‘Betrayed’: Floridians Protest After Firefighters Ordered to Remove American Flags From Their Trucks

Residents of Seminole, Florida are outraged after their local firefighters were reportedly told to remove the American flags from their trucks.

“There was an [order] from a chief to remove all flags from the apparatus”, one of the protesters explained.

But the order had nothing to do with safety, nor with the quality of the flags being flown.  They were not tattered or worn, according to reports.

The local Fox affiliate, WTVT-TV, got in touch with a spokesperson for Seminole Fire Rescue, who said that the city is trying to be “sensitive” about the proper display of the American flag.

But firefighters said off-camera that it really all began after the city received two complaints about large American flags being flown from the backs of fire trucks.

Seminole Fire Rescue spokesperson Alison Shanabrook admits as much, telling WTVT the city received a complaint about the flag being “inappropriately displayed.”

In a statement released to the media she says: “[The] City is trying to be sensitive to the proper display of the American flag,” and she pointed out the flag is part of the standard firefighter uniform.

After they appeased the complainers, the firefighters said, they were then asked to remove the smaller flags. And now they are seemingly not allowed to fly any American flags.

Protesters patriotically waved their flags outside the fire station after their own complaints to the city were ignored.

“Betrayed by the people that we’re putting trust in, that we’re voting for,” one woman said, summarizing her feelings.

The protesters say that, among other things, they are trying to respect the memory of the firefighters who died on 9/11.

“I am not even an American Citizen and I am deeply offended by this action. I lived in NYC when the Towers came down. The people that complained should be ashamed of themselves,” one commenter wrote.

Another declared: “The officials in this community are responsible for the worst case of cowardice and despicable behavior I have ever witnessed.  Two…TWO complaints and they immediately cave in to [anti-American] sentiment.”

When asked what he hopes to accomplish, one of the flag-waving protesters explained: “My goal today is that they say, ‘yes the flags are going back on the trucks, yes we have a solution.’”

    There is fairly extensive list of “dos and don’ts” regarding our flag. However, this appears to be another strike of the zero tolerance hammer.

      How come when only one person complains they are taken down, but when many complain they are ignored? People, American haters are in power and they are doing what they want. Do NOT comply. Firefighters, put the flags ON and don’t back down.

      This country is either worth defending or it’s not. I’d be more than happy to be fired for wearing a flag or refusing to follow that stupid order. You have to know when to stand up and fight. How many policemen do they have? How many councilmen do they have? Not enough if everyone openly defies them. If they are willing to intimidate people to not be patriotic then they will be willing to remove other things as well. Stand up patriots of Seminole. Defy them! Roll over and show them your belly will only bring more of the same. Stand up and they will fold. They have nothing but an illusion of authority to hide behind. Rip the veil away from them and like the Wizard of Oz their power will be diminished.

      This is a story about a symptom of communism which has infiltrated our nation for over 40years. The fact is that Obama is only a representation of an increasingly number of socialist.       TheBlaze should have more real stories, of real solutions.       I liked GB was in DC for 8-28 and thought he was a slave to truth, as his saying “The Truth Starts Here”. He had David Barton on he show and promoted real history. I know someone that met David Barton 20+ years ago and he was working hard at that time to get truth out about our history.

      So I expected GB to do the same, with everything. I guess I am naive, as I see him stay clear of so many stories, and a unexplained anti Ron Paul outlook.

      Yes, over the years many laws and regulations have been passed regarding Old Glory.

      Any law or regulation banning or restricting the honorable display of the flag should be treated as an UNCONSTUTIONAL and ILLEGAL law, no matter what any Democrat-appointed judge says.

      Display and fly the flag, or replace it with the Tea Party flag. Either way:

      DON’T TREAD ON ME! I am a veteran and a patriot, and I will be happy to defend the Constitution and act on my oath to protect and defend it against all enemies both foreign AND DOMESTIC, my retirement be damned! A paycheck and my property are NOT worth my honor or my soul.

      OKAY. THE Captain for the Firemen sent an answer and in the interest of TRUTH let’s post it.:
      RECEIVED THIS AFTERNOON after an EMAIL being sent to them:

      In response to your email, our city’s desire has remained to see American flags flown from our fire apparatus as long as it meets the US Code. The issue was that a single flag was removed from one of our fire apparatus because the flag was displayed in a manner not in accordance with the US Code, Title 36, Chapter 10, Section 175, paragraph b. Employees were previously advised in writing on the language in the US Code regarding the proper way to display a flag on a vehicle. This was done as a result of employees previously displaying a US flag improperly on one of our vehicles. An employee committee has been working on a plan to fly flags on all our apparatus that would comply with the US Code for the past three months.

      This most recent instance an employee placed a flag on one of the fire apparatus without city approval and again not in accordance with the US Code. While I do not believe the act of one of our employees to display a flag was meant to be disrespectful, that is exactly what happened and the flag was rightfully ordered removed. This issue was never about sensitivity by a single complainant, it was about respecting our flag and our responsibility to make sure all flags are always respectfully displayed. I encourage all Americans to read and understand the US Code, specifically Title 36.

      I am proud to report that our department will not wait for the employee committee to make a recommendation on how to properly display the American flag on our vehicles. Our maintenance division is fabricating stainless steel flag poles that will be mounted to the right front bumper (Fire engines don’t have fenders) of all our fire apparatus and flown with a flag made in the United States by the end of the week.

      UNITED STATES CODE, TITLE 36, CHAPTER 10
      §175. Position and manner of display
      The flag, when carried in a procession with another flag or flags, should be either on the marching right; that is, the flag’s own right, or, if there is a line of other flags, in front of the center of that line.
      · (a) The flag should not be displayed on a float in a parade except from a staff, or as provided in subsection (i) of this section.
      · (b) The flag should not be draped over the hood, top, sides, or back of a vehicle or of a railroad train or a boat. When the flag is displayed on a motorcar, the staff shall be fixed firmly to the chassis or clamped to the right fender.

      Here is one to mull over. If the commie bastards can burn our flag and be protected by law why is it offensive to anyone for firemen to fly it in whatever way that safely mounts on their trucks? By the same laws allowing commies to burn it firemen should be allowed to fly it. I suggest firemen strike and refuse to go back to work until they are allowed to put the flag on display again.

      As a former resident of seminole now living in hendersonville nc and the wife of a retired st. Petersburg firefighter, i am insulted by and take great umbrage at the actions of the fire chief in seminole he is a disgrace to his community and to his country. Not to mention the many veterans that died to protect his right to fly the american flag.

      So what’s next? Removing the flag patch from their uniforms or pulling the flag down from the flagpole in front of the city government building? Hell all over the country they are hoisting Mexican flags and rainbow flags in place of the Stars and Stripes showing disrespect.

      Hopefully it’s an election year there and the people can vote the “sensitive” city leaders out and vote in some local representatives who are sensitive to know what it means to be an American and proudly display respect for our flag and country. People around the world risk their lives to immigrate to America yet there are those here who seem to be ashamed of America.

    Fire Protection in this country goes all the way back to our founding and Ben Franklin. The Fire Service is deeply rooted in tradition and this tradition includes honoring this Great Republic. Who in the hell are these spineless jackasses to order the removal of one of this Great Nations sacred embloms from their vehicles and now from their uniforms? One more example of the disintegration of the Republic. Every resident of Seminole should come out in mass and show where the real power is.

    What’s the big deal? After the people elected a pro-mooslum president and a socialist government, and the supreme court took away our property rights under the Kelo Decision and our freedom under the Obamacare Decision, we no longer have “the Republic for which it stands”.

    We now have a Socialist Democratic Democracy (read: mob rule) backed up by a judicial dictatorship. That is why the government is trying like hell to take our guns away (re: Fast and Furious).

    The government will be flying a red or green flag soon. As for me, I fly the Tea Party flag. The government started this…..we can finish it. Maybe then the Stars and Stripes will have some real meaning again.

    The country I live in today and the country I used to live in are two different places. I served in the US Navy for 4 years, swore an oath to the Constitution, and flew and saluted the flag and took the Pledge of Allegiance with pride. No more. The government broke it’s promise and abrogated its obligations to the people and sold us out. We have a government full of traitors. I now know how the Confederates felt, how the Patriots felt about their King and the British flag.

    We are trying to hold on to a dream that will not come true unless we are prepared to take back what was taken from us and remove the traitors that have power over us now. It’s time to stop whining and start fighting; stand up or shut up.

    We have one chance left. Remember in November.

    Were the flags allowed to touch the ground? Were they flown upside down (which considering the way things are going might be appropriate)? Or was someone just offended at seeing American flags displayed on government vehicles? First it‘s no religious displays if they’re Christian or Jewish, then it‘s you can’t fly an American flag because it might offend immigrants or some unknown anti-American entity. What a total crock!!!

Why is it that they always seem to listen to the one or two complainers while ignoring the mass of other citizens and veterans who proudly display this symbol of our nation’s freedoms?       I do believe the issue is people who are offended, they rarely have any emotional control and then impose their will of comfortable emotion on the rest of us. we are not responsible for everyones feelings in this country. the only feeling I would like to be responsible for is showing them the door to canada if they feel so offended about the flag.

      Here’s an idea. Those who are offended by Americans flying the American flag in America should LEAVE! We don’t want you here.

      What other nation on Earth would allow a couple of a-holes to stop the display of that nations flag on its own soil? When bureau-weenies start talking about “sensitivity” cover your wallet and your backside, one or both are about to be violated.

      Do we wait until illegals complain about the American flag flying outside the welfare office before we fight back?

      BESIDES…whenever I see our firetruck(s) out and about with the great American Flag flying..I am reminded of the HEROES OF 9/11.

      What’s wrong with you cave-in Seminole, FL firemen? Get a clue!! I want to know who the TWO
      complaints came from. Really, what person living in a country would call the Fire Dept. and say ‘Your national flag offends me”….I would check out their house for pipe bombs and other TERRORISTS stuff.
