Bill Maher Explains Why He Donated $1 Million to Pro-Obama Super PAC: ‘These Republicans Scare Me’

President Barack Obama isn’t the only one who gives MSNBC host Chris Matthews a thrill up his leg. On Monday night, the “Hardball” host sat down comedian with Bill Maher. In addition to praising Maher as the “funniest, smartest guy in the room,” the host spoke with him about his recent $1 million gift to a Super PAC supporting the president.

Maher, who had plenty of jabs to send in the direction of the GOP, gave the money mainly as a result of fear regarding the 2012 race. While he noted that many on the left may see the election as already sealed up for Obama, he isn‘t so sure that’s the case.

“I was trying to throw a snowball to create an avalanche here to let the liberals who do think that this is already in the bag – probably because, like me, they watch ‘Hardball’ every night and they see what idiots these Republicans are – but that’s not how the whole country sees it,” Maher explained. “And, I promise you, when it comes to election night, it’s going to be neck and neck. It’s going to be a very tight race.”

Bill Maher Explains Why He Donated $1 Million to Pro Obama Super PAC

He continued, highlighting the financial elements at play.

“Obama had a giant money advantage last time…the game has changed from small contributions to large contributions,” he continued. “He’s going to have, I think, a tremendous disadvantage.”

Maher went on to claim that half of the nation is still railing against a “fictional president” — one that has been created by false notions about Obama’s record and actions over the past three years.

“Yes, Chris, he’s a Muslim, socialist out to destroy America — haven’t you heard that?,” Maher sarcastically sneered. “They’re running against a fictional president.”

Watch the interview, below:

Maher continued his commentary in a separate interview with CNN’s Piers Morgan.

“It does hurt me to write a check for $1 million,” he admitted after Morgan claimed he was surprised the comedian had such a large sum of money to willingly give. “I’m driving a cab at night now,” Maher joked, going on to say that giving the money wasn’t an easy task.

Here‘s the rest of Maher’s reasoning:

“These Republicans scare me…After watching these Republicans debate for this last year and hearing their ideas for the country — not only do I think this is for the benefit of the nation — I would do this on a selfish level, because if we elect a Republican and they go back to the policies that were there before Obama, I could see my money getting vaporized like it did in 2008 when I had it with Lehman Brothers — I’m not blaming that specifically on a Republican administration. But the policy of not taxing the rich which was Bush’s policy, the policy of de-regulation of Wall Street, which was mostly a Republican policy. Republican policies are failed ideas…”

There’s a lot to un-package in these latter comments, specifically the charge that Bush didn’t believe in taxing the wealthy. That being said, this is much of the same rhetoric Maher has used in the past. At the least, the comedian can be respected for putting his money where his mouth is. But the commentary he’s spouting is sure to further separate him from a large segment of the nation that sees Obama — not the GOP — as the catalyst for failed policies.

These two are just a couple 5 year olds with a bigger vocabulary. They lack context, and are unable to apply reason and logic to anything. They see the world through a juvenile, intellectually bankrupt and ignorant bias. There is no way to reason with these types of people as they are perpetually immature. They twist all context to fit and reaffirm their adolescent state of mind. Without context reason cannot find truth. They are children, truth is anything you want it to be. And like children they seek dependence and that comes from the all powerful infantilizing State.

The country and the world is being run by children..

Take some deep breaths; this is the greatest country on the planet as long as we remain strong and patriotic. A house divided cannot stand. We need to celebrate our diversity which brings us the ability to overcome any austerity. Also we need to honor our most wealthy brothers and sisters, because if they decided to help out they can help us pay for Iraq and Afghanistan bills to reduce the deficit in half.

LUKERW, Read some R E A L history regarding the terms left and right when it applies to political speak. The simple truth is that the large government is on the left and small government is on the right of a graph. So, don’t fall now only a few decades old media, college professor, and left in general caste dispersion. To have run a Nazi government took a LARGE government. Thus, Nazism is left wing. For further research look up WWII Nazi propaganda posters and Communist Russia propaganda posters. They actually say the same things.

@RJJinGadsden: Your argument makes no sense whatsoever. Check out American propaganda posters of the WWII era and you will find similarities with the Nazi ones there too. Does that mean that USA = Nazi Germany? Also, if you had done a little research into propaganda art before blurting out insanities, you would have found dozens of Soviet anti-Nazi posters and even more Nazi anti-Soviet posters. They’re all over the Internet and all it takes to find them are a few clicks of a mouse. So please, spare us your lectures about “real history”. If you think the Nazi and fascist regimes of Germany and Italy were left wing, you are seriously deluded. Here’s another bit of real History for you: one of the first things Hitler did when he became Chancellor was to arrest almost all members of the German Communist Party members and to declare the mere existence of the party illegal. The Reichstag fire, started by a Communist, gave him a reason to demonize his enemies further and is considered my most historians to be the tipping point in the rise of the Nazi party in pre-WWII Germany. Please read up on the subject before you embarass yourself again.

SONICK, I’m speaking to you as a long time retired soldier who has stood on the borders of communist nations. And, have had the chance to observe from a short distance the captive citizens inside and what they were going through. Have also been inside the borders while on official duties making an even closer observation. Of course I had to leave my weapons behind with a partner while gathering information regarding accidental damage while escorted by armed guards. I was ordered not to even attempt to speak to any of the few civilians there, and even my escorts attempted to trade items with me. I was not allowed to do any such thing. I am almost 60 now and have been a military historian pretty much most of my life. I have books written in the ’40s as well as afterwards regarding propaganda of the time. As well many true historians have pointed out the meanings of the war time propaganda posters and radio broadcasts to the people. Yeah, the U.S. as well as it’s allies have had some similar posters, but similar. Not almost exact. Furthermore, two similar types of government at war with each other? Imagine that? One evil hating another evil. Funny thing, had they not had some commonalities early on, they would not have signed treaties of cooperation with each other. Guess it could have been one of those…keep you enemy closer moments, but they did exchange a lot of material too.
As a matter of fact you offer no proof in your statements either. Continued

Like I pointed out earlier. Please do a simple engine search so that you can read for yourself and not accuse me later of trying to put a ring in your nose to lead you about. But, look for the war time propaganda posters and in particular those that have been interpreted and how they actually compare. As far the ‘historians’ your refer to, if you have to offer I’ll gladly take a look, but I have already done a lot of research. Lived in Germany for almost nine years and worked some time in SHAPE, Belgium. The very most of my time in Germany it was known as West Germany. Have seen and studied some of the concentration camps as well, and one time worked with a retired COL who was the first American Provost Marshal of Auschwitz a the end of the war. Taking lessons from those who were a part of it leaves an indelible mark.

      @RJJinGadsden
I have never called you a liar or an idiot. I have, however, used the word “delusional”. As you have pointed out correctly, all propaganda posters of the WWII era have something in common: they demonize the enemy in a not too subtle fashion (American depictions of the Japanese were particularly nasty, as were Nazi depictions of Jews and Soviet representations of Nazis). In a lot of Nazi anti-Soviet posters, Communists are depicted as Jews, with all the caricatural traits that entails (big noses, etc.). My main beef with you is that you are trying to conflate two ideologies that are on opposite sides of the political spectrum: Nazism and Communism. Nazis were fervently opposed to Communists, mostly because Communists were Internationalists and Nazis were ultra-Nationalists. It doesn’t take much research to figure that one out and no serious or “real” historian worth his or her salt would contend that fact. I gave you historical examples to show there was no love lost between the two factions but you seem oblivious to them. Are any of the historians you have read denying that Hitler used the Reichstag fire as a justification to crack down on Communists, for example?

SONICK, If you would take the time to read what I actually said, I did not conflate Communism with Nazism. I was referring to the pure definition of left and right in history’s political spectrum. In it’s pure definition LEFT means large government and at the far left of the graph is totalitarianism. The RIGHT is less government with the far right being no government or total anarchy. Just as communism is a far left type of government, Nazism is as well. Oh yeah, I know all too well how Nazi propaganda pictured Jews as communist. I met a number of Germans mostly in the ’80s that would still tell you that Lenin was not a German, he was Jew. It’s disturbing and sort of like running into a KKK member in this country as far as I am concerned. No, I am not comparing the KKK to Communism either. Had to mention that just to make sure I don’t cause you to jump to the wrong conclusion again. I believe that I made it clear that there was no love lost between the two either. You are just not seeing the forest for the trees.

SONICK, I really should continue to mention that the studied comparisons of the propaganda and propaganda posters during the war do not equate the two as being the same. But, rather the goals of the governing styles were very similar and sometimes the same. Hitler really did hate Jews, but that is no new revelation. Read John Toland’s thousand page plus book, “Adolph Hitler” as well probably many other historical studies on Hitler. During Post WWI while Hitler was still suffering from his injuries from mustard gas exposure. He was still temporarily blind, he had to rely on others for what was happening during this post war turmoil when Germany was brought to it’s knees and humiliated. Several sorts of governments by various groups who were attempting to prop themselves up to replace the now failed Kaiser. Of these, many of the German Jews were pushing Communism. Hitler’s peers hated the Jews and so did Hitler. This was carried with him into his political days, and until he committed suicide.
As for our seemingly little disagreement, I would venture to say that we actually agree on more things than disagree.

I do think your understanding of history if badly tainted by conservative ideology, as you probably think mine is polluted by a lefty one. Let me just say one thing: I respect different opinions and I come here with an open mind to see what the other side has to offer. I don‘t hate people because they’re conservative, but I despise dishonesty, ignorance and general stupidity and there’s a lot of those to go around on this site. The one thing I find the most disconcerting is that the current discourse is so poisoned by ideology, people have lost all sense of balance. Which explains the daily Obama = Marx = Hitler comments, the blatant racism and the general hatred of all things perceived as “liberal”. That said, I’m looking forward to more thoughtful exchanges with you and any others… Peace out…

SONICK, Then, on that I must confess that we do agree. As for the racism, I grew up in the South when my family returned from California in the mid ’50s. I have seen racism, real racism and it had nothing to do with making a flipant such as using a soccer player’s actual name, or simply disagreeing with someone who happens to be of a different race. The race card has been tossed around so much that it‘s actual meaning has been watered down and is constantly loosing it’s significance. The Obama = Marx = Hitler comments for the most part here refer to left wing bent and not an accusation to him becoming the murdering likes of Hitler, or Lenin, Stalin, Mao, Castro, or others in history. But yes, there are a few here who do feel that way. Speaking of Castro, I was alerted from my bed at Ft Bragg, and a few hours later my unit drove our Jeeps our of Homestead AFB, FL to Key West. Spent a month working the Mariel Boat Lift and what followed afterwards before we were relieved. I got more first hand accounts of what a left wing government does to it’s people. Some people here are going to have to pull their heads from the sand and stop thinking that just because this is American we can finally do this socialist, Communist thing right this time. It has never worked, and never will without melting into a dictatorship again. I read an interesting T shirt this morning: STOP GLOBAL WHINING.

The fact that a talentless buffoon like Maher has a million to blow on Obama is an indictment against the intelligence of the American people.

No hero of mine Gonzo, I just don’t see why you feel so compelled to show your ass all the time. In fact I‘ve never found Maher’s comic styling’s all that amusing, other than New Rules.

Neither can I find justification in your writings that would indicate you are of above the average intelligence of the American people. Suck on that.

And that big 1-million bucks, Mr. 1%er…how many mouths could that have fed? You are all hypocrites. Obama’s billion dollar election boondoggle siphoned out to his plantation slaves to carve out his second term of lies could have saved the entire African continent from AIDS…you, Mr. President, are very dangerous to freedom.

What about conservative atheists? I have never seen any requirement for someone that believes in small government and people accepting responsibility for their choices and actions, that they must believe in god.

An individuals personal religious beliefs have nothing to do with the ability, or lack thereof, to intelligently speak about and understand the political landscape. There are a lot more democrats that believe in god than there are democrats that are atheists.

@ JOJO__ “There are a lot more democrats that believe in god than there are those who are atheists”. Can you back up that final statement of fact with a source please. I would be very interested to read it for myself. Thank you.
