‘BDS’ and More Details About the Coordinated, Global Attack on Israel

An earlier Blaze story about the California teachers union that seems more focused on US foreign policy than educating students or protecting its members, mentioned the term BDS. BDS stands for – Boycott, Disinvest, Sanctions. The concept of BDS may not be common knowledge, however there is a group putting together a global movement to use BDS against Israel.

One such group is the US Campaign for the Academic and Cultural Boycott of Israel.  Their work is also picking up steam as we enter the summer and move closer to September. Read the June 1,2011 statement from the USCABI wesite;

Occupied Palestine, 1 June 2011 – The Palestinian Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions National Committee (BNC) warmly salutes the Nakba commemoration mass Palestinian marches on 15 May which rekindled a unique spirit of resistance, real hope and heroic initiative in the struggle for the fundamental rights of the Palestinian people. These marches, led mostly by young Palestinian refugees, gave new impetus to the Palestinian struggle for self determination, justice, and return of the refugees ethnically cleansed by Zionist militias and later Israel during the 1948 Nakba.

The Arab Spring of freedom, democracy and social justice that is blossoming across the region was itself largely inspired by decades of Palestinian popular resistance against Israel’s settler colonialism, occupation and apartheid. This Arab Spring is today, in turn, inspiring Palestinian mass peaceful protests, after demonstrating that when the threshold of fear is crossed by enough committed activists and when there is a clear vision of a future free of oppression and subjugation any seemingly invincible oppressor can be overcome.

The large non-violent marches by Palestinian youth in the West Bank, Gaza, Damoun, Jaffa, Maroun er-Ras (Lebanon) and Majdal Shams (Syria) have put the refugees’ right of return back at the core of the question of Palestine. By crossing hitherto impenetrable Israeli lines, real and imagined, into the occupied Golan Heights young Palestinian refugees from Syria, in particular, were able to demonstrate to the world, like their brethren in Tunisia, Egypt and elsewhere had done, that the will to restore rights is mightier than all the swords, including Israel’s futile nuclear arsenal and other weapons of mass destruction.

Aside from the spreading Arab peoples’ revolutions and their ability to topple some of the most brutal dictatorships anywhere, these Nakba Day return marches were buoyed by the ongoing popular resistance to Israel’s illegal wall and colonies built on occupied Palestinian territory and the fast growing global, Palestinian-led BDS movement that is scoring victories surpassing the most optimistic predictions.

The recent establishment on the May Day anniversary of the Palestinian Trade Union Coalition for BDS (PTUC-BDS), by far the largest alliance of Palestinian workers’ and professionals’ unions is but the latest sign that beyond a near consensus in supporting BDS, Palestinian society is gradually implementing BDS tactics in all sectors as part of an effective popular and civic resistance strategy. BDS has also grown at an unparalleled rate lately. Most recently, Stop the JNF, a BDS campaign coordinated with the International Jewish Anti-Zionist Network, Scottish Palestine Solidarity Campaign, Palestine Solidarity Campaign in the UK, and other partners, played a key role in pressuring British Premier David Cameron to drop his honorary patron status in the racist organization.

The withdrawal of the German state-run Deutsche Bahn rail company from Israel’s illegal A1 railway project connecting Tel Aviv with Jerusalem has also set a precedent whose impact cannot be overestimated.

The continued loss of billion-dollar contracts by Veolia, the French company implicated in the illegal tram project connecting Israel’s colonies around Jerusalem with the city, is also a fresh reminder to international corporations that partnership in and profiting from Israel’s violations of international law is not only unethical and socially irresponsible; it may also cost them dearly, financially speaking.

The University of Johannesburg’s severance of ties with Israel’s Ben Gurion University over the latter’s complicity in human rights violations also broke a taboo and gave the BDS movement its most concrete academic boycott victory to date.

The growing ranks of artists and music groups boycotting Israel has also been quite heartening for the movement. In short, BDS is reaching new horizons and causing serious alarm among Israel’s establishment, as manifested in Israeli minister Ehud Barak’s warning that pressure against Israel threatens to hit “like a glacier, from all corners.”

This September will mark the 20th anniversary of the start of the Israeli-Palestinian “peace process” that is widely recognized as a total failure, by any objective standard. This sham process has served as a cover for Israel’s intensive colonization of Palestinian lands, continued denial of Palestinian basic rights, and gradual ethnic cleaning of Palestinians, while simultaneously giving a false impression of peacemaking. In this context, the BNC welcomes the recognition of a great majority of states around the world that the Palestinian right to statehood and freedom from Israeli occupation are long overdue and should no longer to be held hostage to fanatically biased US “diplomacy” in defense of Israeli expansionism.  However, recognition of Palestinian statehood is clearly insufficient, on its own, in bringing about a real end to Israel’s occupation and colonial rule. Neither will it end Israel’s decades-old system of legalized racial discrimination, which fits the UN definition of apartheid, or allow the millions of Palestinian refugees to return to their homes of origin from which they were violently uprooted and exiled.

Diplomatic recognition must result in protection of the inalienable right to self-determination of the entire Palestinian people represented by a democratized and inclusive PLO that represents not just Palestinians under occupation, but also the the exiled refugees, the majority of the Palestinian people, as well as the discriminated citizens of Israel.. For it to go beyond symbolism, this recognition must be a prelude to effective and sustained sanctions against Israel aimed at bringing about its full compliance with its obligations under international law. As shown in the struggle to end apartheid in South Africa, as well as in the current struggles for freedom and justice in the Arab region, world governments do not turn against a patently illegal and immoral regime of oppression simply on ethical grounds; economic interests and hegemonic power dynamics are far weightier in their considerations. In fact, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s militant and war-mongering speech before the US Congress, coupled with US President Barack Obama’s latest humiliating submission to Israel’s will, shows beyond doubt that anyone still holding on to the hope that Washington is capable or willing to contribute to building a just peace in our region is delusional.

The key lesson learned from South Africa is that, in order for world governments to end their complicity with Israel’s grave and persistent violations of human rights and international law, they must be compelled to do so through mass, well organized grassroots pressure by social movements and other components of civil society. In this context, BDS has proven to be the most potent and promising strategy of international solidarity with the Palestinian people in our struggle for self determination, freedom, justice and equality.

In light of the above, and inspired by the will and the power of the people which have  given rise to the Arab spring, the BNC calls upon people of conscience and  international solidarity groups to proceed with building a mass BDS movement in the US and elsewhere in the world’s most powerful countries before and after September. Only such a mass movement can ensure that whatever diplomatic recognition transpires at the UN in September on Palestinian statehood will advance the rights of the Palestinian people and raise the price of Israel’s occupation, colonialism and apartheid by further isolating it and those complicit in its crimes. A mass solidarity movement that can hold elected officials, especially in the US, accountable to the people, rather than to a Zionist lobby serving Israel’s colonial and belligerent agenda that directly conflicts with the interests of the American and other peoples, is the only hope for a comprehensive and sustainable peace based on justice.

    We could be magnanimous and give Israel south Florida? It would be cheaper to pay existing residents triple their land value, than to fight the endless war against whoknowswhat. Many jews already live in south Florida, and they would be a lot closer to New York City to do their banking. The geography in israel is sparse and near waterless. Florida has geat weather, and they can also farm, have hotels, jewelry stores, banks, pawn shops, money to loan, etc. Bring all their holy sites over to Florida like the london Bridge and Luxor Temple was moved. It’s not impossible, and by plate techtonic standards…Israel is not where it used to be 2000 years ago by a long shot. Everyone would be happy form the overcompensated present Florida land owners, The Jews coming top a much better land and climate, and the Persians-would most likely then just kill each other as usual. A peace branch. If the arabs do not quit attacking the world at that point…nuke em.

      I live up in Canada and I always thought Vancouver Island would be a nice place for a Jewish homeland, natural boundaries, away from the Muslim threat and close to the civilized world.
      Climate might be a problem, a little colder and wetter, but good fishing!

      What would be best is to let the Jewish people fight it out with the Muslims. Stand back and watch the whole middle east become Israeli land and then there would be piece and democracy with rights for all people, not just the Muslims. Read up about how most Israeli muslims would prefer to live under Israeli rule, where freedom OF religion is practiced,not freedom FROM religion as in most of the free world.

    Many Jews that returned to Palestine before May 15, 1948 PURCHASED land or home for themselves, and the Palestinians were glad to sell. They wanted the cash. When Jews owned enough and had the votes, they elected who they wanted. But now the Lamestream media would have us think that the Israeli nation conquered the land. Propaganda is its own virus.
    Watch and see the same tactic in Dearborn and other Muslim populated spots. They buy – then vote.

    We should all be hoping and praying that those surrounding and pushing Israel decide to stand down before things get really ugly. Realizing it is unlikely to happen, it does not stand to be much of a fight when the rock throwing mobs and their supporters finally push too far. It is too bad that the present US administration seems to “throwing gas on the fire” instead of doing the right thing and standing beside an ally. It is a good thing that Israel has the wisdom and constraint that they have shown over time.

    Thanks for the post. I recommend everyone read it. Doesn’t that simply sound horrible? At first, you might think that these MUSLIMS were asking for a fair shake, and looking for peace in the the Middle East, which would usher in a new, more peaceful world.

    But if you read BETWEEN the lines, and if you understand that Muslims only want to kill you and the Israelis (kill everybody who isn’t a lover of Osama Bin Laden really), then you can SEE this is an outright declaration of war against the West, a jihad, a solemn commitment to destroy Israel, kill all Jewish people, all Americans, all Muslims who want peace with the west, all people who don’t worship and kill for God, Allah, whatever.

    Whatever you do, don’t read this propaganda. I’ve already read it and explained it to you. All it says is Muslims want to kill you.

    I cannot believe these people don’t get the hatefull, evilness of what they claim to support. They can’t tell a hate-filled religion of world conquest and muderous desires from a small nation whose people came from where they now live and just want to be left in peace? I absolutely do not ubderstand, and I do not care to anymore. I intend to fight them and their support of evil every chance I can, and I intend to look for chances!

      Just don’t try to make the American govenrnment tied to this insane theocratic genocide (from both sides). The placement of the “Jewish state” after WW2 by the zionists was a mistake. LET IT PLAY OUT

      Israel is on its own.

      No more American $’s support.

      The only solution is to leave israel to its own defenses (which are vast) and let the chips fall where they may.

      American Jews dislike and don’t vote for Christian Conservitives because, in their collective twice-told memory, they remind them of the Christians of Germany in the 30′s/40′s who were the ones so quick to rat them out and put them in the ovens and were the ones who manned the firing squads, etc..
      They also know history and much prefer Andalusia to Auswitz.

      Israeli Jews, in general, are more secular and sane. Talk to them. Go there and find out. I did. Arab Israelis are also sane and secular. Talk to them as well.

      You folks are being fed a line of bullspit!

      If you think god is somehow involved in this matter then step away and let “him” sort it out.

      Israel has much to offer the middle east in terms of secular, progressive freedom….let them do it!!

      Mr Butcher, I stand with Israel because they are the Americans of the Middle East. They have values, principles and their government is one of laws, like our is supposed to be. The Israelis are our natural allies.

      Make no mistake, the Palestinians are the front men for what is an attempt to destroy Israel. The Arabs have no intention of acknowledging the existence of and living peacefully with a Jewish state. Can you abandon Israel to this fate? Do you believe the Muslims will stop there? They hate the West and remember we are the Great Satan to them. They will not suddenly decide they like us so we are in this war whether we like it or not. The very same coalition that is lined up against Israel will be lined up against us. I believe there are many forces in the world that wish to see things aligned very differently. America must stand for her values and her allies now or we will surely fall before long.

The first Arab in Jerusalem send his child with a boo boo in the palm of his hand asking for a hand out. His father cut his hand and sent him to the bus. I gave the 7 year old a bandage and told the others it was a farce, a set up by his father leaning up against a wall nearby. At the next stop an Arab was trying to rob one of the tourist so we did the yelling shoving and shouting till we ran the thief off. We met orthodox Jews we meet crazy Arabs living in Jerusalem. The tourist guide had to change from Israeli to Arab in certain parts of Jerusalem. In Jordan we were not allowed to show our bibles, nor pray, nor sing…the Jordan waiters refused to wait on the single women till a man requested that they be waited on…I found them dancing in a circle laughing about the situation in the kitchen…and I approached the little girly men and got it cleared up, post haste. The arab children thru rocks at us at every stop….

      So how did your visit really go dood?

      I am all for THAT too stop funding the “poor palestinians” too!! So when they burn another American Flag they can be doing it on something else other than American wheat/aid! The US Government can stop the aid because MORE aid is sent to Israel by US Citizens than the US Government sends….

      The thing is, these people are pulling the wool over so much of the eyes of the world; and with the attempted crossing of the Israeli border today, they have the fodder they need for more action and more pressure to heap upon Israel and her people. As Glenn and others have stated, they are further ahead of the ball than we thought.

      Hate to say it but I do think people are judging CA by the whacko’s.. it’s like judging IL by the Politicians.. CA is seems to like playing to the camera’s.. they promote ILLEGAL IMMIGRATION.. teach the students in majority Latino area‘s that AMERICA STOLE the state from the Mexican’s..they just like to stir up controversy..to see their faces on the television.. however most people in CA are just working to pay taxes to support the nuts… most of them don‘t work and they need the tax dollars to promote a bunch of weird idea’s that the rest of the country laughs at them for.. what they need to do is get a job..

      I really don;t see that your place of residence makes you “part of the problem”, when the problem is clearly distorted and corrupt ideology.

      Leftists prove every day that they are not of the main stream, and I bet that many of the teachers in the SEIU don’t agree with this crap.

      If they would look into the history of Israel, from it’s “rebirth” in 1948, they would find that “their problem” with Israel is actually with the U.N.

      And as for the ‘67 borders, Israel was only defending itself as it has in numerous attacks over the years of her existence. Clearly, Israel wanted to put an end to it’s “indefensible” borders when they won them in ‘67.

      Finally, there has NEVER been a Palestine. The land occupied by those calling themselves Palestinians was actually “won” when the Ottoman empire was defeated during WWII.

      Israel isn’t going anywhere. In their attempt to prove their Koran is true they will ultimately prove the bible. Jewish people do not try to prove the bible like the Muslims do because they know God can prove the bible all on his on. Jews don’t have to strap the bible on them and blow up women and children just to prove their book. No one has ever asked Muslim that if allah is god and gave freewill why did he choose them to take it back from others by force? The Koran if obviously the creation of a human and his bigotry.

      Much has been made of the United Methodist Church’s positions on the One Nation Rally last year, anti Israel message and divest from Israel campaign of late. I am a member of this denomination and have learned that the board promulgating these positions does not speak for 85% of our membership. I’ve done my own homework, I find that many mainline denominations are right there with the UMC.

      Why bring it up? If we stand by silently, then our religions will continue to be hijacked by radicals. Sound familiar? Government, Education, Religion. We must bring our weight to bear on these who don’t speak for us. If you are part of these denominations like I am, do your homework and make sure your voice is heard.
      Many are organized to fight and push out Social Justice. Two organizations are the Institute on Religion and Democracy (IRD) and the Confessing Movement within the Methodist Church.

      Read a great article from the IRD on the Boycott, Divest and Sanction movement against Israel. http://www.theird.org/page.aspx?pid=1842. Voice your opinion to your faith leaders and vote with your pocketbook. Insist your donations don’t finance these liberal arms by selecting closed fund in your churches.

      One option is to abandon my church and find another. But “I would rather fight than switch.” I’d no sooner abandon my country, values or convictions. That‘s why we’re all here,

      I agree there are a lot of good people in CAli but by their actions they seem to be going down hill with the bad people…you’d better stand up and be counted real soon or lose cali. The bloody state government, you all seem to want that kind of gov’t which is beyond my understanding. The good, the bad and the ugly eventually get lumped together when all we see is the bad and the ugly…so do something good in Cali…stand up and protest this crap or forever be lumped with the masses that are pushing you in that direction.       Gov Christie shouldn’t run for Pres. He should be appointed to the new GOP WH staff in 2013 in charge of dismantling the NEA and all Teachers Unions, bring Vouchers to ALL states and put teaching directly back in the States hands and totally out of the Fed’s control.
