Billboard Battle: Catholics Put Up Pro-Christmas Billboard Near Atheists‘ ’Reason’ Message

Recently, a group called American Atheists purchased a large, anti-Christmas billboard outside the heavily-traveled Lincoln Tunnel between New York and New Jersey. Now, a Catholic group has started a billboard war of sorts by purchasing a pro-Christmas message of its own on the other side of the tunnel.
“You Know It’s Real: This Season Celebrate Jesus,” a billboard for the Catholic League says on the New York side of the tunnel. That’s in response to the American Atheist billboard on the New Jersey side, which says “You Know It’s a Myth: This Season Celebrate Reason.”
“We decided to counterpunch after a donor came forward seeking to challenge the anti-Christmas statement by American Atheists,” Catholic League President Bill Donahue said in a statement on the group’s website. “Our approach is positive, and services the common good. Theirs is negative, and is designed to sow division. It’s what they do.”
“So after Christian motorists have had their sensibilities assaulted as they exit New Jersey, they will experience a sense of joy, and satisfaction, as they enter New York City,” he added. “It’s what we do.”

If any of you think I’m a “coward,” because I’m an Atheist, please get a flight to KCI airport, give me a call. I’ll pick you up, we can have lunch, and then we can “discuss” your problem somewhere private for a few minutes. In the meantime, Merry Christmas to all of you…Christian, Atheist or whatever…..

Posted on November 30, 2010 at 11:02pm@ coffinman: I would venture to say that most Christians have no animosity toward atheists, and don’t want to pick any fights with them. However, a certain segment of atheists are particularly anti-Christian, and they happen to be very vocal (as evidenced by the billboard and anit-nativity scene crowd). We feel our freedom to worship is being threatened, diminished and often ridiculed by the left, and that instead of a “ live and let live” attitude we Christians are having our rights taken away by an angry minority. Well…it makes us angry! And we are imperfect, so we lash out. We often do not take the high road, and it makes us look like hippocrits. So sorry. Merry Christmas!

I’m quite certain that no post critical of atheists was directed at you personally. I believe the “coward” remarks were reserved for David Silverman and his sponsors who attacked Christianity with their “Celebrate Reason” billboard. I’m sure all commenters on this site (like me), in one way or another, appreciate your contribution to this great nation by serving in the USMC. Merry Christmas to you as well. Posted on December 1, 2010 at 12:03amI was once like you, CoffinDude, felt very strongly that I should deny God. But, you know what happened? I found that I just couldn’t. I tried for a very long time, but I just knew it wasn’t true. I don’t know really how else to describe things; I just knew. You can tell yourself all you want that God doesn’t exist, that doesn‘t mean you’ll believe yourself.
Anyway, if you want to look at the situ from a logical perspective, use Pascal’s Wager. Either Christians or atheists are right. If I’m right, death will be a very unpleasant surprise for you. If you’re right, so what, lol? You won’t even be able to rub it in, and I won’t be around to care that I was wrong.
I’m not trying to dis your views, btw, we’re all entitled to believe what we will. Atheists only irritate me when they try to force their beliefs on me. I can say the same of Jehovah’s Witnesses and Mormons. And often do. :)

Posted on November 30, 2010 at 10:16pmI’ve never understood why an atheist defines himself as a non-believer in God. The atheist is acknowledging God but doesn’t believe in Him. If I didn‘t believe in UFO’s, I wouldn’t define myself as and a-ufo-ist. You know? It just wouldn’t come up in my normal conversation. But atheists have to make sure that everyone knows they don’t believe in God. Weird. I‘ll bet they still use the terms BC and AD to describe historical periods of man’s existence.

Posted on November 30, 2010 at 10:57pmThis is a valid point. I remember my college studies in philosophy where, using logic, they proved the existence of God by asking the question “Does God exist?” How can something not exist if you are asking about it?
Report Post »Malachai
Posted on December 1, 2010 at 2:24amTruth… I strongly advise you ignore everything you learned in that philosophy class as that statement is idiotic at best. If that were true, I’d be talking about the 1 billion dollars in my dresser or the hot pback of super models in my bed room. Or, I could say “Does the Flying Speghetti Monster Exist?” Well, he must, because we are talking about him!
Seriously… that is 3rd grade philosophy. :/
Report Post »Objectivist_AisA
Posted on December 2, 2010 at 2:44pmWell, college philosophy classes are, unfortunately, pitiful. I had an ethics class, and rather than presenting any real alternative to altruism, it basically took altruism as the default proper morality and discussed different ways to apply it to every day life. What was never brought up was that the branch of philosophy known as ethics is needed even if you are a single human being living on a desert island. Everything discussed was based on how we should treat other people, rather than realizing that it should be a framework on how to seek our values as an individual. Politics is the branch that applies properly discovered ethics to a social setting. The errors in current philosophical teachings are the root of the problems in the world today.

you really don’t understand 20th century history nor the history of the human species if you claim atheism is murderous.
religion is the cause of most all violent state sanctioned deaths.
Report Post »Objectivist_AisA
Posted on December 2, 2010 at 2:34pmI assume you are referring to secular regimes such as the Nazis and the Communists under Stalin. It is true that they were atheist regimes/societies, but that is not the FUNDAMENTAL reason for their murderous ways. In fact, they share 2 very important underlying philosophic ideas with murderous religious societies – subjectivism (i.e. non reason) and altruism. (In fact, the first idea automatically leads to the second). THIS is what led to their embrace of genocide. Religion and secular dictatorships are 2 sides of the same anti-reason coin. In the case of religion, faith is held above reason, and sacrifice (altruism) for an omnipotant deity is held. That deity’s “will” is held as the standard of right and wrong. If that deity demands that you sacrifice your own child (in the case of a well known Bible story), forget that reason tells you the opposite is best – just obey. In the case of secular communist or socialist societies, “society” or “the state” replaces deity as the standard of good and evil and the proper recipient of your sacrifice (altruism). The fact that the first example refers to a religious society, whereas the second refers to an atheist society is purely coincindental. They both wholeheartedly embrace sacrifice as their moral ideal, which can only, and does only, lead to death for its participants.

Posted on November 30, 2010 at 10:28pmBrain Enema, the Catholic sign is NOT trying to convert anyone. It is simply saying there is a God and His Son was born on Christmas. It is just responding to the atheist sign, and I say it is about time that Christians stand up for themselves more visibly.

Meant to say “I” volunteer there in the food closet. Thanksgiving week we helped about 1700 people, and set to pass 22500 for the year, not including the holidays. Only have a couple dozen volunteers as well.

Posted on November 30, 2010 at 11:14pm@UntameableKate: I didn’t say ALL if you read closely. But I‘m sure you’ve seen that there are some people who respond to every single article. Those are the folks I’m talking about. I’m in the same boat you are as far as working, schooling, churching etc and wanting to talk to people who actually care. A lot of people I know don’t. I fear for them.

the catholic religion has gone from controlling the entire of europe 500 years ago to placing billboard signs on the side of the jersey turn-pike to combat a lame attempt for a “call to reason” by some secular/atheist group.

If there were no God,
There would be no atheists.
By commutative principle, ( All of you mathematics / algebra geeks, work with me…)
God exists, therefore,
Atheists exist.

Posted on December 1, 2010 at 1:04amButcher… Jesus was a fraud.. Really? If you don’t believe in Jesus your soul is in jeopardy. You work for Satan. You mock, you lie & you don’t have facts in your arguments. Time is short. You can still accept God or not & face the consequences. It’s up to you, not us.

Read “Finding Noah” at http://www.marcrubin.com/noah-index.ivnu where artist Marc Rubin lays out the archeology/art history/bible research he did for a painting exhibition he created for Holocaust survivors at their request.. Marc found history has been revised and rewritten since 3000 BCE. Radio Interview: http://www.marcrubin.com/judean-eve.ivnu
Marc had to answer questions like “what did Abraham and Noah’s clothing look like” in order to paint them. Online exhibition: http://www.marcrubin.com/or.ivnu

Posted on December 2, 2010 at 3:23pmNobody tells the story of how Rome (Constantine) deified the prophet that everyone was following. Romans began to follow the Ten Commandments (actually 7 Noahide Laws) and keep Jewish dietary laws.
For Power and Control, a story almost as old as man, Catholics deified Jesus thereby breaking the First Commandment. Does anyone think God can inhabit a body without literally EXPLODING IT? God put his essence into a point of physical matter and created the Big Bang.
The “Watchers” (read Enoch and Genesis) have human (like) appearance, but they are NOT GOD. They are also part of His creation, as are we.
Report Post »SemperCivis4Ever
Posted on December 2, 2010 at 3:37pmTo be clear: Jesus was not one of the Watchers. He was a man. A very good man who shook the Jewish establishment of the time.
Who will shake them today and unite them so they remember who they are before the Watchers let a meteor hit the earth and wipe out an ignorant, uncomprehending humanity?
Abraham did not pray in a synagogue, he walked with God. Jesus walked with God. Noah walked with God. The prophets all walked with God. Who listens to the people who walk with God today? They get drowned out by the orthodoxy who pretend they have faith, but don’t really believe in God.

Two thumbs-up! As far as I know this is still a free country and we still can do what the hell we want to, when we want to, anywhere we want to, as long as its legal.
NOTICE: I have noticed that BROKER0101 does NOT have the “Report Post >>” option showing. Does anyone know why? While I’m talking about the jerk… has anyone ever noticed how he NEVER comments about the subject at hand, he simply mocks people and then hides back under his Mommys skirt. Report Post »Coffin…here is the problem with the athiest philosophy as far as i can tell…it would seem that the number of athiests that donate or volunteer to charity is practically non existant and thus contribute less to the common good of the less fortunate around them. In fact the idea of compassion which is exaulted in a Christian society is considered a weakness in many of the more ‘athiest’ societies in history like Japan’s bushido or the ultimate socialst/athiest idea of Eugenics which was based on social Darwinism.
