Bills WR TD Celebration Mocks Jet Player Getting Shot in the Leg

After catching a redzone touchdown during the second quarter against the New York Jets on Sunday, Buffalo Bills receiver Stevie Johnson mocked being shot in the thigh.
Johnson’s particular choice of dance moves are not common, and in fact cut deeper than a receiver simply celebrating following a score. The dance was observed by Jets receiver Plaxico Burress from the sideline. Burress served 20 months in prison for shooting himself in the leg in a nightclub in 2008 while he was with the Giants. The ordeal put Burress’s career and life in jeopardy.
Johnson caught the 5-yard pass, got up and, in his short celebration, acted as if he shot himself. He then ran to the left side of the end zone mocking the “flight” celebration the Jets often use after scoring.
It was only when Johnson fell to the ground at the end of that second demonstration that he was penalized 15 yards for excessive celebration.
Burress would have the last laugh though, as Johnson dropped two key throws from Bills Quarterback Ryan Fitzpatrick during the last drive of the game where the Bills failed to answer a late Jets touchdown that put New York on course to beat Buffalo 28-24.

Report Post »This excessive celebration rule crap is just there to make Pro Football more like PeeWee Football.
Where everyone is a winner and winning means nothing.
Burress should be made fun of. Him and Vick should be made fun of till they quit.
The NFL should have banned both of these losers for life. Period.

Posted on November 28, 2011 at 11:21am@decendentof56 The touchdown celebration rule is nonsensical at best. Whether it is entertaining or not rests with the beholder. But similar to every level of government, the NFL has gotten out of control in terms of managing the game in favor of the owners. Quarterbacks and wide receivers can only be hit in rare instances and only the networks, commercials and teams can exploit the game and the players. At the end of the day it is a game. Get rid of the excess money, including the overpaying of players and excess control and let them play the game.

Posted on November 27, 2011 at 10:35pmI saw this- moron. After this, the media said the Bill’s player was mocking Santonio Holms- but he was mocking Plaxico Buriss. He got his team penalized for taunting, which was the right call. Plaxico scored a touchdown a few minutes later- living well is the best revenge, I guess. The Lions were mocking Tim Tebow a few weeks ago- and things aren’t working out so well for them these days. What goes around comes around. If I were coaching the Bills- right now I’d be thinking long and hard about having a player on my team that got them penalized- all over a rather stupid display.

Posted on November 27, 2011 at 10:01pmI don’t enjoy football (hockey is the only sport I follow), but I do respect the hard work, excellence, and skill it takes to make a great athlete. I also respect good sportsmanship, particularly when it comes to guys who are idolized by thousands of kids. I do not, however, have any respect for the NFL, which is filled with thugs, degenerates, criminals, and self-aggrandizing buffoons. The NBA isn’t much different either. I think it‘s emblematic of the state of decadence we’ve sadly reached in our nation.

Posted on November 28, 2011 at 10:24amI follow the NFL closely, and love the game. I can see though how a clip like this for people who do not watch the game regularly get the impression that this is the norm. It certainly used to be, but it is really becoming more rare taht you see something like this. That’s the reason it is news.
I think the NFL is making great progress on enforcing personal conduct of it’s players. If you’ve followed the game over the past 5 years of so, since Goodell became commissioner, it’s not the same league it was. Teams are starting to stay away from guys who may be great players, but have troubles with the law or history o personal issues that might effect the team. The league is far from perfect, but it’s getting better – thugs and criminals are dwindling in numbers – and they rarely have long careers (there are still plenty of jackasses though).
As for the celebration in the clip, this kind of thing is no longer acceptable in the NFL – the team was penalized, and he probably will receive a fine from the league. The next time he pulls a lame stunt like this, the fine goes higher. The NFL is increasingly focusing on sportsmanship, as well as issues of player safety, but it takes time to change the game. I think the NFL is on the right track, and although jackasses will always be a part of football, they will continue to be marginalized, and hopefully penalties for being an idiot will keep increasing until it really hurts.

Posted on November 27, 2011 at 10:11pmI agree! All sports for that matter today have become disgusting spectacles of disrespect to the sport and themselves. I love playing sports but refuse to provide these convicts in the offseason any of my money in support of their thug product. There are still a few class acts out there who could be role models to the troubled yoots in the world but unfortunately not enough to make a difference and so the youngsters emulate the antics of these dipsticks and the cycle perpetuates itself. The same is true of the jagoffs in hollywood and pop culture for that matter as they just copy each other’s liberalistic agendas for fear of being outspoken and taking a stand for what is good versus what is popular. Sorry, but I would rather watch a school football team, or a school play than support these fools…

These “minor” fines are ridiculous. They are not meant for the player, they are meant for the average Joe to look at and go “wow, 15 grand, that’s a lot”. Because too us it is a lot of money, but to a pro player making millions, it doesn’t bother them at all. If the NFL wanted to really make a statement to the player, fine him in games missed. That’s the only thing they really understand. Not only is it a bigger chunk of money, it humbles them…well just a little. Ride the pine big mouth and think about how normal people should act.

Don’t you just love when a player makes a good hit or catch, and the flexing or dancing that follows?
When that happens, I just tell my friend (in reference to the player showing off)….”oh, that’s right, you’re the first player who ever scored a touchdown…now shut up and go sit on the bench, you idiot.”
He just looks at me in a quizzical way. I can’t tell if he is amused, but I sure am!

Posted on November 27, 2011 at 8:35pmHey, BO……I’ll just comment on the first sentence.
It is, truely, an opportunity for Black males to be a role-model. After seeing all the arrests, along with the on-field antics/showboating, I’d say they are miserable failures.
Of course, this is not learned at the professional level. After our local HS team (blacks, again) had their yearly butt-whipping (48-0) by a nearly all White team, 5 or 6 seniors quit. So, Bo, I‘d say this is not just a ’professional’ phenomenom.
Enjoy the “show”, if you catch my drift.

Seems pretty clear the headline is intentionally misleading as it would have been more accurate to state that tiny detail of how he was shot. He wasn’t defending his house or in the military/law enforcement. He shot himself in the leg while illegally carrying a weapon in a bar. Do I really need to explain how those two things are far from the same?
Which of these is more clear?
“BILLS WR TD CELEBRATION MOCKS JET PLAYER GETTING SHOT IN THE LEG”
or the much less controversial but more accurate
“BILLS WR TD CELEBRATION MOCKS JET PLAYER WHO SHOT HIMSELF IN THE LEG”???
