Bill Maher: Obama Will Beat Romney ‘Like a Runaway Sister-Wife’

Comedian Bill Maher isn’t one to candy-coat his feelings. In fact, the host of HBO’s “Real Time” often seems to go out of his way to make offensive remarks.
We’ve extensively covered his quips about Denver Broncos quarterback Tim Tebow. Last night, Maher set his sights on new targets during an interview with CNN’s Anderson Cooper. During their exchange, the comedian slammed GOP presidential candidates, praised Obama and made a curious quip about Mormonism.
Perhaps his most offensive comment was a dig about Mormonism that Maher slipped into his rhetoric when discussing the general election. After proclaiming that he believes Romney will get the nomination, he said, “…then I think Obama’s going to beat him like a runaway sister-wife.”
As you are likely aware, there’s a popular television show on TLC called “Sister Wives.” The program, which documents a polygamous family’s lifestyle, is controversial to say the least. Maher’s mention, which is particularly striking considering that polygamy is forbidden by The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints (in fact, the practice would cost one his or her membership in the church), seemed to be a dig at Romney’s faith. As he delivered the joke, Cooper could be heard laughing nervously and saying ”Oh geez.”
Maher went on to say that the Republican candidates live in a “bubble of irreality” and that Newt Gingrich, Rick Santorum and Romney “make Obama look pretty good.” These candidates, he says, make him “run back into [Obama's] arms screaming.”
He also voiced his agreement with some of candidate Ron Paul’s policies:
“Ron Paul has some crazy ideas — like getting rid of the Fed…what he said about healthcare — we should just go back to neighbors helping out — just looney. But when it comes to things like the drug war and foreign policy, this guy is so great.”

Posted on January 26, 2012 at 9:33amReally..what’s the difference in any of the Progressives and Obama? They will all keep us policing the world and nation building which is costing us one trillion a year..we are 15 trillion in the hole right now..How much longer until the collapse? How much longer until Marshall Law..Obama is just waiting until after the elections to allow the already passed PIPA and SOPA which will deny our freedom of speech..They are already keeping dosiers on bloggers and journalists…and the Patriot Act along with Indefinite Detention where if they consider you a threat to their agenda..can kidnap you off the street without charges and lock you up and torture you in Guantanamo Bay indefinitely.. None of the candidates have spoken out about protecting our rights and our Constitution except Ron Pau..I heard last night that the Tea Party is getting behind him..praise be to God… You people need to wake up..Looks like a good part of the rest of the states are beginning to…

Posted on January 26, 2012 at 11:15amBut with the president delivering his State of the Union speech to Congress Tuesday night, let’s pause here to take as hard look at the real state of America, by the numbers, using only cold, hard facts.
Report Post »The unemployment rate when Mr. Obama was elected was 6.8 percent; today it is 8.5 percent – at least that’s the official number. In reality, the Financial Times writes, “if the same number of people were seeking work today as in 2007, the jobless rate would be 11 percent.”
In addition, there are now fewer payroll jobs in America than there were in 2000 – 12 years ago – and now, 40 percent of those jobs are considered “low paying,” up 10 percent from when President Reagan took office. The number of self-employed has dropped 2 million to 14.5 million in just six years.
Regular gasoline per gallon cost $1.68 in January 2009. Today, it’s $3.39 – that’s a 102 percent increase in just three years. (By the way, if you’re keeping score at home, gas was $1.40 a gallon when George W. Bush took office in 2001, $1.68 when he left office – a 20 percent increase.)
Electricity bills have also skyrocketed, with households now paying a record $1,420 annually on average, up some $300.
Some 48 percent of all Americans – 146.4 million – are considered by the Census Bureau either as “low-income” or living in poverty, up 4 million from when Mr. Obama took office; 57 percent of all children in America now live in such homes.
Since December 2008, a month before Mr. Obama took office

Ron Paul’s goal is to reduce the size of government. In order to accomplish this, you naturally have to do less. His ‘accomplishments’ are every single nay vote.
When you work within a corrupt system, and you don’t abandon your principles, its nearly impossible to get anything done when you consider every single other person you work with has abandoned their oath to the Constitution and is working against your goals.

Posted on January 26, 2012 at 11:19amSince December 2008, a month before Mr. Obama took office, food-stamp use has increased 46 percent. Total spending has more than doubled in just four years to a record high of $75 billion. In 2011, more than 46 million people – about one in seven Americans – got food stamps. That’s 14 million more than when Mr. Obama took office.
Report Post »Median household income has dropped nearly 7 percent in the last six years, taking inflation into account. What’s more, nearly 20 percent of males age 25 to 34 now live with their parents.
Low- and middle-income Americans 65 and older now hold more than $10,000 in credit card debt, up 26 percent since 2005. The average age of the American car is 10 years; in 1990, it was 6.5 years old (by the way, in 1985, Americans bought 11 million cars; in 2009, less than half that, 5.4 million).
On the macro side, America’s annual budget has jumped to $3.8 trillion – and yet the United States brings in only about $2.1 trillion in revenue. The U.S. trade deficit for 2011 was $558 billion. America’s total public debt stands at $15.23 trillion; in January 2009, the debt was $10.62 trillion. Mr. Obama is on pace to borrow $6.2 trillion in just one term – more debt than was amassed by all presidents from Washington through Bill Clinton combined. The debt is rising by $4.2 billion every day – $175 million per hour, nearly $3 million per minute.
So, America, that is the State of Your Union. But remember, Mr. Obama had not one thing to do with it. So don’t blame

Posted on January 26, 2012 at 11:24amMaher is an idiot. However, he is right about this, it doesn’t matter what polls say, obama will win by a significant margin. First of all he has a ton of campaign cash, Far more than all republicans combined. Second of all, people just don’t like mitt. Its not that mitts a bad guy or anything, but he doesn’t really inspire people, people won’t be motivated to get out of their seats to vote for the guy….
Also, many evangelicals and catholics are going to have a hard time voting for a mormon.
All we needed was one decent candidate, and we would have beaten obama like a rented mule, but the GOP couldn’t even give us one.

Report Post »As far as Bill Maher goes….why bring him any celebrity ,,,,conservatives do it to get other conservatives all revved up. I am tired of having the liberal ideas constantly thrown at us daily from ALL of the media stations. We need to turn off the Bill Maher types….and i mean flipped the channel. Hopefully HBO will get the message when his viewership is down. I have turned off Oprah several years ago and won’t watch her O channel either. It may sound a bit extreme to just eliminate these shows from my life but I do not actually need to watch. I cancelled my newspaper subscription after 33 years of daily delivery and wrote the editor and owners who are restructuring under chapter 11 and told them why they are not succeeding when people would still enjoy a cup of coffee in the morning with their newspaper. It is not internet and cable competition but rather their bias and lack of investigating the truth. The only effective way is to redraw the purse strings.

Posted on January 26, 2012 at 12:01pmI agree with your assessment on Paul. He can be very bad at explaining his ideas even when he’s 100% correct. Sometimes he nails his explanation. It’s kind of hit-or-miss. This is why it’s taken me this long to come to his support; even the slightest trouble in explaining himself gives the hostile media enough room to ostracize and riducule him, which has many of the Constitutionally-minded that should be for him, against him. Even Beck suffers from this I believe

There are no “splinter groups” of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, commonly known as Mormons. Anyone who practices polygamy, has been, is and will continue to be excommunicated by that church.
Now they can call themselves anything they like – but that does not make it so.

“There are no “splinter groups” of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, commonly known as Mormons.”
What would you refer to them as, then? Former Mormons? An excommunicated sect of Mormonism? “Splinter group” seems pretty accurate; it is a fact is that their faith is derived from the LDS, but they splintered off after polygamy was banned.
They are not part of the official LDS (which I said), but they broke off from the main body over the issue of plural marriage. I‘m not sure why you’d call this “false information.”

Posted on January 26, 2012 at 11:01amThe “splinter group” you are referring too is FLDS – Fundamentalist Latter Day Saints. Yes, they are people were Mormon and want to practice polygamy and in rare cases like Warren Jeffs become pedophiles. All groups have their wackos who have formed their own version.
However, to associate LDS with FLDS is mixing apples and oranges and those who do so, like Bill is doing so out of hatefulness as anyone in this forum. If you don’t know the facts, it would behoove you to learn them.

Again, what part of this was lying or misinforming? You yourself admit they’re a splinter group, and former Mormons. Furthermore, it’s well known that LDS sponsored plural marriage in its early days… and that the church has disavowed it for over a hundred years now. I’m really not understanding this charge of “lying” that’s being leveled here.

Also, I am pretty sure that the first LDS protestant church was the splinter group currently known as RLDS. They ran away from home before polygs were whacked.

A reference to the old saying “beat you like a red-headed stepchild,” which itself is based in racism against the Irish from the early 19th century. The sister-wife connection refers to plural marriage that was present in Mormonism until 1890 and is still practiced by splinter denominations of their faith (like the family in the show).

Offensive as usual, but it looks increasingly accurate outside the words. Glenn Beck already said that he thinks Obama will win in 2012.
Interesting twist in the article when talking about the “Sister Wives” show, though. Doesn’t mention that the family is part of an off-shoot Mormon denomination… and completely neglects that Mormonism had its basis in polygamy (though it is now banned). Likely because it’s common knowledge, but could just as easily be because Beck is a Mormon and this is his site.

That it seems likely that the author doesn’t want anything controversial to reflect on the church of LDS. It’s nothing bad, but it seems like a pretty clear bias (as in this article, where the author refuses to even mention the religion of the family in the show, nor Mormonism’s roots in polygamy).

For the article to go into a practice that is no longer practiced is sort of pointless. Otherwise, we could make the same joke about any other Christian or Jew (since the old testament has plenty of examples of prophets practicing polygamy).

“For the article to go into a practice that is no longer practiced is sort of pointless.”
Not mentioning the facts, nor the religion of the family involved, is an example of bias though. You are, of course, correct about the OT prophets; however, it’s also now what Christianity nor Judaism are primarily known as. Justified or not, polygamy was a huge talking point for Mormonism in its early decades; that knowledge lives on today.
Again, not saying that Maher was right (far from it), but it does feel like the site makes special effort to not paint LDS in a negative light.

I’ve said it before, our candidates are 3rd raters and by the time our candidate is picked, they will have so much mud on them from the other nominees, he’ll look like Obama.
Obama is doing a great job trying to change opinions about him, with the Bin Laden killing, the hostages rescued and so on. Don’t kid yourselves that the majority of voters are knowledgeable about what is going on…they’re not.
Democrats will vote for Obama. Blacks will vote for Obama. Hispanics will vote for Obama. The entitlement society will vote for Obama. Those on long term Unemployment/food stamps and have lost hope will vote for Obama.
All of our candidates threaten those people.
My prediction stands. Our nominee will win the popular vote, but will get killed just like McCain did in the electoral vote.
Also, looming in the dark, if Trump or Paul run as an independent…it is all over.
Buy your food/water/guns/ammo, because by the time Obama’s 2nd term is over…so is America.

Posted on January 26, 2012 at 8:22amI’d love to run into Bill Maher. He’d be crying like a sissy in a biker bar after I got done slapping the crap out of him.
@Gonzo. I did just that. The service provider was “shocked”. I told them this was the ONLY reason; that Bill Maher is an cheese eating commie, who needs to be slapped hard – many times, and needs to be taken out and kicked. The audible reaction was a gasp! LOL

Posted on January 26, 2012 at 8:32amThey do not understand Ron Paul at all. If they did, they would not support hin for their ideas. They think Ron Paul wants to legalize drugs, when in fact he wants to turn the process back over to the States and get the Federal Government out of the business of regulating drugs and the expansion of the Police State.
Report Post »They also think as many do that Ron Paul will dismantle the military..Not true either. he will make the military DEFENSIVE instead of OFFENSIVE and Nation building. Ron Paul will dismantle the Military Complex that is overseas and bring our troops home to defend our borders. That will put an end to unconstitutional BS and take us out of being the world’s police force…The wars would then be declared by CONGRESS and not willy nilly by a President with drones…
In the end, they would not like Ron Paul’s policies because they would not know what to do with FREEDOM and LIBERTY. They would like regulations to be in place to protect them in the free market and DR Paul would not give them the cover they need. They would also not like the repeal of Roe Vs Wade because Dr Paul would call it MURDER. Hopefully leading it to be struck down as Unconstitutional.
The Liberals can join the party and get hin elected, but in the end they will not like FREEDOM because they want the masses regulated…They want the Government to fix things and Dr Paul will not do that…
But of course most liberals do not think that deep….Especially people like Stone and Maher..

Posted on January 26, 2012 at 8:49amMaher didn‘t endorse Paul he just thinks Paul wants to legalize drugs and that isn’t the case,he just wants the states to handle the issue and get the federal government out of it.Maher is a big government liberal and the polar opposite of Ron Paul.

Posted on January 26, 2012 at 3:17pmthese guys are so dumb they think repealing the federal laws will suddenly make drug legal everywhere. That isn‘t what’s going to happen nor is it the purpose.
They will be freaking out when Ron Paul gives the bloated DC bureaucracy a haircut, and several limb amputations.

Posted on January 26, 2012 at 11:17amThe unemployment rate when Mr. Obama was elected was 6.8 percent; today it is 8.5 percent – at least that’s the official number. In reality, the Financial Times writes, “if the same number of people were seeking work today as in 2007, the jobless rate would be 11 percent.”
Report Post »In addition, there are now fewer payroll jobs in America than there were in 2000 – 12 years ago – and now, 40 percent of those jobs are considered “low paying,” up 10 percent from when President Reagan took office.
Obama took office, food-stamp use has increased 46 percent. Total spending has more than doubled in just four years to a record high of $75 billion. In 2011, more than 46 million people – about one in seven Americans – got
