Backlash: Graphic Climate Ad Under Fire

Environmental activists are working to distance themselves from a violent advocacy video that hit the Internet last week depicting the gruesome murder of climate change skeptics.  The four-minute video was produced by a London-based group called 10:10 and was removed almost immediately after it debuted.  However, bloggers and news media have replayed the video, sparking critical backlash around the world.  Though 10:10 claims the film was intended to be comedic, the response has been anything but funny.

“With climate change becoming increasingly threatening, and decreasingly talked about in the media, we wanted to find a way to bring this critical issue back into the headlines whilst making people laugh,” the group wrote on its website.  ”Many found the resulting film extremely funny, but unfortunately some didn’t, and we sincerely apologise to anybody we have offended,” the group said. “Oh well, we live and learn.”

But what exactly has been learned?  This most recent case of environmental extremism is similar to an “anonymous” article posted last year on a popular left-leaning political site.  A June 2, 2009, article posted to Talking Points Memo was similarly scrapped after objections to its message: “At what point to do we jail or execute global warming deniers?”

Backlash: Graphic Climate Ad Under Fire

Additionally, as ClimateDepot‘s Marc Morano points out, the “execute skeptics” message is not new:

NASA’s James Hansen has called for trials of climate skeptics in 2008 for “high crimes against humanity.” Environmentalist Robert F. Kennedy Jr. lashed out at skeptics of 2007 declaring “This is treason. And we need to start treating them as traitors”In 2009, RFK, Jr. also called coal companies “criminal enterprises” and declared CEO‘s ’should be in jail… for all of eternity.”

In June 2009, former Clinton Administration official Joe Romm defended a comment on his Climate Progress website warning skeptics would be strangled in their beds. “An entire generation will soon be ready to strangle you and your kind while you sleep in your beds,” stated the remarks, which Romm defended by calling them “not a threat, but a prediction.”

In 2006, the eco-magazine Grist called for Nuremberg-Style trials for skeptics. In 2008, Canadian environmentalist David Suzuki called for government leaders skeptical of global warming to be thrown “into jail.” In 2007, The Weather Channel’s climate expert called for withholding certification of skeptical meteorologists.

A 2008 report found that ‘climate blasphemy’ is replacing traditional religious blasphemy. In addition, a July 2007 Senate reportdetailed how skeptical scientists have faced threats and intimidation.

In 2007, then EPA Chief Vowed to Probe E-mail Threatening to ‘Destroy’ Career of Climate Skeptic and dissenters of warming fears have been called ‘Climate Criminals’ who are committing ‘Terracide’ (killing of Planet Earth) (July 25, 2007) In addition, in May 2009, Climate Depot Was Banned in Louisiana! See: State official sought to ‘shut down’ climate skeptic’s testimony at hearing.

Further, the Hollywood starlet lending her voice to the 10:10 campaign — former X-Filer Gillian Anderson — has been in the spotlight before, warning of certain dangers facing the world.  In 1999, Anderson said she had been doing “a lot of research” and was sure Y2K was going to “break” everything, but saw a silver lining of a world without computers:

I think what this is about right now is, this is an opportunity for us to get back to basics in a sense, and for us to unite as communities to help each other, so that eventually, if there is a devastating effect, that at least we can join together with the people around us, instead of, you know, acting out of fear and robbing our neighbors for food, or for money, or whatever, because there’s nothing around. …

10:10 had intended to widely distribute its gory film to movie theaters, but has since scratched those plans and environmental allies are quickly retreating from their support.  One group, 350.org, has been an official partner with 10:10, but now claims it will sever all ties.  Under a post titled, “Days that Suck,” 350.org founder Bill McKibben called the 10:10 video “gross” and lamented how “Climate skeptics are going to make a big deal of this.”

“The video represents the kind of stupidity that really hurts our side,” McKibben wrote, “reinforcing in people’s minds a series of preconceived notions, not the least of which is that we’re out-of-control elitists. Not to mention crazy, and also with completely misplaced sense of humor.”  McKibben’s 350.org — also a cosponsor of this weekend’s 10/2 “One Nation” rally held in Washington, D.C. — claims the group had nothing to do with 10:10′s latest advertising ploy and did not know about the video until it was released on the Internet.

“I think the idea of a comedy is fine, and even the gore and blood is part of our pop culture,” Morano told Greenwire today. “What is not fine, and what is actually very revealing, is that their impulse — the intellectual strain that runs through the alarmist movement — is to try to silence their critics. They blame a handful of skeptics for ruining all their schemes, and this is them expressing their frustrations,” he said.

Perhaps more disturbing, a behind-the-scenes look at the making of the film shows one of the school children — covered in the fake exploded flesh of a classmate — giving his official endorsement of the questionable messaging medium, saying, “I think it is fine to explode children for a good cause.”

The whole 10:10 video debacle has been unofficially dubbed “Splattergate,” and many are questioning whether it will have as significant negative impact on the environmentalists’ movement as the Climategate controversy from earlier this year.

If the commercial makers had gotten together with the Donald Duck loving, anti-Beck propagandist (see the story elsewhere on this site), they could have had Donald Duck pushing the button with cartoon blood and gore and called in “fantasy violence.”

I have little to say, except to point out that we are at AT LEAST a thirty year low in hurricanes. Prior to that (and this applies to temperature and atmospheric CO2 levels) they didn’t really keep good records. Satellites changed a lot. I can’t be the only one who remembers all the doom and gloom that was going to beset us from all the increased hurricane activity.

It’s not clear to me exactly how these people think they are going to die. Higher seas? Are they happening now? Bangladesh is sinking, so that hardly counts as evidence. More vicious storms? See my first paragraph.

From a profound sense of meaninglessness? Yes, I think that gets much closer. They thought they had a good fight on their hands, one in which no hard decisions had to be made that forced them to consider just what they believe. Now, they are back to existential ennui.

30 year low? Where did you get that? We have had 14 named storms, 7 hurricanes, 5 of which were major(cat3 or above) which is all above average which is 9-10, 5-6, and 2-3 respectively. lets not forget there is still a over a month and a half left in the season.

Of course Hurricanes are at a 30 year low; one just has to actually search for the real data that the eco-facists never show the public:

Global warming is a hoax. period. Now even though it is a hoax doesnt mean we should not look for more efficient and less damaging fuel scources, because that would be irresponsible and actually finding new things that are better is what science and progress is all about in a civilization. Global warming and cap and trade is just a scam to tax rich countries so a few can control the money and spread it around the world to secure their grasp on POWER. plain and simple…….motive included.enjoy

@Psychosis. Could you point out specifically what you are referencing? I would also point out that not reaching a “10 year trend” doesn’t contradict it being the hottest year on record. It seems your argument would be “It’s the hottest year ever, but it’s not as hot as the trend suggested it would be”. Again, it would be helpful if you pointed out what you are referencing.

You are right, it means nothing. Wasn’t the reporting also that the winter of 2009/2010 was one of the coldest on record? Did we ever have an Ice Age? Did we have a thawing from that? What was the climate like during the age of the Dinosaurs? Did T-Rex drive an Explorer? Sadly he ran out of gas and couldn’t keep the carbon emissions up enough to keep his climate warm. @FLYTB28 I am curious why one season is pertinent in a temperature record that is consistently trending upwards.

As to ice ages and past fluctuations: Those have been dealt with in exhaustive detail by scientists. (I’m not simply throwing that out there as a “stand alone” rebuttal and am more then willing to provide various linked explanations of why past fluctuations are inadequate to describe current trends.)

What God is doing is clouding their minds to show their insanity so that the Luciferian programs are placed in the open for all moral people to see and KNOW the battles against the forces of darkness we’re facing. Jesus promised us that God would have these shouted from the rooftops in the last days.

It is now up to us who are on God’s side to use this material to wake up moral Progressives and people sitting on the fence. God has given us a great opening.. let’s run with the ball to victory.

This is very disturbing. I just received a notice from my child’s school requesting my permission for him to participate in a Think Energy program. The program was developed in concert with Resource Action Programs. The collaborating partners on the program are 1. National Energy Foundation (this is an independent British charity, established to encourage the more sustainable use and generation of energy.) 2. PPL Electric Utilities (our local energy company) and 3. The Pennsylvania Department of Education. I wondered why my child’s school, North Pocono Intermediate School grades 4 and 5, chose to participate in this project; when I investigated, I learned that teachers get college credit for having students participate. After seeing this insane video I am very concerned about a British Energy Charity being involved in my child’s American education. I am also wondering if my school district actually investigated this project prior to accepting their presentation at my child’s school. Furthermore, I wonder how many other children around the country have brought similar letters home. My child wants me to sign the permission slip because the entire school all 4th and 5th grades are participating. I was going to sign it but after seeing this video I may have changed my mind.

At least, they are actually asking your permission to expose your child to this indoctrination. You should ask if they are also going to present the opposing viewpoint and let the children with the help of their parents draw conclusions OR is this going to be a typical lib one-sided Homer Simpson style debate. How many school systems are presenting this to the children without asking parents’ permission? How many parents are actually involved in what is being taught(indoctrinated) in the so-called public schools?

sadly this is not “splattergate” but an ideology that rings true with the progressive agenda. Not only that but climate change scientific data has been proven to be fallacious, with many scientists standing up against what the eco-idiots clame as fact has come out to be “FIXED”

No, it’s splatter-gate. Otherwise known as a clever way to distract the masses from real problems that require them to rethink their ideology and the Fox-delivered narrative. I call it rearranging deck chairs on the Titanic.

This is just simply revolting. All these people are really interested in is the billions of dollars they’ll make on this mega scam. I’ll admit that some of the nuts really believe all this crap but Al Gore believes in Al Gore and the billions he stands to make. But none of them cares a da_n about human beings.

He isn’t worried about mortgage or electric bill payments. He also has plenty of jet fare to fly around spreading his word. The huffington post misses you. Thanks for your input. Real, the issue here is that the posters on this site are smart enough to draw a parallel between 10.10 and the leading spokesman for the evils of climate change. (hint: they both have to do with the environment) If you would like for us to explain why she mentioned Gore, I’m sure us morons can help you out. How about instead of making an @ss out of yourself, you try to think for two seconds before insulting people for no reason. Maybe being a tool makes you feel better about yourself, but I’m glad you vented here instead of on someone in real life. We already know your type around here, and simply ignore you.

“Global Warming”, “Climate Change”, now “Climate Disruption” is over. They can call it whatever chatchy phrase they want. The lie has been exposed. Only the kool-aid drinkers and tree-humpers refuse to believe that the climate actually cycles. They will now need to find a new religion.

The left‘s version of funny isn’t funny at all. Us adults have had it with the climate trolls. STFU already!

The hour hand on a clock also cycles, but I’m certainly going to get my clock fixed if it ever starts doing so twice an hour.

Scientists are well aware of the cycles, but are submitting that these cycles alone do not explain what is taking place.

Take a northern greenhouse. Inject four times the amount of co2 into it during a sunny winter day when the vents are closed. All that happens is plants grow faster and eat the co2 and make oxygen for us and animals to breath. co2 is a harmless gas that the plant cycle keeps in balance. Taxing co2 emissions is a plan to bring all the world economies to the same lethargic state so they can introduce their one world governance. It’s what Obama and the rest of the washington boys and girls are all about. It will take this election and the next to end this madness.

@computerdweller. Beyond questioning your assertion, I’m certainly not suggesting that in the right quantities CO2 is harmful. (And neither is any serious scientist) The question is at what point this balance is shifted.

Lastly, I think it should also be quite evident that the considerations with our climate moves well beyond what makes plants grow the fastest.

There is a balance that is important to be held. In our atmosphere, it is about 70% nitrogen, 26% oxygen, some other gases, and 1% or less of CO2.

The problem is, being how dumb humanity is…..We think taxing emissions is the way to go. What we should be doing is planting trees and other plants to offset the extra CO2.

But of course that’s a long term idea that is not much of a money maker. Why do you think “Global Warming” is only picking up steam now? It wasn’t this big of an issue 10-15 years ago…..It’s always been an issue that is long-term, and tackling environmental issues does not garner votes…..Of course until it’s supposedly “catastrophic” and the only way to fix it is to tax it.

@Jumper…Yes they are aware of the cycles. Think about this though. We are not as warm as we were prior to the Ice Age. How do we know this? Most of Florida (for example) use to be underwater before the Earth started cooling leading to the Ice Age. The coast lines were far different then.

People are saying “It’s the hottest summer on record.” How long have we kept records? When they put the sensing stations in place, where were they located? Where are they located now? The stations themselves haven’t moved but we have moved around them. One is now in a narrow alley way between two buildings. Is it any wonder the temps being recorded from these sites have gone up?

NASA says the only way to get an accurate reading of the Earth is from space, not on the ground. They have done so and surprise! surprise! the temps are NOT going up.

It’s funny to me that in a single country, one place is hitting record highs while another is hitting record lows on the same day at the same time.

When you cherry pick your information, you can make anything true. What people need to do is research for themselves. BOTH sides and get the WHOLE truth, not just the parts they want you to know.

TheWholeTruth, the claim about NASA finding no warming IS NOT TRUE. There are sensors at every level of the atmosphere, as well as in space, and they all point to warming, as do sensors recording ocean temperatures. You can find responses to your and many other bogus climate-denying arguments at http://skepticalscience.com/argument.php. Check it out, if you dare.

Also, if it is the hottest temperature since human civilization existed, then we ought to be worried about continued warming. pointing to periods of time before we had to sustain human civilization provides small comfort to the intelligent scientists wondering whether we can continue to sustain such a civilization. But you totally ignore this fact by comparing our current climate to pre-ice age levels. Finally, the rates of change are happening faster than in any recorded period of time even before civilization. If that doesn’t scare you. nothing will.

I hate seeing this idiocy on the topic of climate change, not only is it a disgusting video, it really shows the mindset of the extremists.

All I care about is the objective scientific conclusions about climate change; is it real, and if so how do we prepare for it. Unfortunately we‘ll never know the truth because the extremists on both sides have politicized the issue and made it so toxic that they don’t care what the truth is, they just want their side to win.

The ole bait-n-switch trick … works every time. Can‘t fool ’em … BLAST ‘EM !!!! Looks like London bridges are actually fallin’ down, (less the fair lady – [teacher in video]), when trying to connect a lesson and/or message to the vulnerable young children in a captive setting.

Wonder if the “fair lady” plans to (press-the-button) on Justice Burton of the Royal Court of London that ruled on a case brought against England‘s Secretary of State for Education and Skills concerning making Al Gores’ …MOCKUMENTARY : AN INCOHERENT SPOOF… part of the cirriculum for secondary students ??? The court ruled that the film “ promoted partisan political views”
and contained at least NINE “ERRORS” that are easily researchable – should you become – (skeptical). While your searchin’ Gore … check his take on the Earth‘s core temperature as per his claim while on Conan’s Show. He claimed our Earth’s core is MILLIONS OF DEGREES !!! (try 7,000).
Where is Katie C. and/or Charlie G. when ya‘ need ’em ??? Conan and his audience sort-a ooooooo and then seemed to uhhhhhhh ( in stead of the ahhhh that normally follows a productive and interesting learning experience ) … then morphed the conversation on into the next mindnumbing quest for sense. Remenber Gore and Obummer stated that the “DEBATE IS OVER” concerning
      “man-made-global warming” … uhhhhhh … “climate-change” … uhhhhhh … “clean-green-energy” …
uhhhhhh … and the latest spin term from the White House … “global-climate-disruption”. WHAT NEXT !!!!!!!

Finally, looks like parts of Europe are buyin’ into the Islamic “BUTTON-BLAST“ approach to getting an opposing view to ”see-it” their way. The self-appointed (annointed) ruling class elites, MUST convince the infidels (skeptics) by any and/or all methods possible because THEIR IDEOLOGY is soooooooooo important and valid (in their mindseye) that the proverbial ENDS justifies the MEANS,
regardless of the opposing views evidence and/or proposed ideas for more civilized and rational approach to alternative MEANS.
