Biracial Couple in Arizona Finds Burnt Cross on Front Lawn

A biracial Arizona couple awoke the morning of Christmas Eve to find a large wooden cross had been constructed on their lawn — and that someone had tried to set it on fire.

Iggy Griffin of Gilbert, Ariz. told Phoenix Fox affiliate KSAZ-TV he‘s afraid he and his wife are being targeted because they’re a biracial couple. A few feet away from the cross was a rock wrapped in what the station described as a “nasty” note.

“I’m sitting up here, just like it’s 2011, almost 2012. I got biracial kids, the whole nine yards,” Griffin told KSAZ.

He made the discovery around 5:30 a.m. Saturday. At first he only saw the cross, but when police arrived he saw that it had been partially burned.

“I got maybe about three feet from it and you could smell where it was burned and as it got lighter, we were able to see that they tried to ignite it,” he said.

Neighbors recalled seeing a bright light from the Griffins’ yard around 1 a.m. but thought it could be Christmas lights.

Police collected evidence and the case will be turned over to detectives who specialize in hate crimes.

According to KSAZ, the note left implied the incident may have been related to Iggy Griffin’s business. He’s an independent contractor who installs satellite dishes. But either way, he said it’s unacceptable.

“It ain’t something that you expect in this day and age, in addition to that on Christmas Eve morning,” he said. “Dealing with the police and seeing something like that..something that should have been gone…a way long time ago.”

      If you want to get rid of racism the government is the place to start. This is what CURRENT law says about “marriage license” people.  Black’s Law Dictionary defines “license” as, “The permission by competent authority to do an act which without such permission, would be illegal.”
      Marriage License: “A license or permission granted by public authority to persons who intend to intermarry”. (5th 1990 Ed page 877)
      Intermarriage: “See Miscegenation” . (5th Ed page 731)
      Miscegenation: “Mixture of races; marriage between persons of different races, as between a white person and a *****”

      @HAPPYRWE – wow, really? You honestly think that such a horrendous, vile act as burning the cross on this couple’s lawn is proof of OWS/anti-Christmas agenda? Where is the connection? You may also find it interesting/enlightening to know that while some OWSers were indeed protesting and annoying people in markets nationwide, there were also a huge number who were feeding the homeless of cities throughout the country. seems like honest volunteer work to me.
      and @waspanglosaxon – with respect to your anti-miscegenation laws reference, black people were also not considered to be people according to US law. Does that make it right? If something should be respected because it is law, how do you feel about Health Care Reform?

      The problem is even worse than that, I live in the Memphis area and have heard from black college students and professors that blacks are incapable of being racist since they are not the dominant group in charge right now, and that any examples of racism coming from minorities is simply dismissed as hyperbole or dismissed outright without any acknowledgement of the slurs.

The Lord does not care what color you are, all He cares about is our souls. I hope justice is handed out swiftly for this family’s sake. God bless them and I hope they have a blessed Christmas.
