Beck Responds to NY Times Article: ‘Hatchet Job’

On his radio show Monday, Glenn Beck responded to criticism from a New York Times article that he is inciting violence by focusing on Frances Fox Piven’s calls for revolution. His response? It’s a “hatchet job.” And he’s not the only one saying it.

First the charge: by focusing on Piven — who the Times insinuates isn’t really calling for violent revolution — Beck is fostering hate against her, hate that includes talk of violence by commenters on this site.

(Read and listen to Piven’s own words.)

Now the response. It started with a cheeky supply and demand lesson for the Times, as well as a reference to dogs “piddling”:

Later on, he got more serious and called the article a “hatchet job” and “slop”:

As Beck pointed out, the group the Times quotes in its article has ties to George Soros. In the piece, the Times references a letter sent from the Center for Constitutional Rights (CCR) to the chairman of Fox News, Roger Ailes, asking him to stop Beck from spreading “false accusations” about Piven.

“Mr. Beck is putting Professor Piven in actual physical danger of a violent response,” the Times quoted the letter as saying. The group continued: “We are vigorous defenders of the First Amendment. However, there comes a point when constant intentional repetition of provocative, incendiary, emotional misinformation and falsehoods about a person can put that person in actual physical danger of a violent response.”

But what the Times does not mention is that the organization has had the backing of George Soros, the man who has declared war on Beck and has invested millions in organizations that are trying to get Beck off the air.

In 2007, the website NGO Monitor, a watchdog for NGOs or Non-Government Organizations, wrote a summary of CCR’s activities and funding. The website said the the group’s “activities have become more radicalized.” At the time the article was published, NGO Monitor wrote that the group received “large donations from the Ford Foundation and George Soros’ Open Society Institute.” Another site, DiscoverTheNetworks.org, points out that Soros was funneling money to CCR as far back as 2004.

NGO Monitor isn’t some radical group either. Holocaust survivor, and winner of the Nobel Peace Prize, Elie Wiesel currently sits on the group’s International Advisory Board.

So is Beck the only one that thinks that it’s Piven, not him, inciting violence? No — the Wall Street Journal thinks so too.

In a lengthy article riddled with Piven’s own words, James Taranto dissects the Times article and concludes:

But the idea that Beck is to blame for these alleged threats is baseless. That is why the Times makes this accusation only indirectly, through insinuation and innuendo, consistent with its recent journalistic modus operandi. Indeed, what exactly is Beck supposed to have done wrong here? There is no allegation that anything he has said about Piven or her ideas is untrue, save for her denial in the Times that she has advocated violence, which is contradicted by her own quote in the previous paragraph.

“Nor is there any claim that Beck has advocated threats against Piven,” Taranto goes on to say, noting the truth is “quite the contrary” since this site actually deleted the reader comments that were violent and threatening in nature.

So why would the Times dabble in such an attack? Taranto has a theory:

Why is a newspaper that has been posturing as the scourge of violent rhetoric now siding with a purveyor of such rhetoric, and blatantly slanting the news as it does so? Because her opponent is a prominent media figure from outside the old media establishment. Because Glenn Beck is a threat to the authority of the New York Times.

A “threat.” Makes sense. But such violent rhetoric.

Exactly! The left is working overtime to control the national dialogue. How come they aren‘t outraged by Piven’s call for violence? Instead they will shoot the messenger. They want to say that she wasn’t literally calling for violence (but yes she was), and when the right posts “cross hairs” on a map- we are to believe that this innuendo incites violence. How come NY times is concerned with Pivin’s death threats, but no care for Sarah Palin‘s or Glenn Beck’s death threats?

I had a recent passing thought. When Glenn’s well researched broadcasts/projections over the passsed two years come to fruition (truth and reality), how is the mainstram media going to spin their acidic position to show how they had positively acknowledged Beck’s position on all issues over the same timeframe.”The public just misunderstood our position.”

      @Vinny–
It is not appropriate, I think, to say that anyone on the left is “hoping for the destruction of the country”, as what they really want is the transformation of the country — they have good intentions. But leftism tends to be very childish in that it wants what it wants and it wants it NOW, no need to think things through or pay heed to potential unintended consequences.

      @Butcher–
I do not completely understand why Beck doesn’t really debate anymore. When he first started on Fox I remember he had the chairman of the Democratice Socalists, or something like that. I think he would do well to have someone on his show to debate at least once a week.

The removal of my post here by, i assume, the editors tells me much about the intention and integrity of this site.

I would be remiss not to point out the irony of removing a post that expressed the desire for, among other things, “open and aggressive debate.” If this dialectic sentiment is unwelcome and runs aground of your stalwart stewardship then may the good ship Blaze break-out in mutiny, begin taking on water and sink to a silent dark grave. It is utterly useless.

I have been listening/watching Glenn Beck for about a year now, and I have NEVER heard him say anything that would incite violence against anyone. If instructing the public on the dangers facing America in the forms of revolutionaries, anarchists, and communists is what the TIMES is worried about, they need to reevaluate themselves. Have they considered that the mass media with all their liberal hosts and “comedians” has incited hate speech and possible violence against Glenn Beck, Bill O’Reilly, Hannity, and Michelle Malkin, not to mention Sarah Palin? Do they not see it as a two-way street? They need to understand this: conservatives and the right are not going to be shut up. We are going to scream our heads off until America is restored to her principles and values. Their day is OVER and they have LOST! Go back under the rock you came from, progressives.

That they believe so even when the real truth is presented to them on a silver platter, in Piven’s own words, is pathetic. “We don’t care if you stand out in your front yard and look up at a blue sky – it isn’t really blue…you just think it is because the right told you it was. It’s really yellow. Listen to us, because we are the left…would we lie to you?”

So now Soros is making the next opening move on his attack of Beck and the conservatives. With the facts of Soros plans, and those of ones like Fox Piven, and now the New York Times, we need to keep our eyes and ears open even more. These folks are going to ramp the pressure up greater and greater to the best they are capable of; they seek just one person they can use to force the POTUS to clamp down upon the nation.

James Taranto states it clearly with “Nor is there any claim that Beck has advocated threats against Piven.” He further sights that the Blaze deleted comments by readers of any threatening and violent nature as well.

And now Beck is a threat to the authority of the NYT? That one I have to wonder about, for Beck is so far beyond the authority of the NYT in morality and logic that there is no comparison.

Soros has also backed multiple conservative think tanks, like the Cato Institute, who often send guests to Beck’s own show. This idea that any organization that has received a check from Soros, no matter when or how much, is inherently unreliable, is absolutely nonsense–and Beck’s own behavior on his show is proof of this. The reality is that Beck’s attacks on other liberal think tanks have already led to arrests for stalking and attempted assault, so the NYT is seeing the result of one of Beck’s recent campaigns and are raising a reasonable warning. Beck can choose to ignore this, but at his own peril. If a nut job ends up attacking Piven, he will be doing backtracking faster than Palin and her gun-sights-turned-surveyor-lenses. Beck is entitled to criticize Piven’s position, but he overstates and exaggerates the dangers she poses to the extreme, and this is a serious flaw in how he operates. Unfortunately, it is also a necessary one, since he is interested in money and ratings, not the truth or problem-solving.

Sondergard, tell that to the grieving family of slain Doctor Tiller; I believe his killer was a right-winger. As was the Executive Director of the Minuteman American Defense Group, who was arrested for the murder of a father and his 8-year-old son. Or the right-wing supremacist who killed three police officers in Pittsburgh a couple years ago. Or the anti-government right wing nut job who wounded two police officers at the Pentagon. Or the right winger who killed a security guard at the Holocaust Memorial. And I could go on. The fact is that there are more acts of murder and terror committed by right wing people in the US than those committed by Muslims in this country–and the difference is huge–yet all you ever see on Fox is how afraid we are of Muslims, rather than ultra-right-wingers. Perhaps that is why you have maintained this FALSE belief that all murderers and assassins and terrorists are on the left. Or perhaps you do not feel any moral outrage about the acts of violence that I have cited, in which case you need serious help.

Dear Blaze. Why oh why did I have to close 17 ad windows trying to watch the second video? Listen closely. When I click on the “CLOSE” button, it means I don’t want to look at the ad. It doesn’t mean I want to close the window 17 times during the video. What the hell is wrong with you? I swear this site is run by imbeciles.

Glenn Beck is provoking violence by spouting conservative hate speech. We all know that Conservatives only claim to have principles so they can conceal their tracks when they take food out of babies’ mouths and kick grandmas to the ground for fun.
Harmless centrists like Piven have never been responsible for any violence. Sure her beliefs may sound a lot like some historical figures that promoted violence: Stalin, Hitler, Pol Pot, Mao. But they were only defending the people from conservative violence: those wishing to conserve their lives violently throwing words at the peoples security forces.

      Sondergard,
I am not one of any of those people you mentioned. I do not represent any vast left wing conspiracy, nor am I a member of the media. Really, your transparent attempt to divert the issue is just sad.

ABC, have you considered that “Doctor” Tiller massacred 60,000 children via the abomination known as abortion? I’ll pray for his grieving family, but I’m not going to pretend to be saddened by his removal from this plane of existence. He had been a regular church-goer, so I’m kind of surprised if his pastor (at the very least) didn’t take the time to explain this whole “Thou Shalt Not Kill” commandment.

What I AM saddened by is that his murderer may very well have risked eternal damnation because he couldn’t have found a better way.

As for the Holocaust Museum shooter, the 88-year old Von Brunn was an anti-semite who claimed that Christianity was a dastardly plot by the Jews to overthrow Roman culture and has contempt for the Right. For crying out loud, the guy is a self-professed SOCIALIST! How many right-wingers here are going around advocating socialism or any of its variants? None! Why? Because socialism is LEFT-wing.

Fox-Piven does not hesitate to put the country in danger by advocating violence, so why should we worry that Soros thinks she is in danger. I watch the GB show almost everyday and have NEVER, repeat NEVER heard him advocate violence against Fox-Piven or anyone else. The progressives are just conducting a smear campaign to try to keep their followers from learning the truth.

PubliusPencilman, you and ABC seem to share the same political ideology. You know, the one that has murdered over 100 hundred million people between China and the Soviet Union. And don’t forget the 50 million innocent lives aborted since you got your way with Roe v Wade. Dang you guys like death.

Typical Beck tactics: You could get the impression that NGO-Monitor backs Beck in any way. It doesnt. They never stated that they think the connection to Soros is bad or something, for noone except Glenn and his disciples think Soros is the antichrist…

Prove what you say where are these records of arrests give us links to the articles and names of the people that were assaulted and the assaulter’s. If you can’t do that then what you say is a out and out lie.

      Prove it.
I am very curious to see if there is any truth in what you purport as factual.

I guess ignorance is bliss and the little bubble you have surrounded yourself with filters out the truth of what people say in their own words in writing and in speech. The only one I see shecking there duty to be informed is you. Currious that you would call out the people on this blog for what you are guilty of.

If you look a little deeper all of the murders you are talking about were committed by Crazy people the same holds true for those on the left. Psychopaths are the real issue not their supposed political views.

Glenn Beck and his research team have apparently adopted a USA Collapse storyline. The boggyman is George Soros. Is this helpful to any of his viewers or readers?

Good investment managers and advisors look at outcomes in terms of probability. So, assuming the very “worst case scenario” (collapse) is not normally a sensible course of action to take. Now, if the United States Government and the FED continue on the policy road they are on, then I believe the probability of a dollar collapse would of course grow.

Glenn Beck needs to address scenario probabilities in his various presentations. In addition, he needs to be a bit more practical in his recommendations. For example, I don’t think hoarding food is necessarily a great idea. Every can of food has an expiration date, usually not to exceed one year (or less). Putting lots of cash in your mattress at home is not a great strategy either. Buying lots of physical gold, which is NOT fungible, seems like misplaced faith-at least to me.

Actually, I don’t think any lone individual can survive for long if our system were to completely collapse. Many would perish and many more would suffer immeasureably. So, what can Glen Beck do about it? I fear he is being overly dramatic in order to boost ratings and attention. He is certainly not alone in seeking public attention.
