Bill Maher Defends Calling Palin a Cu** & Calls Comparisons to Limbaugh ‘Ridiculous’

Comedian Bill Maher just can’t keep his name out of the headlines — a fact, I assume, he’s more than content with. After all, any publicity is good publicity, right?
Following plenty of drama over his own disparaging words about women, Maher has waded into the Sandra Fluke vs. Rush Limbaugh waters over the past week to share his assessment of the controversy. In an interview with ABC’s Jake Tapper, the comedian drew distinctions between himself and Limbaugh, while seemingly doubling down on his past negative commentary.
Following a Tweet he sent last week saying that liberals look bad not accepting Limbaugh’s apology to Fluke, Maher had plenty more to say on his HBO program. So, on Friday, he openly defended Limbaugh’s free-speech rights on “Real Time,” but also continued his assault on the radio host.
“No one died. A guy made a bad joke. A bad joke because it was a disgusting sentiment that he was evoking, and also because it wasn’t even a joke,” he said. “He’s a stupid fat f–k who’s not funny.”
In his interview with Tapper, Maher, who has come under fire for calling Sarah Palin the c-word (among other disparaging comments against women), sought to separate himself from Limbaugh.

“I’m a comedian – not just a guy who says he is, like Rush, but someone who – well, you saw me do stand-up last year in D.C. There’s a big difference between just saying you’re a comedian and going out and getting thousands of people to laugh hard for 90 minutes,” he proclaimed.
When asked how he knows when he’s gone too far, Maher had an intriguing response: “I let the audience be the guide.” Then, rather than apologizing, he seemed to double down on his words against Palin, invoking the praise he apparently received for uttering them:
“The bit I did about Palin using the word c—, one of the biggest laughs in my act, I did it all over the country, not one person ever registered disapproval, and believe me, audiences are not afraid to let you know. Because it was a routine where that word came in at just the right moment. Context is very important, and it’s also important to remember that stand-up comedy is the final frontier of free speech. Still, I stopped doing that routine, but I would like someone to replace that word if it’s so awful with another one that has the same meaning for a person – not just women, it’s a word you can and lots do (all the British, for example) use for both sexes. It has a very specific meaning.”

It should be noted that common practice in America, unfortunately for Maher, does not generally include the wider, unisex definition of the word that he used. Since context is key — at least according to his own words — that’s certainly worth noting.
When pressed by Tapper to differentiate between the c-word and what Limbaugh said about Fluke, Maher called the comparison “ridiculous.”
“[Limbaugh] went after a civilian about very specific behavior, that was a lie, speaking for a party that has systematically gone after women’s rights all year, on the public airwaves,” he said. “I used a rude word about a public figure who gives as good as she gets, who’s called people ‘terrorist’and “unAmerican.’”
Read the rest of the interview, during which Maher denies being a misogynist.

Posted on March 15, 2012 at 12:31pmI still say that Maher is no better than Michael Richards was when he verbally attacked an African-American heckler during one of his comedy routines. Attacking one group is the same as attacking another group in my humble opinion with the use of such foul disparaging remarks. Rush certainly didn’t lower himself as much as Maher, but I still say that he could have discussed the subject without the comments that he did make. Regardless what kind of liar that Fluke really is. Once this issue is in the rear view mirror after the elections, Fluke will be left in the dust and forgotten by her now supporter. Simply put, a tool for the cause today.

Posted on March 15, 2012 at 1:54pmRJ, I agree – if Michael Richards is a comedian, such as Maher claims he is, then his n-word in dealing with a heckler is no biggie – he is a comedian, after all. Being a comedian does not give you a license to disparage people. If it is offensive, no matter how many fools laugh at your joke, it is still offensive. I’m sure you can get plenty of belly laughs telling racists jokes at a KKK rally – doesn’t matter, does it Maher, as long as the person spouting the hate is a comedian.
The problem with Maher’s assessment is he is not a comedian, he is a commenter that occasionally cracks a joke – he gets into politics with political figures on his show – he deals with issues in serious ways with serious people – he asks them serious questions and mocks only when the answer is not in line with his left-leaning mindset. It is no different than Jon Stewart, who also tries to claim the mantle of comedian to hide behind some of his rhetoric. You cross the line when your ‘act’ is structured to help a political party – when you are no longer making jokes but commenting of issues. The argument that being a comedian frees you from consequences is not an argument – it is a cop-out.

Posted on March 15, 2012 at 8:47pmI brought up the Richards incident in another thread on this site concerning this controversy. You’re all missing the point of the comparison. You see, this whole kerfuffle is NOT due to the slur. It is due to the SLURRED. Think about it for a minuet. When Bill Maher made those vicious ugly comments about Conservatives, even going as far as disparaging Sarahs’ Downs Syndrome child on more than one occasion it was totally ignored by the media . BUT when Richards let loose on the BLACK audience member all hell broke loose. The entire left wing cabal was apoplectic. Jackson and Sharpton demanded an apology and threatened him with retribution. And remember the Don Imus dust up when he made his “nappy headed” comment. Well my goodness what a chastising he received. The black man.. protected and defended, the liberal woman ditto, the conservative…. not so much. Richards and Imus could denigrate a conservative, like Maher does on a daily basis, and they would be ignored by the media and the left, but since the targets enjoy protected status all hell broke loose.

Yeah, yeah, his “schtick might make a bunch of eggheads, pony intellectuals and other assorted brainwashed miscreants laugh, but please, this guy is not funny. And since his ridicule is almost exclusively against conservatives, he’s full of (you know what) when claiming a difference exists between him (comedian) and Rush (conservative mouthpiece.) What Bill really is is a vicious, mean-spirited foul mouth……. THAT’S ABOUT IT!

She wasn’t the person she presented herself to be and the testimony she presented itself was a lie (just one highlight – $3,000 a year for birth control – my wife was on birth control for years and it cost $10 a month – I’ve got the receipts to prove it…what kind of an idiot would believe it costs $3,000 a year for birth control?) On top of that she was there to support an Obama Administration dictate that was anti religion, pro socialist and would eventually take away some of our freedoms, no matter what the liar Fluke said.
It was proven she is a Democrat party operative whose public appearances are supported by the Obama regime…
“Civilian”??? Just **one*** more case of an extremely public figure of a liberal lying.
By the way, Bill Maher can be funny in short bursts – really, but mostly I imagine his audience is very nearly 100% rabid progressive liberals and he caters to them – I wonder how well he would do with a conservative crowd. I expect he’s have a difficult time getting them to laugh for 9 minutes, much less 90.

However, one thing Limbaugh does do is present facts (most of the time) do present a cogent argument about issues. He should have done this here by pointing out that she misrepresented herself and grossly inflated the numbers to ATTEMPT to garner sympathy (though I do not understand who would be sympathetic to the financial plight of a law student that will make 140K her first year as a lawyer). That would have been sufficient and ended the issue. Because now all SHE talks about on her media tour is the verbiage, not the facts.
