Bill Maher ‘Unbaptizes’ Romney’s Dead Father-in-Law: ‘I Call Upon the Mormon Spirits to Leave Your Body the F**k Alone’

Bill Maher, the host of HBO’s “Real Time,” has a penchant for poking fun at religion (he even made an anti-faith documentary back in 2008 called “Religulous”). Over the past few months, we’ve highlighted his excessive jabs at Denver Broncos quarterback Tim Tebow’s Christian faith. At the end of January, Maher also made a comment about President Barack Obama beating GOP presidential hopeful Mitt Romney “like a runaway sister-wife” (an anti-Mormon quip).

Now, the comedian has taken his anti-religious comedy to new levels, as he has officially performed what he claims is the world’s first posthumous “unbaptism” of Romney’s father-in-law, Edward Davies.

Bill Maher Performs Unbaptism of Mitt Romneys Dead Father | Edward Davies

HBO

Following reports that Davies was an atheist (he died back in 1992) and that despite his non-belief (Romney’s brother-in-law Jim denies that his father was an atheist), he was baptized into the Mormon faith following his death, Maher decided he would attempt to reverse this baptism on his television show. The ceremony, of course, was an opportunity for the comedian to denigrate the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints.

After railing on about atheism and his belief that it is not a “religion” (a claim that some faithful people have made due to the structures and patterns that are often observed among groups of non-believers), Maher said, “If you still insist atheism is a religion, then it’s only fair that we get to do all the looney stuff you get to do. And I‘m going to start tonight by unbaptizing Mitt Romney’s dead father-in-law.”

The comedian then held up a picture of Davies, put a wizard hat on and began a mock prayer. He said:

“Dearly beloved, we are gathered here today in the presence of math, gravity, evolution and electricity, to honor brother Edward and to send the powers of Seal Team 6-6-6 to rescue him from Planet Kolob so that he can spend eternity with the kind of freethinkers he tried to hang out with on earth…I call upon the Mormon spirits to leave your body the f*ck alone.”

Watch the entire incident below (unbaptism rhetoric starts around the 4:00 mark). Content warning — this video may be offensive to some and contains strong language:

Maher had promoted the incident on Twitter both before and after he “performed” it:

The only unforgiveable sin is blasphemy of the Holy Spirit.. As I understand Bill had a Catholilc upbringing and didn’t find out his mother was Jewish until the age of 13.. Every one has a chance of redemption until the time that they are taken out of here.. Remember the two thieves on the cross..one of them saying “If you are really the Son of God..then get us off of these crosses.” while the other said..”leave Him alone..he has done nothing to deserve this ..Lord..please remember me..” Then Jesus said to him.”This day..you will be with me in paradise.” Jesus knew his heart.. There is still time for Bill Mahers. .However,,that is between Bill and God.. Jesus said..if you deny Me before men..I will deny you before my Father.

First they came for the Jews, then they came for the Mormon’s, then they came for the Catholics.

What is it going to take for you people on the message boards to realize what is going on. This is evil, whether the Mormon Churches doctrine aligns with your doctrine or not. We need to stick together when we see religious persecution. The type of faith or church being berated is irrelevant. We need to stick together because the time is coming when persecution will come to your doorstep. Who then will be left to defend you and your religious rights if you don’t stand up against this type of evil now. While it is still young.

      I said this earlier:
That all may be true but remember they came for the Jews, the mentally ill , the gays, and by the time they came for the group of the average person it was too late. We need to stick with the Morman’s even if Joe met with a/the angel he claimed as Mahamod claimed.
Morman’s are generally good people and on our side. We should stand with them.

While Bill Mahr is just a pathetic jackass this is just the start. They will hit the faults of Mormanism such as post death baptism and other things unacceptable in the eyes of religious America and also secular America. This was very strategic of this little evil jerk.
We need to hit Black Liberation Theology. Now that is a cult.

They don’t physically baptize dead people. A living person gets baptized in their stead.

If you don’t believe in it, then why should you be worried about it? Either Mormons are right, and they are helping those that have passed, or they are wrong, and their actions have no effect.

You Blazers realize this is what Mittens does right? I imagine most of you aren’t Mormons, so what they do after a Christian, Jew, Muslim, Atheist… etc. dies, is perform a posthumous baptism on them. That means that you could be chilling in heaven in the afterlife, and suddenly be ripped off to the planet Kolob to be a Mormon god of your own planet! It is really, really spooky stuff.

He should learn what the Mormons believe about people like him in the afterlife. That baptism will most likely have no effect. He is with those like him now. Sure he will have a chance to accept Jesus Christ but that will be his choice but he is no longer an Atheist as he is still living. He now has proof God exist. But he is still free to choose as he reexamines his beliefs. GOD never forces us he lets us choose. That is the primary Mormon belief.

But bill seems to think he can force his beliefs on others.

What a religious zealot secular fundamentalist Bill Maher is. He is so devout in his secular beliefs that he feels that he can make GOD like declarations. That only his books belong on the bookshelf. That if you have not his beliefs you are crazy or something. Sounds just like those fundamentalist preachers that teach fire and brimstone. Except he seems he has the power to damn right here and now. Prove there is no GOD Bill by making a Man out of nothing. But you can not even prove your primary belief in evolution. The most crazy religious belief I can think of. Make any life form out of no life then talk to me. But Maher knows that is impossible even the simplest life forms are immensely complicated.

No, because it’s not like they exhume the body. According to LDS beliefs, they go through the ceremony of the baptism, but it’s up to their spirit to accept it or not; an invitation, if you will. It’s not much different than praying for a dead loved one. However, if you’re an atheist like me, then it doesn’t matter either way, because there is no spirit to receive that invitation.

Read Leviticus 8. Maybe you will understand. Maybe not.

God will not be mocked! I don’t care what Chrisitian faith you belong to. Say what you will about The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints but understand this, I challenge anyone to find another religion that has accomplished what the LDS faith has accomplished in such a small amount of time. It could not of happened without GOD’s help and blessings.

I read vile and ignorant words in many of these comments and it is indicative of the times we live in. Nothing new. It has happened before and it is happening now.

Laugh and mock the LDS religion if you choose to do so. Laugh and mock the Latter-day Saints for the endowment which is a gift from GOD. But know this, the people were laughing and mocking Noah as he closed the door on the Ark. Those that were left outside are not laughing anymore.
You all will not be laughing someday when the truth hits you right between the eyes.

I feel very sorry for Bill Maher. The Lord will humble him in due time.

Have you trimmed your lamps and are they filled with oil? Will you be at the wedding and clothed properly?

Time will tell. Know this…GOD lives and Jesus is the Christ. I know this by the power of the Holy Ghost or The Comforter.

For even sinners love those who love them[...]But love your enemies, and do good[...]expecting nothing in return; and your reward will be great, and you will be sons of the Most High; for He Himself is kind to ungrateful and evil men. Be merciful, just as your Father is merciful.” — The Christ

The-A-Monk, seriously, are you a real Monk? In what sense are you a monk? I got this definition of Monk off of the web: “a man who has withdrawn from the world for religious reasons, especially as a member of an order of cenobites living according to a particular rule and under vows of poverty, chastity, and obedience.”

Honestly, you don’t sound cenobitic to me. Have you created your own order with you as the only member?

@Nick84 “So I guess no one here thinks its wrong that Mormons baptize dead people? Mitt’s father in law was an atheist and they “converted” his dead body.”

I am a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints (Mormons). I can completely understand how it can sound when the phrase “baptisms for the dead” is brought up. I also understand that this can create an interesting image in the mind.

However, as others have posted, we do not baptize dead bodies. Our belief is doing baptismal work for our deceased family members is rooted in the doctrine of the atonement of Jesus Christ. In other words, anyone who believes that Jesus Christ suffered and died for their sins (as I whole-heartedly do) accepts the idea that one can stand in the place of another and perform a work. The Savior taught that all men must be baptized (John 3:1-5), and this give us a wonderful opportunity to perform a baptism in the place of someone else.

This doctrine was also taught in the Bible in 1st Corinthians Chapter 15. Paul, in part, is writing to clarify the doctrine of the of the resurrection and its reality not only for the Savior, but for all mankind, and he asks the pointed question in verse 29 when he says, “Else what shall they do which are baptized for the dead, if the dead rise not at all? Why are they then baptized for the dead?” King James Version

Hopefully this helps clarify any confusion…

The truth of Christianity is that only those people on Earth who have accepted Jesus Christ as their Savior will go the Heaven. The rest are Damned. That’s sad, because that’s 75% of the World’s population right there. Of course, among the 25% of Christians, a whole lot aren’t going to make the cut because of their unforgiven transgressions.

I wonder about the other 75% of the world’s population, wonder why they have to go to Hell. Most were raised from birth in another religion, and many have never been exposed to Christianity. Does God condemn them? Many on Earth have never been exposed to any religion. Doesn’t seem fair Got ought to commit them to Hades.

Help me here. What was God thinking when he created other religions, or were other religions like the Muslim religion created by Satan? If you are born and raised as a believer in Islam, you’re going to Hell even though you were never exposed to another religion? How does this work?

With all due respect to God, if he is as the religious right would have us believe, has God condemned 75% of the world to Hell based on where they were born? Didn’t God know up front that there would be lots of Muslims in the world, or is God just clueless about what would happen in the world?

      @NICK84

When Romney’s father-in-law was baptized after he died, he was not being forced to become a Mormon. We do the baptism for the dead so IF they decide after they die, to become a member of our church, the work is already done. His father-in-law still has free agency, and is not being forced to accept our church.

      @Everyone else
Thank you for standing by us (Mormons) it is nice to see people standing up in defense of us against a clearly hateful attack against our faith. Other than a few people (including the usual trolls) your statements have generally been positive, and rest assured when the attacks come after you, we will stand with you as well. We are all brothers and sister in faith, and all follow the same God, the God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob.

To those “Christians” who have bashed Mormonism as “weird” or a “cult” because of the practice of baptisms for the dead:

You might want to blow the dust off your Bible and turn to 1 Cor.15: 29. WHAT??? The Apostle Paul wrote about baptisms for the dead?? Uh-oh… maybe Mormonism is in fact the restoration of the TRUE Church that Jesus established… complete with baptisms for the dead. Makes you think, doesn’t it??

Therefore, since Christ suffered in his body, arm yourselves also with the same attitude, because he who has suffered in his body is done with sin. As a result, he does not live the rest of his earthly life for evil human desires, but rather for the will of God. For you have spent enough time in the past doing what pagans choose to do–living in debauchery, lust, drunkenness, orgies, carousing and detestable idolatry. They think it strange that you do not plunge with them into the same flood of dissipation, and they heap abuse on you. But they will have to give account to him who is ready to judge the living and the dead. For this is the reason the gospel was preached even to those who are now dead, so that they might be judged according to men in regard to the body, but live according to God in regard to the spirit.

The end of all things is near. Therefore be clear minded and self‑controlled so that you can pray. Above all, love each other deeply, because love covers over a multitude of sins. Offer hospitality to one another without grumbling. Each one should use whatever gift he has received to serve others, faithfully administering God’s grace in its various forms. If anyone speaks, he should do it as one speaking the very words of God. If anyone serves, he should do it with the strength God provides, so that in all things God may be praised through Jesus Christ. To him be the glory and the power for ever and ever. Amen. That same day the Sadducees, who say there is no resurrection, came to him with a question. “Teacher,” they said, “Moses told us that if a man dies without having children, his brother must marry the widow and have children for him. Now there were seven brothers among us. The first one married and died, and since he had no children, he left his wife to his brother. The same thing happened to the second and third brother, right on down to the seventh. Finally, the woman died. Now then, at the resurrection, whose wife will she be of the seven, since all of them were married to her?”

Jesus replied, “You are in error because you do not know the Scriptures or the power of God. At the resurrection people will neither marry nor be given in marriage; they will be like the angels in heaven. But about the resurrection of the dead–have you not read what God said to you, ‘I am the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob’? He is not the God of the dead but of the living.” (Matthew 22:23-32 NIV84)

I believe Paul is asking why they baptize people for the dead. He said in 30 And why stand we in jeopardy every hour? If we can be baptized after we are dead then why are we in jeopardy? Also according to Peter in ACTS 2:38 then Paul in acts 10, and 19 we need more than just being baptized to be saved. According to those 3 sections even if you were baptized after you were dead and if it even worked if you don’t fulfill everything you die lost.

“What’s more embarrassing, Mormon theology or Bill Maher? ”

Most embarrassinhg is your asking that question.

      Darren,

Know what’s embarrassing. 95% of mormons in Nevada voted for Romney in the caucus. They won’t vote for the other Christians. Mormons did the same thing in 08 and would not vote for Huckabee.

Mormons vote for mormons. I guess you guys think you’re a better kind of Christian. LOL.

Hope the book of Abraham facsimiles are not keeping you awake at night. We had some good discussions on here a while back before I was blocked. I think I freaked a lot of mormons out with my quotes from B.H. Roberts, JS, BY, and the dreaded book of Abraham facsimiles found in the N.Y. library in 1967. Darn it, mormon scripture was a hoax and they found the proof in the N.Y. library. Now its all over the internet.

And Jensen’s recent speech (member of the 70) where he admitted mormons are leaving in numbers that were only matched in Kirtland. Priceless. The truth is out.

Um, let’s see, Mormon here…couldn‘t care less about Romney BECAUSE he’s a Mormon. Maybe I’ll vote for him, maybe I won’t. Waiting to see how this race pans out. But stop and think before going out and casting around generalities and poorly made assumptions about us.

Well why is this rascal trying to say someone could be baptized after they were dead and having lived a full life refusing baptism? That is so cruel and rediculous, to imply a real religion would do those things. I bet brother Bill is not one of the elect, that’s for sure!

For anyone who doesn’t already know, monicne is a troll, posting under a ‘false-flag’ pretening to be a TEA Party supporter, but is actually the opposite. He usually posts things that are outrageous and tries to make the TEA Party look bad by doing so.

Just ignore his posts entirely. Best advice is not to engage him.
He also posts as encinom and moncine in addition ot monicne. (note they are all anagrams)

Satan must be dying of embarrassment to have this self-appointed promoter of atheism representing him on the public stage. Maher’s buffoonery is not likely to draw any converts. He is but a sad, angry little man who deserves our pity.

Not believing in an organized religion does not make you a believer in Satan if you do not believe in God or Jesus you do not believe in Satan, or any other man made ideology.

bastone and cariboo: Just because athiests don‘t believe in satan doesn’t mean he doesn’t exist. And billy boy is doing satan’s bidding whether he knows it or not. He happens to be doing a piss-poor job of gaining converts to the cause of atheism (which is one of satan’s many goals)…therefore a disappointment to the father of darkness. billy boy’s belief or non belief in satan in irrelevant. The Truth is a constant and is not dependant on belief in order to be true.
