Bed Bugs Stop Mail Delivery to Detroit Apartment Complex

There is an obvious joke that you can’t escape and that the Detroit News was quick to point out:

Rain, sleet, and snow can’t stop postal carriers from completing their rounds — but the fear of bedbugs has halted mail delivery to a senior citizen high-rise apartment building.
The local ABC affiliate  found that this decision, of course, is not popular with the buildings human residents.

Not getting mail can be a problem, especially when many residents are looking for those Social Security checks which arrive around the first of the month.

One additional factor involved — the carrier who refused to deliver the mail is pregnant and seemed to be concerned over the chemicals being used to de-bug the building.

There is hope. Mail delivery is now said to resume by Friday.

You would think an enterprising and unemployed person could find a way to make some money by going into the ‘bedbug elimination’ business.

Oh, I forgot…. let’s NOT forget the giant more poisonous poison ivy that is spreading all over the country because …in the words of NPR of carbon emissions and global change. Wonder if they believe the bed bugs are due to carbon emissions. I’ll need to listen to see if NPR reports the bed bug problemt as a side effect of global climate change.

I find it funny the lady interviewed said something about bed bugs are all over the world and it shouldn’t stop delivery (due to the adverts, I won’t watch the clip again). LOL I’ve yet to encounter a bed bug my whole life. But I digress, let’s just use DDT again and cure the problem! I’ll bet bed bugs are worse then DDT….blood suckers vs. chemicals…I’ll take the chemicals, please!

ok I live an hour north of detriot and so far up here there is no trouble however I heard on the news postal workers are protesting closing a sorting place AND only working 5 days if it goes through.. I had to laugh when they said NOBODY that works for the PO will be laid off they will just have to move.. I guess the government workers are “special”

She’s not worried about getting bedbugs. She’s worried about the chemicals they are using to kill them (she’s pregnant).

I would be quite happy if the postal service took a month or two break from delivering my mail. I have the good stuff sent to my parents‘ house and let the other stuff sit in the mailbox until it’s about ready to tip over. Seriously though, why is it that everyone in this country feels so entitled to everything? Our government fails at most everything it does, I’m not sure why a few days of missing mail comes as such a shock to anyone. At least there is an almost valid reason for it.

I’ve had a problem with bedbugs (I live in NY and got them as a little souvenir after visiting Manhattan)… There things don’t fly, so the mail carrier is grossly mistaken there. She can go in and deliver mail without getting any bugs on her as long as she doesn’t sit on any furniture inside the building. She can also wear lighter clothes if she wants to be sure the buggers don’t happen to hitch a ride with her. As far as the woman who speaks in the video, she needs a new stylist–let’s expedite her mail so she can get her Social Security check in a timely fashion and “get her hair did” properly. X-)

I do not like that you cannot turn off the advertisments. if you change your mind and decide you dont want to wait through the ad–it keeps playing and doesnt respond to stop! that is ANNOYING

I guess it‘s because it’s an ABC local station and since they probably have low ratings, they need to force us to watch the adverts to keep their organisation from going under.

The carriers could just drop the mail off at the door. I don‘t think they’d get bedbugs then.

Personally, I think bedbugs are among some species that, if they go extinct, only the hard core, crazy enviromentalists would mourn.

If I read this right, it isn’t the bed bugs that scared off the postal worker but the fear of the chemicals that may be used to treat the condition. Of course, since I have never treated for bed bugs before, I am not sure what is done. Is this similar to those bug bombs that fumigate the whole place? Or is some local treatment like a can of Raid? If it is a more general fumigation, then I understand the workers concerns seeing as how they were supposedly pregnant. If it is like spraying a can of Raid, then unless they are spraying near where the post is delivered than I imagine it is an over reaction.

Maybe we have bed bugs too… judging from the lack of enthusiasm of my mail deliverer. I have checked the bed, and don’t see any of those nasty creatures…. so it must be something else. Hmmm.
