Beck is Back: What The Media is Saying About GBTV

Media outlets have been buzzing about the launch of GBTV this week and the consensus is in: Glenn Beck is back, and he’s big. Below, The Blaze has pulled a sample of what they’re saying:
When someone says ‘future of media’ is the first person who jumps to mind Glenn Beck? No? Maybe he should be.
Beck launched his new subscription only GBTV show on Monday night. Ahead of the launch the Wall Street Journal reported that 230,000 people had already subscribed for the show at $9.95/month, which among other things put Beck’s company on track to pull in $20 million this year (that’s $17 million more than Beck’s contract at Fox News).
It also meant that Beck had attracted more subscribers to his Internet network than Oprah had attracted viewers to her television network in June (156,000).
Not a bad way to start.
[...]
Perhaps not surprisingly for a man who held a rally on the National Mall in August, Beck is aiming big.
“We view GBTV as Netflix in a way, as HBO in way,” said Beck. “People know when you go to HBO it’s good quality. My audience is loyal because they don‘t necessarily know what I’m going to do, but they know it will be worth their time, I try not to waste their time, and it will be good quality.”
The show itself looked nearly identical to Beck’s FNC program, though there were some technical hiccups along the way, including a TelePrompTer issue at the end of comedian Brian Sack’s segment. Nonetheless, the show did not feel like a program on the internet. That was an intentional decision, Beck says:
“My first goal was to put on a show and have people say, ‘oh, that is not a webcast,’” he says. “[Fox News and CNN have] the resources of Murdoch and Turner, we can get into the ballpark of that on day one. Let us just stabilize this system, as you saw in the end with Brian, we are pushing the envelope and doing things we shouldn’t be doing right now. We have a lot to work out.”
“We are trying to deliver television over the internet, not internet television,” [Mercury Radio Arts President Chris] Balfe added.
[...]
GBTV is ultimately a perpetual work-in-progress, with Beck and Balfe looking to add interactive elements as time goes on. As Beck told us in his studio, while it is his baby, his hope is that GBTV can move beyond him.
“I think both of our aspirations right now are that GBTV becomes like ESPN where no one remembers what the letters mean,” Balfe says.
“We‘re pushing the envelope and doing things that we shouldn’t be doing right now,” Beck said. “We have a lot to work out. Give us six months and we‘ll change the way it’s consumed.”
Beck vowed he would shake things up once viewers are comfortable watching his show on a laptop or iPad. He doesn’t want the program to be a passive experience.
If viewers are unsure about a topic Beck is discussing on the show — for instance, QE3, a potential third round of quantitative easing by the Federal Reserve — they might be able to click words on the on-screen chalkboard to open up windows offering additional information. Viewers could also then find past Beck monologues on QE3, ranging from the most basic explanation to more advanced discussion allowing them to “go past the show.”
Beck also plans to start using Skype during the show to increase viewer interaction.“We just want people to be comfortable and say, ‘I know what this is,’” Beck said, referring to the network’s early focus. “Then we’ll introduce piece by piece the different things that say, ‘Oh wait, this is something entirely different. This is not television.’”
Last night, Beck opened his show by discussing the verdict in the trial of a man accused of killing an entire Israeli family and then segued into 110 minutes of warning his audience that the world was going to collapse and capitalists would be scapegoated. Not exactly the perfect material for a comedian to follow. Having interned on a televised comedy talk show before, I know just how much thought is put into audience warm up and, despite Sack having a couple of very devoted fans in the Beck’s small studio audience, I wondered if this was really the best way to preview the show.
Of course, this crystallizes what makes the whole endeavor so fascinating. Right now, in most people’s eyes, GBTV is still, literally, “Glenn Beck Television.” And, while they clearly have a number of plans for the network’s centerpiece show (Beck spent a lot of time talking up a number of upcoming technological innovations dealing with host/audience interactivity), perhaps the biggest thing to watch for is whether or not they can successfully launch these disparate shows.
Going by Balfe’s ESPN comparison, it’s interesting that the best possible thing right now for Beck would be for him to fade into the background.
And HuffPost’s Gene Marks, a business management columnist who describes himself as “not a fan…[but] not a detractor either“ said the launch made Beck ”the ultimate small business guy:”
Beck, like many entrepreneurs, has a thick skin. He takes his lumps. He has his opinions. And some of them are … well … kind of out there. But he never seems to really lose his cool. This is also a trait of successful business people. Men and women startup their companies because they’re convinced that their ideas are good. These same people get turned down, and in often cases mocked, by potential investors who disagree with the potential of their ideas. We‘ve all heard the stories of the entrepreneur who’s been turned down 87 times before finally getting that financing and then building a billion-dollar company. It’s all about having that thick skin, taking criticism professionally, never losing your cool, moving forward with your passion and not letting the haters get you down. Agree or disagree with Beck, this is exactly what he does. Any small business owner can appreciate that.
Not bad. It seems the phrase the network has been using — “The network of tomorrow, a day early” — is spot on.

Posted on September 15, 2011 at 2:23pmYou know why I and I believe a lot of people watch Glenn and will follow to GBTV? It’s because we actually Learn something.
Report Post »I grew up in Chicago in the late 80′s where my 6th grade teacher actually said her favorite president was Woodrow Wilson. So, obviously, I got crap for history education. Glenn teaches me the history I wish I had learned back then and he makes in entertaining. I find myself wanting to learn more after the segment is over.
That’s a big reason I believe Glenn will be successful and will continue to attract people to his new network.

Unemployed for over 3 yrs. not even $5 month fits my budget right now. (Praying for economy to return so even disabled people can find employment.) All of Glenn I get is his radio show, and what Blaze gives, with such slow internet it sometimes takes over an hr to load a clip. Still, with Glenn’s teaching, I can almost finger the exact year my small school education turned from teaching true history, to indoctrination. Listening to him, I’ve been able to remember the things I learned in the 1st 5 yrs of school before history became Social Studies, and reading, ” Literature!“ I remember a teacher laughing with us at the ridiculousness of the ”Scopes Monkey Trial”, and am just realizing that was the last year she was in the school system. 2 yrs later we found it necessary to learn all the rot that comes with evolution to prepare us for Biology!
It was indeed a “slippery slope” and we went down it in a frenzy in the late 50‘s and all through the 60’s! May God forgive us for what we did to our kids & grandkids instead of standing tall & catching up the torch thrown from “Flanders Fields”!

Posted on September 15, 2011 at 9:25pmI can’t stand that Glenn chooses to hate on Ron Paul so much…
Ron is a kind, thoughtful person with more integrity than ANYONE in, any form of, the media.
Plus he has a photographic memory and knows more about history than most people combined.
He’s probably the most realistic, down to earth, person i’ve ever heard, right along with John Stossle.
… But, it is easy to not like Ron when you ignore facts, facts like blowback, like how much debt we create for every dollar we print, like how all these federal regulations are just creating national slavery, like how you can’t quit your job because your healthcare is tied to your employeer instead of being paid for by you (because what idiot doesn’t save for an emergency? seriously… if you STILL don’t back up your sensitive data, images, etc… you are a freaking moron and get what you deserve… seriously.. folks… take some responsibility.)
If you don’t believe in “To each their own” along with “If it neither picks my pocket nor breaks my leg…” then, you are no Christian and you definately are not an America at heart.
*** i’m not saying you have to be both… i just know that Christians today are supposed to be kind, understanding, forgiving people. not jealous, spiteful, control freaks… leave that to the politicians out there. And, America was founded on the idea that everyone can be who they are and worship who/whatever they wish as long as they don’t infringe on anyone elses rights to do the

Posted on September 16, 2011 at 1:07amIt’s so hilarious for those of us that get it, to watch the other pundits squirm around about attempt to shoot holes in Glenn’s game. The only “green” the liberals are successful at is being green with envy. It magnifies with every lame article and liberal news announcement from the left. I laugh out loud watching and reading them. It’s so rewarding knowing that they are freaking out at the effect Glenn is having.

Posted on September 16, 2011 at 2:27amI loved watching Glenn Beck on TV. But I will not be a member of GBTV. Why? Because I believe one of the biggest problems with America is greed and I believe GBTV is Glenn’s avenue to that original sin. I already pay for cable TV, which allowed me to watch GB on TV. When I found out he was moving away from that, and then saw the cost, my conclusion was that he was clearly doing this for more money. I will not be a member to that, so I will have to rely on The Blaze now. For demographics: I am a 51 year old white male, Disabled Veteran, and a small business owner.

We dumped fox news along with the $900.00 dollar a year dish network due to the cost and the Bush progressives on every fox show bashing the American grass roots tea party. Its been replaced by a digital antenna in the attic for $50 bucks that gives us 31 channels in HD for free and a Roku box for $99.99 that delivers GBTV in full HD. It is such a liberating feeling to finally get rid of fox and the dish and send a message that in this house we wont pay you to dump your anti-american garbage here.

HELL, if I didn’t have the income to pay for the subscription, I would sell TEN of my DVD‘s for a dollar each to suck it up and pay for a month’s worth of Glenn’s program.

Posted on September 15, 2011 at 2:17pmI got the ROKU hook up to watch on a HDTV. I’m happy with it. The 1080P looks good but, certainly not Bluray quality, no big deal. I‘m very satisfied with it and it’s a one time purchase with a lot more than GBTV on it. The first couple of shows felt like they had a one hour show that they just stretched to 2 hours with comments from the web and Twitter and other fluff. By the third show it was back to the old Glenn Beck show, in other words, it flew by. As innovative as he and his team are, I bet in month it will be great. The lame comedian who gets only a bit of sympathy laughter from the audience is hard to watch. I kind of feel sorry for the guy, I keep waiting for the gong.

Posted on September 15, 2011 at 7:30pmYea, but I sure would like to be able to see the previous shows archived on Roku, they have all his radio shows and Israel stuff, so what’s the deal. At this point you can only watch the day’s show on the same day and then it disappears into oblivian, so if you happened to miss one, you can’t watch it on demand on Roku, just the computer, which kinda sucks because I got the Roku so I didn’t have to watch it on the computer, and I’m not always home between 5 and 7 and sometimes want to catch it the next day, can’t do that. I hope I didn’t waste the $100 I paid for the Roku after Glenn recommended it.

That is too much for me for anyone’s TV Show. I wish Beck well. I hope he makes millions, I just am not contributing.

Posted on September 15, 2011 at 2:36pmGo to GBTV.com… there is the $99 plan and the $49 plan. I actually sprung for the $99 plan and I am about as cheap a person as you’ll meet. However, when I feel I “need” something, I’ll pay for it. I do have cable ($160 per month) and watch the Phillies and the occasional Fox news. However, I really felt that I missing out on a lot since Glenn went off of FOX. I believe it is worth giving him the money and support him and his efforts.

Posted on September 16, 2011 at 12:19amIf Soros chooses to buy memberships, that is to Glenn’s benefit – that doesn’t mean that Glenn has to tow any line with him! As he said on his first show – if you like him – great, if you don’t – cancel the subscription. Personally, I am enjoying his shows!
By the way, Glenn is underwritten by the people he has commercials for, he doesn‘t have to take anything from people that he doesn’t want to support his show.

Posted on September 15, 2011 at 2:01pmHey Stoic, if you’re sincere and in a tough spot, I’d gladly “Gift” you a subscription. They tell me they’re not ready for that yet, I’ve tried.

Yes I am, and appreciate the offer.
My wife and I agreed NO unessential expenses. In her eyes GBTV is nonessential and I respect that.
We took Glenn’s advice two years ago and made ourselves financially small. I am glad we did as I lost my job due to O’care. We get by, the bills are paid, but there is very little left. We are EXTREMELY GRATEFUL that we can pay our mortgage and are continually cutting costs.
A hint for ANYONE reading this look at your insurance policies and get quotes. We cut our combined insurance costs by almost 50% and increased our coverage at the same time. I am not going to name companies, just do the comparisons. You will most likely be amazed.

Posted on September 15, 2011 at 4:18pmI have been a member 1 and 1/2 years, going from GB Extreme to GBTV+ member. I love the show and all the “extras” I get. I gave my sister a membership for Christmas, she loves it. She does not have pay for TV, nor does she want it. She uses GBTV for educational material for her grandsons and granddaughters. Beck U is a great resource. $5.00 a month is a pittance for what you get.

Posted on September 15, 2011 at 1:38pmI am a subscriber and Beck is fulfilling his statement that it’s a great show. He is still teaching us what the real truth is about history. This is what we need to know. But he proves what he says, not just tell us something and let it go at that. Which makes all the difference in his show and the others. He proves what he says.
