Big Mother: FLOTUS Tells Doctors to Write Prescriptions for Your Fat Kids

Fat Lady of the US, what is your BMI (Butt Mass Indicator)?
I believe this is a misguided “Just Say No” (to donuts) program to give the FLOTUS something to do.
I believe it will backfire when burly Americans head to the polls.
Lots of people fudge (mmm!!) when reporting their weight.
I can imagine what will happen when someone hacks the gov computer and publishes people’s BMI.
Your BMI is nobody’s business but your own. In America we have rights. Including the right to be fat!

Write a prescription. For what? What has been proven to work better at weight loss than diet and exercise? Plus, advising people to expect a prescription only reinforces the idea that someone else can fix your problems. It is misinformation. Stop buying crap food and get off your rear end. Look for healthy people to model your dietary life after if you need help. In the end, it is up to the individual to make the right choices and act.

The old Federal dietary guidelines did not help matters either. For decades we have been trained to eat foods that encouraged obesity. Is anyone surprised that the Feds are now trying to fix a problem that they assisted in creating?

Exactly. Not only that, but did you see the new president‘s list of top 10 things keeping American’s fat? It’s jam packed with things like – plastic. Preservatives. Things we pretty much can’t get away from – because of what our government has allowed to happen in our marketplace. Did you know that Red40 is illegal everywhere but in America? It’s in nearly everything here.

THIS IS VERY SAD.. she’s a MOTHER who said her own youngest daughter was TOO FAT? That’s pretty sick in my book and one reason why so many young girls have eating disorders. IT’S NOT JUST THEIR DIET!!! KIDS TODAY DO NOT GET ENOUGH PHYSICAL ACTIVITY! What happened to physical fitness programs DURING AND AFTER school EVERY DAY? Teaching progressive crap is so much more important? It’s not safe for kids to just go PLAY outdoors, so they sit at a computer or play video games instead. We’ve had the same diets for young people since the beginning of the working mom era. I don’t ever remember a bunch of FAT kids in school? This generation needs to get up and MOVE! The focus should be moved from FOOD to EXERCISE.

I agree with a number of the thoughts expressed here, and I have the goal of not taking my children to a doctor unless something is broken, won’t stop bleeding, or doesn’t get better with a reasonable amount of rest (up to 10 days for a virus;right?)
I tend to think this article was put together more to invoke an emotional response than to inform, and I find that disappointing. There is no explanation of what she means by “not just measuring BMI, but writing prescriptions” Prescriptions for what? I didn’t know you could just take something in place of all that healthy eating and exercise. Who wouldn’t be tempted by that? Well, I guess not me.

This really burns me up, this is the same crap I am going through right now with my son and school over his ADD. I’m completely opposed to sticking him on a bunch of stimulant drugs to get him to better pay attention in class, but that is the only suggestion any teacher, doctor or specialist will ever come up with!! I’m changing his diet and giving him homeopathic herbs and vitamins to try and help his concentration, rather than giving in and heading for the pharmacy w/a prescription for Ritalin in hand! We are DRUGGING our kids to death and FOR WHAT PURPOSE? To please a bunch of strangers: doctors, teachers and politicans…I don’t think so.

Don’t do it! In the stone age I went to school with kids that were considered rowdy or could not concentrate. They grew out of it as they matured a little and went on to be good students. The teachers don’t want to take the time to help these kids, they want a room full of zombies paying attention and easy to indoctrinate. Any one out of the “normal” is a problem to them.

How many generations went to school before the pills came out and became good citizens? What worries me, kid are different and some have more energy than others. If they can’t let that energy out because they are drugged, what happens when all that pent up energy is released once they are off the pills? Nature needs to run it’s course. Just work with your son to make sure he is at a learning level so he doesn’t fall behind. There is no way I would ever allow a child to be drugged to appease the lazy teacher that can’t put her/him self out to help.

Not sure if this will help in your situation. When I was in the second grade, many years ago, it turned out that I had problems with day dreaming, not concentrating, etc. It is now called ADD. At the time, though, the first reaction was not drugs. I had to bring and use a timer for everything. It only lasted for a year and helped throughout the rest of my school time. If you can get the teacher to work with you this may be an option you can explore.

ADD and ADHD are real, but there are lots of support groups that can guide you in making non-medication changes in your child’s life that will help him. Some grow out of it, some don’t. It’s more a case of being aware of how your brain is wired (not bad, just different) and working with it.

You are on the right track. Pay attention to what foods your child craves as he and his body are attempting to self regulate/sedate or self stumulating. I have ADD and my teenage daughter too. I found out in my 30′s and learned to coach myself. I saw it in my daughter right away and she has been coached also. No meds. Ever. Now you are going to think I’m crazy since you are being told your child has a disability. It is not. It is a gift. We see the world in technacolor! I can have 8 tracks running at the same time and actually see the algorithm in my mind. My daughter is the same and is an honor student, equestrian, vocalist etc. She uses her horsemanship and music to rest her mind. Your child has a gift that will manage him if he is not coached on how to manage the gift. Once he gets that down, there are no limits for him. We use a key word: overwhelmed to signal when the tracks get chaotic and start to take over. I‘ve coached her that it’s a room full of rabbits, hundreds of them all out of the cage…what to do? What rabbit at a time. Pick up one rabbit and put it in the cage and so on….Good luck to you!

Your right, keep the pills away from our children. I’m guessing your child is between 7 & 11, they tried to tell me my kids needed medication to focus, I told them he was a normal child with too much energy and as a teacher they need to deal with it and not rush to put our kids in a coma just so you can have a nice easy day. Don’t get me wrong there needs to be parent intervention when things go to far but not with drugs. My son has now finished hight school with a 4.5 GPA and never had one script

It really should be FLATUS, First Lady Antagonizing The USA, because quite frankly her true nature has come out and she is about as popular as a beer fart in a crowded elevator.
BMI is only of minimal value in evaluating kids’ body stature. Athletic kids with less than 5% body fat are often deemed as being “obese”. Kids with airway obstruction from tonsils and secondary sleep disturbance cannot lose weight until the sleep pattern is corrected and the body’s growth hormone and the fat based metabolic regulator leptin return to normal levels. Are we supposed to write a Rx for T&A? It appears that the most dangerous fat in America resides between the ears of the Washington liberal ruling class.
The good news is that these slugs are creating an environment for a parallel healthcare system where government is banished but has no access to the privacy of the patients, where EMR is forbidden and insurance companies are the patients’ problem.
Imagine the government having access to all the Electronic Records of each individual. Right now you can check a car out on CarFAX or you can purchase an individual’s demographics from the state license bureau. Meet some guy in the bar and the state will sell you his psychiatric and urologic history….PenisFAX if you like.

Oh Brother! Instead of pilling up the kids why not give the parents a swift kick and maybe a smart pill? The parents are usually as obese as the kids! It’s not healthy and is creating many health problems, but the government needs to butt out and stop trying to control. If they are worried about the cost on their great new health plan…eliminate the plan!

Where did she say “prescription diet pills” – a primary care physician can be writing a prescription of all types of things – referring you to a dietican, or a therapist. This video has too many breaks and is taken out of context so we really can’t get a clear idea from the video just exactly what she is talking about. We need to stop jumping to conclusions and be honorable when talking about the First Lady – at least that’s what I believe. People will come on this website and see some of the comments made here and then the right get another bad rap. We have to show our best side to the outside world so that we stop being the joke of the other side.

What makes Michelle the expert on BMI. Anyone with common sense must know that teaching your children healthy eating habits and excercise leads to ideal body weight. The parents must have control not the government. If the government wants to control something, maybe no junk food for food stamp recepients. Michelle appears to be overweight herself.

Is there an end to this? Where do you see the end to this? I am in Physical Therapy and my 13 yr old daughter came home from school with a letter saying her BMI was too high…she was 5ft 1in and weighed under 100lbs. Her BMI is high because she is very strong from years of equestrian sports, jumping and cross country and the conditioning that goes with this sport. She was able to laugh about it because she has a good grounding in eating for herself and her bodies needs and lives with a health care provider that is able to explain what all this really means. But, she had friends that don’t have this guidance and some were really upset…dieting became a big issue. This is a pathetic further attempt to reduce the individual to what is good for the collective. Children and adults need to learn to respect their own body and learn to listen to its voice. They need to know there is no bad food or good food its just fuel and each of us needs and burns fuel differently. Trying to reduce you to a calculated BMI number is just more junk thinking being touted by control freaks that cannot get enough of running your life, my life, and anyone else that will let them. This is the ultimate nanny state. If you live long enough you’ll have seen coffee come and go, eggs good, bad, now good…oops bad again, whatever! I’m convinced that broccoli can kill you in the wrong hands!

Michele Obama will be responsible for increasing the level of eating disorders in children with this really stupid emphasis on BMI, which does not look at strength, muscle mass or endurance – only weight and height.

It is ridiculous. It‘s not the government’s business. Every child is different, grows at different rates and many children with a high BMI are either entering a growth spurt or are very strong, fit kids whose muscles weigh more than fat.

Ya’ll are right about the eating disorders and I think the effects of that are just as bad. Also on the other hand my 22 month old daughter is on the small side 21lbs. So what are they going to call child serivces on me because she is the weight of a 1 year old??

Second the Military had standards like this and my Exhusband was so close to getting kicked out because of things like the BMI he was 6′2″ at 245lbs. His max for the Air Force was 224lbs. Which after he did everything to lose weight and it didn’t help, running all the time. He was up there running with the 20year olds that are alot skinnier than he on the 1.5mile run they time you for. He was over by weight for their standards.

No—-Idiots at work!!!! As a retired health worker you don’t treat child obesity with drugs. What is used are amphetamines. Remember this saying from they sixties and seventies “Speed kills”

      Prescriptions for WHAT?
The city I live in has 1 obese person in the high school, 1 obese person in the Jr. High, and in all 4 elementary schools – 0 obese children.

Where are all of these obese kids? If they (they do) fall into a racial or urban category – say THAT.
This is not a widespread US problem.

I don’t think, though, in a FREE nation (republic) ANYONE should be ‘dictating’ medical treatments! And to SOON be ordering American citizens on every phase of their exams & rationed treatment! The people in our WH (DC in general) are reminding us more & more of the late 20′s Germany.

Dressseler..I totally agree! Your argument is truth and that is why I have an issue with Universal Health Care. Why should I pay for the people who want to abuse their bodies by eating junk, or smoking, or taking drugs, etc? This is America and you have freedoms…just don’t expect other people to fund your bad habits. Mrs. O – of all the pet projects a first lady could lead this is what you came up with…how about the lack of skill in reading, writing, basic math? Or, unwed mothers? I could go on forever….I will take care of my own family, thank you!

Here is a concept, Kids are molded in there early years. when i was in school i remember them teaching us about nutrition. stop indoctrinating our children and lets teach them about how to live a moral, principal, integrity and, honest filled humbled life. the Government wants a society medicated and have us all walking around like a bunch of social zombies to control us. stay out of our homes, do the right thing. everyone has a mirror at home, lets all as responsible parents start looking in the mirror. Lets be examples stop letting the boogie man run our lives (The Government).

Anyone who has a weight problem and has tried to lose weight knows that popping pills is NOT the answer!
And to give pills to children is absolutely criminal.

wow!! If pills could make you thin.. there would be no fat people!!

It is absurd to treat kid’s BAD EATING HABITS, with drugs, but lets face it, we live in a drug culture! How many hundreds of TV ads are posted every day, that recommend some pill to fix “EVERYTHING” that could possibly happen to the human body?. What ever happened to “PARENTS”??

Mrs. Obama, I respectfully request you keep your well intentioned hands (cough, cough) away from my children. Please allow me to be a good steward over my own responsibility for my children’s healthcare needs. Me and my family don’t need the healthcare protection of big government telling my family doctor what to do.

OH MAN! Thanks for the laugh.

And micky4 -you’re so right. Kids don’t need more pills! That‘s our govt’s solution to everything! Don’t solve it – medicate it! Besides – are there even weight loss drugs out there that have been TESTED for use on kids? That should require 30 years of followup to be sure there are no maleffects. They can‘t even get weight loss drugs for adults that won’t kill us.

They want all of us hooked on drugs so they can force us all onto their welfare when the RX companies jack up the prices so high we can’t afford anything and our private insurers stop paying. It’s all part of their plan.

      Dinglebags
Here is what is inherently wrong with liberals in this administration:
In order to offer a solution, you must first look at the problem (the real cause).
Obesity is a problem in this country because everyone is getting fed.
Everyone is getting fed because there are cheap (and very unhealthy) solutions to hunger.
The cheap option (or food stamp option) is usually better than going hungry and thus, people eat junk food.
So the healthcare of these people also comes into the picture later.
They can barely afford to feed themselves, how will they get healthcare?
Just give them prescriptions (taxpayer funded of course), they will be fine…
It really is almost comical how hypocritical the pres and first lady are. “I’m going to smoke 2 packs of cigarettes a day, tax the crap out of them while buying mine with taxpayer money, then mandate that insurance companies cover you no matter what”
P.S. – the BMI system is generally flawed and isn’t a good indicator of your health, so what relevance does this have? Is this the stuff that Michelle and her personal aid army sit around and think of all day (in between taxpayer funded trips around Europe)?
