On Wednesday evening’s broadcast, Glenn Beck dedicated his Oval Office speech to examining Sir Winston Churchill’s rightful place in the Highest Office in the land.
“He was not a man who suffered fools,” Beck stated of America’s staunch war and peacetime ally.
“And he had a long memory for his enemies. He had a tenacious loyalty to the truth. And an unyielding faith in the tide of history. He believed that freedom was the desire of all mankind. But that freedom would have to be defended in every generation.”
Those enemies of course were Fascist and Communists, but the point Beck hoped to convey is that today, our enemies are just as real and just as looming. He added that those who don’t think those enemies “threaten us in our homes and our streets” likely care none too much for Churchill or his words and deeds. It seems, Obama might just be one of those people:

Posted on August 23, 2012 at 12:14pmHere we go again with gb perpetuating another urban myth or you could it a lie if you believed gb was capable of lying. The best was replaced by a bust of Abe Lincoln and not returned to the Brits.
At the end of the day gb, it is a bust and you are making it out to be some kind of religious thing. You continue to find the stupidest things to use to continue to divide this country and for that you are a weak pitiful man.

Posted on August 23, 2012 at 6:20pm@SARAN Sorry to disappoint, because I know how much fun it must be to accuse people of “perpetuating urban myths”…BUT: the Churchill bust in question is CURRENTLY located in the British Ambassador’s Residence in Washington D.C. (source: The Telegraph, “The White House Blunders again over the Churchill bust” by Nile Gardener, 23 August 2012). You’re welcome to do look it up if you like. The bust in question was on loan and was handed back to the British at the beginning of Obama’s term. A copy exists, but the actual sculpture by Sir Jacob Epstein no longer resides at 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue.

Posted on August 23, 2012 at 9:58am@Quiata: For sure Churchill was a hero. My point was not that he wasn’t deserving of the praise. My point was that in the Oval Office, I think it‘s perfectly acceptable to replace Churchill’s bust with an American hero like Abraham Lincoln. I know Glenn Beck reads motive and intent into that act and I’ll leave that interpretation to him, however conspiratorial it is. Moreover, of course it’s all about symbolism. That‘s is Glenn Beck’s stock in trade. He’s a performer. He manipulates with sentiment, props and language. He isn’t worth my time anymore. His limitations outweigh his contribution.

Posted on August 23, 2012 at 8:25amAh, Mr. Beck….
Russia was Britain’s ally in the second World War.
So did his long memory for enemies include the rebellious
United States?
Pure fiction, and not very historical.
A community college in your area could provide you with a low cost real education.

And whose “long memory for enemies” are you speaking of? Churchill? Take a little more time to craft your comments.

Posted on August 23, 2012 at 8:15am@JC Lest you forget, Stalin WAS in fact a wartime ally (sad as that complex situation was…) because that’s what it took to defeat the Nazis. Churchill was not alone in his assessment about Stalin and communism; he believed that aligning with Stalin was making a pact with a “‘devil’-like tyrant leading a vile system”.
It was our own wonderful FDR who in so many instances was TOO careful with his words, who in hindsight ends up sounding like yet another appease-the-bad-guy dupe.

Had to give the monster a treat. The lesser of two evils I figure.

Posted on August 23, 2012 at 2:53amWhen you look at the history of England during the war…what they went through, how they survived…how from the littlest kid to the oldest person, they all did their share.
And they did so in a noble, civilized manner.
I saw the same in Japan after the tsunami. Calm, well mannered, nobility…
You look at Americans and how they act when new “Air Jordan” shoes come out or a christmas sale at Walmart…or the “boil water” order at a small town near Boston a year or so ago.
In the past, a “Churchill” type figure would have instilled a sense of pride in us…or filled us with shame for our selfishness…but nowadays? Today the cynacism is too great, and the number of those who would call him a sucker and steal his hat while his back was turned giving a speech on hope are by far the majority.
Restoring morals, the pride of self worth, family values…that is the foundation we need to survive and flourish once more.
But I fear it will take a great culling of the herd to ever accomplish this.

Posted on August 23, 2012 at 10:14amOf course when the American Working Class and Middle Class was asked to fight Bush’s wars, when New Orleans and her citizens were forgotten by W. W. was making sure the Romney and his fellow 1% received more and more tax breaks to shield them from any hardships as the rest of the nation struggled.
This is nothing new to Romney, as he argued for the Vietnam war, he fled to Paris to avoid the draft. As he supported W.’s wars, he made sure it was the sons of the peasants and not his sons that put their lives at risk.

Posted on August 23, 2012 at 12:57amBeck is still pushing this story? I’m no Obama fan by any means but he replaced the Churchill bust with a Lincoln bust. No matter what Glenn the “psychologist” reads into that story, I’d rather, ya know, our OWN heroes in the Oval Office.
Moreover, is Glenn done playing dress up in his Oval Office yet? Reminds me when I was a kid and would build forts out of refrigerator boxes. Glenn is long past his worth.

Posted on August 23, 2012 at 1:14amYes, Abraham Lincoln was an AMERICAN President, but it’s hilarious that he was also a Republican! I wonder what Lincoln would have to say about President Obama. Would he think that Obama was nuts to change immigration law on his lonesome?

Posted on August 23, 2012 at 7:17am@NEITHER: At first I was also skeptical about Glenn’s mock “Oval Office”, until I realized that he’s making a rather brilliant point (whether he realizes it or not):
To some, authority and power are all about the “props”, and our self-assured-dear-leader-apologist-blamer-in-chief has an unerring instinct about props and settings (think back to election ‘08….and unfortunately ever since then, too). The packaging, costuming, and presentation is more than enough evidence to convince a substantial portion of the voting block as to one’s veracity…. Why bother with focusing on issues and arguments when the pretty label says it all?
It’s Marketing 101. Glenn is putting a spotlight on that “pig in a poke”.

Posted on August 23, 2012 at 7:36am@NEITHER As for Churchill’s significance as a “hero”, remember that he said the following while facing the threat of Adolf Hitler (et al.) during the grimmest of times:
“We shall not flag or fail. We shall go on to the end. We shall fight in France, we shall fight on the seas and the oceans, we shall fight with growing confidence and growing strength in the air, we shall defend our island, whatever the cost may be. We shall fight on the beaches, we shall fight on the landing grounds, we shall fight in the fields and in the streets, we shall fight in the hills; we shall never surrender.”
Can’t speak for you, but he’s one of MY heroes, and that bust should be returned as a reminder for whomever sits in that office next January.

Posted on August 23, 2012 at 10:03amQUI: Churchill was an eloquent speaker who inspired people to fight the Big Bully , Hitler, who was invading Europe and intimidating , threatening, and bombing England. We still have bullies in the world . Today’s version are the Islamic religious fanatics on one end of the spectrum and the International Communist/ Far Left on the other. We seem to be experiencing a group here in the USA who resort to bully tactics. They like to make bullhorn protests in bankers’ front yards, Occupy Democrat controlled cities, block our port shipments, clog legislative bodies, run out of state to avoid their legislative duties, control the major media outlets, and now threaten to disrupt the Republican Convention. Who will be our Churchill ?

Not to mention in college, he was taught that suburban whites abandonded the urban blacks when they moved out in droves. This added a chip on his shoulder towards those pampered whites in the suburbs.
