Baseball Player Faints After Being Hit by Pitch…in the Arm

Will Rhymes Collapses After Being Hit By Pitch

It might not be too incredible to think that a baseball player would collapse after getting hit by a Major League pitch. But what if the player was hit in the arm? You might not think that would cause someone to collapse. But watch the clip of what happened to Will Rhymes of the Tampa Bay Rays on Wednesday night:

Business Insider explains:

The 95 mph fastball by Franklin Morales sounded like it hit squarely on the bone, and a large welt immediately began to form. Rhymes tried to stay in the game, going to first base. But after a few moments, he took a few steps and collapsed into the arms of first base coach George Hendrick.

You‘re close but you don’t have it quite right. I think the Commissioner should recruit those “Environmental Nazis” that closed down that ice cream shop in Mass., to protect the patrons, to protect the wooden baseball bats. Were they not living beings. The trees. After all the players don’t need protecting, they can care for themselves. Who’s to know whether these bats are conscious beings or not and whether pain is being inflicted upon them. If we don’t know we must er on the safe side. I say no more wooden bats or fines will follow. Also, were not the hides on the baseballs previously living tissue. Is it not possible that they may have residual sensitivity to being swatted by a wooden bat. I say no hide covered balls. Left them throw stones.

In highschool I roled my ankle a few times playing basketball. I can remember two of them like they were yesterday because they were so bad. They didn’t really hurt except for the initial “shock.” Anyway a few minutes afterwards I basically just passed out and felt really cold; I figure I went into shock. I’m assuming it has to do with too much adrenaline or something.

Oh come on. We have hockey players actually diving in front of 95+ mph slapshots where the puck is a chunk of galvanized rubber. Chara has a slap shot of 108 mph. Hockey players dive in front of those.

On the other end of the spectrum, you look at a soccer player the wrong way and he starts flopping around like a fish out of water.

I am sure the fast ball hurt. But to collapse from shock? Buck up MLB.

I agree hockey players are tough (if not insane) but they do have the benefit of padding. Getting hit squarely with a 95 mph baseball with the only padding being a thin piece of fabric is not the same thing. Nothing against hockey players.

@IAUSAPAT – Tell that to Richard Panik, Daymond Langkow, Steve Stamkos, Zdeno Chara, or a whole host of other players who have gone face to puck. Also, while goalies have a lot of padding, often times players block shots with areas that are not padded.

And the argument of a rubber puck…
      #1 It’s not soft rubber.
#2 Game pucks are served to the ice ROCK HARD FROZEN so they slide better and bounce less.

That said, a 95MPH fast ball to the forearm is sure to cause pain, enough I would guess that the brain could “short” and cause you to faint.

Yes, but the hockey players are not getting hit on bare skin by the puck most of the time and also have gear on when they do get hit (I have been playing hockey for almost 10 years). There is no need to call this guy a wimp for slightly fainting after being hit by a 95 mph fastball, you have no idea what his conditions are. Second, to arrogantly post something about soccer tells me that you are probably a teenager and haven’t played the sport at a high level.

I would’ve normally agreed with all of you until I started taking martial arts classes. Our instructor is big on striking pressure points/nerve bundles. That’s probably what happened here. A well-placed strike on a certain part of the arm can throw the heart out of rhythm, plus one to the solar plexus can kill. Did anyone see the basketball game where the player passed out after another guy barely grazed his chin? Major pressure point.

Its called a parasympathetic response. The body reacts on its own to outside forces. His fainting had nothing to do with whether or not he is tough. When you get hit that hard in certain areas of your body, ecsp. joints with all the nerve endings bundled close, your body immediately starts to respond and will manifest its self by dilating blog vessels, which lowers the blood pressure, and the heart right, its just under a minute to reach its full affect and then there is not enough pressure to pump blood to the brain, which caused his pale and sweaty skin, you pass out, once you are on the ground laying flat, there is enough pressure to pump blood to your brain and you wake back up. Your body can also have a sympathetic response, which does just the opposite it increases heart rate and blood pressure, but can only do so for so long and then it drops off, thats what shock is. The worst thing they could do is hold him up and keep him laying down. Thats why he was able to get up after he layer flat, but then when they sat him up in the cart he began to get pale again, and put his head down. It takes a little while to recover. If his arm is not broken and continuing to do damage he would have been fine after about 10 to 20 minutes of rest in the supine (laying down) position. The point being its a natural response and you have absolutely no control over it. i say he was pretty darn tough fighting through the pain and staying up until he lost consciousness, theres no quit in him

Dunno. Looks like it hit the pressure point right in front of the elbow. Strong blows to these areas can cause the nervous system to shut down temporarily. Of course, that usually happens immediately, but I suppose it could be delayed due to adrenalin/excitement/increased blood flow etc… I once had someone karate chop the ones at the shoulders and I literally could not move for about 10 seconds. Didn’t hurt me, but completely immobilized me.

Yes. There r pressure points that can drop u instantly. One n undrarm an one n funnybone area. I hit a friend pretty hard n the elbow one time when i was a teenager and he went out. It was weird n i thought he was playing at first. An iraq vet told me about the armpit one. Also some friends n i hav tried the neck/trap before but not at full strength n u can tell it would work. Only thing w pressure point hits is that it is immediate like u said. Mayb the swellng they mentioned pinched a nerve as it grew over a few seconds.

No Break via ESPN: Rhymes had X-rays taken on his arm at Tropicana Field and the results came back negative.
“I’m shocked,” Rhymes said of the results. “Morales throws 95-96 and that one was pretty firm and it hit me right on the bone because I kind of turned into it. It literally hit me square on the bone. They say it’s one of the strongest bones in the body, so thank God for that.

Not surprising. It’s a traumatic injury to the body. The immediate release of adrenalin got him to first base but as the effect of the blow to his arm, and in particular to the bone set in, the body and mind reacted. Hope he’s okay.
