Beck Blasts Boehner After Rep. Walsh Says House Members Banned From Israel Event

Glenn Beck had some strong words for House Speaker John Boehner (R-Ohio) Thursday after Rep. Joe Walsh said a group of congressmen that wanted to attend next week’s Restoring Courage event in Israel were barred from doing so by the House Ethics Committee.

Speaking on Beck’s radio program, the Illinois Republican said the International Israel Allies Caucus Foundation was going to sponsor a mission for several representatives to go to Israel, meet with officials and join Beck at the event.

“Lo and behold, ethics yesterday said — did not approve the trip,” Walsh said. “They said your portion of the fact-finding mission had the appearance of a political event, they told me. They said there wasn’t enough meeting time built into the schedule and they identified the Israeli Allies Caucus Foundation as a lobbying group currently lobbying Congress on legislation when, in fact, they’re a 501(c)3 charity.”*

When reached by phone, Dan Schwager, staff director and chief counsel for the House Ethics Committee told The Blaze confidentiality barred him from discussing the matter.

“We are not permitted to speak about individual matters so I cannot address any of those allegations,” Schwager said.

On the air, Beck said he‘d heard it was Boehner’s office that was not approving members of Congress to attend the event, with 35 representatives at one point planning to attend before being told they’d been rejected by the House and would have to self-fund the trip if they wanted to go.

Beck wondered whether the congressmen were barred because “it is me as someone who holds the Republicans’ feet to the fire” or as retribution for voting against the debt ceiling deal.

“If that‘s what’s letting Speaker Boehner stand in the way of people coming to Israel at this critical time — I‘m just not sure what Speaker Boehner had in mind there but it’s an interesting policy,” he said.

After he finished speaking with Walsh, Beck turned his next comments directly to Boehner:

“This has been going on now for a couple of weeks and I haven’t said anything because I wanted it to play out in the system, but Speaker Boehner, you should be ashamed of yourself. The Republican Party should be ashamed of themselves. They don’t have to attend my event. Let them come to our biggest ally and the only friend we still have in the Middle East in their hour of need. They don’t have to attend my event, in fact I’ll ban them, does that make you happy? Let Congress come here. You should be ashamed of yourself for playing politics, and that’s what it is Boehner, and you know it.

“There are so many people, good people, that are in the Republican Party trying to fight for common sense values, trying to hold some semblance of the line of America, trying to hold together what little credibility we have overseas, but the Republicans would much rather punish ‘bad Republicans’. Good for you, Speaker Boehner, good for you.”

*Beck noted on radio that those Congressman who were planning on coming were going to pay for the trip out of their own pocket.

    This is just sickening. Fine – they don‘t go to GB’s event. But there is plenty of reason for them to go to Israel. John Boener is doing little more than acting like a bully and throwing a tantrum. Gross.

    If we make it – 2012 is going to be VERY interesting.

      They CAN go. They just have to pay for it themselves. I have no problem with that. They are looking for free travel and accomadations by arranging a phony meeting which is exactly what is wrong in DC. They expect to be treated to their travel expenses by the tax payers.

      I have no problem with them paying their own way. We as conservatives must lead by example, after all, haven’t we been griping about government spending sprees on our dime. I would LOVE to see them go and back Glenn up, but do so on their own. I would LOVE to be there, but I can’t afford it, so I certainly can’t afford to send others…

      We don‘t know Boehner’s reasons, but he is right to not use our money to pay for them. Glenn, I usually agree with you, on this you are wrong. To say you will ban them is ridiculous and is an insult to the intelligence of your audience. The congress should pay for themselves if they want to go to your event.

      There’s a huge difference between Speaker Boehner telling free American citizens they are banned from going and telling them you can go but you have to pay your own way.
      Am I missing something Glenn?
      These “sponsored missions”, are the problem.

      Quit freaking yourself out.

      If I am wrong and Boehner and the Ethics office is banning American citizens from this event, then they can kiss my….YOWZER!!!

      The taxpayers should not pay for them to go, unless the govt. also pays for everyone in the county that wants to go, with the same 1st class travel, motel and food that the rep. would have gotten. Let them pay their own way if they want to go.

I completely back Israel and Beck on this tour, but I do not endorse government leaders going on our dime because this could very well back fire for private demonstrations that we don’t agree with. We can’t pick and choose, that’s not how America should be run. Keep in mind there are politicians who support the very people we are trying to keep out of our Government, should we pay for their trips as well?

      This IS a lobbying group – period – not a “Charity” of any kind even if they are a legal non-profit.

      Many of you seem to be commenting without watching the video – Glenn is saying to let them go to Israel, and skip his event. The importance of the trip is having our Republican congressman speak with Israeli leadership, to let them know we have thier back, regardless of what our POTUS says and does.

      Look, 95% (or more) of these congressional trips are vacations to exotic locations… setting up fake meetings and fact finding missions so that they and thier firends can party on the taxpayer’s dime. By all means, cut out these wasteful trips. But we need to be repairing our strained ties with our longtime allies. We need to send the leaders WE trust to Israel, UK, Saudi Arabia, and any other nations who have sat by and watched Obama dismiss them (or harm them) the past 2 years.

      When Obama is gone, we will need to seriously mend fences, so why not start right now. I’m willing to pay for congressional trips if they are legitimate. Obama had his “Apologizing for America” tour, it‘s time to start the GOP’s “Apologizing for Barry” tour.

      To clarify, John Boehner asked the members to pay for it out of their own pockets, which is okay. But, once they said they had the money to pay for the trip to Israel, Boehner refused to let them go, which is what is wrong. Period. If they have the money, they should be able to go. So, the bottom line is Boehner is just playing the typical political game in Washington and is WRONG.

      They should show some back bone.

      If it is about refusing to spend money for a group of our representatives on a fact-finding trip to our only ally in the Middle East as a matter of their security and OUR security, then Boehner is being a political hack.

      Pretty obvious that all you Republican-Party-Politics-First-Tea-Party-Values-Distant-Second heard “taxpayer funded” and refused to comprehend anything else that was said. If people like you and Boehner have your way, the Jew ovens will be going full force again… SOON!

      If you listen to the video beginning at 3:43, Glenn says that THEY FOUND THE FUNIDING, AND STILL WERE “REJECTED”. Glenn reads the reason they were “rejected” even when they found their own funding. But we can always remember the Dems going to the ME, on the tax payers dime. In fact the Dems met with confirmed enemies of the U.S.! Remember Nancy Pelosi (other wise known as Cruella DeVil) skipping around the ME with a scarf on her head! And meeting with her good friend Assad of Syria!!!

      I agree with Deuteronomy 22. If they really want to attend they will buy their own way. If we were to attend we would have to purchase our own. We have to put an end to ALL the wasteful spending in Washington. It is a good cause and I would love to attend but the money isn‘t there for me and I don’t expect someone else to cover my cost.

      I have said for some time now that Boehner is a wolf in sheeps clothing! I hope the world is now understanding who he REALLY is! He is NOT of a mind to lower the national debt, look at the “deal” he made with the big spenders in Congress. He only mouths the words he must in order to gain the confidence of the public, but behind closed doors, he has NEVER taken off the democrat clothing he wore when he began in politics. We MUST elect Tea Party Candidates of either party in 2012. THEY WILL get along enough to at least LISTEN to both sides and then vote for legislation in a righteous way.

      I can’t blame Beck. Politicians are want to co opt anything for their own self aggrandizement. As it is, actual ‘Tea Party’ backed politicians who should be advancing the issues that the Tea Party communicated were their concerns to them and to which they agreed to carry forward should they be elected are now turning on their Tea Party supporters while being seduced by the corrupt establishment to become whores for the status quo.       If they are as committed to the Israeli cause then it would not matter if they had to self fund their trip. If I was in Congress with the salary and perks they get then it would be a no brainer to attend. Plus with all this back door dealing with Obama I feel that in my Opinion Boehner maybe on the Soros Payroll as a Republican Progressive playing as a conservative… Is he to be believed when he claimed a 100 billion dollar savings in the budget that turns out to be less than 100 million. I don’t trust the man as far as he can count…

I help those with Dementia diseases and prefer to deal with reality. The globalizationists in Congress are joined at the NON-PARTISAN hip. They agreed a long time back to be patient until my generation dies out. Meantime, through education, they’ve been bending the minds of the X, Y, Z generations, with obvious success. And, during the past couple of years, two people have told me they would be quite pleased with China taking us over with a combination government of socialism/communism. One was an officer at my bank (ARVEST Bank in Oklahoma) and the other was a 40-year-old relative of mine.       I’m reading a whole lot of comments that they were going on the “Taxpayer’s dime” Re-read the story, the Israel Allies Caucas Foundation, a 501c3 was planning on paying for it, and the ethics (laughingly so titled often.) committee mislabeled them a lobbiest group.
      That said, if this is an Israeli Charity group, certainly there are many projects in Israel that the money SHOULD be spent on. (This family Glenn talked about yesterday being one!) I say, LET THEM PAY THEIR OWN WAYS LIKE EVERYBODY ELSE!

      What many of the people posting do not seem to get is that this has nothing to do with representatives paying their own way or not. A nonprofit organization was offering to pay and the boehner group is saying they cannot go via a nonprofit because they are currently lobbying Washington. Either they are a lobbying group or they are a non-profit but they cannot be both.

      If Speaker John Boehner refuses to have the taxpayers pay for the trip, then I’m with him on this. But if it is for any other reason he should suffer any and all consequences for such a stupid move.

      With that being said, do NOT allow this to become the b*tch of the week. We need to focus on the real enemy… Obama. Go after his new ploy wherbey he refuses to deport any ILLEGALS if they haven’t broken any laws. This should be the top story all weekend.       Yep, Mr. Beck is way wrong on this issue. I don’t need to go to Israel to know their situation, and the danger they’re in, and I doubt Congresscritters do either. Well, they shouldn’t need to go there to know, but I do wonder about their intelligence at times.

      Conservatives do need to lead by example, and this is a good time to start. ALL trips like these should stop, if they are paid for with tax money. If a Congressman needs to learn about a specific place, he can google it, and if he needs to see something, there is googlemaps.

      I think that means that those who were planning on the trip were going to pay for it out of their own pocket – NOT with taxpayer dollars. The reason they were banned was because they were allying themselves with Glenn Beck and the Tea Party, which put pressure on Boehner over raising the debt ceiling. Boehner is having a hissie fit because he didn’t have the kaunas to fight for Cut-Cap-Balance as the Tea Party wanted – he is Mr. Compromise and those darn Tea Partiers just kept pressuring him not to do that. Now this is his pay-back. It has nothing to do with who pays for the trip; it’s an “ethical issue”. Really Mr. Boehner?

      I agree with Deuteronomy22 – while I support the event, no taxpayers should be footing the bill for events that they may be against. It is the same as me paying for education of illegal immigrants or abortions. If someone wants to do those things, the financial and spiritual price is on them, not the tax payer. We do not pay elected state officials to fly around the world for international “events”. We do not have the money – maybe this message is only clear when it works best for us, but it must be parallel across the board.

    I do not often disagree with Beck but i am going to this time. As (model82a1) said, these are represenatives of our goverment, not theirs. If they wanted to attend the house or senate is not stopping them, what they are actually saying is that the tax payers are not going to pay for it. Futhermore, i am a big fan of israel, always have been, and yes they need to stand up and fight back for their country, but right now i think Beck restoring courage thing would be better served here in the US. For once we need to really focus here at home and not abroad.

    Right now we need to fix things here, fix our boarders, fix our money problems, fix our racial problems. So yes stand and fight with Israel, but right now, stand and fight for the US, US first, the world next!

      I think the executive branch has mistreated our only real middle-eastern ally. It would be a strong message to have U.S. Congressmen in attendance of an event that supports our long-time ally. The can do this with our tax dollars as far as I am concerned because they are representing the U.S. and their constituents. While it would be nice to have an event like this in the U.S., we cannot afford to engage in isolationism. We cannot sell the long-term short. The long-term must include friendships with other countries. Just because we’re in financial hardship does not mean we should isolate ourselves. If anything we need to connect internationally with those countries which share our values.

      These Senators and Representatives already do enough travel at tax payer expense. They are called “Fact Finding Missions” but they are otherwise known as junkets. They stay in luxury hotels, beachside resorts and do their fact finding in SUVs and limousines. They are served the finest of foods and afain at tax payer expense.

      I support Glenn and his trip to Israel. Israel is the only true ally we have in the entire middle east. The POTUS has treated Prime Minister Netanyahu in the most shameful manner that this country has ever treated the head of state of any country. Glenn is showing the Israelis that the POTUS doesn’t represent the thinking of all Americans.

      As far as members of Congress are concerned, I really feel that it would be far more meaningful to the Israeli people if our elected representatives would pay their own way. That would show the Israelis that they

      I can‘t help but remember that the Jews in Jesus day weren’t even teaching of a suffering Messiah, because they had it wrong. And I’ve always been told that the first Disciples ALL believed that Jesus would return in their own lifetimes! How often we limit God by our preconceived notions of how He must work! Let’s watch and pray and be ready to Praise WHEN HE DOES CHOOSE TO WORK IN WHATEVER MANNER HE SO CHOOSES!!!
      Remember, it’s His Clock, and once before He set it backward (Check out the time NASA couldn’t get their calculations right until someone remembered that the Bible said God sat the sun backward in the sky for Joshua, when they figured it in it worked out! ) to give Joshua time to accomplish His work, This could well be what He’s doing again!!

    I never really liked Bohner, but now he’s being shown to be the Progressive in disguise cry baby rat that he is. The Republican caucus needs to jerk this guy out of his seat and put a real patriotic American in his place. Anyway, I stand by Israel even though there is no way I could afford to go to the event myself. I just hope enough true conservatives get voted in the House to kick the bum out of his seat the next cycle if indeed we make it that far. :)

      LYLEJK, The congress men are not prevented from going to Israel if they pay their own way. Regardless of the value or lack of value in attending Glenn’s event or meeting with Israeli officials this event is not a sanctioned event and should not be payed for by the govt.If our govt. payed for this trip it could have all kinds of unforseen political implications that may not be in the best interest of our country or Israel’s. Boehner is in my opinion unfairly being demonized in this instance and Glenn should be able to recognize the reasons for his stance. If these guys are really serious about supporting Israel, let them pay for the trip out of their own pockets and would send a much more powerful message anyway.Besides if Boehner set a presidence of approving financing this trip God knows what kind of crackpot trips might be requested in the future.

      I saw through Boehner many weeks before they actually passed the idiotic debt increase bill. He pretended to placate the conservatives by allowing their bill to come to order and pass the House knowing the Senate wouldn’t pass them, then, he made a deal with the potus to have the secretive 12 man panel which is a joke and a threat to all liberty (I hope I’m 100% wrong with this assessment by the way) which passed. Sorry, he can cry all he wants, but I no respect for him and the ACLU just loves to deceive so don’t concur with their assesment either. Boehner needs to be replaced and he will. I did not know that the Congressmen can go on their own accord; if that is so, then I can will take that part back w.r.t. Bohner since I interpreted that the Ethics committee made it non-ethical to go and that that decision was by request from Bohner. I’m just so angry right now that I sometimes read things wrong and should be better at that. Seeing this country literally go to pot and the market going crazy and the price of Gold going outrageous doesn’t help matters much. Also seeing the potus go on vacation as the country continues to tank really makes steam come out of my ears. Anyway, I’ll re-read the article. :)

      There were several bills introduced into the House which would have “Prioritized” spending if the debt ceiling was reached without being raised, THEY DIDN’T EVEN GET A VOTE!
      A high conservative lifetime rating may not mean that he’s the man for the battles we need to fight right now to save the country!!! For him to truly believe he needed to do something, rather than stand firm and tell BO and Reid, we passed “Cut, Cap, and Balance! take it or leave it, then pass the Prioritizing bills and releasing this to to the public means he doesn’t have the backbone to stand up to the progs.     I would not expect the government to fund a group of officials to go overseas to a private sector rally in support of anyone.

    Asking them to fund the trip for themselves is not a big deal.

    Government is over spending period. Glenn shouldn‘t be so upset just because they won’t spend for his party. Encourage reduced spending not get upset when its not getting spent for your agenda.

    In reality its a true test of the officials true commitment to Israel. If they would go “trip paid” what’s that really saying. If they had to spend thier own money to go….well that’s actually saying something.

    Congress is on vaca now anyways……no excuse if they don’t go.

    Heck who wouldn’t go if the trip was free.

      If I understand the story correctly, the trip would not be paid for by the goverment. It says that the IIACF, a 501(c)3 organization was sponsoring the mission for the representitives to attend. Also, I may be incorrect, but I believe I heard that some of the representitives offered to pay their own way and was still denied. I would really like to see a follow up article on this story.

    If Beck wants to help Israel, he should follow advice of Ron Paul and advocate for cutting American leash – the “aid”.

    - Without the leash Israel will be free to trade more with Russia, China, Brazil, India and that result in better relationship and less isolation.

    - Pentagon would be forced to pay market price for some of Israeli superior military know-how which is much higher than current American “aid.”

    - Most importantly, Israel will be free to deal with Iran or negotiate peace with Arabs on her OWN terms.

      You clearly don’t have a grasp of how business and government look at potential threats.
      Allowing 35 congressmen to be in Israel at the same time poses a serious potential security risk. It makes the event a higher value target to terrorists. You have the potential of losing 35 U.S. congressman in one fell swoop or being kidnapped, hijacked..etc. Business uses this policy all the time. A large group of upper tier executives never travel as one group because of the risk of an accident taking them all out at once. I’d say security advised Boehner not to allow this many congressmen to go. I would love to have seen that many GOP congressmen standing with Israel…the message to jewish voters in the U.S. would have been undeniable but their work is to the U.S first and the risk of losing all of them at once or a kidnapping, is a real one. If I was Walsh, I’d make my own way there, free from press coverage, as a free and private citizen.

      If any congressmen wanted to attend the Restoring Courage event as private US citizens, we would never hear anything about it. Nor should we.

      I think not. The congress is on vacation. Unless they travel to and from declaring they are on official business, and reimbursed as such, they are SUPPOSED to be treated as private citizens.
      Maybe you would rather they just go ahead and act as “footmen” and servants to the “WON?
