Bishop Daniel R. Jenky (Image Credit: RRStar.com)
Troubles continue to mount for a Catholic Bishop who drew parallels between President Barack Obama, Adolf Hitler and Josef Stalin during a recent homily. Bishop Daniel R. Jenky in Peoria, Illinois, ignited a firestorm when he took to the pulpit earlier this month with some harsh words for the president.
The drama commenced on April 14, after Bishop Jenky called for his followers to embrace “heroic Catholicism, not casual Catholicism,” especially when it comes to addressing contemporary religious liberty issues in the United States. Catholic News Service has more about his controversial words:
After listing several governments throughout history that “have tried to force Christians to huddle and hide only within the confines of their churches,” Peoria Bishop Daniel R. Jenky said President Barack Obama “now seems intent on following a similar path.”
He warned that Catholic schools, hospitals and Newman Centers “could easily be shut down” rather than comply with the government’s mandate that most health plans cover the cost of contraception, sterilization and some drugs that can induce abortion.
So far, the reaction has been fierce, with more than 90 faculty members at the University of Notre Dame signing a letter calling for a renouncement of his comments or — a resignation from the university’s board of fellows. He had served at the educational facility, as Catholic News Service notes, for two decades before becoming bishop. The Chicago branch of the Anti-Defamation League, too, has called for an apology.

The diocese in Peoria, though, is claiming that Bishop Jenky’s words have been taken out of context. In an April 19 statement, Patricia Gibson, who serves as diocesan chancellor, wrote:
“Bishop Jenky expressed concern that our country is starting down a dangerous path that we have seen before in history. Bishop Jenky gave several examples of times in history in which religious groups were persecuted because of what they believed. We certainly have not reached the same level of persecution. However, history teaches us to be cautious once we start down the path of limiting religious liberty.”
Here are some of his words, in detail, that were delivered to some 500 men who were participating in the annual “A Call to Catholic Men of Faith” event earlier this month:
“As Christians, we must love our enemies and pray for those who persecute us, but as Christians we must also stand up for what we believe and always be ready to fight for the faith. The days in which we live now require heroic Catholicism, not casual Catholicism. We can no longer be Catholics by accident, but instead be Catholics by conviction.
Hitler and Stalin, at their better moments, would just barely tolerate some churches remaining open, but would not tolerate any competition with the state in education, social services, and health care. In clear violation of our First Amendment rights, Barack Obama — with his radical pro-abortion and extreme secularist agenda — now seems intent on following a similar path.”

Clearly, these comments are both politically-charged and, in the eyes of some, plainly offensive. The portion where the bishop claims that Obama is intent on following the paths of Hitler and Stalin is what seems to be most aggravating to those who are speaking out on the matter.
You can hear audio of these words (at 3:30), below:
In addition to the aforementioned reactions, Americans United for Separation of Church and State has filed an IRS complaint against the local diocese charging “illegal election intervention.” An April 19 release on the group’s web site reads:
The Internal Revenue Service should investigate the Catholic Diocese of Peoria for illegal electioneering after Bishop Daniel R. Jenky compared Barack Obama to Adolf Hitler and Joseph Stalin as part of an election-year appeal, says Americans United for Separation of Church and State.
Americans United today filed a formal complaint with the IRS over Jenky’s intervention in the presidential campaign. Federal law prohibits churches and other tax-exempt nonprofits from endorsing or opposing candidates, said AU, and the bishop’s April 14 sermon amounts to an order to vote against Obama.
It seems the controversy shows no signs of simmering, despite the diocese‘s attempts to clarify Bishop Jenky’s statements. What do you think? Did the bishop go too far or were his words within proper bounds? Take the poll, below:

Posted on April 24, 2012 at 9:35amWhat exactly is Heroic Catholicism? Catholicism is support for Rome and it’s Government contrary to the United States of America that is one Nation Under God to whom we Trust.
A letter written by Senator Ted Kennedy to the Pope. It was hand delivered by President Obama Summer of 2009 when he visited the Vatican. Kennedy had hoped to repair his relationship with the Catholic Church as he lay dying of cancer at 77 years of age. In spite of his pro-abortion record throughout his tenure, he wrote about his record of helping the poor and keeping his faith. He asked for prayer as he admitted he was an imperfect human preparing for “the next passage of life.” Without any gospel remedy or biblical hope in the return letter, the Pope’s reply came, dictated, of course, through his assistant. The Pope thanked Kennedy for the letter, expressed concern for his illness, and then closed the brief letter with these words, “Commending you and the members of your family to the loving intervention of the Blessed Virgin Mary.”
How tragic this is. It is one thing to not hear the gospel of Jesus Christ while alive; it is another to not hear it when about to die.

But, to tell you the truth, I believe that it the Ayatollah Obama’s intent to “tax the churches into oblivion.” Kind of like what he’s doing to our coal industry. Then, it won‘t be the Ayatollah’s fault, it will be those no-good churches that can’t pay the taxes.

Its not the great minds of the past at isue, it is the current crop of Bigots and Hypocrites that run the Church. The Ex-Nazi Pope, Cardinal Dolan and the rest of the Bishops are doing a fine job of driving away the laity. Parishes in Seatle are in revolt over the conservative positions taking by ArchBishop Sartain( http://seattletimes.nwsource.com/html/dannywestneat/2017984109_danny15.html), nor is the Popes war on women and nuns going to win back the American Catholics drifting away from the hardline stance the ex-Nazi has imposed.
Being catholic does not mean you surrender your ability to think for yourself. We are no longer serfs in the field, the only power the Catholic Church has, is the power we, the laity gives it. Sending an attack dog like Bill Donohue after a group for survivors of Priest abuse is not Christ like, nor is the Pope’s action against nuns serving the poor and sick. These old men are living examples of Gandhi’s comments regarding christians, “I like your Christ, I do not like your Christians. Your Christians are so unlike your Christ.”

Posted on April 24, 2012 at 7:13pmEncinom/Moncine: Despite what you espouse through your own brand of bigotry against the Church, the vast majority of Catholics are in communion with the Pope and the Bishops who teach the true doctrine of the faith – NOT the watered-down, non-subsidiarity oriented ‘social justice’ that is spewed by those orders of religious which have spent decades attempting to do the exact same thing within the walls of the Church that progressives are trying to do to our country. B16 is simply declaring that if these religious wish to remain Catholic, they need to start teaching/preaching the Church’s doctrine- not what they WISH was doctrine. If they don’t like it, they can leave! This is EXACTLY what happened to the Episcopal church over the last 30 years, and look how their numbers have declined – because the hierarchy was not listening to its faithful and CHANGING doctrine into pro-feminist, pro-practicing homosexual, all-inclusive and no consequences teachings. They ended up reaping what they sowed. The Church does not change; the people are the ones who walk away from her.

My coworker said “why? he’s where he is because of his sins“ and I said ”Isn’t that true for all of us?” Don’t get me wrong, Charles Manson is where he is because of the choices he’s made. Try to imagine living the life that Charles Manson has lived and then one day you die and meet God face to face and in the blink of an eye God shows you your entire life with perfect clarity. Imagine the pain of seeing our sins through Gods eyes, that is “Hell” and I don’t wish that upon anyone. I imagine this is why Jesus sweat blood in the garden at Gethsemane. Jesus didn’t sweat blood because of what He was about to endure, Jesus sweat blood because He could (with perfect clarity) all of the sins of the whole world until the end of time. imagine what that must have felt like, talk about having the weight of the world on your shoulders. When we stop being afraid of comparisons to Hitler and Stalin, and finally actually examine their content, THAT’S when we can learn from them. This bishop did NOT compare Obama to either Hitler OR Stalin. Instead he examined the path of statism that all three followed with vast differences of degree. For example, Hitler set up an entire shadow government composed of appointed “czar-like” officials whose purpose it was to confuse the line of authority so that Hitler wasn‘t tied down by his own country’s constitution and he could accomplish things with executive power before the other branches of government could check him. If we DON’T remember this path Hitler took, we won’t be able to stop Obama OR ANYONE ELSE IN POWER from making those abuses. ADL, get your head out of the sand, and stop stifling speech that advances your own cause!

Am sure this will not go unnoticed by our thin-skinned and arrogant dudes in the White House. Big brother has a vindictive streak. Ask Nugent.

Posted on April 24, 2012 at 9:04amGuess there are many of our Far Lefty American Catholics who have bought into that “social justice ” business which stresses man’s physical needs over those of his spirit . Know Jesus gave the people fish and bread at the sermon on the mound, but I don’t remember hearing that He “ redistributed ” them from others ! Think this will be a time of serious introspection and a time for serious courage for Catholics. We know that the Marxist atheists have no history of respecting religions. And Big Brother governments intimidate and punish those who don‘t tow Big Brother’s line. We’ve already seen that behavior by those union enforces of our so-called Democrats . Could get messy . Especially if the Obama crowd gets 4 more years…

Posted on April 24, 2012 at 9:26amYes, unfortunately, some Catholics and a lot of non-Catholics do not understand the Church’s doctrine of subsidiarity, wherein needs should be met at the LOWEST common denominator (i.e., immediate family first, then extended family, then parish, then community, then city, then state, then government) FIRST.

“The Catholic Church has a history of defining and defying dictators”
By which you mean they stood by while Mussolini and Hitler took their respective nations into far-right Fascism and perpetrated the Holocaust.

Posted on April 24, 2012 at 2:34pm@VANCE: More disinformation on your part. There is ample evidence that shows that Pope Pius XII, even before he became Pope, rallied people against the Nazi regime. The then-current Pope, Pius I, wrote an entire encyclical (public letter, to you) “Mit Brennender Sorge” (1937), to condemn them. Pius II carried on once he rose to the papacy and worked tirelessly behind the scene to save as many Jews as possible. The fact that clergy all over Europe were being arrested and killed due to helping the Jews escape made it very difficult for him to speak openly against the Nazis. So, please, do your research instead of using anti-Catholic rhetoric inspired by the likes of Jack Chick before opening your mouth.

Posted on April 24, 2012 at 2:40pmVANCEUPPERCUT… If you look at Fascism from traditional libertarianism (pre 1880′s; complete, or nearly complete, lack of government) in it’s proper philosophical ideology, then no, Fascism is on the left. Marxism, Socialism, Communism, Fascism, Totalitarianism and Dictatorial governments all want and need Big, overbearing government.
Report Post »And yet again you show ignorance. Pope Pius XII worked diligently to secret as many Jews (more than a 1000) as he could personally (providing food, clothing and medicine) through the Pontiff’s summer house property into Switzerland and other safe locations in the world.
