Before and After: See the Man Given $22M for Two Years of Solitary Confinement Without a Trial

DWI Arrestee Awarded $22M After Two Years of Solitary Confinement Without Trial

A New Mexico man has been awarded $22 million this week after it was found his constitutional rights were violated when he was held in solitary confinement for two years and even had to yank his own rotting tooth out of his mouth.

Stephen Slevin, 58, from New Mexico, as reported by the Daily Mail, received the huge 10-figure sum after bringing accusations against Dona Ana County jail for leaving him to rot after he was arrested for Driving While Intoxicated (DWI).

Authorities didn’t give him the healthcare he needed and throughout his incarceration treated him inhumanely. Albuquerque civil rights attorney Matthew Coyte said his client then began to deteriorate while in isolation, according to CNN:

“They threw him in solitary and then ignored him,” said Coyte. “He disappeared into delirium, and his mental illness was made worse by being isolated from human contact and a lack of medical care.”

While standing outside the Santa Fe courthouse earlier this week, Mr. Slevin told reporters that the real point of his lawsuit was raising awareness about such inhumane treatment and trying to ensure that such an egregious breech of state power would not reoccur.

While he is out from his cell now, Slevin still suffers from Post Traumatic Stress Disorder as a result of the mental and  physical mistreatment corrections officers in New Mexico inflicted upon him.

MSNBC has more:

Slevin put his confinement in stark terms.

“Prison officials were walking by me every day, watching me deteriorate. Day after day after day, they did nothing, nothing at all, to get me any help,” he said.

The 58-year-old was arrested in August 2005 and charged with driving while intoxicated and receiving a stolen vehicle near Las Cruces.

Civil rights attorney Matthew Coyte view it as a victory for basic Constitutional rights. “It‘s not good for Mr Slevin for sure and it’s not good for this country. It has to stop,” he said.

I can‘t imagine what it’s like to be so insecure that you‘d marry a woman you don’t even like. It must have been for sex since you‘d have known when you asked her to marry you that you hadn’t really loved her. I have an acquaintance who is extremely overweight and he’d marry anyone that would give him the time of day. I‘m sure he’ll find someone else who is desperate and then he too will feel like you do.

I‘m sure happy I’ve got a great wife. It makes life wonderful.

      See here.

      Federalist Papers #84
      http://www.constitution.org/fed/federa84.htm

“The creation of crimes after the commission of the fact, or, in other words, the subjecting of men to punishment for things which, when they were done, were breaches of no law, and the practice of arbitrary imprisonments, have been, in all ages, the favorite and most formidable instruments of tyranny. The observations of the judicious Blackstone, in reference to the latter, are well worthy of recital: “To bereave a man of life, [says he] or by violence to confiscate his estate, without accusation or trial, would be so gross and notorious an act of despotism, as must at once convey the alarm of tyranny throughout the whole nation; but confinement of the person, by secretly hurrying him to jail, where his sufferings are unknown or forgotten, is a less public, a less striking, and therefore a more dangerous engine of arbitrary government.” And as a remedy for this fatal evil he is everywhere peculiarly emphatical in his encomiums on the habeas corpus act, which in one place he calls “the BULWARK of the British Constitution.”"

Mitt Romney involved in Medicare Fraud

In 1990 Bain Capital purchased the controlling interest in Damon Corp. a Medical Testing Company…. Mitt Romney joined the Board of Damon Corp. to help manage the Company…… two whistle blowers tipped off the government and Medicare Fraud Charges were brought against Damon Corp. In 1996 Damon Corp Plead Guilty to Frauding Medicare, they were fined $35,273,141.00 as a criminal fine in addition to $83,726,859.00 to resolve related liabilities.. Total Fines 119 Million Dollars.

This represented a recovery of $3 for every $1 that they Stole from Federal and State Healthcare Programs…The U.S. Attorney who prosecuted the case is quoted as saying “A case pure and simple of Corporate Greed Run Amok”. The Company went Bankrupt in 2002, thousands of jobs were lost. Bain walk away with a Profit of 12 Million Dollars. Companies close all the time, what’s at stake are the crimes, not job losses.

At one point Romney denied knowledge of the crimes and later yes he flip flopped to say he was aware and on top of the problem. Serial flip flopper, sure and then some. This story is important because the Obamabots have instant access to all medicare and justice records as well the Obama administration has been playing fast and loose with facts that help Obama. Feds say Romney did not help uncover the investigation and that Corning later bought the company and cleaned up the mess. Dems used medicare crimes (Columbia

TECHENGINEER11, Yuo are probably right, there probably is more to this story and my guess would be since the guy was drunk, he more then likley resisted a little and became unrulely, however these officers are supposed to be trained for this sort of thing, and as professionals, should overlook his behavior to an extent. It seems to me these “professionals” took it a little too personally and vioated his rights. No one is above the law and I think a dose of their own medicine would be poetic justice in this case (just not for 2 years) a couple of weeks should drive home the point.

“Exactly” how he feels? Really? Solitary Confinement doesn‘t mean you’re locked up with a solitary roomate with whom you either play the card game, or – more realistically – have sex. THAT form of incarceratoin seems more what your’re sentence was. And, that might be appealing once you understand the “prize” isn’t money and comes whenever roomie decides it comes…WHENEVER.

Tell me, was yours a judgement by your peers, or did you opt for a bench trial Either is a crap shoot, but judges can be more predictiable. Peer is a relative term; and perhaps at least some were your relatives.

Researchers, penologists, [Huh? What’s that, Loretta? (Loretta is my assistant.) O. Right. I’m sorry: “PEANololgists” say those sentenced in this manner generally not only get used to the life, they actually come to enjoy many aspects of it. However, it may take more, or less, than 2 years. And, dental hygeine is not overlooked. Your teeth likely get pulled much sooner than this guy’s. You may even want that, to be; well – frank – about it.

Lawsuits are much more rare than are funerals. Darn those pesky teeth.

Marriage is much older than county jails & dentists. Anthropologists suggest it is rarely solitary, if ever. Prizes are optional via Insuance companies & vary widely. Caution is advised in attempting to cash out early as the prize is often not awarded and one often ends up in the county jail anyway; and not generally in solitary.

TH3,Your comments about the GOP are pretty much correct. Our 2 party system was specifically designed behind the backs of the American people so that no matter who is in power, we get hosed. That‘s why I’ve been pretty thankful Obama was elected. He moved so far, so fast that millions woke up. Unfortunately, they are being lulled back to sleep by imposters trying to grab the tea party while being as big govt. as it gets. The problem with Ron Paul is he takes it too far the other way. He’s not wrong about most of what he says, it’s just that America has been steadily lied to and moved in this direction slowly, over 110 years or so. Ron Paul is a shock to the system. A badly needed one, but too shocking for most to digest. He will not be president, but I‘m very glad he’s in the debates. It is the people of the next generation who can take more of what he espouses and implement it If we can keep waking more people up to the Mitts and Newts and keep getting constitutionalists into congress and into our city and state govts., we have a fighting chance. The worst case scenario this time around would be to put a Newt Gingrich into the White House to preside over the demise Obama has so accellerated our country toward. If people don’t demand constitutional adherance from their reps and senators, even with a GOP president, we have no hope. Santorum is also big govt., but he is an honest man who admits his mistakes and explains his reasoning. He’s not perfect, but we can do wo

Every one of the cops, jail employees, prosecutors and judges in that county should be put into the same prison for two years. They all knew. Everyone reading this is similarly at risk.

I have had a family member killed by a drunk driver who was given a trial and convicted. Since this guy DID NOT have a trial how can you say he is guilty unless you are one of those Obama supporters who thinks it ok to lock someone up for 2 years without a TRIAL. Damn you are a MORON and you make me want to puke …people like you that think you are a conservative are ruining this country!

Texas paper (&TV station report) that FBI Homeland Security Taskforce arrest a local man for child pronography. That type of arrest is usually done by local law enforcemenrt agencies. The only spokesman to appear was the local sheriff.
The agents need practice in dealing with local cases once they take over.

Punishment yes, but not inhumane treatment. Are you kidding, with the new laws in place, they can incarcerate anyone for any reason. This atty and this “criminal” are heroes for bringing this to the attention of the world. One of the worst jobs in the world is a criminal defense atty,(bashed by everyone) yet they are the ones fighting for YOUR constitutional rights.

So the next time you say Guilty without even listening to fact, just because a police officer or DA said so, you should keep in your mind, how many wrongful conviction (NY leads the pack) by false evidence, evidence planting, and not giving proper disclosure to the defense atty. Remember it is Innocent before Guilty in America. Not the other way around. This isn’t an episode or Law and Order (or as I like to call it (no) Law and (dis) Order).
