BET Founder to Obama: ‘You Don’t Get People to Like You By Attacking Them or Demeaning Their Success’

Add the founder of BET to the list of people who don‘t think the ’Buffett Rule’ is such a good idea.

Robert Johnson, who founded the Black Entertainment Television network in 1980, appeared on “Fox News Sunday” and said President Barack Obama needs to adjust his message to one that’s not “attacking” the wealthy for their success.

“I think the president has to recalibrate his message,” Johnson said. “You don’t get people to like you by attacking them or demeaning their success. I grew up in a family of 10 kids, first one to go to college, and I’ve earned my success. I’ve earned my right to fly private if I choose to do so. And by attacking me, is not going to convince me that I should take a bigger hit because I happen to be wealthy.”

Johnson joked that it was like “the old Ethel Merman approach to life — I‘ve been poor and I’ve been rich and I happen to like rich better. It doesn‘t mean I’m a bad guy.”

While not mentioning the Buffett Rule directly, Johnson certainly seemed to imply his distaste for the plan, saying Obama should not be “demagoguing” people who are successful.

“I went in business to create jobs, create value, create opportunity for myself and my investors and that’s what the president should be praising, Johnson said.

You want us to believe that you didn’t know this piece of crap stood on re-distribution of America’s wealth from the rich to the poor? That OBAMMY’S daddy was a communist and so was his mommy? That many personal associations of OBAMMY‘S are with known communist’s? That you actually voted for OBAMMY because he is black with everything else about the turd not even being a factor? I think poor blacks and poor whites are more worried about buying food than what this guy has to say. An increase of a percent or two on the tax of this guys income is something he wouldn’t even notice. Maybe the accountants he pays will tell him about it, while his servants serve him dinner. And he‘ll stand up and declare he’s done with being a job creator. The taxes are just too much. He ‘t

But when the free clinic shuts down in a poor neighborhood, which this guy thinks is the solution to the deficit, and poor people and their children don’t get treated for ear infections, or lung infections from cut skin infections.

According to this guy, that’s what America is all about. Every man for himself. The churches and neighbors will take care of all the poor, and pay their medical expenses he says. Sure. @JZS

      really? thats your argument?

Someone not affording medical care is NOT this guy’s fault. He didn’t make them poor.
Someone not affording food isn’t this guys fault. He didn’t take their food.
Someone not affording clothing isn’t this guys fault. He doesn’t owe them clothes.
Someone unable to provide for their children is that person’s responsibility. Not this guy’s.
Yes, he could be charitable (most rich people are, and don’t you lie: YES THEY ARE)

You think he has too much and should “share.” But he doesn’t want to, so you use the force of gov’t to make him share, without having that guilty feeling of stealing, after all, it was govt taxation really, not stealing. Then you justify it further by using to fund free clinics (which aren’t free, the man you stole from paid for it), food stamps (which aren’t free, the man you stole from paid for it), housing assistance (which isn’t free, the man you stole from paid for it), etc.
Then you say its for the children, so instead of honestly admitting you wanted him to have less, whether you are simply jealous, or think you should get to decide what is done with his money because you know better (to hell with his right to life, liberty, and property) you actually jump up and down and feel good about yourself.

You don’t get to decide. If you say we the people (or you) get to decide, then you don’t respect freedom, period. Don’t hide behind “that’s the law.” Jim Crowe was the law too, some law

Jesse Jackson a man who has never worked in his life and continues to ask for money from the GOVERNMENT instead of work for money,

Jackson says, “But we are giving more and more to fewer and fewer and they are investing less and less. Put the money where the people are who spend it.”

Jackson likened the situation in America now to the sinking of the Titanic. “We keep feeding the wealthy on the deck while the water is coming in at the bottom,” he said.”

      WE keep feeding the wealthy?
NO the wealthy worked for “THEIR MONEY” and they feeding themselves, they also employ people who feed themselves as well.
Jackson, Obama, Valerie Jarretts brains are wired to believe this they have lived it and they believe its the “GOVERNMENTS JOB” to feed people and make them a living by writing a check once a month to them they have all said the same thing

thats not “working” thats reparations folks!

For those of you who asked, yes, I have a job. And if you are more or less average, I make twice what you do.

More and more of the nation’s wealth is being funneled to the rich. Right now, 400 individuals have more wealth than the half of the United States combined. But that’s not enough for you guys. You want to distribute even more of the nations wealth to these 400 guys, and balance the budget from taking away services for the poorest (sort of Robyn hood in reverse). The rich are getting richer, and the middle class and poor are getting poorer.

Sure, we can have a country where those 400 people own 99% of the wealth and everybody else lives in slums. We just have to keep going the direction you guys are suggesting. Once we get there, and achieve this state of plutocracy, where the rich control everything, then you can proclaim, “Free at last!”

      Etc.

Ask Bush why he approved those things. Funny, how grants approved during his term were okay, and are only now being mentioned, as though these occurred under the current administration.

Taxes on the rich are lower than ever, and have lead directly to the huge deficits we’re seeing today, that and an economy that collapsed after seven years of Bush policies. What I find astonishing is this. Bush cut taxes on the rich and there was no job growth or growth in the economy. So he cut them again, and had the same results – no extra jobs. Hello! It doesn’t work!

And so you want to cut them again hoping that the third time it will work? As the saying goes, that’s the definition of insanity, trying the same thing over and over and expecting different results.

Touché, Billy, yeah I keep saying that stuff about Reagan and it doesn’t stick. As I recall he raised taxes 11 times. You know why? To reduce a skyrocketing deficit. All those lizard studies I guess. But I do enjoy talking about the fact free world of the right who tend to forget Reagan tripled the deficit and raised taxes over and over. Reducing taxes for the rich creates jobs? Nope, doesn’t work that way. Taxes are at an all time low, and corporations are making more than ever. Where are the jobs?

The Jobs Bill Obama has proposed reduces taxes for the middle class and poor (you know, the people who buy things and create demand). Funny, nobody is cheering tax cuts when Obama does it, just like nobody complains about how Reagan raised taxes.

@JZS, Two things for you. Once, I used to sound about like you do about Regan and taxes. Then I spent almost two years studying the historical gdp data (from Princeton) and correlating it to taxes etc. I was just starting to study the effects of regulation (because they are essentially a tax) when I ran out of time. Here’s what I found. Raising taxes (total tax, not just nominal federal tax) has little direct effect on the economy, but federal spending (which ultimately must match the tax rate one way or another) seriously hampers economic growth. You should go check it out for yourself. You’re right, Regan is not the saint everyone makes him out to be, but that does not mean we should go further than he did. Federal spending is killing us without a doubt, and here you are asking for more? Seriously, the economic data is out there, go do your own research (I’d share mine, but I don’t want you becoming dependent on me, like I said, Stanford and the federal government for the data =P )
Second, you make about 4 times as much as me. I’m happy at my salary level. That makes you the rich in my book. Should we tax you at 75% so we make the same amount? Sounds like your “fair share” to me. Maybe you should stop trying to steal from those wealthier than you via the government, or put your money where your mouth is and give away that extra 75%.

You know, I work for a rescue mission at the moment, so I see a lot of the poor. I have found there are quite a lot of them who are poor because they are lazy, quite a few who had bad luck, quite a few who are running away from their past, but most of them are poor because they have been told they “deserve” to be taken care of (sounding familiar to anyone… cough… JZS?). Yeah, people being out there telling them they can’t make it, or telling them the rich are at fault and “not paying their fair share” does more to keep people in poverty than anything else I have seen in my time at the mission.
Yes, Jesus did have a lot to say about the poor. Like, they will always be with us, so the idea of “eradicating poverty” is at best a joke, and at worst a ploy to take power. That we each have a responsibility to help the poor, not enslave them economically (go look up how England conquered India and compare that to welfare). That this is and individual mandate (He did not say “and thou wilt hold a gun to the head of thy neighbor that he might serve the poor) and not that Cesar should do it. Jesus said many many things about the poor, and some of the people in this discussion try to live by what He said while others try to pervert what he said. Hmmm…. wonder who is doing more for the poor.

Bet Founder may be right on. Why should he take a hit when you have chronic welfare bums from Johnson era up to present day who have been tax free for decades. Mom to grandmom to great grandmom on up till this very day. When you really look at the facts, there has always been about 3 to 4 percent takers in this society and probably much more than that. Put the bums to work for their govt. checks and get the shovels ready for the shovel ready jobs. Nobody should go to bed hungry but they should be so tired after a good day‘s work that they aren’t on the streets taking what is not theirs. That goes for female and male both. Bet you could get a lot of bridges built with the same dough that is being checked out to the tax free bums.

Hey FatJack, I am not really concerned if Obama is relating to the young people. There are a few hundred protesting Wall Street, but they have no cohesive message and have not even made any demands. So as best I can tell, they are as idealistic and unrealistic as ever. Which means, come election day, they will not even show up. Except for Obama’s first run, they have never come out in numbers to participate in the electoral process. And despite your concerns that they might take a stand for him again this election, I wouldn’t worry. As far as most socialist-leaning and communist-loving extreme leftists are concerned, Obama has sold out and has thrown their cause under the bus. Their only noticeable message I can discern from the Days of Rage is that they have given up on Hope and Change from the President and they are just trying to scare us into capitulation. But unlike the Arab Spring, these kids are not marching against their government, they are marching against their political opponents – those who aspire to a true free market and a return to personal freedom and responsibility. We don’t need an army to defeat that. As soon as their parents cut them off or they actually graduate from college and need a job, you will hear a much different tune. Most liberal college students become conservatives the day they get their first paycheck and see all those taxes taken out.

As it is right now we have 51% that’s 51% who pay NOTHING in taxes!!! You being the wise economist that you are would say “ya see that 51% are the rich bankers” no sir we now have a situation were a smaller % of the nation pays for, feeds, houses and babysits for the 51% who pay NOTHING!!! The “rich” are carrying the country and you want them to pay more?!?!?!?!?!

Crestof, I want everyone to pay something. Too many are paying nothing or are getting way more back than what they put in. Everyone in our country needs to pay taxes, not just the “rich.” With those earning $250,000 considered being millionaires, when do you think you’re income level will be under attack next? Most people who make good salaries have worked their tales off to do so. They work long hours and have made many sacrifices. I hope that people realize that raising taxes on these upper middle income earners will mean that house cleaners, lawn people, and others that people in this income bracket hire will be out of work next.

Jealousy is a terrible thing. If you want what someone else has, get off your butt and work for it.

      @the almighty creestof

      I completely agree.
My 2 sisters not only pay just ssi and medicare withholdings but ZERO income tax, they get money back at the end of the year, more than they paid in total.
It would be terrific if my 2 sisters paid the same percentage I did, even after all my massive “deductions.”

If I owned a company that I risked my money, my time, and my very a$$ to build, then I would most certainly take every last deduction I could, knowing that the money that is stolen from me by gov’t is being used to by votes from people like my sisters, who while sitting on their butts while I built my company, now demand I pay my “fair share.”

Stupid assed opinions formed with only envy, but ZERO thought, are the reason so many employers have said to hell with it and moved overseas.
As far as capital gains, any capital gains you have are taxed at the same rate as the super duper rich. Earned income is what is “progressive,” do some research and you’ll see I am telling you the truth.

      Rich don’t owe you anything.
      Rich don’t owe society anything.
Rich don‘t owe gov’t any higher percentage than anyone else.
Rich didn’t get rich by stealing, people bought their goods or services.
Rich didn’t get rich by exploiting, they don’t have slaves. No one is FORCED to work for them.

Perhaps you know this, and were being sarcastic.
Perhaps you don’t, and you are part of the problem.

Either way, acquiring wealth isn’t immoral, and there is wealth to be created by you and for you. If want to share it with gov’t go ahead, but don‘t sit there and try to use gov’t to demand what others do with their money. Traffic lights, roads, and police are one thing, but taxes don’t need to be that damn high to fund those, and those are all local anyway.

Since when is attempting to have total control over people’s lives, a quest for friendship? Calling one group “Teabaggers,“ telling another to ”quit whining,“ and another to ”pay their fair share” to a different group who has absolutely no right to it, aren‘t exactly intrductions to Mr’s Roger’s neighborhood. Where did he get the idea Obama was trying to make friends, instead of supply power to a small group of otherwise inadequate leaders?

I don’t think that plays into the “Rules For Radicals” playbook Mr Johnson. The plan is to pander and lie to the masses..that (the poor) being your voting base..then you take from the rich, from the middleclass and just feed the poor a line, while you line your own pockets, and fund your own cause. That’s how that works Mr Johnson.

Most “rich” get rich by working hard, studying hard, putting in long hours, and taking significant risk. There are a few who may have it “handed” to them but those are few in number. The “rich” in this country are made up overwhelmingly of small business owners, most of whom WERE “poor or middle class”. This whole argument of gaining wealth because you attended a “top” university is getting old too. You think those universities just hand out grades and knowledge without any effort on the students part? You think employers just overlook the person and the talent of the individual because it says Yale or Harvard on their CV? Some day when you grow up maybe you’ll understand, but only if you quit envying what others have and spend your time striving to gain your own success.

As far as what college kids think about republicans on other “college based” web sites….WHO CARES!. I don’t believe or feel the way I do based on others thoughts or feelings. I believe the way I do based on knowledge, experience, and common sense. Obama, the left, and the socialist policies are not working here in the US and have NEVER worked in ANY country EVER!! What made this young country the greatest and most influential country in the WORLD in this short time period is FREEDOM, CAPITALISM, and the FREE MARKET…PERIOD. The farther we stray from these ideals and the CONSTITUTION that made this country great, the worse our lives will be. Stick that in your hippie pipe and
