Bill O’Reilly Calls on Congress to Pass Another Gun Law During Heated Segment

Popular Fox News host Bill O’Reilly called on Congress to pass another gun law in the wake of the Colorado theater shooting. But it’s a position that was unpopular with GOP Rep. Jason Chaffetz (Utah) on Tuesday night’s “O’Reilly Factor.”
O’Reilly believes that the sale of any “heavy” weapon should be reported to the FBI. He called it “common sense” during his segment with Chaffetz. Chaffetz disagreed.
Mediaite has some of the back-and-forth:
Chaffetz said that the FBI should not be given a “master list” of every gun owner in the country, but O’Reilly interrupted Chaffetz to say that he was misrepresenting what he said. O’Reilly said that if you go to flight school, the FBI knows about it, but not if you purchase a machine gun. Chaffetz said O’Reilly’s assertion was “absolutely not true.”
Chaffetz said that anyone who buys heavy weapons has to get a tax certificate from the ATF and pass a background check. O’Reilly countered by pointing out the gun show loophole in the law, to which Chaffetz responded, “You can’t just buy a bazooka.”
The two continued to argue and O’Reilly even began raising his voice with the congressman. And after Chaffetz wasn’t swayed, O’Reilly retorted:
“If the FBI is alerted that somebody is buying 60,000 heavy-duty rounds, they’re going to check it out, because that’s what anti-terrorism is! That’s what they do!… You’re telling me you object to this? This doesn’t intrude on any hunter, anybody with a handgun to protect themself, anybody with a rifle, this is an AK! Come on!”
Chaffetz disagreed: “Absolutely it is.” He even later accused O’Reilly as being “misinformed” about the laws.

The reporting is already there, as the congressman said, because it’s common sense that you cannot just walk up and buy an automatic weapon without filing for a class 3 license, a background check, etc. I‘ve lost all respect for Bill O’Reily.

He also doesn’t have a clue as to why we have a second amendment. It’s not so we can fend off violent civilian criminals or so we can hunt. Federalist 28, 29, and 46 make that quite clear.
Bill and the other gun grabbers have outlived their usefulness and have instead become a threat to our freedom. Posted on July 25, 2012 at 9:53amO’Reilly is becoming a pacifier to some extent. Gun laws don’t prevent crimes at all but idiot liberals will state that gun violence has gone down when in fact gun theft and other violence has gone up (see Chicago). It is a two part issue that liberals fail to see.
1. When citizens are given obstacles to obtain something they have every right to have, the citizen is now susceptible to more harm and danger whereas most crimes involving guns are not done by the registered user as criminals know this leaves a paper trail…common sense that liberals never understand.
2. When government is allowed to create laws that disarm the citizen then government has now alleviated the concern for uprising and no longer fears the citizen as the second amendment clearly states and has been toted by many past presidents that understood that a centralized government with power equals tyranny.
Since our liberal friends out there fail to see this side and state gun control is in the best interest of public safety, we have to argue with stats and local towns and states to get the adverse statistics to this argument. The criminal mind is far more intelligent than that of a liberal legislator. The conservative mindset is deterrence and not mandate since most people have a brain and understand consequences of their actions and know all too well that an armed citizen is vastly more safe than that of a citizen who is waiting for the police to protect them.

@ Hammerdown- I agree with much of your post. With regard to the 6000 rounds- actually that is not too much when you consider that we go through about 2000 rounds per firearm tactical class (three classes in a two month period) PLUS ammo for practice, you can blow through that in no time.

Now we “surf” continually during his show. If he’s almost lost me and mine, I can only imagine how others, less tolerant, are feeling. If Bill doesn‘t figure it out soon he’ll be standing in line with Olbermann, looking for an audience.

I like Bill but with this subject he either is basing his position solely on emotion or he got some REALLY bad information on A) what a heavy weapon is and B) what a person has to do to get a “class 3” weapon. Also, he repeatedly claimed that the batman shooter purchased 60,000 rounds of ammunition. It was 6,000 and I would have overlooked it as a simple mistake if it slipped out once but he repeated that 60,000 number a couple times. And where exactly did his hatred of the AK47 come from? It wasn’t even part of of the shooting he is ranting about. Maybe tonight he’ll go off on how easy it is to get a flamethrower. So much for the No Spin Zone. But it is unusual for Bill to come undone like that. Wonder what’s going on.

CO is one of the ONLY states that allows people to purchase and own a fully automatic weapon but BOTH the seller and the buyer must have a Class 3 ATF license to do so which ALREADY requires an FBI fingerprinting and background check and you usually have to be a collector or historian to qualify.
the problem with O’Reily and those like him, even in the GOP, is that they hear “assault” weapon and ASSUME fully automatic. A good marksman can fire a semi-auto AR-15 or AK-47 almost as fast as a full auto with the correct trigger modifications and skill and the average SHMUCK like O’Reily would never know the difference…

What a moron, they have been requiring NICs checks at gun shows for some time now. 3) And lastly he thought you could buy fully auto guns without a special license. He doesn’t even understand that an AK is consider a medium sized weapon not a heavy weapon like Bill was trying to say. If the movie theater allowed concealed carry, the killer probably would not have tried what he had, OR he would have been taken out before 12 were dead and 71 injured. If they tracked ammo purchases, the killer could have just as easily made a bomb, or used poison gas, or bought ammo in small purchases, etc.
I routinely buy ammo 1000 rounds at a time. It is much more economical. When I go to the range I typically shoot 200 rounds, so it doesn’t take long to go through 1000 rounds.
You cannot protect yourself from evil by disarming the good.

I think it is clearly evident that Bill does not own a single firearm unless it was gifted to him by his Father, etc. If he had ever purchased a firearm he would understand the FFL process that runs your background check through the Justice Department’s system that has been used for years. More laws are not the solution. Someone who is committed to murder in their heart cannot be deterred by the laws of lesser men. You solve this with stricter enforcement of the laws that already exist. No more public dog and pony show for the murderer. Give him a trial by his peers, but also give him the punishment he deserves. No death row for the rest of his life. His rants against big oil give him away and when he was too busy to have some of the Repub primary canidates on, his view that so much of the “right wing” agenda is just too far right to interest independents, dissing the Tea Party etc. Fox does say Fair and Balanced, what you learn from this guy is how to spot a Rino or fake conservative. I usually watch news at night, don’t even turn on tv until 9 or so. Have found that by starting on Fox Business at 9:00 through midnight you get good insight from the business angle about the effects of politics and policy with Willis, Dobbs and Cauvato, then switch to Hannity, Greta, The Five. If it looks like something may actually be important like the shooting, Fox is usually doing updates so you get filled in on the important stuff, I spend a lot of time online and so on. Greta is another one I suspect of being a Rino or Liberal but she gets more than her share of put downs so I’m good with that. O’Reilly just gets on my last nerve with his dismissive attitude of the people he disagrees with, so don’t watch at all. Don’t actually watch Beck much anymore, loved his Black History month and suspect he is right about some of the things he says but have enough other interests to not follow his online show. Just check the Blaze. That’s just me.

People like O’Reilly think a semi-automatic anything is the same as an automatic anything and is a bad gun..and bazookas too. I don’t think a bazooka would work well in the woods except to chew. Large capacity clips are extra bad. He don’t know that it take only seconds to change clips. Standard semi-automatic hunting rifles and shot guns are bad. Anything with AK or M- in the name is real bad. And he wants to write new laws? O’Reilly is a NY guy who thinks that all fly-over-country folks ride horses, carry six guns and raise cattle or pigs.
O’Reilly makes no sense…he wants bigger government to control us better and wants less taxes to pay for the bigger government all while he carefully avoids getting to the truth. The truth is that certain people can be dangerous with a knife, gun, rifle, or a bazooka. Those people need to be delt with appropriately and not everybody else. Rowanda saw a half million people massacured with machettes. Does O’Reilly want to outlaw machettes too? Has O’Reilly ever spoken about how the mentally ill are treated by government. They are politely asked to take their medicine and the nut rarely takes it. The government then waits until the schizo-nut kills somebody. Then they force the nut to take their medicine in jail or while on death row. That is the substance of the government mental health plan.

Step 1-You must find a dealer with a Class III FFL as they’re the only ones who may deal in NFA weapons (machine guns, silencers, etc.) and select a weapon that was registered in the NFA registry before 1986 (this only applies for full-auto, silencers and AOW can be brand new)
Step 2- 2 Form 4s.
2 photographs of yourself attached to the Form 4s.
The CLEO must sign the form 4s. (usually the County Sheriff, but there are others that
Other that can quality.
2- Fingerprint cards.
1- Citizenship form.
Background check by the ATF/FBI and the CLEO.
Step 3-Pay the $200 tax stamp
Step 4-Take possession of your weapon. See #5
Step 5- Have a large amount of cash. The last time I checked a full auto AK was $10,000+. May be higher now.
The largest impediment is that the NFA registry was closed to full-auto in 1986, therefore only LEOs or Class III FFL’s may legally posses a post-86 full auto. Also you pay for this up front and if you are not approved you still own it in the gov thinking but it stays with the class III dealer. You do not get to take possession. All you can do is try and sell the damn thing.

I made the mistake of saying I owned some of what he was describing so he may send the FBI after me. He didn’t seem to know the difference between semi auto and fully automatic. I most sincerely hope someone can school him on the differences and make it clear we do not need any such law as he proposes.

I liked the short, concise, hard-hitting format that Beck had on Fox, and even though I’ve signed up for him online, I don’t watch him – 2 hours is too long and he rambles – just don’t have the time, and trying to watch on laptop linked to TV via HDMI just doesn’t work well. I like Dobbs, Hannity, Greta, among, online sources.
If you haven’t read “The Creature From Jekyll Island” by G. Edward Griffin, I highly highly recommend – an eye-opener for me a few years back (no, I’m not related and will not profit from hawking his book).

He is also guilty for the first time I have seen of gross exageration when he says 60,000 rounds were purchased. It was closer to 3,000 rounds. That is not an unusual amount if someone is a responsible gun owner and trains and practices regularly. I regularly buy 1,000 rounds at one time to get sales prices, and try to practice weekly, shooting 100 to 150 rounds a week. Fully automatic guns of any sort require an ATF tax of $200 per weapon, a background check, and usually takes about 6 months to get the paperwork processed.
Terrorists will not try to buy 60,000 rounds at one time. They will not legally buy a fully automatic weapon, they will only be able to get one illegally, or through the Justice Department and Fast and Furious. Bill… I am disappointed.

There mentally illl individuals who snap and acquire weapons and do horrible things as we have witness on more than one occasion. For individuals and the NRA to continue to support this madness without any regulation or control is irresponsible. It was different age when the 2nd Amendment was crafted and it written for a specific reasons. However, any resonable person can see that there should be limits in this age of terroism. The people in that theater had rights also and that was protection as stated by the 1st amendment. Everyone in America is subject to laws that restrict thier freedoms in one way of another. Laws are made and revised for the common good which makes us a civilized nation. No one is advocating confiscating guns, just making heavy weapons reportable. If there are such laws on the books, why was the Colorado shooter able to amass such an arsenal over a period of months undetected? For this to happen, there must be a loophole and there is no denying it.

You go in fill out a form and they dial a number and in 5 minutes you are carrying your gun out. I bought a AR-15 in February and it didn’t take me 5 mins. from the time i payed to put it in mt truck. Hand guns are a lot harder you have to file for a permit and it takes three days to get it and you can only get three permits to purchase at a time. If you have a concealed carry permit you can purchase a handgun without waiting because you already did a background check when you got your CC permit. People have adds all the time for Ak-47 and AR-15 for sale and there is no paperwork need when you are not a dealer selling a gun you already own unless it is a hand gun.

Using this logic, under the 2nd amendment citizens could purchase any weapon that could be used by the military. If enough American’s concerned about our freedoms and are willing to go out and buy an AK or AR15 with a few thousand rounds of ammunition (instead of buying the newest iphone/ipad or hair gel and skinny jeans) and pledge to defend this country and our liberties like our founding fathers, our grandfathers and in some cases our own fathers have done thoughout history, then we could hang on to what used to be the once great America.

I hope after reading this article you are starting to wake up. The so called conservatives are really progressive liberals. We have to elect people that will protect the Constitution. We have to elect people who understand that government is the problem not the solution.
1. Romney is pro gun laws.
2. Romney wants to repeal and “REPLACE” Obama/Romney care. Get the gov. out of healthcare should be his answer.
3. He supports other Constitution crushing laws like the Patriot act and NDAA.
4. He has been pro choice all his life, well up until the last five minutes or so.
5. He doesnt believe the FED is a problem and believes Bernanke is doing a good job.
6. He doesnt end the wars bankrupting our nation. He even wants to expand them.
7. His budget doesnt cut current spending levels. He has basically endorsed Obama’s spending.
Look, I want Obama gone. I just dont want to replace him with a guy with the same nation breaking polices. At least with Obama, you know what you are up against. Give Romney and the rest of the liberal progressive GOP a chance to make laws and we could be in worst shape rights wise than we are now. We need real nation changing polices. We need a budget that actually cuts current spending levels. We need to end the wars that are bankrupting us. We need to phase out SS. We need to audit the FED and restore a sound money system.

When we hear from the so called “right” this kind of garbage out of Fox, talk radio, Rubio, West, McCain, and Romney that is when its so hard to understand the thinking of this nation.
People are slamming Bill here, but dont slam the politicians who want gun control and indefinite detention (Romney).

Posted on July 25, 2012 at 7:48amIdiot, if you buy a machine gun you must have a tac stamp which requires an FBI background check with prints, I know this for a fact. 60,000 rounds of 5.56 will last my household about 5-6 months, there are 5 of us and we shoot for hours almost every day. I own a few AR’s and yes I hunt hogs with some and have another in .308 I hunt deer with. I fit all of O’stupids criteria for being a mass murderer but I believe the use of deadly force should be an absolute last resort to defend your family, property or yourself, thats the law here.

Posted on July 25, 2012 at 4:16pmAn AR-15 is a semi-automatic version of the M-16. the caliber is about the same as a .22 rifle, scarcely a “heavy weapon.” I”ve been to many gun shows and have NEVER seen an illegal firearm for sale. Yes you CAN buy illegal weapons from illegal sources. No law is going to stop that. As for full auto guns, I believe they have to be made before a certain date. Besides the red tape, you have buy a $500 stamp. The artcle I read stated the number of full auto guns are in short supply because of the date cutoff, making the price in the 5-figure range. O’Reilly has lost all credibility.

So if we have a gun ban all the Criminally Insane will say, “O its against the law for me to own a gun and I really want to kill people, perhaps I’ll just pull out their nose hairs instead.” O’reilly lives in a fantasy world of his own making.
His diatribe about oil and gas pricing made blood shoot out my eyes and I haven’t watch him since. Obviously noone at Harvard told him about the futures and commodity markets.

Over 10 years ago, maybe 15 or so, storekeepers here were required to remove any toy gun that in any way resembled a real one…including those dime-store shiny silvery plastic six-shooter cowboy cap guns – even if they had the orange plastic tip that they were using to show that they WERE toys. They couldn’t sell them, and they were stuck with any stock they had because the vendors wouldn‘t take them back because THEY couldn’t resell them. Stupid is as stupid does….and it’s nothing new.
