Bernie Goldberg to Bill O’Reilly: Sometimes Cable News Hosts Have To ‘Shut The Hell Up’

A dispute over manners turned into a demeaning insult, Bill O’Reilly suggested in a conversation with Bernie Goldberg on Monday.
While O’Reilly was on vacation, Rep. Charlie Rangel called fill-in host Laura Ingraham “just a pretty girl,” – a comment that sparked an on-air tizzy between the two. Rep. Rangel later apologized for his comments, but Goldberg said Ingraham was lucky that’s all the guest decided to say.
It was her constant interruptions, Goldberg said, that set a frustrating tone for the entire interview and landed her with those harsh words.
“There ought to be a rule on these shows: The host asks the question and then shuts the hell up,” Goldberg said. He couldn‘t convey his entire argument because O’Reilly quickly interrupted. O’Reilly said hosts often have to interrupt because guests skirt the question or go off on another topic altogether that better serves their own agendas.
Regardless of manners or interviewing style, O’Reilly said Rep. Rangel’s comment was inappropriate. “It wasn‘t the ’pretty girl’ thing that was – and I think Rangel was wrong in saying it – it was ‘just a pretty girl’, just is the key word there,” he said.
Goldberg and O’Reilly were able to end their conversation congenially with a joke that Goldberg himself was “a pretty face with nothing upstairs,” when he appeared on television. For a glimpse into how Rep. Rangel and Ingraham’s interview went, check out the video below.

Posted on August 23, 2011 at 7:55amI saw the interview. I love Laura, but I have to agree with Bernie this time. Rangel disgusts me, but he wasn’t able to say five words before Laura interrupted him. I have almost NEVER seen ANY politician, Lib or Conservative, give straight answers to even the most innocuous questions. Charlie wasn’t any different. I understand Laura was trying to hold his feet to the fire (Pretty Boy does that on his radio show) but sometimes it’s better to let the idiot Libs talk themselves into their own holes. . .

Posted on August 23, 2011 at 8:19amRangel was purposely being condescending. He knew exactly what he was saying. Bernie said it was a generational thing. I don’t agree, Rangel’s been in politics long enough to know what is PC. Laura did interrupt a lot but he wasn’t answering her questions and she was trying to get answers before their time was up.

Posted on August 23, 2011 at 8:58amWhen I watch, I see Rangel trying to bloviate through the interview eating up time with long pauses so he doesn’t have to answer her questions. I think she did a terrific job of stopping him from doing this. Billy recognized Laura outshone him and he got mad. So he has that hack Bernie G come on and scold her so Billy can say “see, it was Bernie that thought this” and he saves himself. Didn’t work.
Now for Billy Boy O’Reilly – NO ONE interrupts guests/co-hosts like he does.and so where is Bernie Hack then? It was obvious BO (same as his idol OBummer…hummm) was trying to take away her glory. I haven’t been watching him but will watch when Laura hosts. Watch, it will be Juan from now on because Billy can’t stand it when someone else does a better interview.
Anyone else notice how since the OBummer interview, Bill has really been pandering to the left? I think he is disgusting.

Posted on August 23, 2011 at 9:18amThe BIGGER issue is this. We are a nation of people that talk and talk and talk, BUT never do anything to back it up. All talk and no action has brought us to the place we are in this country. Oh and yes…we are tooooo thin skinned about everyhting. Laura in her interview is a good example. She was offended. THAT’s HER PROBLEM. FREE SPEECH…what is that? We have no freedom to say anything in this country anymore. Or haven’t you noticed.

Posted on August 23, 2011 at 10:38amRangel’s remark was simply inappropriate ..
what if Rangel had said the exact same thing to a male anchor… he was just a pretty boy! WTH? …. Rangel was trying to make her feel irrelevant… do not equate her attractiveness .. with being stupid for Laura Ingraham is anything but!
She has a Batchelors degree from Dartmouth, and a Law Degree from Virginia School of Law,
I do not agree with Bernie Goldberg at all.
If Goldberg is angry over being interrupted … then Bill O’Reilly should really infuriate him.
just sayin’

Posted on August 23, 2011 at 7:36amDo you not remember that O’Reilly interviewed Obama and essentially soft-gloved it – after a long time, he now brings up stuff he knew about then, but somehow neglected to pin Obummer on. I see O’Reilly as a NYC old-school dem. Call him a conservative dem, if you will. He ain’t looking out for me – I do not want him to. I rarely watch FOX anymore either. I cannot stand one syllable from Beckel, so that ruins the FIVE, and Sean has on Rinos and Libs – and I then wish to choke morons like Rangle or that creep Columbia “Professor” guy…… all mouthpieces for prog agenda, and part of our problem – not part of a solution. So call me narrow-minded, but I do not need to hear the left’s garbage – I know it by heart since I have been programmed since birth with that crap. No more FOX for me.

Posted on August 23, 2011 at 9:14amI agree with your assessment wholeheartedly. O’Reilly was very liberal when he worked in Boston. He puts on this “Fair and Balanced” act but shows his liberal leanings far too often. He’s really a Boston Republican (A slightly left of center Democrat). Most of the other Fox folks are more left than he with the exception of Hannity but, his act is growing old also. Laura, at least, stands up for the more conservative thought in this country.

Don’t ask it and then answer it yourself which is what Laura and Bill tend to do. It gets irritating because I want to hear what these people are saying the then “decide” myself which is what Fox constantly reiterates. “we report, you decide.”

Oreilly, Cavuto, Hannity, all of them interupt their guests incessantly. Oreilly is the biggest blowhard in media, a self-important moron who has the over 60 crowd fooled. Glenn was the ONLY voice of reason on that network since Obama cut their ****** off shortly after coming into office. There IS NO truth in media, except on the Blaze and on Beck’s show. Posted on August 23, 2011 at 9:46amI stopped watching The Factor because of Bill O‘Reilly’s constant interruption of his ‘guests.’ It is rude and condecending to the extreme to do that to someone invited to interview on the program – even if they are stupid, clueless and/or liberal with significant behavioral issues. Most of the people can be pre-screened to determine their likelyhood of these behaviors. If the excuse to interrupt is because the guest refuses to answer the question or defers directly to ‘talking points’ – then find someone to interview that will answer the question(s), or make them sign a statement of understanding pre-show which indicates they WILL ANSWER the questions of the host or will be escorted out of the studio. I won‘t watch this program anymore because I don’t enjoy watching repeated acts of rudeness and condescension, even toward people whose arguments are so ‘off the reservation’ that they could never be logically defended. No great loss, even if ‘The Factor’ has the ratings it does… they’ve obviously found some people that like watching this sort of programming.

Posted on August 23, 2011 at 6:31amWell, Chris Matthews is the expert at interruption, but O’Rielly is, basically, a bully. I’ve long felt, which is why I seldom watch him, that the spin doesn’t stop with him, it starts with him. He lets liberals have the last word, and that is where the spin comes in. I wish Laura would have let Rangel finish, but, frankly why is he even on the show. He expected the O’Rielly treatment, to get to say what he wanted to say, and she wouldn’t allow it. O’Rielly had the opportunity to really interview Obama, but decliined to ask anything other than softball questions, “out of respect”.
