Biden Complains in Email: ‘Wealthy, Right-Wing Ideologues‘ Trying to Buy Election With ’Nasty, Deceptive TV Ads’

Vice President Joe Biden sent a pointed fundraising email to supporters late Sunday night. The letter went out as a windfall response to the selection of Paul Ryan as Mitt Romney’s vice-presidential running mate on Saturday. The highly partisan email pleaded with supporters for money and used fear to craft a dire electoral situation for the administration come November.
Biden begins by declaring that after the Ryan pick, more ”wealthy, right-wing ideologues” will line up to support the Romney-Ryan ticket. The vice president threatens that these wealthy people are “trying to buy this election” and are running “nasty, deceptive TV ads on the air right this very minute.” The last attack is ironic, given the latest series of pro-Obama PAC ads have blamed Mitt Romney for seemingly killing a man’s wife who had cancer.
The sitting VP goes on to threaten that “we risk letting the other side run away with” the presidency if the supporter does not contribute. Biden then says the presidential race could turn into “a pretty lopsided fight” because the Obama team is up against “outside spending never seen before in modern politics.”
The threats seem rather alarming, until one simply looks at who has spent/raised what in this election. According to Opensecrets.org, the race is a lopsided runaway on spending, in favor of the Obama Campaign. In fact, it really is not even close. The Obama Camp has out-raised and out-spent the Romney camp nearly 2 to 1.

So what does this data tell us?
For starters, given that all of these two-term presidents experienced better job growth without the assistance of the massive tax cuts for the wealthy provided by President George W. Bush, it certainly seems fair to note that a certain amount of job growth would have come during the years George W. was president—whether he had given us the tax cuts or not.
And if one feels the need to argue that tax cuts are the great driver of employment, the comparative numbers presented make it shockingly clear that these tax benefits to the wealthy do little to nothing to even keep up with the employment increases under all of the other two term presidents of the modern era, with the exception of poor old Ike.
Nobody likes to pay taxes. We can—and will—have more endless debates over whether we should resolve our debt crisis by cutting, raising taxes or some reasonable or unreasonable combination of the two.
But the GOP meme suggesting that tax cuts equals jobs while, conversely, tax increases on the so-called “job creators” mean less work for the rest of us, simply does not survive any reasonable scrutiny.

Did you see the campaign this weekend? I thought it was hilarious. I think it took some really good shots at both sides. My only issue was that it focused on the Citizens United ruling at one point but it fails to recognize the union machine counterpart. Most don’t connect those dots, so I shouldn’t be surprised when Hollywood misses it. Regardless though, the point of the movie where they are one-upping each other on TV commercials is just too good.
