions but merely IMPLIED that liberals are more likely to participate in this action of consequence avoidance
hope i didnt use too many big words for ya

Posted on February 2, 2012 at 6:16pmI would like to have the names of the 26 Senators calling on a private foundation to alter its ethical stand. Apparently those senators are NOT bothered by ethics.

Posted on February 2, 2012 at 6:19pmKomen got off the Titanic before it sank. Planned Parenthood will be defunded, it’s only a matter of when at this point. Cost cuts have to be made and Planned Parenthood is one of the top names on the list. Komen made a wise move, get out now, budget accordingly and weather the storm in a stronger position. These 26 Democrats are idiots.

What, are they suddenly not “pro-choice”?
@angeleyes63
Yes but they’re killing their generationally impoverished welfare leaching voting block off at the same time. I say let them. If a tiny cluster of cells is human life, and if there is a heaven, it will go there (unless it is not human life). And the morally bankrupt welfare broodmare will burn in hell. Problem solved. I’d say it would have been a greater sin for that unwanted child to be raised by such morally bankrupt ingrates. Seven billion people sucking up resources on this blue marble wasn’t even imaginable in the era of the Torah so give it a rest. Our survival is no longer dependent on breeding like rabbits.
Unthinking-mentally-deranged-religious-lunatics need not reply. I will NOT read your post or reply to you.
