Bill Clinton: ‘We Should Embrace’ Keystone Pipeline

One of the “best things” about being out of office is that “you can say whatever the heck you want.” At least according to former President Bill Clinton, who said the federal government should in fact “embrace” the Keystone XL pipeline that the Obama administration rejected last month.
“One of the most amazing things to me about this Keystone pipeline deal is that they ever filed that route in the first place since they could’ve gone around the Nebraska Sandhills and avoided most of the danger, no matter how imagined, to the Ogallala with a different route, which I presume we’ll get now, because the extra cost of running it is infinitesimal compared to the revenues that will be generated over a long period of time,” Clinton said during his keynote address at the Energy Innovation Summit Wednesday.
“So, I think we should embrace it and develop a stakeholder-driven system of high standards for doing the work.”
Daily Caller’s Nicholas Ballasy provides the video and adds:
Clinton’s wife, Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, would have to approve the pipeline since it crosses international borders.
In his remarks, Mr. Clinton mentioned the advantages of not occupying 1600 Pennsylvania Ave. [...]
Toward the end of his speech, Clinton joked, “We are left with a time of real excitement here that probably won’t make the front page of the Washington Post tomorrow unless I say something outrageous which will embarrass the Secretary of State.”
But while getting to say whatever you want may be nice, Clinton did note the irony that “one of the saddest things about being a former president is that nobody necessarily cares what you say anymore…”

Exactly. Good thing Canada is revising their proposal. President Obama said way ahead of time that if none of those reroutes were made, he would reject the proposal. No compromises were made, and guess what happened. There will be a much higher chance of approval if those proposing the pipelines are willing to give up the small margins of profit involved in a slightly longer pipeline, and agree to a rerouting of Keystone. Once it is finally approved and implemented, though it will take a while to impact prices at the pump, it should go a long way in helping reduce dependence on Middle East oil.
To anyone feeling particularly pessimistic: there‘s no way China’s getting this pipeline. Canada would not be revising their proposal if they wanted China getting in on this.

Posted on February 29, 2012 at 8:03pmWould you provide link(s) to your statement obama demanded alternate routes? That is the first time I have heard that claim. If the potus had made that statement publicly, I for one would think a little differently of him.

Posted on February 29, 2012 at 9:04pmI’ll take a look for it. It was in a conversation with environmentalists I believe, it wasn’t an official statement. But the sentiment of the Left on the whole was very much out in the open, with regards to those sensitive areas of the country where the pipeline would have gone through. There was an official statement that the Obama Administration is allowing the resubmission of the proposal with reroutes, though.
I’d put money on an approval once Keystone proposes its reroutes. I, for one, am for it… With regards to oil, I really don’t think Obama is as liberal or “green” as people make him out to be. Rejecting the first pipeline, though very conditional, was one of the first times the extreme environmentalists in San Francisco seemed genuinely satisfied with him.

First of all welcome to the Blaze.
You will find within our diverse opinions here we post links to our claims. In the media I have seen on keystone, studies have been done for the past three years, then ‘suddenly’ there was this outcry about this aquifer and some envio sensitive areas. Personally, if I am going to build a widget that will reap me profits for fifty years or more; adding five cents on the dollar at start-up is trivial.
SO what is the whole story?
The potus as of yet has no control on the re-submission of the pipeline with changes; he is not dictator yet. It puzzles me – if this was obama’s opposition why did he not state it?

Posted on March 1, 2012 at 1:00amStoic One,
Thank You for welcoming me to the site. I’m sorry for not linking you off the bat. I have been reading The Blaze and its comments for a year and I have yet to witness the source citing phenomenon you speak of. I was a little offended you went on in the next sentence to mention ‘studies’– why, I don’t really understand– and not cite any sources either. I‘m going to assume you’re referring to some set of studies done by oil companies.
I‘m not sure I’ll actually find the clip I was thinking of, but here is an article I had bookmarked from a little bit before that, chronologically speaking:
http://www.mercurynews.com/presidentelect/ci_19489837
You will notice that President Obama, up until the environmental groups really laid on the pressure, allowed for the possibility that the pipeline would be approved. In fact, people seemed really optimistic he would approve it. But he told Stephen Harper that he had to consider opinions from both the Left and the Right before he could come to a decision, and that he would not rush into anything. Basic stuff there. The opinions from the Left, both from environmental groups and their representatives in Congress, were explicitly resisting the pipeline’s route just as much as its very existence. They had their own ‘studies’. That I’m sure you can Google.
It’s a old concept that politicians cater to their key constituents. President Obama had to appease the Left first, and will likely appease the Right close

Posted on March 1, 2012 at 1:17amAlso, I think we may be talking about different things…
Remember that the project is just delayed and under review.
I really don’t think the Left has enough of a reason to reject it, save for the extreme greeners.
I thought this was an interesting read as well.
http://www.foxnews.com/politics/2012/01/21/while-obama-delays-controversial-keystone-oil-pipeline-vast-network-energy/
P.S. In my above comment I actually meant ‘after chronologically’.
But I would be interested to see any studies you found interesting. I know that there are a number of people claiming that the pipeline would be a great deal safer than some of the old rickety ones in the midwest.

Posted on February 29, 2012 at 8:47pmThere are creditable studies and research that indicates that oil is not a finite commodity. It is in fact a naturally reoccurring product from the earth’s mantle. I’m sure all the phony science and manipulation of facts about the causal relationship between man and global warming are of no concern to those that also want to keep their head in the sand. Try reading Melt Down by Patrick Michaels. He believes the globe is warming just not because we drive cars.
Report Post »I too would like to have some other product to use for transportation but Pres. Obama has shown that he cares nothing about this and is just busy handing out money to anyone that can say “green” and “business” in the same speech. Example, Solyndra was continuing to receive federal handouts and bonuses AFTER they were bankrupt. Also, the largest investors were guided by the Energy Dept. on how to request more money so it could be given to the largest investors so they could recover most of their “investment”.
Electric cars, wind, solar and other hoped for technologies have been worked on for more than 100 years – maybe someday but not yet. So, in light of that we had better do something. If you like how Europe functions, go there. As for me and most others in America we want our Freedom and Liberty not some bureaucratic agency with no one responsible telling us how to live, travel, eat, sleep, wash clothes, mow lawns, how to make soap, and every other thing they can imagine.

It is created the same way as gold, uranium and rare earth metals. Chemical processes deep within the Earth’s core combine to create these elements. Over many mellinnia, tectonic upheavals force these elements closer to the Earth’s surface and make them accessible to Man.
