Beck & Family Harassed During Outdoor Movie Night in NYC Park

There are those who love freedom of expression, as long as it’s not conservatives who are doing the expressing. Just ask Glenn Beck. On radio Tuesday, he told the stunning story of how he and his family were harassed during an outdoor movie in New York City’s Bryant Park.
For those unfamiliar with Bryant Park, it hosts weekly showings of classic films during the summer months. Attendees bring blankets and picnic dinners and sprawl out on the park’s great lawn while watching the films on a giant screen.
As Beck explained, he attended Monday night‘s public showing of Alfred Hitchcock’s “The 39 Steps” with his wife and daughter. During the film, he was ridiculed, had someone “kick a cup” of wine on his wife and on his blanket, and even witnessed another person stand up and yell, “We hate conservatives here!”
“These people were some of the most hateful people I have ever seen,” Beck said. “All I wanted to do is go out on a blanket with my family and have dinner in the afternoon sun and sit around Americans, not like-minded Americans, and just watch a movie in the park. And last night at about‑‑ when the movie was just about over, my wife and I got out because it was hostile.”
When Beck left near the end of the movie, the crowd applauded.
“I don’t know what kind of victory you thought you won,” Beck said on radio in response, and later added, “I swear to you I think if I would have suggested, and I almost did, wow, does anybody have a rope, because there’s a tree here, you could just lynch me. And I think there would have been a couple in the crowd that would have.”
Despite the obvious hurtful elements of the story, Beck used it as an opportunity to deliver a message to conservatives:
All through the evening, I wanted to say to you today, please, please, please don’t ever treat anybody like that. If Van Jones comes and sits next to you, please don’t treat anybody like that, and then I realized I don’t have to say that to you. I was there at 8/28. I saw when people were pointing their finger in your face and calling you a racist, setting you up, egging you on, I saw how you reacted. I don’t have to tell you that.
Later in the evening, he admitted he had to call his daughter and console her because she was so distraught.

Being divisive and accusing the President of being a racist and mocking his daughter about the oil disaster in the gulf was way over the line and people will never forget that, Fox and it‘s advertisers didn’t and it ultimately led to his demise. Beck realizes this and his apology was just never accepted.

What is the true definition of a hate crime? Are hate crimes only valid if the victims are a select group of people? Doesn’t that further support the idea that the excluded parties are being discriminated against? It’s time we call out those organizations that are discriminating based on political ideology. EVERYONE should have the right to free speech, ESPECIALLY those who you disagree with. I’m sorry that this happened to Glenn and his family. When did America get to the point where you can go out in public if you have a specific point of view and not another?

I recently attended the Rightonline conference in Minneapolis and was subjected to intolerance of some on the left attending the Netroots conference across the street from our venue. Sitting outside enjoying a breath of fresh air with three or four other ladies, we became surrounded by four college age punks. One of the boys, smelling of liquor, without instigation, got in my face and called me and the other ladies “White Fascists”. I chose to not confront him in his drunken state but held my space. One of the ladies from NY got into a screaming match with the man, which seemed to be just what he wanted. I decided to approach the other three men, singling out the weakest looking of the three for a civil conversation and exchange of ideas. My goal was to distract the three others and keep a hostile situation from turning violent. It worked as the young man and I had a reasonable conversation regarding our differing views. He was a member of the Communist party and shared a lot about the goals and purpose of his party. I respectfully expressed my own objections to his beliefs, but did so in a non confrontational manner. The conversation remained civil and eventually the three boys took their hostile friend on to go to another bar.

A group of other orange lanyards having witnessed the verbal attack of their group member on us, we were wearing green lanyards, it was easy to determine who belonged to which group, did nothing to deter the hate filled man. I decided to approach them after the guy was escorted away by his buddies. My intent remained civil and I once again exchanged in a calm and unassuming fashion differing view points.
I think for the most part both sides, excluding the fringe groups on each side, are Americans and do love our country and want what is best for ours and our children’s future. Of course, we each have conflicting ideologies and therein lies the problem. Lest we forget, Republican and Democrat soldiers both died defending our freedom. Neither ideology can solely make claim to blood spilled but surely joined forces defending our nation.
There must be a way we can bridge the gap and find a way to do what is best for our country together. I don’t have the answers. I just want to seek a way. Instead of blasting the left on this blog, can we please discuss ideas of how we bring our country together? I am open for rational discussion. Are any of you?

I don’t agree with Beck on much but I do respect his right to express himself (and vicariously all his supporters.) Mobs of any stripe are repelant to human dignity.

Of course, that person didn’t have enough class to respect his privacy by simply acknowledging him (if they were a fan) or ignoring him (if they were not a fan) and minding their own business. Nope. They had to stage a “scene”. Okay, fools, you got away with it and the Beck family left before the end of the movie to applause. And now everyone across the nation and probably around the world knows that people who attend these outdoor events are classless, mannerless, rude idiots. Aren’t you all so proud of yourselves?
Now, here’s the question….are those who are local and conservatives going to come out in force at the next movie? Pack the place. Be polite, but pack the place. I’d be there, but I live too far away.

You said of those people who hurt you and they are mostly “good” people…I beg to differ, because the Bible says that there is none good, no not one, (Rom. 3). We are really capable of some really nasty things, because we are all born into sin. We all have this sinful nature. We‘ve all broken God’s commandments and when we stand before a holy and Just God, we all would be guilty and deserve hell..BUT, good news: Jesus died on a cross for our sins and the punishment that we deserve, Jesus took upon Himself, so that when we repent and turn away from our sins and turn to Jesus for the forgiveness of our sins and put our faith and trust in Him, then we can find forgiveness of sins and have eternal life in Jesus. Call out to God in prayer for mercy.

Just a quick FYI -saw your article on Mr. Beck and his numerous FALSE claims about the way that he was treated at Bryant Park last night. Myself and several of my friends were seated immediately behind Mr. Beck & co (have pictures) and I can tell you that while the crowd was certainly not *thrilled* that he had shown up, his family was left completely alone, and for the most part he was too. Conversely, it was his security detail (two body guards) that seemed to be unnecessarily prickly with the crowd, scolding myself and my friends for acrobatics and other harmless activities taking place well before the movie started, and contributing to a considerably less relaxed atmosphere than is typically experienced during BPMN (I’ve been going for about six years now).
It was my friend that spilled the glass of wine on Tanya -and I can assure you that it was a complete accident. A happy one, to be sure, but nonetheless a complete and utter accident. As soon as the wine spilled (and I question how Tanya became soaked from a half glass of wine) apologies were made and my friends pretty much scrambled to give Tanya & co napkins -no doubt aware that it would look terrible and that their actions could be perceived as purposeful. No words were exchanged after that, as I think that it became pretty clear to Beck & co that my friends and I were (cont)

This is great because I’d have to carve out a hour to watch, now I can work on my computer files, watch and not miss a beat. I think I’ll look into getting HGTV and my favor sports teams on line and then probably jettison the Cable altogether! We can get all move movies known to man on Netflix now..easy to connect to the big screens… I mean it…we can’t see it all yet, but THIS IS THE NEW AGE of communication!!!
