Beck Responds to Smithsonian Exhibit Depicting Thomas Jefferson as ‘Slaveholder’

On Saturday The Blaze reported that the Smithsonian Museum of Natural History in our nation’s capital is currently featuring an exhibit that classifies Thomas Jefferson as “a slave holder.”

As a precursor to entering the exhibit, museum-goers are presented with a five-minute long video that describes Christopher Columbus as a colonizer and conqueror of others who “talked and acted differently” and refers to Jefferson as simply, a “slave holder.”

The narrator of the video says that race “is a powerful idea that was invented by society.” He continues:

“Many of the ideas we now associate with race originated during the European era of exploration. Europeans like Christopher Columbus traveled overseas and encountered and then colonized and conquered peoples in Africa, Asia and the Americas who looked, talked and acted much differently from them.

“In the American colonies, the first laborers were European indentured servants. When African laborers were forcibly brought to Virginia beginning in 1619, status was defined by wealth and religion, not by physical characteristics such as skin color. But this would change.

By 1776 when “All men are created equal” was written into the Declaration of Independence by a slave holder named Thomas Jefferson, a democratic nation was born with a major contradiction about race at its core. As our new nation asserted its independence from European tyranny, blacks and American Indians were viewed as less than human and not deserving of the same liberties as whites.”

Watch the video for yourself below:

Now when Glenn Beck caught wind of the arguably skewed message being presented by the Smithsonian, he weighed in with his thoughts during his Monday radio program.

“That’s how you are going to describe one of the greatest men in history?” Pat asked.

Glenn noted that while Jefferson may have in fact owned slaves, that was not the sum total of the man who, in the end, actually laid the groundwork for ending slavery in America.

The Smithsonian also made certain to share some rather subjective views on “race science” yet failed to mention that the ideology was spawned by progressives.

“The rise of race science supported the common belief that people who were not white were biologically inferior,” the film explains.

“How come they didn’t mention that that was the progressive movement that did that?” Glenn asked.

Glenn then addressed some of the radical progressive (and racist) actions of the past, including Woodrow Wilson screening KKK lauded “Birth of a Nation” film in the White House, FDR’s Japanese internment camps, and Andrew Jackson’s rounding up of the Indians. For some reason, none of these were mentioned in the Smithsonian film.

Watch Glenn’s take on the outrageous new Smithsonian exhibit and the message it is sending:

The whole of Washington is obsessed with race because trash like obama and holder are racists. Who cares if Jefferson had a few slaves.? There were black planters in the South that had slaves to…admittedly they were in the minority (pardon the pun) but there were quite a few of them. After the civil war, crazy Abe sent back a boat load of freed slave to west africa and dropped them off (Liberia), One of the first things they did was to make slaves out of the blacks that were there. I am tired of hearing about ‘slaves’ and ‘slavery’…………………….I don’t care nor feel guilt.

Of course you don’t care. It‘s painfully obvious that you don’t care. And that is exactly why black people can never forget that slavery existed and that they are living with the residuals stemming from it. People like you, who don‘t care don’t matter. Evil is a non factor.

I wasn’t alive during slavery and my great grandparents were Canadian. I had nothing to do with it, nor did I benefit from it. My great grandfather was a poor boat maker. My grandfather was a roofer who moved to America in the early 1900′s. None of my descendants ever had a slave.
It’s simple to demonize Republicans and Conservatives. Liberals say, “All Republicans are white and rich.” A lie. Then listen to the Smithsonian demonize the Founding Fathers and the simply say whites did all these racist acts. The entire time ignoring that it was Progressives and Liberals that did them. They put 2 and 2 together to get 5.
Ignore that it was actions of racist Progressives and Liberals and say Republicans are all rich, white guys and BOOM! Republicans are responsible for all the evil Progressives have done.
They still do it today. They paint all Conservatives as “flat earth” Christians, but they place Liberal Christians on an altar at the same time. Hypocrites.
On the next page, I talk about the Lenin Socialist writer Richard Hofstadter because someone brought up Social Darwinism as if it was a Conservative’s idea. It wasn’t. Hofstadter was just another dishonest Progressive.

I’m with you! I never owned a slave, my ancestors never owned slaves or anyone else…so I have ZERO guilt. The part in the whole discussion that drives me bonkers was hit on by “Onion”….What about all the Africans who sold their OWN FAMILY to the slave traders? When do their descendents go back to Africa & pull the “race card” on them? I’m proud to know a number of slave descendents who have moved on and are PROUD to be Americans. Kudos to them!!! They’re moving beyond the Democrat Plantation!!

Well you have the “black people had slaves too” talking points down. Liberia was founded much earlier than the Civil War (hint: the capital is Monrovia) and African colonization was the most prevalent strain of early abolition. However, you are inadvertently supporting the very argument that the Smithsonian is trying to make. American slavery was different than just about every other form of slavery in world history because it was happening in a democratic society and it was solely about race. American slavery wasn’t about debt, religious difference, prisoners of war or tribal rivalry, it became about skin color and nothing more. Colonization was supported by abolitionists who hated slavery but were still racist and wanted nothing to do with black people. That is the point that the Smithsonian is making and it is pretty hard to deny.

Sure, they could have spread some blame around – Wilson’s belief in a Southern narrative of Reconstruction, Progressive eugenics, Jackson’s gross abuse of executive power during Indian Removal – but how does that make their history “controversial”? Jefferson was a slave holder and famously said that “all men are created equal.” Isn’t the continuing realization of the Declaration of Independence what the history of civil rights in this country is all about? How can you express outrage at trying to better a fundamental contradiction in the founding of the United States?

Yes, the USA used to have slavery, however we have been learning from our past mistakes. Just like any country in the world we all have made mistakes. I say suck it up, times have changed. Any man judging another by the color of their skin is ignorant. And any man saying he can’t make it because of the color of his skin, is sitting in his own pity party, especially in today’s world. This goes for whites, blacks, and any human beings in the USA. I have seen more, black on white discrimination as of late. I am getting tired of hearing the statement “You are racist” if you don’t agree on issues.” Obama was supposed to be the one to “Unite,” however he has caused more division through his own racist actions or lack of action. Being poor has nothing to do with RACE, it has everything to do with self-accountability, along with other factors. Life is tough!, even for white people trying to get ahead. It is hard to pull yourself out of a hole. however, with faith, family, strong, morals, work ethic, etc… Hopefully life gets better, however that’s not guaranteed.

I suppose it matters not that slavery ended 150 years ago? I suppose it doesnt matter that no one alive was ever a slave? It doesnt matter that even the slave owners were left absolutely crushed and broken by the civil war. The primary beneficiaries of slavery in so far as lasting wealth were northern insurance companies, slave shiop ownerers/slave dealers, and of course the carpetbaggers. Never mind that the oppression of blacks was every bit as bad in the industrial north as the south after the war. Never mind that racism was just as prevalent in the north after the war. Never mind that somehow the things being called the legacy of slavery never started to befall the black community until after the civil rights act was enacted. oh yes lets continue to demonize the founding fathers.

Shiroi – How exactly were conservatives vilified in that video? How does pointing out that the person who said “all men were created equal” actually owned some of those men attack a modern conservative political stance? The point is that American attitudes towards race provided a fundamental contradiction with the democratic values of this country. How does listing examples of state sponsored racism target conservatives? Stop playing the whiny victim. Not everything is a liberal attack on your precious ideas.

A more interesting facet of Beck’s argument is his consistent apologies for the founding fathers. I love the excuses: Jefferson was poor, Jefferson was conflicted, Jefferson worried about the country with slavery. Why can‘t Glen just confront the founders’ flaws and deal with them? The founding fathers weren’t perfect, they don’t have to be.

I’d say Jefferson is another example of a liberal racist. Why doesn’t beck condemn the liberal Jefferson for his Deism and his support for the “soak the rich” attitudes of the French Revolution? Jefferson was an ardent supporter of Revolutionary government and their systematic confiscation of the aristocrats’ private property and only showed minor doubts when the murder of aristocrats became widespread.

Dang man, I think you might be getting a little too sophisticated for the folks at this site. Complex racial history that paints the founders as dimensional, flawed figures who developed both the positive AND negative aspects of our society is a bit more than people here can stomach. Ask half of the people here and they’ll tell you that the Founders were practically Christian prophets who only supported slavery because they were trying to free blacks from the horrors of living in Africa… =/

Actually, it is not surprising that Jefferson did little in response to the bloodshed in France during the French revolution since he was a revolutionary himself and had spent much of his time in France and considered the french kindred spirits. Jefferson saw what he wanted to see and turned a blind eye to the ugly truth. The reason there was no corresponding american bloodshed of aristocrats was due to the absence of a significant american aristocracy to be butchered. Jefferson was a flawed man to be sure, but I don’t think his possession of slaves overshadows his other contributions. To apply our morality of today to a man of the late eighteenth century is somewhat unfair. The statement that it was a fundamental contradiction in our nations foundation, however, is entirely fair and supported by the price america paid for this flaw during the civil war. Jefferson was a bit more than a liberal racist. I have no issue recognizing his flaws, many here do not seem to recognize his contributions, nor does this exhibit. It would be unfortunate to remember this statesman as solely a hypocritical slaveholder.

Anybody who dwells on something that happened two hundred years ago is a bona fide idiot. Like many others I’m sick to death of blacks making excuses for ther failures by blaming a situation so many years ago it has ABSOLUTELY NOTHING to do with black failure today.

Blacks can’t achieve, because of their own lack of abilities. Nothing else. America is the boiling pot of all colors, blacks are still unfortunately “slaves” to the government. Many are are welfare and live out the “slave” with television, house, and food provided to them. Most come from places where others take care of them and they are used to it. Not all blacks, but many. Look what the blacks are doing at the fairs with knife and fist. Muslims won’t change their ideas of Europeans, naturally whites are the demons. The blacks can’t change the fact that they still have slaves to themselves, like in the past. The racism card is as old as history itself, those that throw it are ignorant of the facts, or just plain ignorant.

      Hey no race,
It was over 150 years ago when slavery ended less than 10% of the population owned slaves at any giving point. The first slave ever owned in America was owned by a black man and lots of other blacks owned slaves after him. But you some how feel that give black the right to be grudge and hate whites.
Well if that’s the case than any white family opr white owned business that has been affected by black crime today should have that same rioght to hate and be grudge blacks for the actions of other blacks….RIGHT
I mean surely if you can judge a society today for the action of 10% of a society 150 years ago then you most certainly can justify a society of today judging a scoiety for actions of a small percentage of it’s population……..RIGHT

It’s not really about slavery. It’s about them hating themselves. They are trying to cause people to not see race, and see them as equal to everybody else, which people actually believe because of the propaganda concerning race. Why are they doing this? Because they want to make it easier for you to mix with them. They want to become white, and will never be happy until the day they do. They won’t actually become white, but they will make whites become like them; misery loves company. Doesn’t cancer of the human body work in the same way? Of course it does, as the cancer cells seek to turn good cells into cells which “act” like the cancer ones, and use those ‘acting’ cells to help them destroy those who have not turned into cancer yet, much like liberals they use trickery and deceit. Eventually, the body is destroyed of cancer if you allow it to happen and do not stop it in it’s tracks. In the case of race, blacks will eventually destroy the earth and all races thereof who do good things for the earth. They will destroy all tame and docile animals, through abuse. They will destroy all plants which cannot grow on their own. They are cancer, and it DOES correlate. God gave us clues and has correlated everything. Even black holes in space are cancer, as they are anti-matter and matter destroyers. Two is to four what 8 is to 16.

The blasts at Hiroshima and Nagasaki ended a war. The LEFT/Progressives/Socialists/Communists can call them what they want, but it does not portray thinking of Aug., 1945, it represents revisionist history of 2011. So tell me Bermuda Onion in what year did freed slaves enslave slaves. You can try to sell that crap to your next generation who you will more than likely raise to think like you, but no one with any sense is going to fall for it. So I will wait for you to google or research where freed slaves enslaved people.

And as far as people talking about Africans having slaves in Africa, it was not quite like that. There were always tribes in Africa. The stronger ones over took the weaker ones and like in any war, the ones who were voctorious had their way. Much like the civil war in The United Stated of AMERIKKA.

And to the person who said the slaves were freed and sent back to West Africa and sent to what is now called Libya. You so convenietley forgot to mention, why they were sent back didn’t you.
      TYPICAL.

While almost 5% of the population of the United States held slaves, in the south the number was over 8%. However, in New Orleans, 27% of the black people owned slaves. Not the whole population, mind you, but the black population.

My entire adult life there have been rules to give minorities a { fair } opportunity to advance, get promoted, get a job , and so on.They call it affirmative action, and lot of things, but I call it reverse discrimination. I believe it only allows minorities to fail or to perform at a the lower standard.People should want to perform their best out of pride in their race, family, and their own honor. I have seen and worked with minorities in and out of government service and everyone has the ability to perform with the best. It only comes apart when the race card is played by them or for them or to them.

In the end of days it says everything will be upside down, what was once right will now be wrong and what was wrong will now be right. Evil is moving hard against God and our belief in him. The stories that I see, nearly everyday, have Christians and Jews as the ones that are evil and that Islam is the religion of peace, love and tolerance. The longer people keep there heads in the sand the worse the battle back to the light will be. This is just an example of how things are being misrepresented, the progressives do the injustices and then blame the Christians, Jews, Conservatives and Republicans for the actions and will re-write history to try and hide the lies they tell. Remember that Evil always tells lies wrapped in a little bit of truth.

      @BERMUDA ONION:

Unfortunately there always has been slavery in the past and it is going on today in many Islamic countries where young girls and boys are kidnapped and forced to work for slavemasters.

Slavery was, is and never will be right but where ever there are human beings, one group will seek to dominate another group and enslave them. The new American salvery in the inner cities of the nation is the work of the progressives in Washington and is based on the premise that the inhabitants are too ignorant or incapable to learn to take care of themselves so the wonderful caretakers in Washington must keep them in total subserviance. It will NEVER be by admitted by the progressives that the premise that one race is superior to another, actually eminated from Darwin’s Theory of the Origin of Species. Hitler and many other dictators have used that premise to slaughter untold numbers of people in recent history.

Amazingly, the Capitalist system is the only system which allows a person of any race, color or creed to rise to his or her true potential and attain the goals they set for themselves in life. No other economic system allows that.

I’m wondering how long the black race is going to use slavery 150+ years ago as an excuse for expecting to be taken care of from the cradle to the grave? There are those black people who are smarter than the rest of you, who “get it” that sitting around whining about “it’s not my fault–my ancestors were slaves!” won’t buy them much or get them anywhere in life. And they discover that the barriers they might once have experienced are no longer there, and lo and behold, they SUCCEED and move up the economic ladder.

But too many accept this stupid lie that they are just poor little victoms and therefore should no it is their right to be supported and taken care of for life because over a century ago, this country, like most other countries in the world, allowed slavery. Yes, it happened. Yes, it was wrong. And yes, America has been trying to make amends ever since, but enough is enough, already.

Get OVER it!!! You can sit on your a$$es feeling sorry for yourselves and blaming everybody else in the world for your bad choices, and lack of ambition, playing the “professional victim”, or you can start making responsible choices, taking care of your OWN children (how about that 74% of black children born illegitimate?) and DO SOMETHING ON YOUR OWN. For God’s sake, the laws in our society are set up to give you every break in the world, if you would just GET OFF YOUR A$$ and at least TRY to do something on your own, instead of expecting the rest of us to do it

I think they love to pounce on Jefferson because of his supposed relationship with Sally Hemmings. This is a 2 for 1 as far as the victimization media goes. In their minds, not only did Jefferson own slaves, but he also committed sexual harrassment by supposedly seducing and fathering a child with his “employee”–Ms. Hemmings. What better way to prove that we are “all created equal” than to have the man who wrote it prove that it is so by bedding down with his African-American slave…and also, what better way to prove that The Founding Fathers were all a bunch of evil rich white men who have created an evil, sexist country full of sexual harrassment and descrimination than to invoke the example set by our third President–a man whom I’m sure any feminist will tell you should have been tried for rape–since Ms. Hemmings was still his slave after the affair. Jefferson was an imperfect man of contradictions–as imperfect as any man or any of our founding fathers. And, for that matter, as imperfect as our Constitution (remember, it says “to create a MORE perfect union–not a perfect one). But, you must remember, in the mind of liberals and of the left-wing, there is no room for imperfection. Government is their God–and it must be cleansed and made perfect. In their minds, if we could expose the rapist that existed within our founders, then we could more easily tear down the country and start over–which is just what liberals want.

There have been reports of Jefferson‘s shadow family since 1802 when Thomas Callender printed his articles attacking or attesting to Jefferson’s fathering children with Sally Hemmings.

Were Callender‘s stories the act of a diappointed office seeker in Jefferson’s time, a muck raker paid by the opposition ( as Callender was paid obtusely by Jefferson prior to the falling out), or a reporter in search of the truth? Those who really know are long gone. We are left to decide for ourselves.

As for other founding fathers holding slaves, TJ was the only one who wrote ALL men are created equal. What many do not recognize is that he did include a section in the Declaration addressing slave holding. Please read the Declaration of Independence in his original hand.

Franklin, an ablolitionist, was most influential in getting the DOI passed. And he allowed that section to be removed in order to get the 13 colonies to form a unified front against Great Britian. We cannot know what all transpired to create a country, all we can do is work within their framework to make thing better.
