Beat Again: Supreme Court Rejects Atheist Agitator

The Freedom From Religion Foundation (FFRF), the same group that brought us the indispensable ”DeBaptismal Certificate,“ hit a roadblock Monday when its appeal to omit the phrase ”under god” from the Pledge of Allegiance was denied review by U.S. Supreme Court justices.

Michael Newdow, the Sacramento attorney who represented FFRF and who also sits on the organization’s honorary board, has vowed not to give up his years-long crusade against what he alleges is a violation of separation of church and state.

From San Francisco Chronicle:

A Sacramento atheist’s challenge to the addition of “under God” to the Pledge of Allegiance, which stirred a legal and political frenzy nearly a decade ago, has quietly expired in the U.S. Supreme Court.

The justices denied review Monday, without comment, of Newdow’s appeal on behalf of the Freedom From Religion Foundation and a New Hampshire family. They wanted the court to overturn a ruling in November by a federal appeals court in Boston that the daily schoolroom pledge to “one nation under God” was a patriotic exercise, not an endorsement of religion.

Another appeals court in San Francisco reached a similar conclusion in March 2010. In a 2-1 ruling, the Ninth U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals said the pledge recognized “our founders’ political philosophy that a power greater than the government gives the people their inalienable rights.”

Over a decade’s worth of rejection:

Newdow first challenged the Pledge of Allegiance in 2000 on behalf of his daughter, then a student in a Sacramento-area elementary school. In 2002, the Ninth Circuit ruled that the addition of “under God” was religiously motivated and sent “a message to unbelievers that they are outsiders,” in violation of the constitutional separation of church and state.

Congress reacted furiously, condemning the decision in a resolution that passed with virtually no dissenting votes.

But, as The Blaze’s Billy Hallowell explained:

While Newdow and his cohorts continue to encounter setbacks to their radical and perplexing agenda, their endurance is a powerful force.

In fact, altering the Pledge of Allegiance for U.S. public schools hasn‘t been Newdow’s only push to rid our nation of all references to “god.” In 2008 Newdow sued Chief Justice John G. Roberts and others involved in the inauguration of Barack Obama. The lawsuit was an attempt to thwart Roberts from reciting the phrase “so help me god” during the swearing in ceremony. Newdow also filed a similar lawsuit over George W. Bush’s second inauguration.  So far, he has failed, at least legally, at every turn.

What is perhaps most ironic of all, is that Newdow, an atheist, is founder of the First Atheist Church of True Science (or, F.A.C.T.S) and is also an “ordained minister” of the Universal Life Church who openly admits he believes “atheism is a religion!”

Beat Again: Supreme Court Rejects Atheist Agitator

From F.A.C.T.S’ web site:

Like most religions, FACTS has rituals, although – unlike most religions – none are in any way required. We recommend most of all that each FACTS member pause and reflect at each new moon. How long you pause and what you choose to reflect upon are purely your choices. FACTS also has recommended Church garb, a recommended Church libation, and a recommended closing hymn for each congregational meeting.

In the end, I guess FACTS can be stranger than fiction…

This may be a lil off topic but bear with me and I promise I’ll try to tie it in. Everyone knows that there is deep symbology imbedded in our (US) currency. Have you looked closely at the head side of the new state quarters? Why change the head side? Compare an old quarter to a new state quarter and you will see what I mean. The word “Liberty” is no longer on top, it has been pushed aside (to the left) by “The United States Of America”. The words “In God We Trust” are diminshed (smaller font) and are no longer in front of Washington but instead behind him. So the Symbology on our new quarter shows The United States of America pushing Liberty aside, specifically to the left and has our first president turning his back on trust in God. Very telling isn’t it?

Oh yes, Madeline O’Hair has an effect on me all right.
Her cut up body buried in a cornfield after being murdered by her like minded buddies makes an impression on me every time I think of crop fertilizer.
Do you also worship crop fertilizer ?
And the flippant usage of the old names that were discarded for the monotheistic palate is an example of an unnatural guilt impulse toward oneself.
Education is often cited as a forerunner to a rational view of the world. Since education has been relegated to the socialist agenda today, it’s easy to see why the appearance of inspired leaders is at a standstill. Lack of guidance at home and in the schools is a harbinger of missteps in future life.
The religion of rejection that is atheism does not register as a valid counterpoint to discussion of monotheism VS pantheon of various planetary deities. AKA, Jupiter, Ra or the corn fertilizer goddess, Madeline O’Hair. Using Zeus or Horus betrays a deep seated inward angst that divides the mind and turns the guilt complex outward to relieve the inward unconscious self deprecation and locate a suitable target for ridicule. Good luck boys.

      Vennoye,

In this case you are casting your pearls before swine.

See Liberal Atheist Non-Thinker is not actually an atheist. A true atheist could care less what people actually believed. No, LACT actually hates God. If this wasn’t the case, he could really care less about what you, I, or anyone else believed, and wouldn’t be posting here…at least in this manner. You can‘t hate something that doesn’t exist, and LACT portrays his hate for his own creator quite vividly.

Most likely LACT hates God due to things that occurred in his childhood. Maybe he was abused, molested, or ostracized. It is possible his parents divorced and he was either fatherless or motherless for his childhood. Many like him have encountered people claiming to be Christians, but were Christian in name only and did lead a spirit filled life.

Best thing you can do is just pray that the Lord changes his heart.

Atheists can’t combat Daniel 9:24-26. These scriptures in the book of Daniel, which is in the Septuagint (translated in 300 BC), states the exact date Jesus rode a donkey into Jerusalem, and accurately prophesied his death.

Those that don’t worship God, worship satan and they are his followers. Proof of God’s existence abounds – not only for people who have heard His Voice, but for those that have experienced His miracles. When one departs from biblical Truth, a pathway is taken that weakens his faith in God. ” All else is vanity,” as the Apostle Paul so succinctly explains. God is merely providing a path , so that if one would choose, then he could to be with Him for an eternity.

      You are half right Tasmanianwabbit.
There are two kinds of atheism floating around out there. There are the non-believers like me, who just do not believe in any god, but really do not know if any god exists or not. For us, it does not matter what anyone believes as long as it doesn’t harm us or forces us to believe in their god.
The other kind are the atheists who believe that no god exists. There is anger behind their beliefs: the more they feel betrayed by religion, the angrier they are and the more likely they will act. Newdow seems to be that guy. He is just looking for purpose to his life, and he thinks he has found it.
Belief can bring on such behavior, which is why I am a non-believer. I do not fight for a cause, I let bygones be bygones, and think that your religious freedom stops at my property line.

I actually agree with Newdow – Atheism is a religion and if the USA expunges G-d from public life, they are establishing a religion.

To believe in a creator, G-d, as opposed to a diety (YHWH,Jesus,Buddah,Allah) is not a religion.

It really comes down to one‘s understanding of our country’s founding and why those words would ultimately find their way into our flag’s pledge.

Our founders realized that either you were given ‘rights’ by man, or you were given rights by God.

If you were given rights by man (government), then man could take away those rights if given the chance or the reason. We‘ve seen this throughout history with dictatorial regime’s. Governments the world over have made slaves of millions because they dictated what, if any, rights their subjects could have.

If, on the other hand, your rights did not come from man, then man would not be able to take those rights away. They are God-given, not man-given, after all.

This is why it is extremely important that we do not remove ‘God’ as our nations main building-block. You don’t necessarily have to believe in God, but you better believe in “one nation, under, God”.

I would think that any reasonable person who wants to live in a civil society would want to believe in, say, the principles found in the The Ten Commandments. If you refuse to believe in God, then explain to me why you would not want to at least believe in those ten principles.

The ugly truth is that without God, everything goes out the window – morality, reason; all of it. Because without God there is no use for any of it; if you cease to exist when you die, then what’s the point of life anyway??? It’s the one question to which no atheist has a credible answer.

The atheist cannot stand God because he wants no accounting for his behavior – man rejects God in order to make the world safe for sinning…..

Then we would see how “committed “ to his cause he would be!

Right-o CEMERIUS, not in the Constitution. And the whole idea of “separation of church and state” was meant to protect the churches’ freedoms.

      @cemerius – exactly!!

The constitution PROTECTS RELIGIONS – FROM THE GOVT!
It does not protect INDIVIDUALS from RELIGION.

      His hate blinds him.

I, for one, will pray for him.

Aaron in Polk County, my teens do. They even know the meaning of the individual words. Kids today are being indoctrinated to accept global governance in the future. We’ll be back to having taxation without representation again. Our own congress doesn’t even listen to their constituents; there’s no way a global government will give a rip about what we say. They happily take our tax money, that’s for sure.

Yep! And Hitler was a vegan and pagan ecologist and attempted to twist Lutheranism into the Reichkirke so they had an “official religion” that would look more acceptable to the rest of the world.
How about some large churches and synagogues in that area get a few of their lawyers together and sue the pants off this dipstick for denying their constitutional rights of worship! Maybe some veteran groups could join in as well.

I never understood why any self proclaimed atheist ( I don’t believe they really exist, because to be a true atheist, one needs the omniscience required to know for a fact no God exists, which is in itself a divine trait) is not content to simply dismiss God and go about their business. I used to consider myself an atheist, until I met Jesus in 1983, but I never felt compelled to force everyone else to conform to my belief system. The irony of the need for some of these people to exert control and authority over others by force is apparently lost on them. I guess it’s true what Limbaugh says: progressivism and liberalism is where everyone is equally miserable.

you would think that an attorney would be smart enough to understand the law and constitution. now where does the constitution say anything about seperation of church and state. it only says the government can establish a religion or interfere with it (paraphrased). the term seperation of church and state came from a supreme court gudge that had a personal beef with the catholic church.

It is so nice to see the hand of God at work when these opponents of free speech and religious expression are thwarted across the board. Let them have the right to express their own beliefs or denial of such in their lives, and let others express and hold their own without trying to cram it down others throats at the same time.

The Pledge of Allegiance is a sick joke.

It’s all about brainwashing the young! I have five children … all honor roll kids, all with tons of extracurricular activities … and I refuse to let them have anything to do with this.

Nationalism is a cancer, and most evangelical conservatives are eaten up with it.

Not my kids. Heck no! Brainwash your own all day long. Make them slaves to your superstitious religion. But my children will be taught critical thinking. Like the original FOUNDERS!

This guy is an idiot and so are all the others who have not read the real intent of this statement. It prevents the government from establishing a one state religion and is based in freedom of religion. So if you think about it, these idiots are trying to abolish the freedom of religion amendment and make a one state religion. How ironic. When is someone in our government going to have this debate. This guy will win in the end especially when we continue to let progressives hold offices who elect progressive judges.
