Bethlehem Christmas: Mayor Compares Israel to Apartheid South Africa and Prime Minister Calls Jesus ‘Palestinian’

Christmas inspires peace on earth and goodwill toward men (as written in Luke 2:14), so one might wonder why the mayor of Bethlehem used the launch of festivities at the birthplace of Jesus to compare Israel to apartheid-era South Africa and call for a cultural boycott of the Jewish state.

The Jerusalem Post’s West Bank and Gaza correspondent, Khaled Abu Toameh reports Mayor Victor Batarseh, meeting with reporters after delivering his annual Christmas message, said the boycott is a useful tool that worked in South Africa as he also took the opportunity to “lash out” at Jewish settlers. Batarseh said:

Bethlehem Christmas: Mayor Compares Israel to Apartheid South Africa and Prime Minister Calls Jesus Palestinian

Bethlehem Mayor Victor Batarseh

We call for boycotting Israel culturally, educationally, in sports, economics and trade,” the mayor told reporters in Bethlehem. “This is the only way to make Israel come back to the negotiating table and make peace within six months. It worked with South Africa.”

Batarseh said that this was “our message in the political field as Palestinians and residents of Bethlehem.”

The Ma’an Palestinian news agency reports:

“We are peaceful people. We want peace,” he said after announcing the start of Christmas festivities. But it must be a “just and legal peace based on UN resolutions,“ and the ”only way Israel will agree to peace is if it is forced.

“I don’t mean violently, I mean it should be boycotted. Boycott Israel culturally, educationally, in sports and in trade,” Batarseh continued, “and Israel will make peace in six months. Believe me.”

He compared Palestine’s situation to apartheid South Africa, before it abandoned racial discrimination in the face of a global boycott, sanctions and divestment movement and local resistance.

Ma’an explains Mayor Batarseh is staking out a more hardline position than the Fatah-led Palestinian Authority headed by President Mahmoud Abbas and Prime Minister Salam Fayyad who call for boycotting West Bank and Jerusalem “settlements” but not cultural activities taking place within the entire territory of Israel.

Palestinian Prime Minister Fayyad, who pressed the button lighting up the 50-foot decorated tree in Manger Square outside the Church of the Nativity, also inserted a political message into the holiday. According to AP, Fayyad said Christmas is an opportunity to “celebrate the Palestinian identity of Jesus Christ.”

Calling for a boycott of Israel is apparently a trademark of the annual Christmas messaging by the mayor, a member of the Marxist party: the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine (PFLP).

Last year’s message was characterized this way by Israel National News:

Bethlehem Mayor Victor Batarseh lashed out at Israel this week at a tree-lighting ceremony in honor of the Christmas holiday. He accused Israel of cutting Bethlehem off from “its twin city Jerusalem” and called for international sanctions.

“Trade sanctions, sports sanctions, educational sanctions, cultural sanctions. Sanctions are the only way,” he said. Batarseh added that it would be “a waste of time” to negotiate with Israel.

Israel National News’ reporting last year suggested that while he focused on lashing out at Israel, Batarseh chose not to discuss the serious issue of Christians moving out of Bethlehem:

… in Bethlehem the Christian population has fallen to an estimated 15% from 60% over the course of 20 years. Experts have blamed the drop in the Christian population in large part on Muslim harassment, which is encouraged by the PA [Palestinian Authority] and PA laws based in Sharia Islamic law.

According to Wikipedia, “In 1947, Christians made up 85% of the population, but by 1998 this figure had declined to 40%.”

While there was no video of the mayor’s speech readily available, you can watch the lighting of the Christmas trees in Bethlehem and Nazareth courtesy of AP:

Jesus was a “Palestinian” in the truer sense of the word. The Romans labeled the entire area around Israel as Palestina (after the inaccurate Greek Philistia — the Philistines were Mycenaean). All the way through WWII “Palestinian” meant anyone who lived in that area, regardless of their ethnicity. The move to recast Palestinian to mean the Arab population of the area began in the 1920s and really took off after the re-establishment of Israel.
Obviously, the history isn’t what the mayor is thinking of. He’s just one in a long line of proof-texters and outright thieves trying to mis-use Jesus to justify their views of reality. They‘ll have some ’splainin’ to do, I think.

Paul proposes, cutting all foreign aid. Your point tweet is exactly why it doesn’t make sense. We give more to Israels enemies that surround her, and in aiding Israel, we control Israel.

And to say Paul would not cut the leash and let Israel do what they must to protect themselves, you have no clue about principle…. Paul uses the same principle of the constitution in this situation, as probably most situations.

How is it that we can understand the dangers of Obama care, and the effect of having Government take responsibility for your health and lively hood, but we can’t all understand that aiding Israel hurts her more than it helps? It’s nice to have some token yes-man.

“Did you know Iran has the largest JEWISH minority of ALL islamic countries? — 25,000″

That’s down from about 140,000 before expulsion after Israels independence when 70,000 were kicked out with a shirt on their backs. Another 80,000 left after 1979.

“Did you know that 300,000 Christians live in Iran?”

Actually, quite a bit more that that–the secret conversions, despite being brutally suppressed, are going on.

But both Jews an Christians live in Iran as “dhimmis”–second class citizens, since the Islamic revolution in 1979.

This individual, Victor Batarseh, is eerily similar to Obama in his ideology. He purports to be a Christian (Roman Catholic) but he belongs to a commie popular front. (PFLP). He allied himself with Hamas and Islamic Jihad to win the election for mayor. He has dual U.S.-Palestinian citizenship. He claims Palestinians are a people of peace, but disregards the fact that they have seriously decimated the Christian population in Bethlehem. He wants to force Israel to submit to Palestinian demands. Looks like Batarseh and Hussein see eye to eye on just about everything.

On October 1, 1948, the mufti of Jerusalem, Haj Amin Husseini, stood before the Palestine National Council in Gaza and declared the existence of an All-Palestine Government.
In theory, this state already ruled Gaza and would soon control all of Palestine. Accordingly, it was born with a full complement of ministers to lofty proclamations of Palestine’s free, democratic, and sovereign nature. But the whole thing was a sham. Gaza was run by the Egyptian government, the ministers had nothing to oversee, and the All-Palestine Government never expanded anywhere. Instead, this façade quickly withered away.
Almost exactly forty years later, on November 15, 1988, a Palestinian state was again proclaimed, again at a meeting of the Palestine National Council.
This time, Yasser Arafat called it into being. In some ways, this state was even more futile than the first, being proclaimed in Algiers, almost 3,000 kilometers and four borders away from Palestine, and controlling not a centimeter of the territory it claimed. Although the Algiers declaration received enormous attention at the time (the Washington Post’s front-page story read “PLO Proclaims Palestinian State”), a dozen years later it is nearly as forgotten as the Gazan declaration that preceded it.

You are the closest thing to sane I’ve seen so far here, in that you are AT LEAST willing to concede that what Israel has done is NO DIFFERENT than what literally every other nation on Earth has done, Israel just HAPPENED to get caught doing it, in the mid 20th Century when, after thousands of years of naked imperialism, it suddenly wasn‘t okay to just assert one’s political supremacy through violence.

That being said, the correct and humane solution is NOT to continue the racist Zionist quest for a state of Jewish ethnic purity–the human race needs to move beyond such pointless and arbitrary divisions which they have put (or more accurately been led, in part, to place at the behest of the powerful to protect themselves) so much false faith in. It is true, some Palestinian radicals will still prefer violence as a course, and they shall be put down as violators of the civil peace–but in order to act with the legitimate authority to do so, Israel must EARN this right by acting justly and indifferently towards the various citizens of the territory who DO want to live in peace (Jew and Arab alike). We can deal with pluralism, we are capable–the constitution of Israel can be made to protect democracy and civil rights of both ethnic and religious minorities so they can have autonomy from one another as is necessary for peaceful coexistence, and these rights can require so great a majority to amend as to require both Jewish and Arab consent to amend.

Great Post. I would add one thing the civil rights voting legislation in 1957 proposed in Eisenhower’s (R) administration was gutted and watered down by Senate Majority Leader Lyndon Baynes Johnson (D) pandering to anti-civil rights south anti-civil rights Democrats reducing it so much as to effectively kill its intent. Interesting. But most blacks today think he was such a champion of civil rights. He was a political oportunist of the first magnitude as so many politicians are in Washington today. Oh for real patriots that did not enrich themselves, but actually looked on their service as a sacrifice, a sacred honor and duty for love of the country and its Constitution.

You make a number of good points but there are some things I’d like to point out. First, Zionism isn’t about creating an ethically pure state. The Zionist movement was created in response to antisemitism, the goal being that if Jews had their own country they would be masters of their own fate and not subject to the tolerance of others. It has been less than a century since the last major instances of antisemitism and, believe it or not, the most recent acts occurred after the Holocaust.

Second, there’s one minor thing you should be aware of. One of my major criticisms of Israel’s political system is the fact that they lack a true constitution. They have a series of basic laws, which require a 2/3 majority to pass, but no specific guidelines for what the powers of government are.

“Zionism isn’t about creating an ethically pure state.”
Well, that’s not the EXPLICIT end (except when Zionists have said that IS the explicit end, which they have), but it is one necessitated by their core beliefs, so whether its a means, or an end, makes little difference (other than semantics) since the ideology requires it either way.
“The Zionist movement was created in response to antisemitism”
Yes, that is historically the CAUSE of Zionism.
“the goal being that if Jews had THEIR OWN country”
What part of “their own country” do you not understand?
“they would be masters of their own fate and not subject to the tolerance of others. It has been less than a century since the last major instances of antisemitism and, believe it or not, the most recent acts occurred after the Holocaust.”
Yes, in fact, contrary to what most American Zionists believe, the Jews were immigrating to the region before the twentieth century as early as the late 1880′s, which is about the period the World Zionist Organization was established (and the National Jewish Fund). In fact, the Holocaust slowed Jewish immigration, because travel through Eurasia became dangerous and unpredictable due to the war.

But just because you, as a group, have experienced racism, doesn’t mean you get to artificially great a state with your ethnicity as a majority (even if absolute purity isn’t your goal, doesn’t make a functional difference). That’s by definition racist.

@ the third Moron, I mearn Archon, No wait maybe I was right the first time.
If Israel was designed to be an exclusive jewish state as you claim then they would have denied access to all historical sites of other religons as the Arabs did when Jordan controlled the west bank.
Additionally In the Israeli Knesset there are arab members, if it was to be exclusively Jewish then arabs wouldn’t be allowed to participate.
In the Israeli Supreme court there is an arab judge, if it was to be an exclusivley jewish state then what is an arab judge doing on the court.
In the Israeli army there are arab officers and at least one general. If it was to be an exclsively jewish state then arabs certainly wouldn’t be in leadership roles in the aramy.
In Israel the arab citizens vote.
If it were an apartheid jewish state none of the above facts would be, yet they are all true and indisputable. The country is a majority jewish country as the USA is a majority christian country. But both countries allow other religons to practice freely as long as they don’t endanger other citizens.
Your hatred of jews in general blinds you from seeing the facts. Israel is not racist, not apartheid, and if they were interested in genocide how is it that the palisitinan population has gone from 500,000 to 6,000,000 the idea of genocide is to reduce population not increase it 12X.
Sadly you are just another in the long line of jew haters who look for any reason to hate the jews.

      @MGINDI26
“If Israel was designed to be an exclusive jewish state as you claim then they would have denied access to all historical sites of other religons”
Well they have done that from time to time, but that also logically doesn’t follow–they don’t NEED to prevent other people from visiting religious sites to be majority Jewish; all they need is for the majority of people who vote and/or run in Israeli elections to be Jewish (ethnically speaking, although the religious Right of Israel ALSO receives disproportionate power, but that’s another subject).
“Additionally In the Israeli Knesset there are arab members…to participate.”
Yeah, like twelve of them–and they can’t form their own parties, and their parties they CAN join are subject to Israeli approval. Don’t pretend they have equal rights or power. Jews don’t need to be ALL of the population to have ALL the political power–just enough of it.
“In the Israeli Supreme court there is an arab judge…court.”
Ditto–how many Jewish justices are there? Guess what–it was, and still would be were it not for the wars (of Israeli independence) and Diaspora, an Arabic majority area.
“In the Israeli army…in the aramy.?”
Since you are just using the same fallacious argument over and over, I’m only going to refute it one more time–it doesn‘t matter how many token Arabs the Israeli’s “give rights to,” as this is completely independent the question of who holds the political power.

“In Israel the arab citizens vote.”
Yes–the few thousand Arabs LEFT that didn’t flee/weren’t driven out during the Israeli War of Independence (and subsequent wars of, de facto if not intentional, expansion) CAN vote, but only for candidates and parties which receive the overwhelmingly Jewish political orthodoxy’s approval. That’s democracy all right–you can have a party and vote and stuff, but only for the candidates we allow.
“If it were an apartheid jewish state none of the above facts would be, yet they are all true and indisputable.”
Nope–South Africa found it useful to keep around blacks in positions of (still subjugated to the Dutch) authority and ‘power’; they discovered dividing the subjugated community by introducing class contradictions was one of, if not the, most effective means of imperial control, second only, perhaps, to religion.
“The country is a majority jewish country as the USA is a majority christian country.”
Is that supposed to be a normative statement?

      “…hatred of jews…”
I don’t hate the Jews, I find the ideology of Zionism repugnant for its racism and nationalism. But that would be the case if they were Germans, Chinese, or Native Americans–it doesn‘t matter that the’re Jews.
      “Israel is not racist”
No, but a “Jewish Israel” (where one wouldn’t exist) is.
      “not apartheid”
      Different strategies–same goal.
      “…the palisitinan population…”

It’s true that the area is called “occupied” territory, but what I find strange is that 1. It wasn’t considered occupied under Jordan and Egypt who held the territory for 19 years and 2. In most other instances of such a dispute, the territory is referred to as “disputed”. For an area to be occupied it must first be universally recognized as part of a state with established borders. Palestinians have neither a state, nor were the “borders” officially established between Israel and its neighbors. The current “borders” are nothing more than an armistice line created in 1948 which were never agreed upon to be official borders.

It is all part of the plan of the Almighty to make Israel a nation again after nearly 2000 years. the time of the Gentiles is almost over. The Almighty will keep his promise to the seed of Abraham. He will have a remnant in Israel at his return to the Mt of Olives in Jerusalem (See Zech 14). To take sides with the palestinians is to be against the will of the Almighty. Good luck with that! I read the back of the book! They loose!!

The difference of force and persuasion is infinite, religions use persuasion, showing people the truth of what they teach, when they cross the line and begin to use to use brute force in order to bring people to their cause, then they have ceased to be a religion. They’re just another two bit tyrant mocking God by using his name to justify their atrocities.

“The difference of force and persuasion is infinite”
      It’s actually less than that.
      “religions use persuasion”
When it suits them–ever heard of the Spanish Inquisition? How about the Crusades (there were at least ten of them)? Lord’s Resistance Army? Any of this, a-ringin’ a bell?
“showing people the truth of what they teach”
How can they all be true? I thought only one can be true…but in order to BE true, you have to be able to convince the unconvinced A PRIORI their acceptance of the claim (i.e. the religion) you’d like them to believe.
“when they cross the line and begin to use to use brute force in order to bring people to their cause, then they have ceased to be a religion.”
Then there are no religions, because they’ve all done this at one point in history. Or they all equally imperfect examples of human organizations and philosophy–the point is that no religion is obviously the special the way each claims.
“They’re just another two bit tyrant mocking God by using his name to justify their atrocities.
The Islam-O-Facists are just the latest example of this profanity.”
The presupposition of god is unwarranted and unnecessary and leads people to, at best, do good for irrational reasons, and at worst, do horrible horrible things in the name of good.

You are right, Christians are told to go forth and spread the Gospel, (The good news) but modern day Christians will not kill you or use violence to force you to accept Jesus.

If a moslem asks to tell you about Islam and you say no thanks, I am a Christian or worse yet a Jew, their holy book tells them to kill the infidel.

If a Christian asks to tell a someone about Christianity and they say no thanks, I am a moslem, the Christian Holy Book tells us to shake the dust from our sandals and leave them alone.

      Big difference.

      @ the third Moron,
Your question “And that’s different from other ideologies how?”
Well Judaism does not push itself on any other person. Jews don’t have missionaries, do not perform forced conversions, do not seek out converts. As a matter of fact if one expresses an interest inconverting jews try to talk them out of it. Jews say you practice yours as long as it doesn‘t hurt anyone else and that’s fine. We don’t say the only way to G-ds love is to be a Jew.
So while islam seeks to convert by any means neccesary. It is different from Judaism.

Yes, because the Jews have NEVER committed violence (except for the Biblical and modern founding/re-founding of their state) because of their teleological beliefs that they are a “chosen people” of God with a “unique and special destiny.” These notions lead to mass murder, and Jews, I’m sorry to tell you, are not immune to the temptations of ethnocentrism. (or perhaps “ideolo-centric” would be more accurate; obsessed and blinded by the certainty of “truth” of one’s own ideology, that one fails to consider alternative possibilities)

Liberation Theology teaches that Jesus was a Palestinian. Remember, this is the church that Obama went to for years with Rev. Wright. It is the same as Palestinian Liberation Theology, and a belief many Muslims, or those that support Islamic extremists, stand with. Another reason it seems obvious we have wolves in sheep’s clothing in every area of life. Businesses, military, community orgs, wall street, OCCUPY, schools, unions, Planned Parenthood, Hollywood, Congress, Lobbyists, churches and this administration…head to tail. The masks have fallen, and God is exposing all the immoral, all the fraud, all the adulterers, child molesters, thieves and false leaders/prophets.
Anybody can say their a Christian. Anybody can carry a Bible. Anybody can say anything. Anyone who claims to be a Christian, and stands with those that support immorality, abortion, homosexuality, Islamic extremists, theft by excuses, theft by coveting what others have, supporting adultery, taking God out of our schools, out of our businesses, out of our courts, not abiding by our Constitution and laws, supporting illegals and not supporting legal citizens and I could go on and on, need to read the Bible and realize none of that lines up with moral or ethical delivery of Gods Word, so calling themselves Christian is a mockery. 75% of Americans claim that…and look at where we are at.
