Bill Maher Compares Gunman‘s Beliefs to Beck’s: ‘Glenn Beck is Also a Little Nutty’

When I tell you that Bill Maher appeared on Anderson Cooper’s show last night to comment on the Tuscon shooting, you might ask, “Why was a comedian invited on purportedly serious news show to talk about the incident?” And that would be a really good question.

Then, after you see the clip, you might ask, “Can Bill Maher contradict himself any more times, or make any more false statements, in a single appearance?” And that would be an even better question.

Here’s how it went down.

Cooper started off by asking Maher the reasonable question given the circumstances (in a slightly skeptical tone), “Is it fair to place blame at the feet of anyone other than the shooter at this point?” Maher pulled no punches, responding “Yeah.” He then explained why (and kind of, sort of backtracked while attacked Glenn Beck):

I mean, not direct blame. No, this guy was clearly a nut. I mean, a schizophrenic, a paranoid. I don’t know. I’m not a psychologist. Nut is the layman’s term. But he was very anti-government. If you read some of the stuff that we have, that we know he wrote, i mean, it’s sprinkled with things, anti-government ideas, treason, tyranny, the gold — get back to the gold standard, that kind of stuff that seems like, you know, I don’t know who else but Glenn Beck talks about that stuff. I’m not saying he was specifically listening to Mr. Beck or anybody else. But Glenn Beck is also a little nutty. I mean, you know, this Jared guy’s chalkboard in his basement, I’m not sure it would look that different than Glenn Beck’s chalkboard. I think it’s disingenuous for the right wing, as I’ve heard them say today, that we can’t make any connection here or else the — or the false equivalency argument that I hear, you know. [Emphasis added]

Did he really just say that? Let’s recap. Loughner is “clearly a nut” — a “schizophrenic.” But, in his nuttiness he’s rambled off some stuff about tyranny and gold. And because Glenn Beck believes in the security of gold — which makes him “nutty” too — then they are similar. Excuse me? That’s like saying since the founding fathers hated tyranny, and so too does Jared Loughner, and since those same founding fathers were anti-government (against Britain), then Loughner and the founders are equally nutty.

He continued: “There’s a lot of nuts on the left, too. Yeah, there are nutty people on the left, too. They don’t make threats.”

Quick time out. Maher must not have seen all the Twitter messages from the weekend calling for the death of Sarah Palin.

He then dropped this whopper: “Nobody on the left is saying it would cause a rational person to do something crazy. We’re saying it goes out to the borderline cases, the nutty people. But it’s always from the right.” [Emphasis added]

As we noted yesterday, that is simply not the case. We have provided countless audio clips of people on the left rooting for, cheering, and calling for violent revolution and/or riots. Michelle Malkin noted the same things.

After attacking the Gadsen flag as violent, Maher went on to claim Giffords was targeted because she was a Democrat. When a puzzled Anderson Cooper responded that there’s nothing to suggest that, Maher would not back down:

Don’t know — sorry — I don’t agree with that. from the things I’ve read, he mentions government being controlling and too big and government is this paranoia. Glenn Beck talks about it all the time. Again I’m not saying they’re equivalent. I’m just saying I think Glenn Beck say little off, too.

Since he’s a comedian, maybe we can say he was trying to crack a really bad joke. That’s the only way to explain away these comments and the logic he uses to link and compare Loughner to Glenn Beck. Sure, he uses the ol’ “I’m not really comparing the two,” and then goes on to compare the two. That doesn’t work.

Colby Hall over at Mediaite picks up on it too, and he thinks Maher’s appearance reflects poorly on Cooper:

[F]or Maher to so neatly compare the troubled mind of Jared Loughner to Glenn Beck is remarkably irresponsible and unfair. And in the interest of “keepin’ em honest,” the booking of pseudo-comedian Bill Maher to provide insight on the media landscape and its affect on tragic shooting in Tuscon is not the proudest moment by the producers of AC360.

But Cooper’s credibility was also shot when, despite admitting there is no connection between Sara Palin’s “target” map, he still asked for Maher’s opinion on a possible connection.

How are we supposed to take that seriously?

Partial video of the interview is below:

There’s a stronger connection to The White Album and the Tate/LaBianca murders. So what are you trying to say, Bill?

    Maybe crazy is just crazy.

We can‘t cater to these people’s instability.

A schoolteacher in my state was murdered because some kid wanted her kind of car for his birthday. And wasn‘t Bill Cosby’s son killed for his nice car, too? If only we had outlawed nice cars back . Lets outlaw nice cars so no one else gets murdered because it’s obvious that nice cars incite murder.

When ever I think that Bill Maher couldn’t possible say anything more stupid he surprises me and comes up with something even more off the wall. Why in the world would anyone ask this individual his opinion about anything? He clearly believes that he is so much smarter then everyone else and has said things in the past that would seem to indicate that.
I keep hearing that the those on the right are the “haters” then I hear some of the things that people like Maher are saying. A Congresswoman is shot and other people are killed and without any evidence at all the Left immediately blame people like Glen Beck and Sarah Palin. Even Maher says that the guy was crazy and then hints that Glen Beck is similar to the murderer and then leaves the impression that somehow those on the Right are in fact responsible for this crazy person’s actions. Isn’t that hate speech? Couldn’t that influence other crazy people to violently attack those on the Right in retribution?
In the period immediately following the shooting all I have been hearing from the Left is hate and disgusting political opportunism against the Right. Even when they seem to be attempting to modify their speech they seem to be unable to help themselves and end up blaming and attacking the Right again. These are the haters and these are the disgusting slimeballs who are willing to do or say anything for political gain.

When did it become “free speech belongs only to the Left?” Mr. Maher apparently has no compunctions in making accusatory remarks, yet vilifies people who disagree with current governmental policy and implies that this disagreement is responsible for the actions of a mentally disturbed killer. I do not suggest that he stop talking, merely that “pots & kettles” reactions serve no one.

How is anything that comes out of Maher’s mouth considered “news.” Why not just interview Sean Penn, Madonna and all the other Hollywood clan? Give me a break.

Wow….For a news show to bring on a comedian to explain to the world ME makes me almost laugh. As as Libertarian I believe the government is out of control from city to Fed’s. They have bankrupted this country and keep telling me that it will be good for me and mine if they can just bankrupt me even further. Mahar does not understand that sometimes people will fight for what is right but this loon is not one of those people. Please do not lump him in with me because my fight will be fought at the ballet box and not with violence. My fight will be fought with the 10th amendment and the bible in my hand. I have no idea what this loon wants nor do I care because it is not the same fight that I am engaged in with an over reaching and oppressive government.

Used to think he was somewhat intelligent years ago, but since ‘bama’s election he has gone completely over the deep end. “But even if we or an angel from heaven should preach a gospel other than the one we preached to you, let him be eternally condemned! As we have already said, so now I say again: If anybody is preaching to you a gospel other than what you accepted, let him be eternally condemned!” (Galatians 1:8-9).

Bill Maher – Hypocrite, here he is with Barney Frank bemoaning that the Dick Cheney assassination attempt failed. direct link to the video clip: http://msunderestimated.com/RealTimePt2.wmv

“Maher: What about the people who got onto the Huffington Post – and these weren’t even the bloggers, these were just the comments section – who said they, they expressed regret that the attack on Dick Cheney failed.
      Joe Scarborough: Right.
      Maher: Now…
      John Ridley: More than regret.
Maher: Well, what did they say?
Ridley: They said “We wish he would die.” I mean, it was (?) hate language.
Barney Frank: They said the bomb was wasted. (laughter and applause)
Maher: That’s a funny joke. But, seriously, if this isn’t China, shouldn’t you be able to say that? Why did Arianna Huffington, my girlfriend, I love her, but why did she take that off right away? ”

WHOSE version of Sanity do you believe. Remember we all live in different areas of influence. And maybe this is why one mans sanity is another mans insanity, well at least saying that, we can claim that others are insane but first we have to define sanity? And who is left to do that??? It is clear to me that this young man was clearly stuck in philosophical mode for to long but what has been attributed to him should cause some to think…

He had previous contact and ask the Congresswoman a philosophical question about Government and words. And if you look at his rants about the Constitution and the lack of Government adherence to it then the question becomes what did the Congresswoman reply that set him off. We must remember that we all use words to convey thoughts and sometimes the same word means different things to different people. Just look at the hateful conversations that started right after the shooting. Some of the same people started the same conversations immediately after John McCain announced his running mate, I was at CNN.com blog with Rich Sanchez when some female ID started in about Palins’ baby not being hers and on and on. After that I started going to MSNBC and then after Keith Olbermans rants against Blil O’Reilly at the Factor and I have stayed at FoxNews ever since, because of all the deranged ranting on those two stations.

Maher slammed Palin for using the term ‘crosshairs’ and less than two minutes later, said that it was just fine for Obama to refer to ‘bringing a gun to a knife fight.’ “There are such things as guns and knives in the world.” Well, there are such things as crosshairs in the world as well. Palin never said she’d physically harm anyone–it’s simple speech. Speech that he’s being very hipocritical about. Go back and listen to that again–this guy is trying to shut down free speech. What ???

Cooper brought up the ‘quick to judge’ connection with Nadal Hasan. Great point, but Maher said he ‘didn’t see the connection.’ What? Are you serious?
