Barney Frank: Not Allowing Gays and Straights to Shower Together is ‘Discrimination’

Not allowing gay military personnel to shower with straight military peronnel would be “discrimination.” That’s the position of Rep. Barney Frank (D-MA), an openly gay member of Congress who is a proponent of banishing the military’s “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” policy.

Frank told CNSNews.com that the idea that people might be concerned over gays and straights showering together, and the possible disruption it could case, is a “silly issue”:

“To accept the principle that homosexuals can’t shower with other people is a degree of discrimination that goes far beyond this. We don’t get ourselves dry cleaned. We tend to take showers when we go to the gym; when we play sports,” Frank said.

    big gay barney would be living a dream if he could shower with other military men. Having served under don‘t ask don’t tell, this policy change will not end well. There is no room for liberace flamers in the military. If you want to be gay and keep it to yourself than other men can live with that. The moment you start dressing like elton john, you may find a bullet in you from friendly fire. Not that i would do that but i know the atitude from actually serving. More government intervention into every facet of everyones life. when will it end.

      The real problem with ****‘s is that they’re mentally ill. So whether you are showering with one or accidentally dropping a grenade near their bunk, the **** should never have been there in the first place. It’s not proper to shower with the mentally ill and its really not proper to frag one either. Its better to keep the ****’s away from normal people, especially in the military. ****’s need psychological help and are not compatible with military life.

    They should allow them to shower together, Just let it be known that if a gay person looks at another in an unwelcomed way, there will be a problem, some straight soldier may end up feel he needs to protect himself and there will be fights. Give the gays their own little closet to live in.

      what makes me upset is that starship troopers was one of the greatest conservative books ever. they didnt have men and women showering together. they didnt even serve together. they separated them due to the fact that women had better reflexes and math skills so they were pilots. the men being natural fighters were infantry. in the book the men would volunteer on the deck that was closest to the women in transport just to be able to hear them from time to time. women had an appeal of respect and mystery. they were also separated for the obvious sexual issues. that should be mandatory reading in high school.

      When I was in basic, we had a dude that we were certain was gay, he never showered! After a month of his smell, we finally threw him the shower and dumped water on him. We couldn’t take his stench any longer. We knew he was gay, and that he was uncomfortable showering with us, after that point he showered at night when we were sleeping.

      The point is, when you allow a gay man to shower with a straight man–openly, it is ideologically the same as letting men shower with ugly women. The guy might not have any interest in the woman, but the woman sure does.

      If you give gays their own shower, it is the same as letting men and women shower together, both parties are interested sexually in the other. Can you say orgy?

      If you make gay men shower with women, and gay women shower with men….well that won’t be good either. Imagine a straight dude claiming to be gay so he could shower with the chicks…I‘m sure that wouldn’t happen. All of sudden he’s like, okay I’m not gay anymore.

      No way you put this, is this going to be a good thing. I don’t care if a gay guy is manning the M60 behind me and covering me with fire as I move to another position. In battle, I agree with Reid that you don’t have to be straight to shoot straight, but in garrison, it becomes a completely different story.

      Saying that it is discrimination to not allow gays to shower with straights is very true, however it is not wrong discrimination, it is common sense. It is like discriminating against hiring a person because they aren’t suited for the company. Did they discriminate against that person because of the abilities? Yep. Is it wrong? Nope. Maybe hiring that person–who is unqualified, would make the company have to suffer in order to train them to get them up to speed. It poses a logistical dilemma.

      Same with gays in the military.

      There is no reasonable solution for showering with gays, the only one is to let gay men shower with straight men. For some reason that just doesn’t seem right. Screw discrimination.

      It’s not the gays getting punched in the face they should be worried about, it’s the gays that will be left on the field dying (fear of aids, I wouldn’t help them), or the ones who will be caught in crossfire (on purpose, of course), or the gays that get a bullet in the back (”I fired, and he got in the way). This issue is being shoved down others throats, the thought that everyone is tolerant is ridiculous……tit’s one thing to think your buddy is gay…it’s another to actually know it. There are a good many “southern boys” in the military that WILL NOT tolerate this, and because of that, there wil be alot of gay soldiers coming home in boxes.

      The only time I have encountered open bay showers was basic. I have deployed twice, been to Korea twice, we always have seperate showers. In the field, you dont shower. Why is Frankenstien trying to bring up showering?

      why not let males and females shower together…what is the difference? here is what the repeal of DADT will get us:

      BECAUSE OF THE REPEAL OF DADT, gays are allowed to openly serve in the military, they now open them selves up to discrimination, being ostricized, and possibly violence. Why then, would they even want to serve openly? The only solution to openly serving gays in the military would be completely segregated military regiments, living quarters, dining facilities…essentially…a completely separate gay military which, would then allow for the regular military to be condemed for being discriminatory, cost outrageous amounts of money to manage, ineffective and nothing more than a failure. ANYONE that supported the ban of DADT is a fool to think otherwise. As it stands, gays can and do serve in the military. Many, if not all, serve our country well but, this is and issue better left in the closet.

Again, we have another “progressive” “skirting” the issues………. NO, I never “knowingly” showered with gay people…and yes WildJoker5, agree with your assessment about not really having had to shower in an open environment like that since I played high school sports…….It’s a non issue really, this guy is a creep……plain and simple….maybe he should be concentrating on actually jump starting our economy but we all know…defending progressive rights movements agendas is more important to him.

      Is it possible that not being able to wash and sponge your fellow Marine is discrimination?       If I knew you were gay, I was have apprehensiveness to shower with you in a community shower as being gay isn‘t a RACE it’s a sexual preference. Since gays are sexually attracted to the same sex, this would be an enticement for them to gawk and make comments while showering as they don’t have to hide it anymore. When I am training and fighting for my country, I don’t want to lend that option to anyone whom it would benefit. If it’s discrimination, let women and men all share the same shower since sexual preferences would be erased and all would have to desensitize themselves to it. If you are gay, keep it to yourself as knowing who you want to sleep with is not of my concern and not yours to tell me.

      Why don’t we let everyone shower together? The same reason that you don’t put a fox guard over the hen house. Just because you are gay does not mean you are checking out every guy/gal you encounter. A homosexual in the military will have great respect for those he/she serves with and will not be looking. Besides, how can this be an issue? During don‘t ask don’t tell there have been gays in the same showers and I don’t recall any reports of issues. Dumb question. There is plenty to go after Frank on, this is not one of those items.

      Int the Infantry when i left the Army in 1991 we still had car wash showers. sometimes when training around Germany we were at the mercy of other units to use their facilities. remember one unit allowing us to shower with a hose at their motorpool. If gays can shower with straight, it should be mandatory for women soldiers to shower with men. it is only fair

      I was stationed in West Germany from 1988 to 1990. There were two guys that I knew to be gay in my unit.

      The first guy was an effeminate man. This guy was in pretty good with the 1st SGT and so would show up for alerts with his nails still painted and his makeup still on. About once a month you would see this guy all made up.

      The 2cd guy I had no idea he was gay, until we were in Graf. I was getting off a 24 hour shift of CQ duty and headed for the showers. There’s SPC Numbnutts ( not his real name) from 2cd Platoon. No biggy. As I’m showering, I notice dude is just staring at me, and not my face. It made me very uncomfortable.

      Later, I’m talking with my buddies from 2cd Platoon. I asked them what was up with Numbnutts. Before I could relate my story the guys all chime in “He’s ok. Just don’t take a shower with him. He likes guys.”

      “Crap, too late!”

      Maybe I am a homophobe, but I know if I was still in the U.S. Army, I would not enjoy serving beside openly gay men. I understand that it’s way more accepted now, but hey, I’m a 40 year old veteran that is pretty set in his ways.

      What some of you fail to realize is that while DADT was/is enforced, heterosexuals routinely showered with homosexuals and ya know what? No one knows. No one will ever know. Why? Because they weren’t allowed to be open about their sexual orientation thus was forced to be seen as a man who had to shower with other men.

      If they were allowed to say “I’m Gay!” they can shower separately. Logistically I know this will be a nightmare at first but you’d just have to treat homosexuals as a separate sex and allocate them their own space.

      New barracks design gives two soldiers one living area that has a common bathroom and kitchen, each soldier has their own rooms. Like a very small two bedroom apartment with no living room. I believe they can be on the same floor in this setup. If it’s an older barracks building just use the same system as always, separate floors.

      Learn how to argue against the idea that homosexuality is a normal behavior, people.

      This issue is about gender identity – how the two genders are different.

      Now, homosexuals already believe that the genders are different, and that they have their respective identities; You see this with their exclusive preference for a single gender in their amorous affairs, even when the majority of that gender prefer the opposite sex; You also see this in their mannerisms, which are intended to immitate the opposite gender for the express purpose of seeming more amorously acceptable to the opposite sex.

      This whole thing is not about combat and enlisted, they are the tip of the industrial-military complex, iceberg, this is about redistributing military $ to the poor downtrodden gays. Letting them into the huge labrynth of offices, boards and think-tanks. You thought military toilet seats were expensive before…. Ike was right !

      This is another example of the progressive agenda chipping

      Barney Frank is trying to make sodomy legal in all states and this law will do it.

      Wow, I dont know where you have deployed or where you have been stationed. I guess you have never had to set on a sheet of 4×8 plywood with 6 holes cut into it and no walls dividing you from the person going to the bathroom next to you… Or taken a shower in a room with 5 gallon water cans hanging from the ceiling for an open bay shower. Yes the Army is getting better for privacy, but still…

      If gays are allowed to shower or co-habitat with straights, will straights be allowed to shower and co-habitat with the opposite sex? The reason why men and women aren’t allowed to do that now is because of sexual attraction and the possibility of sexual relations. Allowing someone who might be sexually attracted or aroused to shower or co-habitat with another, regardless of sexual preference or gender just isn’t allowed under the articles of the UCMJ.

      Does this mean that ole Barney is implying that the military should go the “Starship Trooper” route?
