Banned: New Fast Food Restaurants in South L.A.

The Los Angeles City Council has banned new stand-alone fast food restaurants from opening within half a mile of each other* in South L.A., citing rising health concerns and the need for more food choices in the area.
“This is not an attempt to control people as to what they can put into their mouths. This is an attempt to diversify their food options,” councilmember Jan Perry told KABC in a seemingly contradictory statement.
KABC reports:
New stand-alone fast food restaurants have been banned from setting up shop in South Los Angeles, due to rising health concerns by the city council.
How many fast food eateries does one area really need? The Los Angeles City Council thinks South Los Angeles and South East Los Angeles need new choices as these regions face an over-concentration of such restaurants.
“This is not an attempt to control people as to what they can put into their mouths. This is an attempt to diversify their food options,” said councilmember Jan Perry.
Perry’s new plan bans new so-called “stand alone” fast food restaurants opening within half a mile of existing restaurants.
Such stand-alone establishments are on their own property, but those same restaurants are OK if they’re a part of a strip mall, according to the new rules.
“Give a grocery store and a housing combination a chance to come in,” Perry said.
The city says around 72 percent of restaurants in South L.A. are fast food establishments, which is much higher than West L.A. and countywide averages which range in the 40s.
UPDATE:
Hot Air’s Ed Morrissey offers an explanation for the lack of fine cuisine in the area, and why a government ban may not be the answer:
What, there aren’t any high-priced French restaurants in South LA? Sacre bleu! That might have something to do with the high unemployment and low incomes in the area. Perry complains that 72% of the restaurants in the area are fast food compared to West LA’s concentration being in the mid-40s, but the obvious explanation is that higher income areas can support higher-priced restaurants. If Olive Garden could make a profit in South LA, they’d already be there. The issue isn’t that fast-food restaurants are hogging the commercial space, but that other establishments aren’t moving into the area.
(H/T: Hot Air)

Posted on December 10, 2010 at 12:35pmIt is a power grab and so is Senate Bill S.510 which may be passed into law any day now by the Senate. The bill was held up in the House, but they figured out a sneaky way to get it back to the Senate. They attached it to a spending bill. This is a massive and dangerous bill which should have been sent back to the Senate as a stand-alone bill for an up or down vote. Now it will probably pass as an afterthought to the spending bill which much be passed to keep the Government going. This is a rotten way to pass legislation which is, in essence, a takeover of our food supply by the Federal Government. It puts control of our food into the hands of the FDA, the same organization which gave us genetically modified foods WITHOUT EVEN TESTING to see if they are harmful to our health. If you want to protest the Food Safety Bill, contact your Senators and tell them not to vote in favor of any legislation which includes it. Go to http://www.healthfreedomusa.org to learn more.

Posted on December 10, 2010 at 1:55pmUhh the food safety bill already passed. It was a unanimous vote and it wasn’t attached to the spending bill. You’re a day late and a dollar short.
You‘re correct that it’s a power grab and bad policy, but you’re late to the party.

Posted on December 10, 2010 at 2:31pmI believe I’m correct that the bill has still not passed the Senate on a final vote. The Senate version of the bill passed the Senate on 11/30 and headed to the House. Then it was discovered that the Senate version was flawed, and it was up to the House to correct it and send it back to the Senate. They did so but attached it to a spending bill in a rather sneaky maneuver. Now the Senate has to do a final vote and send it on to Obama. This bill can still be stopped, but I’m not extremely hopeful unless a lot of people rise up and protest it to their Senators. The more I read about this bill, the more I am convinced this is the most dangerous legislation in our lifetime.

Posted on December 10, 2010 at 3:11pmJust found out the spending bill to which S.510 is attached will be voted on next week. So there is still time to protest to your Senators regarding the underhanded way they are trying to get this legislation passed. Please research S.510 for yourselves and you’ll discover this bill gives tremendous powers to the FDA which is known to be a corrupt agency.

Posted on December 12, 2010 at 1:02amYou‘re correct in that it hasn’t been signed into law yet, but it already passed in the Senate unanimously. No amount of letter writing is going to affect that. What this bill really is is an earmark vessel. This is what they do. They take a piece of legislation that they THINK will be widely popular among all americans (after all who doesn’t want safe food right?) and stick all their pork into it.
This is standard procedure. They have come to expect that nobody is actually going to read what’s in a bill and just be pleased by the their titles like…”The Dream Act, No Child Left Behind, Food Safety, etc”. They count on people looking at the titles and saying “oh hell yeah, who doesn’t want that” without actually knowing what’s in it. Then they slip all their earmarks into it, and nobody is the wiser.
The house is just getting their turn at putting their earmarks into it.
I agree it’s bad law. I agree the motivations behind it are not noble. But the bill is going to pass. Politicians only respond to the will of the people during election cycles. We are much too far away from the 2012 election cycle for them to care about what us pleebs think right now.

Posted on December 10, 2010 at 12:29pmGreat, a grocery store would need a lot more room than a fast food eatery would take up…unless it is a “mom & pop” operation which will go under fast due to the inability to compete price-wise and the grand and glorious residents in the area stealing them blind.
More housing? Great…more high rent slums the gangsters can park their butts in front of and sell drugs.
If a fast food establishment can open there and be profitable, then it means employment…and taxes…and you liberal spenders paying down your debt.

I just bought one and found out that buying ammo over the internet will be banned as of January 1, 2011. The town I live in has recently run a campaign of obtaining voluntary relinquishment of firearms for a trade of a low-value Walmart gift card in the guise of “disarming gang members”. The end result will be exactly the opposite. The thugs will keep their guns and the defenseless poor will become easy targets.
I want my hamburgers, guns, ammo, and Bible to be left the “F” alone.

Everyone who lives within a walking distance of those restaurants are already paying $42,000 in tuition and/or paying a couple thousand to be in a Greek House or the same amount in other types of housing (plus parking rates!)-buying a burger is not a problem for any student. Those fast food places set up there because they can make a profit. We want those institutions for fast and easy food at odd hours of the day when other restaurants aren’t open. There are plenty of other options besides burgers in South LA! The other important thing to note is that Jan Perry went to USC and she is now limiting the choices for economic growth that she oversees as being the council woman for that area.

Put the Whopper down and slowly back away….don’t throw your life away over simple mistake, son!
Congress may approve a plan to help with the fast food epidemic….they are considering legislation that would replace the the “Carl’s Jr.” girls with Helen Thomas. There was a private screening on Capitol Hill behind closed doors. There were reports of some lawmakers screaming “My eyes!!! My eyes!!!” and the doors had to be replaced due to the deep fingernail marks on the inside.

Posted on December 11, 2010 at 1:34amCalifornian Democrats are the problem, not the fast food business…so cut more jobs & eliminate more state tax revenue by banning fast food restaurants!
On a totally unrelated note, some unemployment numbers:
9.8 percent: United States
12.4 percent: California
12.5 percent: Los Angeles County
14.3 percent: the city of Los Angeles

Fox reported Dec 6, 2010
California Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger declared a state of emergency over the state’s finances on Wednesday, raising pressure on lawmakers to negotiate a state budget that is more than a month overdue and will need to close a $19 billion shortfall.
The deficit is 22 percent of the $85 billion general fund budget the governor signed last July for the fiscal year that ended in June, highlighting how the steep drop in California’s revenue due to recession, the housing slump, financial market turmoil and high unemployment have slashed its all-important personal income tax collection.
In the declaration, Schwarzenegger ordered three days off without pay per month beginning in August for tens of thousands of state employees to preserve the state’s cash to pay its debt, and for essential services
But there to concerned about apple slices & free health care & food stamps for illegals!

Posted on December 11, 2010 at 1:56pmWhat they really didn’t say was that “South LA” (aka South Central) is about 80% illegal aliens and on welfare. It used to be predominately black residents, but they were run out in the 1990′s. Most who receive welfare are likely to be obese in this country. It can’t be the persons fault, it must be the evil fast food establishment.
