Ben & Jerry’s Re-Names Flavor ‘Apple-y Ever After’ to Advocate for Gay Marriage in England

Ben & Jerrys Renames Flavor to Support Gay Marriage in England | Apple y Ever AfterBen & Jerry’s is known for its delicious (and offensive) ice cream flavors. But over the years, the company has also distinguished itself for its overt and controversial opinions on social and political issues.

The company’s leaders — Ben Cohen and Jerry Greenfield have taken stances against military spending and they have defended Occupy Wall Street. These, of course, are only two examples (there was also that embarrassing Jeremy Lin-inspired fortune cookie flavor, which the company inevitably apologized for). Now, Ben & Jerry’s has changed one of its flavors in support of marriage equality.

While the company has supported gay marriage rights here in America in the past, its newest flavor-change and campaign is geared toward helping a same-sex marriage bill pass in England (we recently reported on how the Catholic Church is responding to this proposal). So, to support gay nuptials, Ben & Jerry’s has renamed its Apple Pie flavored ice cream, “Apple-y Ever After.”

A press release published on the company’s UK web site reads, in part:

In 2009 we renamed our legendary flavour Chubby Hubby to ‘Hubby Hubby’ to celebrate gay marriage legalisation in our home state of Vermont, in the US. This March as the UK government debates whether to legalise same sex marriage, we’ve partnered with gay rights organisation, Stonewall, to raise awareness about the importance of marriage equality by renaming our Apple Pie flavour, Apple-y Ever After!

If you think that Civil Partnership is the same as marriage, think again! Show your support and help convince members of parliament that it‘s time to say ’I do’ to same sex marriage!

The same release proclaims that “social justice is at the core of Ben & Jerry’s values. Additionally, there are opportunities on the company’s web site for customers to write to members of parliament to advocate for the passage of the bill. Supporters can also support the proposal by “marrying” someone of the same sex on Facebook through a special app that has been developed.

“Because everyone is equal and deserves to live Apple-y Ever After,” concludes the Ben & Jerry’s statement. While this is a chipper conclusion to say the least, The Telegraph’s Will Heaven finds the press release and partisan flavoring less-than-satisfying. He writes:

Reading that PR announcement made me want to bulk-buy Häagen-Dazs. Why? Not because I’m a crazed homophobe, but because I’m so irritated by my food telling me what I should believe.

This kind of crass marketing technique has “Democrat” written all over it. They’re shamelessly using a delicate social issue to make money. It’s a very American style of Left-wingery – and that‘s why I don’t think it will work here.

We can just about stomach Fair Trade chocolate or support – for example – the Body Shop’s excellent campaign against child sex trafficking. But ice cream that says, “buy me, or you’re a bigot”? No thanks.

    Once Obama takes over the new flavor will be “ Sharia swirl”… then the “Pro gay” flavors will be no more. For the life of me, I don’t understand how gay supporters support an administration that supports groups that stone gays.???? What am I missing?

      The best way to shut their mouths up is to dry up their businesses, which is what many of us are doing.

      Okay, I’ll grant you that it might not be irrelevant to you. Feel free to boycott to your heart’s content. But to state that those of us who don’t let politics factor into our purchasing choices when, in our opinion, they offer the best product for the price, is a little unfair. Now, if a conservative company were to start their own line of gourmet ice cream that meets or exceeds B&J’s quality, I would absolutely switch. But that hasn’t happened so I will continue to purchase the superior product.

      One thing that I truly find strange, though, is that (and I know I am generalizing here, but it’s just a *general* trend I have noticed), when a group of leftists boycott over a political platform they are decried as whiners by the right; but then the same sort of activity is encouraged in fellow right-wingers.

    Too bad..my favorite flavor was cherry garcia…I wont be buying anymore of this ice cream ever. Ben and Jerry should stick with making great flavored ice cream..not jumping on social causes. You will never see another dime from me.

    This ice cream has been off my list for years, I am married and have been for over 36 years. No one has the right to belittle my marriage with this crap. Just give them a contract to sign, I know it is just a word to some people, but it is one I will not give up. We all gave up the word gay and we all know there is nothing gay about they are doing. If I upset someone by talking this way then so be it, get over it. I do not bend over to the presser.

      It seems cute and effective, but let’s try that out for size. (Please note that none of the items below are intended as an ethical parallel; just trying out the logic of the statement.) We’ll start with so-called victimless crimes.
      “If you don’t like porn, then don’t watch”
      “If you don‘t like shoplifting then don’t shoplift”
      “If you don’t like illegal downloading….”
      “If you don’t like prostitution….”
      “If you don’t like cheating on college entrance exams….”
      “If you don’t like insurance fraud….”
      “If you don’t like broken storefronts in the name of left-wing protests, then don’t participate.”
      Crimes with victims:
      If you you don’t like murder, don’t kill people. If you don’t like war, don’t wage it.
      Etc.
      Basically, your argument is “If you don’t like an activity, don’t engage in it because (I believe) it doesn’t affect anyone else.”

      @Encinom – The people of England don’t want gay marriage any more than the people of the US do. Both societies, however, do favor civil unions and all the legal protective rights that go with it. Why in the world isn’t that good enough for you people?

      If you destroy the concept of marriage (a union between a man and a woman) then any consenting adults (although the left seem to favor child rape at this point) can claim the rite of marriage. 3 women and four men? Why not? The whole institution would break down just as it did in the Netherlands.

    *deep sigh* i don’t even know where to start on this one…or Ben & Bernies, ummmmmmmmm, i mean Ben & Jerrys……….ANYWAYS……..so i will simply say this. as i live back here, and as the main ‘home’ of B&J is 15-20 minutes from here, i have been able to observe, follow, and see how they ‘operate’/impact a number of things up close and personal–and i don’t mean in the ice cream world either.
    sure, the ice cream is great and all, and true, they hold ‘free cone days’ all over, BUT i firmly believe and will say that this whole thing is a smoke screen to ‘reel’ people in. my simple yet sage council is to NOT get sucked in and/or ‘hooked’—hook, line, and sinker. things are not always what they appear to be, and ice cream is NOT always ‘just ice cream.’

    The word “Marriage” is just a word, that’s all. The state doesn’t decide what the understanding of marriage is, and so the marriage of gays is just a word. But they don‘t actually get married and that’s why a gay marriage will never last. There is no spiritual union, and they will cheat on each other like nothing you have ever seen, and they can’t multiply their fruit in a child which helps them collude in a spiritual union. No, they will constantly burn deep inside for everything but each other until it drives them apart wildly searching for that which is far from them.

      I’ve never bought it, and never will. Haagen Dazs is so much better anyway. Better ingredients too…. no guar gum, locust bean gum, carageenan, or any other crap. Stopped buying Breyer’s because all the fillers they started adding. The way you tell a good ice cream is by how fast it melts. The faster it melts, the better (more natural) it is.

    I think all this business is stupid. Why do they need to make their ice cream controversial? It’s pretty good ice cream and they could sell it with out all of these demented names. I wouldn’t buy this ice cream simply because it supports gay marriage. But I do like apple pie AND ice cream so it’s probably really good. So besides the fact that it’s so expensive, they have lost any sales from me because I won’t support this idiocy.

      Turkey Hill, Blue Bunny, excellent. Only buy Hill when it’s on sale, about every five weeks-it’s the best, add vanilla soda to Black Cherry Vanilla for the best ice cream soda ever. YUM. I am sure there will be more great brand wherever you live. Never have bought the boys stuff, too expensive and I really do not like politics with my ice cream. Have a happy day with good ice cream with no agenda folks!

      This bigot tries to buy local. I grow much of what I eat.

      My money is kind of like my vote, in that it is mine, and I get to decide where it goes. If a company sides with evil, then I do not buy their products. GE is another company that does not get my money. I do believe I would buy a Ford if in the market for a new car. I am not going to dump money into Obama motors though.

      My wife loves coffee, so when Starbucks started supporting the gay marriage rights deal, we stopped buying their cofee, and purchase from a local chain.

      Same sex marriage is not marriage period…You can not base the privileged of marriage on acts, and those acts being homosexual acts..their is no union in homosexual relations….there is not the ability to bring about progeny…..and that is the bases for family and marriage….Do people really want to have marriage redefined as union of any age same sex partner based on mutual mast***ation and adoption by one or both spouse?? Does this not sound dysfunctional from the start?? And some how this arrangement will benefit society ?? Talk about creating a messed up and lost generation…no one knowing who they are, because they don’t know where they came from…a totalitarian state favorite dream is what it would be….
