Beck Responds to ADL Statement Calling His Soros Reporting ‘Horrific’ & ‘Offensive’

After three days of television shows focusing on the work and impact of George Soros, the wave of Beck criticism crested Thursday night with the leader of the Anti-Defamation League issuing a strong denunciation of the programs:
Throughout three programs this week, Mr. Beck has portrayed Mr. Soros, a billionaire investor and philanthropist, as a “puppet master” who is “notorious for collapsing economies and regimes all around the world” and whose “next target” is the United States. Citing Mr. Soros’s statements about the decline of the dollar, Mr. Beck said, “Not only does he want to bring America to her knees, financially, he wants to reap obscene profits off us as well.”
Abraham H. Foxman, national director of the Anti-Defamation League, took issue with Mr. Beck’s depiction of Mr. Soros as a “Jewish boy helping sending the Jews to the death camps,” calling it “offensive” and “horrific.”
On Tuesday on his Fox program, watched by about 2.8 million people, Mr. Beck said that during the Holocaust, the 14-year-old Mr. Soros “used to go around with this anti-Semite and deliver papers to the Jews and confiscate their property and then ship them off.”
Mr. Beck continued: “I am certainly not saying that George Soros enjoyed that, even had a choice. I mean, he’s 14 years old. He was surviving. So I’m not making a judgment. That’s between him and God.” He also said that “many people” would call Mr. Soros “an anti-Semite,” though “I will not.”
On Thursday’s program, Beck revisited the issue and focused on how Soros has himself described that time in his life:
On his radio program Friday morning, Beck talked about a letter he recently received from the ADL’s Foxman.

Beck noted that his office provided a copy of the letter to The New York Times prior to the publication of their story. The contents of the letter were not included in the article.
This is the key segment from the Friday morning radio show:

Posted on November 12, 2010 at 2:17pmI agree that they have to be in his pocket. Cannot imagine a 14-year-old saying that the time during German occupation was the happiest time of his life. Sick dog! Maybe he needs to re-read the Diary of Anne Frank & the all the other Jew’s stories of the atrocities of what happened to them under Occupation. Idea — maybe he should view Stephen Spielberg’s Jewish Film Archives for 1st-hand videotaped experiences. Not only is Soros warped psychologically, he’s also a vile, hate-mongering, dirty dog who lacks any integrity & who thinks that the peoples of the world are his personal Sim Game from which to profit from — pure power (remember, it‘s a disease thinking you’re a God) & financial gain; absolutely no morality in the equation. I’d love to see the Congress have a special hearing on his influence on our economy &, if warranted, removed all non-profit status from all groups that accept money from him or, at best, deem him an enemy of the State & freeze all his US accounts. Off to call the Speaker-elect’s office.

The ADL has a long history, paradoxically, of being a self destructive organization. Why? I can’t even begin to guess. But that irony has never escaped me. Like the ACLU saying it stands for American freedom and liberty and doing everything it can to destroy it. Or CAIR saying it stands against terrorism while funding HAMAS with revenues. Who can figure what the motives are? But the actions speak louder than words and contradict the premise.

Beck plays that old game where he says he is not judging but then judges, claims he isn’t calling someone anti-Semitic but then does. Watch when someone prefaces a comment with, “some of my best friends are X” or “with all due respect.” What follows is the exact thing they claim they are not doing. Only fools believe these kinds of remarks.
Beck’s attack on Soros is so far outside of the facts, from his claim that Soros hurt the UK economy to his argument that he is anti-Semitic because he did what he needed to do to survive or because he is not a supporter of Israeli policies (as if protesting China’s foreign policy makes you racist against Chinese). The entire thing is a sham designed to divert attention from the massive spending by rich Republican donors in the last election, which have been more prevalent than Soros’ donations and which are done in the darkness of anonymity (again, unlike Soros). Only partisans so blind to or disregarding of facts and fair play would believe this nonsense. Unfortunately, there are a lot of ignorant or dishonest conservatives that do. Let’s hope that there are many more who rightly dismiss Beck for what he is: a charlatan who cares not what impact on the body politic his antics might have, since he seeks only to outdo his last fake crisis on the way to higher ratings. Coulter and Limbaugh have laid the groundwork, but Beck has taken it to a new and more irresponsible level.

I’d be happy to. First, I haven’t provided support for the 1992 billion-dollar bet on the pound, since I was on a trading floor in Frankfurt and watched it happen first hand. I knew people who had put in trades for Soros on various trading desks (e.g., Deutsche, Dresdner, Goldman, Merrill, etc.), so I have given a first hand account. You can read a decent account of it here:
http://olesiafx.com/Kathy-Lien-Day-Trading-The-Currency-Market/George-Soros-the-Man-Who-Broke-The-Bank-Of-England.html
It clearly shows that massive macroeconomic forces were at play that involved German reunification and a breakdown in the harmonization of economies in the EU. These forces are too large for a central bank to fight, so the inevitable happened. Soros was simply the biggest and most well-known predictor and profiter of these events, but he was not the cause. You can also prove this by looking at the relative size of the markets for major currencies, then or now. The US dollar cannot be moved for very long by our Treasury, since its resources are dwarfed by two orders of magnitude by the size of the volume in the dollar market. The same is true of the pound. For Beck to assert that Soros tanked the UK economy, by providing snippets of video, is to make ridiculous accusations that no economist or currency trader would take seriously. Yes, the video clips make it seem plausible to the untrained in finance and economics, but it is still the work of a charlatan. Hopefully, this explanation, along with the independent account and information regarding relative sizes of currency markets to government resources to move those markets, all help you see clearly and logically that the claim that Soros tanks economies is beyond stupid as a defensible claim.
“So far, Glenn backs up every thing he says with the research to show for it and you guys from the other side of the issue just repeat talking points, resort to name calling, and never show us anything to support your statements or attempt to debate any specific information provided by Glenn with equal documentation to back up your point. What have you got?”
So if you ask for specifics about Soros’ causes, I’d be happy to help out there as well. The Tides Foundation or MoveOn.org are clearly partisan groups that are promoting liberal ideas and progressive agendas, but they are not communist and they do not fall under the category of unAmerican ideas. You need only go visit their websites or read other third-party accounts of what they do to learn that Beck is massively exaggerating the “threat” associated with them. The Tides Foundation operates on the left the way the Heritage Foundation used to on the right when it was a more disciplined and serious think tank. This is hardly a Stalinist threat that Beck describes. Soros has done a lot to promote anti-authoritarian groups from taking hold in the Eastern Block after the fall of communism, and he was a big critic of Bush for promoting the War in Iraq and pushing through teh Patriot Act, which did much to curtail our civil liberties. These are not the deeds of a man seeking to consolidate power, but one who seeks to avoid authoritarianism in the first place. You can find a couple of important documentaries that appeared on FreeSpeech channel that show Soros quoting George Orwell and his prescient warnings about authoritarian regimes using propaganda to take people’s freedoms away through legal maneuvers and constant war. Soros saw aspects of that in Bush’s administration. He spoke, in my opinion, truth to power, while conservatives, who were enjoying the power and were corrupted by it, bitterly attacked Soros rather than owning up to this behavior. This is not the work of a Stalinist, but of a man more committed to individual freedom than Beck. Simply Google search Soros and FreeSpeech channel, or George Orwell to see what I am talking about. These are quotes that Beck has conveniently ignored as he attempts to misrepresent Soros. Beck is bothered that Soros is a liberal, but he is making him out to be a communist. This is slander and it doesn’t fit with the body of work that Soros has done.
” I am sick of hearing lies and distortions from both sides. What is refreshing about Glenn is that he makes a statement and then shows the guy on video or quoting his own statements telling us exactly where to go to get this information ourselves to be sure we are getting it in proper context. Again, what have you got?”
You certainly are smart enough to know that I can put together a montage with video that appears to show one thing when the reality is the exact opposite. I call this Breitbarting, since Breitbart did this to Shirley Sherrod by only showing video clips that made her look like a racist against whites when th reality is the exact opposite. The clips that Beck has chosen to show about Soros are ones that make him look like a megalomaniac who seeks to run people’s lives, but he ignores the clips in which Soros has denounced authoratarian regimes on the left and the right–again, take a look at the documentaries on Free Speech channel–which run counter to the Beck narrative. I also found an excellent rebuttal to many of the falsehoods perpetuated by Beck in the following piece published in Reason magazine, a leading libertarian publication:
http://reason.com/blog/2010/11/12/glenn-becks-ridiculous-misread
That will go a long way toward presenting the factual support for my contentions across a whole host of Beck’s lies and exaggerations and mistruths.
” I want to judge both sides but, so far, only one side is backing up what he says and that is Glenn Beck. Forget about attacking Glenn and start addressing the specific thing he has said with your proof to back it up. Thats what I am hungry for is the truth. Show me some constructive documented truth to back up your statements.”
So I hope that I have, without the help of a paid staff, gone some way toward showign that Beck is totally speaking lies when he claims that Soros is tanking economies. I also hope that you will find compelling the quotes that show Soros is clearly more worried about the loss of freedom to authoritarian regimes given that he was protesting the loss of civil liberties under the Patriot Act when conservatives like Beck were mindlessly supporting the President–as long as a conservative is in power, then we are happy no matter how incompetent or corrupt he might act.
I hope that you will respond to this responsibly. I find a deplorable pattern on this blog that when the conservatives lose an argument they simply ignore the counter-factual evidence and continue to spout the lies. If you really are going to make up your mind having done your homework then you have to be ready to abandon your ideological biases and preconceived notions and be prepared to come out on the anti-Beck side. If you are not able to do this, then you are worse than he is–although I have my doubts that Beck really wants you to do your homework in the first place. Call his bluff. Show that you have the diligence and the flexibility to change your mind and view things as they are rather than as your ideological narrative demands that they be. Else, I am wasting my time responding to you.

I do not like what Mr. Ed spits out his mouth, but I’m not out trying to remove him from the media. This is and will always be America to me and I will die fighting with the American flag before I let someone tell me to take it down!

Posted on November 12, 2010 at 1:09pmThe ADL is correct. It is horrific and offensive. It‘s horrific and offensive to me that a man like Soros is playing with people’s lives like a game of chess. It‘s horrific and offensive that Soros hates being a Jew so badly that he’s turned on them and offers no support for Israel or Jews in general. It‘s horrific and offensive that he’s rallied every American hating liberal, radical and idealouge as useful idiots and foot soldiers to harm America and it’s interests. Soros clearly wants to be King of the World and America as usual is the last thing standing in his way of making this happen. The ADL are fools for supporting this man just like his idiot storm troopers are fools. He would and has thrown the Jewish people under the bus for personal gain and he’s just using the idiots to gain ultimate world power.
And isn‘t it odd that the left’s accusation of Beck’s motivation is money? And that everything they hate about America, capitalism, etc. is what made Soros the power he is today? And isn’t it odd that every uber wealthy person in the world like Soros, Bill Gates and Oprah, after they’ve made their billions on the capitalistic system now want to change it so nobody else can?
Screw you George Soros. I am as successful as I want to be, but I reserve the right to make a billion dollars selling the next big idea like Windows, Snuggies, Chia Pets or the hula hoop. In America I can, so leave it the hell alone.

Secondly, they are good for one thing. I printed out many a symbol from their “hate symbols” page to give to my tattoo artists.

Posted on November 12, 2010 at 2:37pmInteresting how someone speaking about one Jew ( a non-practicing atheist at that) can be called anti-semetic, yet when George Soros brought down the economies of entire cultures, not a word is spoken. There were over 10 million Jews in Czech Republic in 2006 – don’t you think a good number of them went through serious hardships due to Mr. Soros? I guess defamation is thier only concern when it comes to the lives of Jewish people around the world. You are free to ruin people’s lives, but don’t you dare say something bad about them. The ADL is a joke.

Posted on November 12, 2010 at 2:43pmA terrific article was published in Harper’s Magazine in 1964 entitled “The Paranoid Style in American Politics.” Easy to find on the net. Is a wiki link to some quotes: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Paranoid_Style_in_American_Politics
We been down this road many times before. Here’s one quote that I think Beck must have memorized, and something all of you here are buying into. From the year 1964:
“The enemy is clearly delineated: he is a perfect model of malice, a kind of amoral superman—sinister, ubiquitous, powerful, cruel, sensual, luxury-loving. Unlike the rest of us, the enemy is not caught in the toils of the vast mechanism of history, himself a victim of his past, his desires, his limitations. He wills, indeed he manufactures, the mechanism of history, or tries to deflect the normal course of history in an evil way. He makes crises, starts runs on banks, causes depressions, manufactures disasters, and then enjoys and profits from the misery he has produced. The paranoid’s interpretation of history is distinctly personal: decisive events are not taken as part of the stream of history, but as the consequences of someone’s will. Very often the enemy is held to possess some especially effective source of power: he controls the press; he has unlimited funds; he has a new secret for influencing the mind (brainwashing); he has a special technique for seduction (the Catholic confessional).”
Sound just like Soros doesn’t it?

Not worth it and I‘m sure he really didn’t mean it in a seriously mean way. I am still posting and have no intent on letting anyone convince me I shouldn’t. THANK YOU GLENN FOR SHEDDING THE LIGHT ON A VERY SCARY SPOOKEY DUDE. Posted on November 12, 2010 at 3:24pmJZS–there is a clear difference between “paranoid” and “vigilant.” Seeing the 14 trillion dollar debt, out of control government and entitlement programs, arrogance and elitism in the highest offices of the land, the loss of the most fundamental American values of Faith, Hope and Charity–isn’t paranoia–it is vigilance.
The patterns are there and are not being superimposed. Soros has a track record of enjoying collapsing economies and profiting from their collapse. He masks his essentially predatory character in philanthropy–but his messianic aspirations for a “new world order” comes from his own mouth.
Paranoids have to fabricate facts to support their distorted world views. Glenn just uses Soros’ words and interviews themselves to “reveal” the predatory core beneath the calmly deceptive demeanor that Soros wears–and probably believes.
It is quite possible that Soros himself is split and not fully aware of the the danger that lies beneath his good intentions. After all, communism itself was seen by Stalin and Po Pot and Mao–as “a good thing.” Meant well–created hell. Again, the self deception of those who believe that the ends justify the means–even if it means collapsing economies and causing untold pain and misery.

Fabricating facts is exactly what Glenn Beck is doing. And you can do this by taking a person’s quotes out of context. For example, Soros didn’t collapse the UK economy. He predicted and profited from a 30% decline in the Pound. To say that he collapsed the UK economy is a fabrication. Similarly, to take his comments about feeling like a god–which many superrich people do, from Larry Ellison to James Cameron–and twist them into actually asserting that Soros has control over Eastern Europeans is fabrications of the most deluded order. Beck cannot name one variable or characteristic of Polish life that has been irretrievably changed because of Soros, yet you would think that Soros is the second coming of Stalin based upon the rhetoric. This is not vigilance but paranoia of the worst kind.

You say, “Soros has a track record of enjoying collapsing economies and profiting from their collapse.” You heard that from Glenn, but have you verified that? Can you post here, to the world, what that “track record” is”? What economies? And how did Soros “collapse” them and profit from them? I challenge you to provide a single source independent from Glenn Beck.
You wish you had a stronger word than “love” for Glenn Beck. I can think of a few.

Posted on November 12, 2010 at 11:21pmAnother quote appropriate to the discussion, soon to the added to the Tea Party Opinions for Dummies book that I’m writing and hope to make millions from. Black and white thinking, seeing the world as good vs. evil with no middle ground. You are with God, or you are with Lucifer. Nothing in between, no nuance, no complicated issues, no subtleties , no negative consequences from the stand you take. It‘s black or it’s white, and there is no gray.
http://www.harpers.org/archive/1964/11/0014706
“The paranoid spokesman sees the fate of conspiracy in apocalyptic terms — he traffics in the birth and death of whole worlds, whole political orders, whole systems of human values. He is always manning the barricades of civilization… he does not see social conflict as something to be mediated and compromised, in the manner of the working politician. Since what is at stake is always a conflict between absolute good and absolute evil, what is necessary is not compromise but the will to fight things out to a finish. Since the enemy is thought of as being totally evil and totally unappeasable, he must be totally eliminated — if not from the world, at least from the theatre of operations to which the paranoid directs his attention.”

Posted on November 13, 2010 at 11:01amABC–ultimately you have to ask yourself if you think Soros is a man of character. I think that he has made his fortune off betting on the “don’t come”–=which means he profits and invites misery. He is clearly masking that predatory character with acts of philanthropy, but his efforts to get Fox and Beck off the air just confirm to me that he is predatory to the core. Instead of regret his year with the Nazi, he says it was the best year of his life. Instead of celebrating the First Amendment, he pays to silence people. Instead of being open about his support of progressive groups, he hides behind a network of front organizations. People who obtain wealthy without adding value to the world and society are in my opinion not people of character. People who intentionally profit from economic collapses are participants in those collapses, and people of the lowest possible character. New world order engineered in the dark by a messianic spooky dude using surrogates? No thank you.

Posted on November 13, 2010 at 11:13amJZS–We all tend to love people who reflect our values and principles. Who personify them. My affection for Glenn reflects the fact that I share his emphasis on Faith, Hope, and Charity–and the greatest of these is Charity (love). Soros in not someone I admire because he has not made his fortune by creating something of value for society. Instead, he has made his fortune through benefiting from currency transactions that do not have intrinsic value. We are currently paying the price for this way of making money because of the collapse of the secondary mortgage markets and hedge funds. I have no problem with you admiring and perhaps loving Soros and what he has done and what he is doing. I don’t. I love Glenn as a person–and I love him for what he stands for. I can’t respect or admire Soros–no matter how much money he throws around–because I see his core–and at his core he is not someone I can admire or respect. But I am always open to the possibility that Soros will come to terms with the inner predator that is such a part of his character. The first step along the way to that would be for him to spend an hour with Glenn and openly discuss and debate his ideas in a public forum. What is he afraid of? Love and Truth does not need to hide.
