Beck Interviews Mayor of ‘Mayberry’ After City Board Allegedly Blasts His Politics

The mayor of a small North Carolina town is hoping Glenn Beck will bring his new clothing line to her town, after Beck issued a call looking for an American community to be the home for his 1791 line.
However, some of the town‘s residents reportedly aren’t sold on the idea, due to Beck’s conservative views.
In a video that aired on GBTV to promote the project, Beck said: “I believe that somewhere out there there is a town searching for a second chance.” The purpose of 1791 — named after the year the Bill of Rights was adopted — is to raise money for his new charity, Mercury One, and to invest in America by offering people jobs.
Mount Airy Mayor Deborah Cochran and other residents responded, emailing Beck hoping he would select their town — the birthplace of Andy Griffith and the model for the fictional town of Mayberry.
“Please consider our town for the Mercury One Project,” Cochran wrote, according to the Mount Airy News. “We have several empty manufacturing plants.”
Preliminary research suggests the clothing line could employ up to 1,000 people in the town that has been badly hit since clothing manufacturing jobs moved overseas, the Mount Airy News reported.
But Cochran has experienced pushback from some of the town‘s inhabitants due to Beck’s politics. A source told the Mount Airy News that the city board of commissioners “declined to be publicly involved in supporting this” because of what was described as Beck’s controversial, ultra-conservative leanings.
On the air Friday, Beck said he was perturbed by the board’s gripe with his political views.
“I won’t do anything in a city where you are going to make everything about politics. Forget it,” Beck said. “I’m really not interested in working around a bunch of people who might consider job creation a partisan event.”
Cochran called in to the show a few moments later to state her case for making Mount Airy the home 1791, telling Beck her town relied heavily on the textile industry and recalled how her family has personally been affected by mill closings.
She said her town’s citizens were hardworking people who just want a chance.
“These people here are the best on the planet,” Cochran said. “My main concern is these people here who are out of work.”
She also had a different take on the city board that you can hear in the entire conversation below:

Posted on August 5, 2011 at 4:51pmLoriann,
Large cities in Texas are a mixture of conservative and liberal. Sections of the cities that are mostly minorities are liberal. They are minority because that’s where they choose to live, just like that’s where they choose to go to church. Many of them do not want to go to church with whitey, but whites on the other hand would and do welcome them in their churches. It’s my understanding Beck is not actually in Dallas, but in an affluent suburb that’s also close to Ft.Worth.

Posted on August 5, 2011 at 9:43pmBeck will get that response wherever he goes. As bad as the jobless rate is in any given town, his opinions and statements just don’t play well enough for him to locate there, even if he brings jobs. That’s the effect Beck has on the average person, especially those in poverty. He didn’t get any good local press from his “charity event” in Wilmington Ohio either.
I’m happy if Glenn is to provide jobs for people. But Glenn Beck is no Paul Newman, that’s for sure. Paul Newman gave, and his organization still gives every single penny to charities. They’ve given more than 300 million dollars to charities so far. You probably don’t know this but Paul Newman was a liberal. Why don’t you know that? Because he didn’t loudly, or even softly proclaim what a philanthropist he was. He lived his own life, and gave without fanfare. And you know what? Nobody ever turned down his offer to set up a business in their town or to sell his products.

What does this have to do with newman? This is the problem with libs. They obviously can’t grasp the fact that this is America. People can give to charity of their free will. Someone else will say it’s not enough. Anyone who would oppose a man bringing life to their lifeless town is an idiot and should be exposed as that. Libs hate people who are successful. It would be much better for all these towns if they just stayed on the govt dole right?
If the sight of factory graveyards sends a thrill up your leg, you’re a lib.
If you’d rather see people humiliated by not earning for their family, you’re a lib.
If you oppose capitalism and empowerment of the American people, you’re a lib.
Utter selfishness. Disgusting dedication to social destruction. Liberal opposition to private property and commercial rights. Attacks on private citizens by tyrannical govt.
Yeah, this is what you lefties see when you look in the mirror. Be proud.

Posted on August 6, 2011 at 11:50amSLAPTHELEFT, I don’t the you characterized liberalism very well, but no matter. The fact is the Beck has an image problem which is not the fault of “the libs” it’s his own fault. He has attacked virtually every group of any kind in the world, and that comes with consequences.
That’s why all but the most obscure companies refused to have their brand associated Beck and refused to advertise on his show. That’s why Beck is no longer at FOX. That‘s why the people of Wilmington Ohio won’t be inviting him back to any more “charity events” and that‘s why this town didn’t want to be associated with him.
Beck makes a living frightening one group (yours) and offending everyone else in the world. That has consequences.
