Bering Strait Tunnel to Connect U.S. and Russia?

Bering Strait Tunnel to Connect Two Biggest Continents

The U.S. and Russia have cooperated in space, and now the two countries are adding high seas to the mix, having set their minds on connecting the Eurasian and American continents via an underwater tunnel in the Bering Strait according to Russia Today.

Originally conceived in 1906, during the rule of the last Russian Czar, Nicholas II, the project had been deemed unrealistic by many, and put on hold by world wars and revolutions, but now seems to have recaptured the hearts of businessmen on three continents.  The tunnel is expected to be twice the size of the Channel Tunnel connecting Britain and France.  The 65 mile giant would be the key component of a 3,700 mile railroad reaching from Yakutsk, Russia to Canada’s British Columbia.

Russia Today adds:

“The project is already underway,” said an official from the Russian Ministry of Economic Development, Viktor Razbegin. “The rail track to Yakutsk that we have been building for the past 15 years has always been seen as the first part of the road. It will be finished in just about a year. However, the most important is the political decision which hasn’t been taken yet. There are multiple countries involved, and it will be hard.”

If finally approved, the ambitious project will demand a tremendous effort that will make use of Russian, American, Japanese and Chinese human and natural resources.

As of now, neither Alaska nor Siberia have railway links that reach the extremes of their respective territories.

Tourists are expected to appreciate the opportunity to travel overland from Europe to New York City. The journey through the whole range of different climates would be both spectacular and educational. It would also save travelers time – the tunnel would cross the International Date Line, changing clocks by nearly a full day.

Of course, the tunnel would also play a significant role in the transportation of raw materials from inland Siberia to the US and beyond, with the potential for freight rail to carry up to 100 million tons annually. The tunnel could also be used to develop a link between North America and Asia in terms of renewable energy transmission.

According to various estimates, the project will cost anywhere from $30 billion to $65 billion, and would be paid off over the next 15 years. The epic project could be completed by 2045.

There was a plan to build a bridge but a tunnel is more practical.

Chinese goods will be shipped to American stores at 90 miles an hour. You know Democrats have purchased all the land around where the tunnel will come up. Will the Alaskan Nation negotiate this deal. The Federal Government must step aside. Its now Alaskan Republics business.

America does not want Canadian or Alaskan oil so it will be shipped to China.

Alaska must separate from America because the US really cheated Russia out of Alaska. The Americans have decided to use Dutch Windmill power and will return to the stone age shortly as the world moves forward.

If there is to be NO drilling for oil in Alaska, then there should be no rail track that connects to the purposed tunnel in Alaska, simply because building the foundation and laying of the said track will endanger wildlife native to the Alaskan territories and upset the ecosystem as well as the eco-warrior LOL….

At first, yes I thought this would be an awesome idea – as it would create easier holidays to America, and it would connect (Asia + Europe) to United States of America and Canada by using public transport.

Then i researched this idea, and i realised how much of a stupid and pathetic idea this really is. Here are the reasons why:
      - Would make a very high interest target for terrorists – (In another words it may get blown up shortly after completing the project)
      - Financially it would cost a fortune – and this would cause many complaints and could cause riots and other problems from a waste of tax payer’s money.
      - Also this project would use so many resources – which would be a complete waste as it may not be long lasting.
      - And the engineers would be building this tunnel where earthquakes and very common – which could cause the tunnel to be short lasting.
      - Would also be dangerous and difficult to actually build the tunnel – causing a danger to lives.
      - Would take a very long time to complete – and so unexpected problems may arise.
      - The tunnel would be being built to two isolated terrains, where no one lives therefore both countries would also have to produce transport links from the tunnel to other locations.
      - Alaska has a lot of biodiversity – therefore creating transport links from the tunnel to the existing transport links could disrupt biodiversity – and so its an ignorant idea.
      - The train would likely to be running on fossil fuels and not renewable ener

I’m a bit confused here. How many people would be going from 6-months of night Alaska to 6-months of night Siberia? What, 20 Eskimos and a few seals a day? What purpose would this serve that an airplane or boat could not do cheaper and/or faster?

The Chunnel between France and England makes economic sense, it facilitates trade and commerce and tourism between the two places. A tunnel between two nearly arctic hell holes, I don’t get it. What am I missing here?

Most likely freight, don’t you think? Maybe the Chinese will contrive to siphon off some of that fabulous Canadian tar sands sludge. A few tourists may opt to go back and forth this way rather than flying, sort of like really adventurous types today might take the Transsiberian. It shouldn’t be difficult to control immigration coming through a tunnel under the Bering Strait, and the idea of its becoming some sort of invasion route is simply laughable. The main questions this article leaves unanswered are what sort of government, private or hybrid concern will build the thing, and with whose money? I find it interesting that Lyndon LaRouche, of all people, has been pushing this project for years. And why has no one fingered our old friend, George Soros? Surely he has a hand in this. . . .

Laugh all you want. It doesn’t change the fact that reclaiming AK is one of the most cherished goals inside the Kremlin. Their MO is usually to create “economic ties” to a region they want back; send in Russians to work there, airdropping Russian passports to anybody that wants them there; then walking right in to “protect” their people.

-“It would be reasonable for Russia to lay claim to Alaska; it was part of the Russian Empire for a long time.” A framed satellite image of the Bering Strait that separates Alaska from Russia like a thread hangs from his office wall. “It’s not there for no reason,” he says with a sly grin.
      http://www.registan.net/index.php/2008/12/29/igor-panarin-the-russian-stratfor/

And while many dismiss Igor’s predictions and claims as fantasy … one group who does not resides within the Kremlin. Sergey Lavrov, Putin’s hand-picked Foreign Minister, loves the notion of a post-American world, and is a fan of Igor’s work. Not to mention Igor himself is former KGB along with Putin, and his studies and conclusions fully backed by the Kremlin.
      http://newamerica.net/publications/articles/2009/disintegrating_u_s_critics_come_unglued_9681

Further, I‘m not saying it’s a forgone conclusion they get their way. Rather, my concern is your dismissal of their desires and possible attempts as “laughable”, in the face of evidence to the contrary.

      @ThaBigPerm:

What I think is “laughable” is the idea of an outright military invasion of Alaska, as long as the US has anything approaching its present intelligence and defense capabilities. I certainly wouldn’t rule out some sort of softening-up process, by way of trade and/or settlement. But I’d worry more about the Caucasian, Ukrainian, Baltic and Central Asian “near abroad” than about Alaska, with or without a tunnel.

We are told that building a fence on our southern border will cost $85 billion so we cannot afford it, but this $65 billion, no problem.
As for invasion through a single narrow tunnel head, that seems pretty far-fetched, although one can imagine a scenario in which a tour bus turns out to be a commando operation, seizes a foothold at the Alaska end, and presto, our coldest state becomes a new Mongolia.

I’ve seen a plethora of stupid ideas out there recently, but I think this has some promise. I’ve been buying products from and selling products to Asia for many years and another transportation route would be great for goods. If this project was funded properly, it could create many long-term jobs and end up with a valuable asset. There’d be a delivery system for selling resources and and finished good to Asia. We have the most natural gas in the world and this would provide a way to deliver it to hungry customers.

I’m a skeptical guy in general, but I think this is worth reviewing instead of a knee-jerk negative reaction. I doubt billions would be spent on train-tourism, but this could enable trillions in trade and many thousands of productive domestic jobs.

If you look at history, the most valuable train routes went where there weren’t any roads. Does the Union-Pacific sound familiar? There are plenty of technical problems to overcome, but that’s where American invention can produce a solution and charge a profit.

Crossing a thousand miles using a single rail line and a very long underwater tunnel for an invasion and supply route? Sounds like a very good way for an invasion force to a few million soldiers to me. Besides, it seems to me that the stronger trade ties that two countries have with each other the less likely one is to invade the other is.

We are no longer a super power because of our trade with Asia and their use of slave labor to produce the goods we use. You got rich, middle class America has suffered, this will just be another nail in the coffin of the middle class.

To continue the excellent point made by @sWampy the problem with virtually every trade deal, which by the way speaks volumes about what they are really about, is that they don’t include a requirement for the cheap labor country to insure they will progress towards a living wage for the workers. Without that these deals are nothing more than the wealthy exploiting the cheap labor. The overall world economy does not improve because at $2 a day these workers cannot afford to buy anything from the US or anyone else. After the initial order of machinery for their factories, trade with the US goes down significantly.

An underwater tunnel along the proverbial “Ring of Fire” Pacific hotbed of fault-lines.

    What could possibly go wrong?

It looks to be significantly north of the Ring of Fire (which runs along the Aleutians), but point well taken — it is a disaster of some sort (almost certainly financial) waiting to happen.

Wait, Wait. We can’t drill for oil but we can build an underwater rail system along as others have pointed out, multiple fault lines.

I dunno, 1 seems to be much more safe then the other.

So that is how China plans to take obtain the natural resources of Canada and the USA to support its billions in population. Why not just role out a red carpet for their invasion?

One of the dumbest ideas. Let’s build a tunnel where there are no roads or rail tracks. They will get over to the northern area of Alaska and have to get on a plane. Dumb – dumb – dumb!
